In this fic, Sakura and Tomoyo will still call each other using `-chan' but only as a term of endearment towards each other. From what I know, it's inappropriate for Japanese teenagers to still use `-chan' in calling each other's names, but “old habits die hard” and that's the case with Sakura and Tomoyo. (;-D

Until There Was You
Chapter One: "Destiny At Work"

Typical.

It was a way of life in Tomoeda. Friendly smiles always greet you wherever you look. Cheerful voices are audible in every corner.

It was painfully optimistic.

The sun shone brightly as Sakura pedaled her way to school. Her short auburn hair brushed against her shoulders, the wind animating each lock of hair into playful anemones.

“Ohayou, Kido-san!” she greeted a chubby old man wearing an apron.

“On your way to school, Kinomoto-san? Better hurry up or you'll be late! It's already quarter past seven!” He chuckled as a distraught Sakura gave a loud 'hoee!' and pedaled faster.

The classroom door slid open and revealed a panting Sakura clinging to the door.

“Am I late?”

“One minute and forty eight seconds before the bell rings, Sakura-chan!" a pale faced girl with raven hair answered. “You're just in time!”

Sakura smiled at her best friend. “Precise as always, Tomoyo-chan.”

“One minute and forty eight seconds? You have a new record, Sakura!” another girl piped in.

“Ohayou, Chiharu! Where's Yamazaki?” Sakura winked at her wavy haired friend.

Chiharu blushed. “Well, you know him... He's probably off somewhere convincing some poor gullible victim that oranges used to be square.”

Sakura laughed. “You're probably right. After all, you know each other so well.”

“We've been friends since childhood. What do you expect?”

Tomoyo shook her head. “Until now,” she corrected. “Now... he's your boyfriend!”

Chiharu blushed again. “H-hai..." She looked down in embarrassment.

Sakura flashed a playful smile at Tomoyo, suppressing her laughter. “Now, now, Tomoyo-chan. Don't tease Chiharu like that. It's childhood love, after all.”

Tomoyo sighed in an exaggerated manner. “Ah, young love!”

“Which reminds me!” Chiharu's eyes widened and turned to Sakura with a serious expression on her face. “YOU never dated at all. There are so many cute guys here who like you a lot! Remember Hikoichi?”

“And Tsubasa, Ikagami, Minoichi, Yagami..." Tomoyo added, counting her fingers for effect. “And the list goes on and on!” She turned to Sakura and grinned.

Sakura's cheeks turned into a light shade of pink. “W-Well... I don't really think about those kind of... things.”

Chiharu shook her head in disbelief. “But you never really gave them a chance. Sakura, you're eighteen years old already! It's about time your love life takes its course.”

“Oh, Sakura-chan! I'll be more than willing to set you up on a blind date! That would be such a CUuuute production!” Her eyes sparkled as she held her cheek. “I'll name it `Sakura's First Blind Date: The beginning of a blossoming new love!'”

Sakura sweat dropped. “You haven't changed a bit, Tomoyo-chan..."

“Seriously. I think you should start dating. You know -- check out the merchandise.”

“Somehow, that just doesn't sound right, Chiharu..."

“Sakura-chan, have no worries! I'll pick the perfect guy for you! And I won't take no for an answer. I'm off!!!”

“Tomoyo-chan!” Sakura groaned as she watched her best friend's retreating back. She had no choice. “Fine. I'll do it...”

Chiharu gave her a pat on the back. “That's our Sakura! You won't regret it!”

The bell rang. It was finally dismissal time and the hallway was already crowded. A skinny boy worked his way through the mass of anxious students to reach a certain emerald-eyed beauty.

“Kinomoto-san! Kinomoto-san!”

Sakura turned around to see a tall skinny boy with dark brown hair running towards her. Finally able to reach her, he wheezed and waited for his flabby body to unwind its unfit muscles.

“What is it, Yugata-kun?” She tilted her head as she studied the freckled young man cowering in front of her. Her companion Chiharu frowned at the sight of scrawny Minou Yugata.

“A-Ano… May I have a word with you in private?” He bowed his head, hiding his red face.

Sakura blinked. She glanced at her pig-tailed friend who was mouthing a frantic `no!' and hesitantly nodded. “Uh… okay…”

Deep black eyes examined the receding figure of a young woman, watching and waiting for the silhouette to disappear.

“Kinomoto-san…”

I don't feel the same way… I'm sorry, Yugata-kun… Her words rang through his mind, silently robbing him of the sanity he had left, mocking him as he felt an uncontrollable anger build up inside of him.

His face contorted into a menacing grin. “I won't give up, Kinomoto-san. You'll fall for me. You will see what I am capable of." He closed his eyes in rapture, anticipating what lies ahead.

You better be careful, Sakura. That guy's a loon. Stay away from him as much as possible.

Sakura frowned at the words of her concerned friend. “I wonder what Chiharu meant by that. I don't find him in the least bit suspicious…”

Suddenly, the phone rang.

She stared at it uncertainly for a while before picking up the handset. She held her breath and said, “Hello…?”

“Sakura-chan! I found someone! I'm certain you'll like him a lot!” came the enthusiastic voice of her best friend.

Sakura gave a sigh of relief. “Tomoyo-chan, you scared me!”

“Why? Is something wrong?”

“Iie. I'm fine. Just a little paranoid, I guess. So, who is he?”

Ecstatic giggles could be heard on the other line. “He's perfect! He's the star athlete of our school's soccer team, also the vice-captain. His height is 5'7” and he has dark brown hair. He has those dreamy heart-melting intense eyes. Plus, he's very nice and a gentleman at that! I heard he came from another country.”

Sakura smiled at her best friend's gusto. “He sounds great, Tomoyo-chan. But tell me, what's his name?”

“No can tell, my dearest friend. That's why it's called a `blind date'. You're not supposed to know!”

“Okay…”

“Never mind those little details! You will meet him at La Cherie, nine o' clock in the evening tomorrow.”

Sakura winced. “Why so late? Besides, tomorrow's too soon…”

“He has varsity practice so that's the only time he has available for this. Don't worry! I'll help you get ready! Let's meet at the mall in front of the fountain later at five, okay? Oops, hafta go! See you later, all right? Bye!”

Sakura sweat dropped. `Trapped yet again,' she thought. She just couldn't say no to her best friend.

Sakura waited patiently at their rendezvous point, dressed in a simple light green dress and a pair of pink thong sandals. She glanced at her side and saw a handsome young man conversing with a ruby-eyed girl that had her hair up in two buns. The young man was quite attractive, catching the interest of every girl that passed by. His height was approximately about 5'8”. His ruffled chestnut hair and intense amber eyes could make any girl's knee buckle. He had these broad shoulders, a pair of strong arms, and a well-toned physique.

Everything about him spelled an aura that was both alluring and mysterious.

His eyes met hers, catching her off-guard. She blushed and quickly looked away, embarrassed of being caught staring.

“Sakura-chan! You look so lovely in that dress!”

Sakura turned to where the voice came from and saw her best friend holding a video camera right at her.

“T-Tomoyo-chan!" She cleared her throat, her cheeks still slightly red. "H-Hi!"

Tomoyo pulled on her arm. “Come on, Sakura-chan! It's shopping time!!!”

“Hooeee..." uttered the auburn haired girl, sweat dropping as Tomoyo led her to the first shop on the right. Before she got dragged inside the store, Sakura took one last glimpse to where the handsome young man was, but he was already gone.
