Chapter 1
His brown hair swayed in the wind. His amber eyes shone. At last the war was over. He was going back to his love- Meiling… Three years. Three long painful years, it had been, since he had felt her touch, held her close, tasted her sweet lips…
"Where are your thoughts drifting to, may I ask, my friend?"
Li Syaoran turned to face Hiirigizawa Eriol. He sighed. "You know me too well to raise such a question, Eriol."
Eriol chuckled. "Yes I do. And I'm sure you'll soon be meeting the fair maiden you are thinking of. But right now, is it not the time to celebrate our victory? Everyone is waiting back at the camp to honour the hero of the battle."
"No, friend, I prefer staying here- alone."
"Syaoran, why do I get the feeling that something is troubling you?"
His lips curved into a smile, "Just as I had said earlier- you know me too well."
Eriol placed his hand Syaoran's shoulder. "If there is something bothering you, then tell me. Perhaps I can offer a solution."
"Eriol, something inside me tells me that I am happier now than I would be when I reach home. Since the past few days, my heart feels empty and I get a bad feeling every time I think of home."
"It is probably just your imagination. You should not let your mind be troubled over such trifle matters. Come, let us join the celebrations. It'll free your mind of such tensions." Eriol said as he led Syaoran to the soldiers' camp.

The door opened to reveal a middle-aged man dressed in fine clothes. His long black hair was tied into a ponytail. His grey eyes travelled around the room, stopping at a beautiful maiden sitting on the large bed wearing nothing but a light pink, almost transparent robe.
"Ah, Lord Leopold. I was expecting you. Please make yourself comfortable." spoke the young lady.
The man stepped inside and closed the door. He advanced forward and kneeled beside the woman. "You are even more gorgeous than I had imagined you to be", he whispered and slowly started undressing her.

Syaoran alighted from his horse, to stand before a huge white manor- the home of the duchess, Li Yelan- his mother. He knocked at the door, which was soon opened by an aged man. His grey eyes, which perfectly matched the colour of his hair, widened at the sight of the tall, handsome youth standing before him.
"Good day, Wei. Nice to see you still with us."
"Oh, M-Master! You are still al-alive!" exclaimed the butler, "I don't believe my own eyes."
"Yes, I am still alive, Wei. And you can believe your eyes, as they are not deceiving you. But wouldn't you ask me to come in?" Syaoran said, a smile playing on his lips.
"Of course, of course. Please come in." Wei led him to a spacious, beautifully furnished hall.
"Who is it, Wei?" came a voice from inside.
"Mistress Xiefa, it's the young master, Xiao Lang!"
"What???" Xiefa came running in to the hall, followed by her three sisters.
"Xiao Lang!" she cried, before wrapping her arms around her brother's neck. "We thought we had lost you. They told us that you were killed in battle. We were so afraid. Mother cried for days together. First it was father, then you…" Unable to control herself any longer, she burst into tears.
Syaoran gently stroked her back. "Sshh, Xiefa, I am back. It is alright now." He looked at his other three sisters- Fuutie, Fan-Ren and Fei-Mei. "Where is mother?" he asked, not seeing her anywhere.
Silence.
Syaoran turned pale, expecting the worst. He gazed at his sisters, each trying to avoid his eyes and then turned to his butler, "Wei, WHERE IS SHE?"
Wei wiped a single tear from his wrinkled cheek. "I am sorry to say this, but Mistress Yelan passed away 5 months back." Syaoran stood as if he had been turned to stone, unable to move. His worst fears had come true.
"H-how?" he managed to utter, his voice hoarse.
"She was unable to take the news of your death. She always confined herself to her bedroom, never speaking to anyone. Then she fell terribly ill and…" Fan-Ren replied between sobs. "She was verily shocked after she heard that Meiling had-" she suddenly stopped.
"Meiling had what? What happened to Meiling?"
"Meiling was married to another, Xiao Lang. To Duke Ferdinand. She agreed, after lot of persuasion."
"NO! You are lying! Meiling would NEVER do that to me. NEVER!"
"She thought you were dead, Xiao Lang."
"No, I don't believe you! I am going away from here. I am going to see Meiling." Syaoran cried as he rushed out of the house and mounted his horse.
"Brother, wait, stop…" his sister cried.
But he was gone.

The beautiful maiden stared at the ceiling. Then she glanced at the man sleeping beside her. Her first `customer' for that evening. It wouldn't be long before another came, undressed her and made love to her.
She hated it.
To think of the wonderful dreams she used to have about a handsome prince riding on a horse, taking her along with him to a distant land where everything is perfect- and where they would live happily ever after…
She sighed and said to herself, `Wake up from your whimsical world, Sakura. Life is not a fairytale.'
