Bright New World

Five months in and Sakura and Syaoran had gotten used to domestic life. Touya and Yukito moved into their new apartment. Only thing left to is secure stability and wait for the baby to come. Should be no problem, right?

Sakura found herself in a field of lights. Fireflies floated overhead. She reached up to touch one, but her hand slipped through. So tiny.

Suddenly, Sakura turned around. A small figure sat in the distance. They appeared to have their back to her. Curious, Sakura walked over for a look. She reached out as she got closer.

“Hello?” she asked. The figure didn't move. Sakura felt her stomach grow warm. She looked down and saw it glowing. She gasped and stumbled backwards. The light grew brighter. Her body became engulfed. Her screaming was swallowed by the void. Her body felt like it was burning. All the light drowned the void.

Syaoran paced around outside of their apartment. He looked up when the door opened. Sakura stepped outside.

“Ready?” he asked.

“Uh-huh,” he said. Syaoran held out his hand. His fiance took it and they started walking. Sakura had an appointment this morning. Time for the first sonogram.

“You nervous?” Syaoran asked.

“A little,” Sakura whispered. He held her hand.

“It's okay,” he whispered. “I'll be by your side.” Sakura kind of smiled.

They took the bus to the doctor's office. They barely spoke on the ride there. Sakura had her hand to her stomach. What was that dream last night? Unease washed over her. She just hoped…

“Are you alright?” Syaoran asked. Sakura looked up.

“Huh?” she asked. Her partner eyed her. Sakura pressed her lips together as she shook her head.

“Sakura,” he said.

“Don't,” she said. She paused for a moment.

“Not until after this appointment,” Sakura said.

“You sure?” he asked. She nodded. Her grip tightened on his hand.

“Okay,” Syaoran said. Sakura closed her eyes.

“Thank you,” she said. The woman took a breath. Just get through the morning. Just get through the morning.

The waiting room had about twenty people in it. Syaoran signed them in. The couple took their seats. Sakura didn't know how to explain her dream to Syaoran. She didn't understand it either. It had to be a sign of something coming for their child, right? She hoped not.

“Kinomoto,” the nurse said when she walked into the waiting room.

“That's us,” Sakura said.

“Here, let me help,” Syaoran said. He pulled her to her feet. The couple followed the nurse down the hall.

Sakura lay on the exam table. Syaoran sat by her, holding her hand. The doctor walked into the exam room.

“Good morning,” she greeted them. “Have you experience any pain or discomfort?”

“No,” Sakura said. The doctor took notes.

“Still having morning sickness?”

“No.”

“That's good. Anything else on your mind you want to talk about.”

Sakura shook her head. “No.” The doctor raised her eyebrow.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“Yes,” the mother-to-be said. The doctor finished up her notes.

“Okay. Let's begin,” she said. The doctor put the gel on her stomach. Sakura was surprised at how warm it was.

“Wow!” she said. The doctor chuckled.

“Yeah, I don't like using the gel cold on my patients,” she said. She picked up the wand and scanned Sakura's belly. Sakura and Syaoran looked at the monitor. An image of their baby appeared.

“There's your baby,” the doctor said in a low voice.

“Wow,” the couple said. The simple beauty on a screen could wash away worries of the outside world. Something told Sakura that her baby was going to be fine.

“It's beautiful,” she said.

“Yeah,” Syaoran said. He never let go of her hand.
