YUKITO'S LITTLE SECRET

Chapter 9

Loud noises coming from somewhere outside of the bedroom woke Yukino from her sleep. At first she ignored it, wanting to stay in dreamland where she was having a romantic moment with Touya. It wasn't until she heard a loud crash that she sat up on her bed in attention.

She strained her ears and found that the noises came from the kitchen. Slowly, so as not to make any sound, she slipped out of bed and grabbed the baseball bat near the door and tiptoed out of the room. Halfway across the hallway, she remembered that she got magic powers and didn't really need a chunk of wood so she gently placed it down, all the while sweatdropping at her silliness. She glanced at a nearby wall clock and saw that it was a few minutes past four in the morning.

A burglar! Who else would break in my apartment at such an ungodly hour? Then again, no burglar would make such loud noises. And besides, why would he be in the kitchen?

Her heart slammed hard against her ribs from nervousness and slight fear. Whoever was in the kitchen was making dreadful, almost inhuman, sounds that could wake the dead. She reached the corner that would lead to the kitchen. Leaning against the wall, she breathed deeply several times to calm her nerves.

It was then that she sensed his aura.

"KEROBEROS!"

Sitting on the kitchen table, surrounded by plates of food left over from her dinner was the Seal Beast in his false form. Taken by surprise, the yellow stuffed animal accidentally swallowed a large piece of chicken drumstick complete with the bone. He punched his chest to dislodge the food from where it was stuck and drank almost half the carton of orange juice she just bought last night.

"Don't scare me like that!"

"Don't scare you like that?" Yukino yelled back indignantly. "You're the one who sneaked in my apartment and made those unnerving sounds!"

"Stop shouting. You'll wake the neighbors."

Of all the…! She stared at Kero with wide, unbelieving eyes as he went on eating enthusiastically. She would have thrown him out of the house had she not known the real reason why he was here. Besides, her stomach was suddenly growling in reaction to all of the laid out food. So she joined Kero in attacking the entire content of her fridge and cupboards. Her stock usually lasted for two days but with the help of the sun guardian all that remained was a can of sardines. Kero plopped on the table with his bloated belly reaching up to the sky.

"How is he?" She asked after a while as she sipped some tea. She couldn't help but frown when she remembered how lucky it was that she was nearby when that lightning struck. If she hadn't then Touya would have been crushed and fried.

~Flashback~

Every night since school started, since she got that letter from Touya, Yukino (or rather Yue) had spent a few hours hiding in the woods near the King Penguin Park. She found the relatively quiet moonlit area very relaxing. And however silly it might sound, she was finding her one-sided conversation with the owl that was nested on the same tree she occupied more and more comforting.

And like the previous nights, she sat on her branch, her angel wings hanging gracefully from her back and her hair swaying slightly to the gentle wind. Her owl friend was out hunting an unsuspecting rodent and probably wouldn't be back for at least half an hour.

The moon guardian sighed more out of melancholy than boredom. Things were doing great in school and she spent most of her time with Touya. Lately, she never failed to forget her problem whenever she was with him but as soon as she got home, reality would set in.

She was living a fake life. No, not because Yukito was the false form of Yue. The past year since Sakura transformed all the Clow Cards to Sakura Cards, the identities of both Yukito and Yue began to merge so they were one and the same. She was living a fake life because Yukino is now the false form to both Yue and Yukito.

The guilt of lying to her mistress and most especially to Touya always drove her to these woods. Partly because she wanted to run away from reality and another part because she needed the solitude this place had to offer so that she could find a solution to her problem. It was a bit ironic and a lot confusing.

The more she thought about it, the more she was convinced that Syaoran was right. The only way to end this farce was to confront Touya with the truth. But her resolve always disappeared the moment she saw the way he looked at her. At Yukino. How could she deny herself of the attention that he was giving her? Sometimes she would bask in his attention but it would always end with her crashing back to reality.

Touya was flirting with Yukino. And Yukino did not really exist. She was just the product of Yukito's insecurities and fear of rejection. If Eriol does not find a way to revert her back to her old self, would she be able to live forever as a false person?

And then she would realize that she was not really as fake as it seemed. She was still Yukito. The only things that changed were her appearance and her name. She was still the same moon guardian that looked over the Card Mistress. And she was still the same person who was in love with the Card Mistress' brother, technically that is.

But will Touya realize that if and when I confess? More importantly will he be able to forgive me once he realizes that I had been lying to him all this time?

Yukino sighed for the umpteenth time that evening. She was in a hopeless situation. A lose-lose scenario as far as she could see.

She reached inside the fold of her robes and took a creased paper. It was Touya's letter for Yukito. She had read it almost a hundred times and was able to memorize its content that same night she received it. But she brought it with her nevertheless. Seeing his handwriting never failed to remind her who she really was and shouldn't get carried away with this charade.

Yukito,

What the heck is going on? What is that sorry excuse for a reincarnate up to this time? And why did you agree on cleaning up his mess? Can't Akizuki-san do whatever it is that Hiiragizawa wants you to do?

I don't like this one bit. I'm worried about you. I know you're a powerful guardian and can take care of yourself but can you blame me? One year! Since the first day we've met the longest time we'd been separated was a day or two (save this summer vacation). What am I going to do for a whole year without you?

*Sigh* I wish you would tell me what's going on. Better yet I wish you're back here in Tomoeda with me again.

~Touya

Be careful with what you wish for, she couldn't help but grimace. One of his wishes had already come true but he didn't know that. As for the other one, well, the other wish was something she had to make sure didn't come true. Not when there was a chance Eriol could find a way to turn her back into a boy.

But there was something else in Touya's letter that was bothering her. It was his choice of words and the way he used them. There was something that could be read in between the lines.

Was it longing? Was the longing to have Yukito by his side that strong? Did he miss him so much?

Baka, Yukino muttered to herself for the nth time. Don't give any meaning to something where none is meant. It's just wishful thinking.

She stood up on the branch and spread her wings as she let out a great amount of irritated aura. It was a full moon and she could feel its power circulating throughout her body almost filling her to the brim. She felt different, probably because the power of the moon was overwhelming the spiritual power Touya gave her.

Speaking of Touya, she suddenly felt his aura nearing the park. She jumped off the branch and glided in between the trees, not mindful of the rain that was starting to fall. She landed on another branch which was a good vantage point to the park though was hidden from view to anyone in the park. There she saw him standing in the rain and gazing at the woods.

Gazing at her.

She fidgeted on the branch even though she knew she couldn't be seen. But from the way he was staring suspiciously at her tree, she couldn't help but worry.

Before she could delve on it, a sudden lightning came out of nowhere and hit the tree she was standing on. She managed to fly away in time though was a bit shaken up by a low voltage of electricity. The sound of trunk breaking caught her attention.

Touya!

She flapped her wings vigorously to gain height and saw him lying unconscious on the ground directly underneath the falling, burning tree. She made a nosedive to gain speed, slowing down to scoop Touya's heavy form from the ground, and then flapped her wings to avoid getting hit by the tree. She got them away on time.

Staring down at the burning tree, she couldn't help but sigh in relief. A groan escaped Touya, notifying her that he was alive. She hitched his body higher against her side then began flying to her mistress' home.

By the time they reached the Kinomoto's doorstep her neck and back were aching from carrying Touya' dead weight and from keeping her very long, very drenched hair from obscuring her view. She let out a sigh of relief when she stood after depositing him against the wall. She stretched her wings as far as she could and shook them in time with her head to get rid of excess water. After that she bent down to check on him again.

He looked so peaceful sitting there with his head bent. She reached out to brush his bangs from his forehead, making some clumps of wet strands stick out. She caught a single drop of water that slid from his hairline to his forehead then his nose with a thumb. Her hand automatically went to the side of his face and caressed it.

The temptation to do more was overwhelming. Slowly her face drew nearer to his, her lips close to brushing his cheek and would have brushed against his cheek if not for a sudden interruption.

"HOE!"

The shout came from somewhere inside the house. Yue jumped with a start and stood up. She transformed back into her Yukino form as discreetly as she could, fearing that Sakura-sama might sense her moon aura. And after one last look, she pressed the doorbell once then ran back in the rain.

~End of Flashback~

"That wasn't a wise thing to do, you know," Kero replied after polishing off the last piece of apple pie he had managed to hide from her.

"What do you mean?"

She had an idea what the other guardian had meant although she chose to feign innocence. She was so close in being found out by her mistress.

"You don't go prancing around with your aura out in full blast. Sakura sensed you. Fortunately I was able to convince her that she just misses you and that she's reacting to the full moon even though the rain clouds were hiding it."

"I know, I know. But I had no other choice. I can't very well carry Touya in this form," she replied from the sink where she was washing their tall pile of dishes.

"Which reminds me why I'm here."

The tinkling sounds of plates stopped as she paused to look questioningly at Kero. "You mean you're not just here to empty my fridge and scold me about the mistress sensing me last night?"

"That's the point. It wasn't just Sakura who sensed you. Her half wit brother did too."

The plate she was holding splashed loudly in the sink filled with soapy water. "W-what do you mean?"

"He talked in his sleep and from what I gathered from his mumblings he felt Yue in the woods."

"But how could that be? He lost his ability to sense auras when he gave me his power months ago." Half of her told her it was impossible while the other half recalled how he stared at the exact position where she was hiding.

"There's no doubt about it, Yukito…er, Yukino. He sensed you. And even after he woke up I saw from his confused expression that he was somewhat sure of what he felt." Kero floated cross-legged and cross-armed.

"But…but…"

"I have a theory," he interrupted her stuttering. "Close your eyes and probe your aura."

Yukino shot him a confused look but did what he said. She concentrated in isolating her moon guardian aura and familiarized herself with it. What she found out made her gasp.

"It can't be! How could this be?" She paced around the kitchen.

"Hmm, just as I thought. I take it Touya's powers are diminishing inside you?"

"But how can that be?!!" She grabbed Kero in mid-air and shook him frantically, his head lolling vigorously back and forth.

"Y-yamero! Do you want me to answer your question or not?" Kero heaved several breaths after that. "Women! The only reason I could think of is that Sakura's power is growing stronger. Strong enough to sustain you. And since that's the case, you no longer need Touya's power so he's slowly gaining it back."

"How slow are we talking about? Eriol-sama hasn't even finished browsing five books yet. What if Touya finds out my secret before Eriol-sama finds a reversing spell?"

"All I can say is that everything depends on Sakura. Her magic is growing stronger by the day. And it's bound to multiply once her training starts."

"Training? What training?"

"The one that gaki's gonna give her. It is upon the orders of the Li clan elders that Syaoran train Sakura in martial arts and basic elemental magic."

"He can't do that!"

"Hey! Where are you going?" Kero watched Yukino stride towards the door as he flew behind her.

"Out."

"In your pajamas?"
