Engagement Party
This would be a small party this Saturday. Tomoyo got the first
invite. She and Sakura squealed when Sakura showed off her
ring.
“I'm so happy for you,” Tomoyo said. She gave her pregnant friend a
wild hug. Sakura chuckled.
She got to invite her dad, Touya, and Yukito. Shaolan invited his
mom and sisters. His mother was excited to be a grandmother.
“Come to think of it,” Shaolan said on Tuesday. “We never had a
housewarming party, did we?”
“I don't think so, no,” Sakura said. She turned around after adding
it up.
“Are you saying…?” Sakura asked. Shaolan shrugged his
shoulders.
“Do you want to?” he asked. Sakura walked over and sat down. She
rested her head on his shoulder.
“I would like that,” she said. He held her hand.
--------
Saturday came. Sakura and Shaolan had the apartment cleaned and set
up for the party. Sakura did the minor cleaning. He wouldn't let
her do too much.
“I've got it,” Shaolan told her.
“I can use a vacuum cleaner just fine,” she said.
“Just be careful,” he said. He kissed her on the forehead. Sakura
smiled and patted her stomach.
Around three o'clock, the guests started to arrive. First came
Yukito and Touya showed up.
“So good to see you!” Sakura said.
“How have you been?” Yukito asked.
“Good,” Shaolan said. “And you?”
“Good,” Touya said. He put his arm around his lover. Yukito
smiled.
“We have some good news,” he said.
“What is it?” Sakura asked. Touya lit up at that question.
“Do you want to tell them?” Yukito asked.
“No, you go ahead,” his boyfriend said. The men held hands.
“You know the Apartment 322?” Yukito asked. Shaolan raised his
eyebrow.
“Isn't that a few doors down from us?” he asked.
“Yes,” Touya said. Sakura covered her mouth.
“Wait… Did you…?” she asked.
“Not yet,” Touya said. “We just filled out the paperwork and put
down deposit.” Sakura turned to Shaolan overjoyed.
“We're going to be neighbors,” Yukito said.
“When will you move in?” Shaolan asked as he moved aside.
“By the end of the month,” Touya said.
“That soon?” Sakura asked. “Wow!”
Tomoyo and Meilin were next arrive. The latter brought a box of
cake with her.
“Hello!” Sakura said. Tomoyo squealed and hugged her. Shaolan
locked eyes with Meilin.
“Hello,” she said in a low voice.
“How are you doing?” Shaolan asked.
“Fine,” Meilin said. “I'm fine. Um… I brought you cake.” She held
up the white box in her hands.
“Thank you so much,” Sakura said.
“Yeah…” Meilin said, nodding. The four of them stood silent. Meilin
looked ready to run.
“Um… Do you want to come in?” Sakura asked.
“Uh… yeah, yeah,” Tomoyo said. “That's a great idea.” Everyone
hurried inside. Meilin couldn't look up at her cousin.
-------
“When is dad coming?” Sakura asked. Touya took a minute to
think.
“He should be getting off work now,” he said. “He'll be here soon.”
Sakura began to relax.
“I'll call mom and see where she and my sisters are,” Shaolan said.
He stood up and walked out of the living room with his phone.
Tomoyo put her arm around Sakura's shoulders. The mother-to-be
tried to relax. Maybe things won't be so awkward after their
families got there.
