Chapter 4: The dream of an awakener.
Days passed and Spike healed. He was now able to walk and practice some martial arts, but every now and then he felt his body resisting to his actions, still begging for time to heal.
Spike found that when he left the apartment to go for a walk that Anila's apartment was actually in an abandoned warehouse. "Strange," he thought. "Why would she be living in a random warehouse. Is she hiding from someone..."
Time passed uneventfully and quiet. The Red Dragons had collapsed when Spike "died", so no longer did he have to go into hiding. Him and Anila wandered around the city picking up groceries or going into little stores. At night, Spike would escape to the top of the old building. He stood there for hours afraid of going back to sleep, back to the haunting nightmares. Sometimes he would sit there and think while watching the falling meteors and locating constellations he was taught when he was little. Other times he would practice his Karate, working himself to exhaustion so that he could fall into a dreamless slumber.
Anila still remained a mystery to Spike. She didn't talk much about herself, and was often gone during the nights. True, she was kind and Spike and her had good times, but something just wasn't right. He wished she would expose more of herself to him. (author's notes: Not that way you perverts!!! =, = ;)
The daytime was great for Spike, for he kept himself busy to not think. However, during the nights nightmares of Julia and his past plagued him each night, soaking his sheets with cold sweat. However tonight was different...
Spike opened his eyes to nothing, just silence and pure darkness. " No, NO I don't want another dream. Not another nightmare. No MORE!!", Spike thought. But a voice rang out, a child's voice. The voice was humming a tune slightly off key, but still the melody soothed him.
The darkness fell away and Spike found himself in room, obviously a child's room. The doors that lead to the balcony were open letting a sea breeze glide through the room. The voice continued humming, as Spike took in the room that was littered with toys and other objects. The humming stops and suddenly words form a song, a sad song with a haunting melody...
Hm, I want to linger
Hm, a little longer
Hm, a little longer here with you...
Spike turns towards the voice to find a little girl, about 7 years old, sitting at a vanity table, staring into a mirror. Her purple hair gleams as she brushes it, her eyes so happy. The girl seemed so familiar... "It's Faye...It's her, but why why is it that woman?" Spike said shocked.
Suddenly his vision spinned and he found himself again in the room, but this time Faye was older and sitting at a desk, scribbling words on to a piece of paper. Her eyes were serious and she was biting her lip. " Oh, why can't I get this one math problem. I can't stand math," the young Faye said throwing down her pencil. Spike stood there staring at the younger Faye, unable to move. She seemed so young, so different from the Faye he knew. Picking up the pencil, Faye looked at the problem again for several minutes before her eyes lighted up. " So that's what I did wrong," she said while giggling. "I'm such a lunkhead."
Again the vision changed to the same room, but different somehow. A radio played a smooth tune as a teenage Faye rummaged through a closet. "Darn, why can't I find my sneakers. They're not hard to miss, I mean they're yellow." A voice called from the floor below, something like "Faye, we're gonna be late for Chris' soccer game." The teenage Faye screamed "Just a second!" and with a few more minutes of rummaging through the small and cluttered closet, the shoes were located. Quickly pulling them on, Faye took one last glance at the mirror before dashing out the door.
The room changed again, this time clean and somehow lonely. An adult Faye stood by the window looking over a the sparkling sea. She was dressed in a suit with her hair absent of a headband. Next to her were two suitcases and a jacket. "So I'm an adult now. It seems like I'm not though." Faye turned and started talking to the room "Don't worry it's only a short time, and before you know it MY little girl will be in this very room." And with that Faye left the room never to return, to her house again. Never to see her little girl play in her room...
Spike didn't understand. Why was he seeing this of all things. Shouldn't he be seeing Julia die twelve times, or watch Vicious brutally kill her. Why was he watching Faye's life, and most of all, why did it matter to him.
Rain began to pour down, but Spike didn't care. His hair and clothes soaked, yet he didn't care. A figure appeared before him, a woman with purple hair and a thin, almost anorexic body. She looked so frail, wrapped only in a blanket as she curled into a ball. Her skin was so pale almost translucent and she looked so fragile. But worst of all were her eyes. The eyes that once held so much passion and hatred were now blank, empty holes in a skull. She seemed so fragile, so...dead.
Her dry cracked lips opened to only form the song he had heard not long before...
Hm, I want to linger.
Hm, A little longer.
Hm, A little longer here with you.
Hm, It's such a perfect night.
Hm, It doesn't seem quite right.
Hm, this is so long but not good-bye..
The body turned to dust and was blown away by the wind. All that remained were those hopeless, empty, green eyes...and that song
___________________________________________________________________ _____
Spike shot up in bed, sweat secreting out of every pour in his body. "WHAT WAS THAT!?". His mind was pounding, and his throat dry.
The dream was so odd. Why would he dream of Faye's life as a child, and then watch her almost fade away. The question that seemed to upset Spike the most was that he seemed to care.
The room seemed to be closing in on him and Spike couldn't seem to breath the humid air in. Slowly climbing out of bed, Spike put on his training pants over his boxers, and grabbed his Zippo and cigarettes. Leaving the cramped room, Spike walked into the living room and quietly climbed out the window onto the fire escape. Quietly as he could he pulled the ladder down. "Why the hell am I trying to be quite, Anila probably isn't home anyways."
It was dark with only a single street light illuminating the street below. But Spike didn't need any light, he was so familiar with the feel of the cool bars on his callused hands and feet.
Spike reached the top and was about to climb over, when he heard the scrape of feet against the ground.
Peaking over, Spike saw the unexpected. A female figure stood under the glistening stars, dressed in black. If it weren't for the light of the full moon, Spike wouldn't be able to see her. Spike recognized the form she stood in, it was standing position. Her body relaxed, her fists were two thumbs apart and in front, and her feet planted firmly on the ground. Her mind no longer recognized where she was, it only noticed the her muscles relaxed, her body preparing to coil up and spring into attack mode. The women's figure waited for the music to turn on, for the tempo to begin.
The music plays, and her body goes into a low block exactly six inches above her knee. Her other hand is pulled back below her ribs, ready for the next movement. Her hips twist and coiled, with one leg bent and the other leg strait behind her. Her leg in the back takes a C-step, going towards the other foot and then spreading out ones again to do the previous position but reversed. Her fist flies forward to hit her enemy in the chest. She holds that positions her hips coiling ready for the next attack. Her hands chamber and she looks over her right, then spins to the right and her hand goes down in another block.
Spike looks with interest as this women does the almost perfect formation in Karate. Her dance of the blocks and punches keep going, as the beat remains the same. She doesn't notice as Spike is focused only on her. Know she only keeps going, driving her block and punches with such force and precision and yet her muscles are relaxed. "She's amazing," Spike thought with utter amazement.
With the last mind blowing punch, the dance ends and the girl returns to standing position. Her head turns and blue and green eyes meet Spike's intense brown gaze.
"Spike, just to let you know I like to practice without people studying my every movement."
Every now and then I think about you
And it makes me, It breaks me
Out of you and into me
I make it
So take a look and watch it chew to my head
When you're leaving I'm breathing
Out of you and into me I feel sick
Now that you're leaving
Complicates our lives
But I am the reason
That I will stay alive
We are the energy
We are the same as you
Seek everything you need...
Every now and then
I dream about you
I lost the feeling
it's dead skin...
