He's waiting to die. Life stopped for him when he lost Julia; the time we've spent together is simply his purgatory, torment he must endure before moving on. Even if he finds her, his soul is already dead, and I don't think he'll be able to start living again.

I'm not sure he even wants to find her, no matter how fiercely he pursues her. He takes too many deliberate risks, and sometimes I get the feeling that he considers his uncanny luck more of a curse than a blessing.

I thank that luck every time he comes back alive.
