Chapter 10
"Quit it!" came the muffled shout from Syaoran's pillow. But whoever was making that banging ruckus wouldn't 'quit it', making him throw the pillow from his head and march to the door with extremely drowsy bug eyes.
"What the heck is it, Wei?" But there wasn't anyone behind the door. Syaoran looked to the left of the hallway then to the right then scratched his head in bewilderment before slamming his bedroom door shut. "Freakin' weird dreams. Just when I was about to kiss..."
He couldn't quite finish his muttered sentence for when he turned back to his bed he was greeted by icy silver eyes floating outside the dark night.
"AAAAAAAAAAAA!!! He summoned his sword and grabbed an ofuda from a nearby desk in panic. "Lightning, come to my..."
"Oi! Oi!" Yue flew backwards, away from the window. At that moment, the moon broke out from the dark clouds, illuminating the guardian for Syaoran. The boy recalled his sword and quickly opened the window.
"Do you have a death wish or something?! You came this close to getting fried!"
"Baka. I could have been a stranded cat on a tree, for all you know."
"What tree?" came the indignant reply. "Besides, cats don't knock on windows at such an ungodly hour. No, let me rephrase that...CATS DON'T KNOCK!"
"Oh so now you realized that the knock was at the window and not the door."
"How was I to know? Normal people don't visit through the window. Heck, what am I saying? You're not normal. You're not even a person, for crying out loud."
"Is that supposed to wound me? Sticks and stones...Why are you in such a bad mood anyway?"
"Oh let me see," Syaoran grabbed his chin in a thoughtful manner, "it's probably because SOME INCONSIDERATE GUARDIAN WOKE ME UP FROM MY SLEEP!"
"I get it! You must have been dreaming about Sakura-sama."
His chibi face started to turn beet red and steam started to come out of his ears. He couldn't deny it for it would be a lie and he wouldn't acknowledge it for fear that Keroberos was hiding somewhere underneath Yue's massive hair and wings. "What do you want?"
Her smirk was instantly wiped off her face as though her reason for disturbing his sleep was very unpleasant and she would rather not remember it at all. His initial irritation at the moon guardian disappeared and he moved away from the window to let her in. She gingerly squeezed herself in, careful not to strain her large angel wings. Once she was safely inside, her wings folded behind her and magically disappeared.
"We need to talk."
"I gathered as much," Syaoran sat on his bed while rubbing the rest of the drowsiness from his eyes. He indicated for her to take the chair by the window but she refused, preferring to stand by the window and stare at the clear moon. Now that she was aware of it, she could feel the power of that heavenly body mix with her mistress' intense star aura.
"Why didn't you inform me that you're here to train Sakura-sama?" The silence was broken by almost equally silent words.
"Because it's not my place to tell you so. As your mistress, Sakura is the one who's supposed to tell you. She said something about writing a letter to Yukito so you might be able to receive the news next week."
Yue let out a sound that resembled a grunt.
"What is it, Yue?"
"You can't train Sakura-sama."
"Eh?"
"Touya's power is starting to return to him because the mistress is growing stronger by the day. Strong enough to sustain my existence. If you train her, the faster she will become stronger and the faster it is for his power to return. You can't let that happen. He'll know who I am before Eriol-sama could find a reversal spell."
Syaoran watched her passionately troubled speech. The moon guardian herself was affected by the change in her false form. It wasn't just physical. She used to be unemotional to the point of being cold. But now she was different. Too troubled. Too emotional. Too confused.
"I believe I can't honor your request."
"But why not?" She tore her gaze from her element to glare, as well plead, with her eyes.
"I don't want to say that your problem is not important. But the truth is it isn't. You have no right to ask me of such not just because I don't answer to you. You have no right to tell me not to train Sakura because you are her guardian."
He paused for a while to see if Yue was able to understand what he was trying to say. "There is no danger right now but sooner or later evil forces would show up to challenge Sakura for the title of 'most powerful' or to steal the cards, maybe even both. As a descendant of Clow Reed it is my duty to prepare the Card Mistress for such events."
"Just as it is my duty to do the same."
"Aa. Sakura is our priority...her training our immediate duty. Nobody and nothing else matters."
It all sounded so cold and unfeeling but it was the truth. Yue understood now. Her problem was such a meager one compared to the tasks and risks that were laid out for her mistress. For a moment there she forgot her responsibilities. She became too involved with herself and too selfish.
Syaoran was correct...she had no right.
"What am I to do," she whispered as she turned back to look outside. The moon was starting to disappear and from the east the dark sky was starting to brighten in preparation for the morning sun.
"There's only one thing to do and you should have done it right from the start."
"I can't tell him."
"The right path is always the hardest path. He won't hate you just because you loved him enough to change."
"No, he'll hate me because I lied to him."
"Which is why you should tell him soon. Lying never had a good effect on friendship. If that baka Sakura has for a brother doesn't accept you as a lover, he'll still love you as a friend."
"It's funny how a boy who's a little over a decade would give advise to a magical being who's centuries old," she let out a humorless laugh.
"Wisdom doesn't always come with age. What are you going to do now?"
"Go home. Think of a way how to tell Touya before it is too late." Yue climbed out of the window and sat on the sill. She looked back in the room to nod her goodbye. "Arigatou, Li-kun."
He watched as she jumped off the window. A second later she was off at a distance, flying towards the rising sun.
Ah, peace at last, he thought gleefully as he dropped on his bed and hugged his pillow. Now I can go back to my dream.
"GOOOOD MORNING, TOMOEDA! Rise and shine! It's a beautiful weekday morning. Time to wake up and get ready for school and work. And to irritate you out of your beds, here's Aaron Carter with..."
Syaoran jumped off the bed and started whacking the clock radio again and again with his pillow. "AN HOUR OF UNDISTURBED SLEEP! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? I STUDY HARD AND DO MY CLAN DUTIES...WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM ME?! I PUT UP WITH A CRAZY GIRL WITH A CAMERA THAT'S LICENSED TO KILL, AND A STUFFED ANIMAL THAT IRRITATES THE HELL OUT OF ME, AND A PSYCHOTIC OVERPROTECTIVE BROTHER, AND ANOTHER PSYCHOTIC GUARDIAN WHO'S SUFFERING FROM THE CRAZIEST IDENTITY CRISIS I'VE EVER SEEN! AREN'T THOSE ENOUGH OF A TORTURE ALREADY?!"
~Scene Change~
"Yukino-chan!"
Yukino halted walking in the hallway and turned to wait for the girl rushing towards her. "Mariko-chan," she greeted the huffing girl.
"I'm glad I caught up with you. Ne, Yukino-chan, I wanted to invite you to my party."
"Party?" she opened and read the invitation that was handed to her. Sweet Sixteen? Nani?
"It's a tradition in the US to celebrate a girl's sixteenth birthday in a big way so I decided to throw a huge party."
Trust Mariko-chan to bring in something new, she thought with a small smile. The other girl was pure Japanese in blood but technically she was not. Her parents migrated to the States even before she was born so legally she was an American. It was quite funny actually. Mariko was a Japanese exchange student in Japan.
"Ne, Yukino-chan, you'll come right? Thanks! And dress casually although I'd prefer it if you'll wear a dress. Ja!"
Yukino stared at the blur of dust that symbolized the other girl as she stopped from one person to another giving away invites. She hadn't actually said that she'd go but then she wasn't given a chance to say no either. She wasn't in a mood to be socially active even though the party was still two and a half weeks away.
After her talk with Kero and Li, she decided to stay away from Touya as much as possible. This would lessen the risk of him sensing her moon aura while at the same time give her some space to think how she would tell the truth without him seeing how guilty and afraid she felt. She was so bent on staying clear off Touya that she didn't notice that he'd been avoiding her too.
As she was about to round the corner to descend the stairs, Touya appeared on the other side of the corner with a stack of rolled up poster he was bringing up to the Faculty Room. She tried to step aside to avoid colliding with him but tripped on his extended leg. She teetered at the edge of the stairs, raising her arm to protect her head from the inevitable fall.
A noise echoed across the empty stairwell, each bounce emphasizing the loud thump of her heart. When she felt she was still in one piece, she opened her eyes and saw the last few posters rolling to a stop against the wall.
What the-?!
She was speechless with shock and relief. She heard a sigh only to realize that it did not come from her. She tried to move but couldn't because her arms and body were enclosed in someone's protective circle.
"Touya-kun."
"Daijoubu?"
"Aa."
But neither of them moved. She could feel his heart beating against her head. They were standing close against each other with him behind her and a step up. She couldn't see his face and her heart started to accelerate again because of their closeness. It was uncomfortable not just because he was holding her so close to him but also because she was afraid that he would sense who she really was.
To her immense relief and dismay, he released his hold on her and inched away. He proceeded to retrieve the things that he had dropped in order to prevent Yukino from falling. He didn't notice! If he did then he would be squeezing the truth out of her. She bent over to get some of the posters that were in her vicinity then placed them among the others in his arms.
"Arigatou gozaimasu, Touya-kun."
"It's nothing. I'm just glad you're not hurt," he gave her a weird smile that almost gave her goose bumps. "Anou, Yukino-chan, can you wait for a while? I'm just gonna get rid of these then maybe we could talk."
"Talk?" Perhaps she let out that sigh of relief too soon.
"Aa. Can you wait for me up front? I'll just be a few minutes." Without waiting for a reply, he left Yukino staring at his receding figure. So she waited for him, all the while pacing back and forth.
Was I wrong?
What does he want to talk about?
Has he finally found out my secret?
Has he seen through my deception?
The moment Touya stepped out of the building, Yukino was already contemplating going back to England and hide behind Eriol's 'Throne of Evil'. Of course she couldn't / wouldn't / shouldn't do that. First of all because her place was here in Tomoeda with the Card Mistress. Secondly, she didn't think she could take hearing Nakuru, Spinel and Kero (through the phone of course) tease her on what a big coward she was.
They started to walk side by side. She noticed that he kept on taking, in his opinion, inconspicuous looks at her. After several minutes of silence, Yukino found her nerves being stretched to the limit.
He must know something. That was why he was so serious (well, more than usual that is). And that was why he kept on throwing odd looks at her.
Not being able to stand the silence much longer, she stopped walking and waited for Touya to do the same. He looked back at her with wary eyes. It seemed as though time itself stopped and the only sound she could hear was the hard beating of her heart.
"Touya-kun, is...is something bothering you?"
The silence went on. Neither of them moved nor breathed visibly. The only movement that could be seen was their hair and clothes dancing to the silent tune of the wind.
"Aa."
The sudden reply was unexpected that she couldn't help but fidget in nervousness. She looked down giving the impression that she found her shoes very interesting. The time has finally come. He knew and now he wouldn't want to be her friend anymore.
"Touya-kun, I..."
"Will you go out with me, Yukino-chan?"
To be continued…
