Chapter 8
Another evening wasted on serving strangers, Touya sighed as he walked through the moonlit deserted street. His jobs usually weren't that bad or hard nor did he mind serving people he rarely and barely knew. This evening just went bad because he had to wait on an exceptionally rude group who thought they owned him.
If only he didn't need the money he would have gladly slammed a whole lemon meringue pie on one of the guys' face and walked out on them. Besides that, the restaurant manager pleaded for him to be patient. And he dare not disobey the manager because he might not hire him again.
This just wasn't turning out to be his day. It seemed as though he kept on running into smug do'ahos wherever he went. And of course among all of them only one stood out distinctly.
Sen Hanamichi.
The most asinine of them all. The self-proclaimed basketball tensai had not only ruined lunch for him and Yukino but he also dared to make her his personal slave through a bet that he knew he had an edge.
~Flashback~
"I dare you to a one-on-one shoot out. Best out of ten. The person who'll get the most points wins." Sen said with a not so straight face. "If you win, I'll leave you alone. But if I win, you would have to wait on me hand and foot for two weeks including weekends."
"All right. Why don't we go to the court now and get this over with," Yukino answered back with a shrug.
Sen led the way to the gym while Touya and Yukino stayed a few steps behind him. All the way, Touya kept on persuading Yukino to let him take over the bet because if she lost he wouldn't be able to stand the sight of Sen all over her. But she wouldn't give in. She asked him to trust her and told him that she knew what she was doing.
Touya had no other choice but to step back and just cheer her on. Plus there was something in her eyes and her voice that told him that everything would be all right.
Sen had managed to capture the attention of his teammates and most of their groupies. By the time they reached the gym there was a rather large crowd behind them.
Touya anxiously waited for the basketball captain to fetch a ball from the utility room. He nervously glanced at the girl beside him and relaxed when he saw that she was anything but nervous. The sound of a dribbling ball caught their attention and halted the lively chatter of the thickening crowd.
"Why don't I teach you some basics before we go on with this bet, Yukino-chan."
Touya's eyes turned into slits. He had seen this move before. It was a sleazy excuse for Sen to get his hands on Yukino. He would show her how to properly hold and throw the ball with him behind her and his arms around her. It was the oldest trick in the 'How to Gently Manhandle Unsuspecting Girls' book.
"Iie," she shook her head in response. "There's not much time before the bell rings. Why don't you just go before me? I'm sure I can learn a thing or two by watching your moves."
"Okay then but don't complain that I took advantage of you when you lose the bet."
"I won't."
Touya's face reddened in anger. He wanted to swipe that sick look on Sen's face. Despite of what he had said, the guy did take advantage of Yukino the moment he made that bet. Touya couldn't do anything but trust Yukino though since he couldn't risk being sent to the headmaster's office for assault and battery. There were too many witnesses.
Sen got seven out of ten baskets. He missed the last three because his head got bigger than the ball due to the cheers from his teammates and groupies. He gave a disgruntled shrug before giving Yukino a 'beat that' grin.
"You know, you could take a few steps forward just so your shots could reach the ring," Sen smugly said to Yukino as she took the ball from him and got into position.
"No need. I wouldn't want you to complain that I took advantage of you when you lose the bet," she replied with a sweet smile.
The look on Sen's face almost made Touya laugh. His face held surprise and a hint of a scowl because no girl had ever thrown his words back at him before. As a couple of minutes passed by, Touya could barely contain his amusement.
The 'basketball genius' was being creamed by a pretty girl. Sen's mouth dropped lower and lower as each of Yukino's shots swished cleanly through the net. The crowd was also silent because never before had they seen such perfect form and perfect shots, especially not from a girl.
Yukino sank in all ten shots even though all she needed were eight.
"Never underestimate a girl," she said to a dumbstruck Sen before walking out of the gym with the silent crowd parting for them.
~End of Flashback~
True to his word, Sen did not bother Yukino for the rest of the day. Nor did Touya thought that the 'basketball tensai' would bother her anytime soon. He got some major ego licking to do. He had finally met his match.
Iie. Yukino-chan is way out of Sen's league, Touya snorted inwardly.
Touya's thoughts reverted back to the girl. More than ever, her similarities to Yukito were overwhelming. There was a moment when he saw Yukito instead of Yukino when she aimed to shoot. Yukito rarely played basketball but Touya knew his form by heart. And Yukino's form looked suspiciously like Yukito's.
There it goes again.
Touya had been having this nagging feeling on and off all throughout today. It was a feeling that was vaguely familiar. It was what he felt whenever there was something wrong around him. No, not danger. Just something wrong.
It had been a long time since he had this nagging feeling. Not since he gave his power to Yue in order to keep him and Yukito alive.
But what does it mean?
A sudden clap of thunder jolted Touya from his thoughts. Looking up, he saw that dark clouds were fast covering the full moon. It was usual for the weather to abruptly change during this time of the year.
Touya's slow pace turned into a brisk walk. He didn't want to get caught in the rain. But as he neared the Penguin Park, he got that irksome feeling again. He halted to a full stop and stared at the woods behind the park. He stood there, mesmerized, for several minutes even though droplets of water were starting to fall.
Just as he was about to shrug it off and walk away, his eyes caught a glimpse of silvery blue aura behind the trees. Each step he took made him feel the aura more.
A gasp escaped his lips when he felt a full blast of the familiar aura.
Yue?
Before he could recover from the shock of feeling the moon guardian's aura, a bolt of lightning struck a tree not very far from him. He was knocked off his feet. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was the tree falling down on him.
~*~
He woke up to find a rhythmic pain jabbing on his ribs. He groaned his protest, wanting the pain to go away. Slowly, his memory returned. He recalled the lightning blinding him. Recalled the image of a burning tree fast falling towards him.
The pain became more insistent. For a moment he welcomed the feeling. If he was feeling pain it could only mean that he was still alive. After saying a silent prayer to Kami-sama for not taking his life away, he instantly became annoyed with the pain again.
He opened his eyes and saw the familiar white pattern of his bedroom ceiling. It took only a few seconds for his eyes to get accustomed to the dim lit room. He looked to his left side without moving his head and saw his imouto-chan's auburn hair. She was sprawled on the floor with her head resting on top of her arms on his bed. He smiled softly at her sleeping form, touched at her obvious worry of his condition.
He then proceeded to look at his other side where the pain was originating. He was expecting to find that side bulging with thick bandages. But that wasn't the case. A vein popped on his forehead that started to throb angrily when he saw Keroberos poking him on the ribs.
"WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING, STUFFED ANIMAL!!!"
"Hoe?" Sakura jolted awake and saw Touya sitting up with her sun guardian in his hand. He was trying to squeeze Kero's nonexistent neck.
"Oniichan!!!" She plucked Keroberos from her brother. "That's not nice."
"Not nice?! That pest was poking me on the ribs!"
"Hey, I was just checking if you were still alive," Kero sputtered.
"Of course he's still alive. I would have called for an ambulance if he was in a bad condition." Sakura scolded Kero before turning back to Touya. "Daijoubu?"
"Aa," Touya sighed as he lay back down. "No thanks to that stuffed animal."
"Ha! And who do you think carried you up to this room? You were so heavy I thought my back would break."
"Maa, maa. No use fighting. The important thing is that Touya-niichan is okay."
"How did I get here anyway? Last thing I remember I was at the Penguin Park."
"Actually, we were hoping you'd tell us. I found you at our doorstep, soaked and unconscious." Sakura frowned.
Yue!
Touya suddenly remembered feeling the moon guardian in the woods.
Was it real or was I just imagining it?
