Rei sat on a bench and watched the simulation with interest. There had been so much on Earth before it was destroyed.

"Didn't they know what they were doing?" she asked as Pheonix handed her a glass.

"I'm sure there was a few that did but the majority refused to listen. I've seen that large groups of humans are deaf to things other than their own concerns," he said.

"But why?"

"I don't know. I tend not to waste my time on figuring humans out. It's pointless."

"I suppose by our standards, it's pointless..."

"Even humans can't figure themselves out. So if they don't understand themselves, why should I even bother?"

"I understand. I just feel sorry, though. Look at how it was then and look at it now."

"Yeah. Come on, there's only one room left."

"I don't want to leave this place."

"We'll have to. It'll be closing soon."

"All right," Rei said and stood up. Let's go."

Vicious made his way into his ship and glanced at his bird. He was not surprised in the lease that his pet had sought refuge in his ship after the explosion on his office roof.

"We're going to Earth," he said and the bird ruffled its feathers. "She's worried enough about me. Besides, I don't completely trust my physicians."

He switched on the engine of his ship and stared out the viewshield. He was alone, like he had been in the old days but why did it feel wrong? Did he feel for her the way she felt about him? There were a lot of others that could see the change but perhaps their vision was blurred. Maybe it was his own vision that was blurred.

"What's your problem now?" Pheonix asked as Rei blinked her eyes.

"He's coming here," she said.

"He must not be that badly injured if he's coming here."

"I don't think that's accurate....See, even though he's coming here, he's putting a tremendous strain on his body. I wish he wouldn't. I don't know what happened at his office but it's still hurting him."

"You really mean something to him, then."

"He's never said that I do. He hasn't even thought it."

"Well he's certainly not coming for me."

She smiled slightly at his remark and Pheonix glanced up.

"Let's go. This place is shutting down for the night."

"All right. Do you think he regrets saving me? I know I bother him at times. Especially when he remembers his past."

"So he's got regrets. We all do. But you gotta deal with that. What's the point in bein' miserable over things you shoulda said or done? You thirsty or something? I don't want to be in trouble for not keeping you at your best."

"I guess I'm a little thirsty," Rei confessed and Pheonix nodded his head.

"All right then. It's been awhile since I've been to Earth so I don't know if the place I went to is still in business. But there's no harm in looking for it. We might get lucky."

They walked towards the entrance, Rei's ears twitching at the sound of the simulations being switched off.

"They even have a gift shop?" she asked and Pheonix glanced at a little store that was shutting down for the night.

"Probably owned by some insensitive human. From what I've seen in my travels, gift shops are places that sell nothing more than overpriced junk to tourists."

"Another way for a cheapskate to make a nice profit," Rei mused and Pheonix nodded his head.

"You'll find a lot of that on planets inhabited by lesser beings," he said as he glanced at a beat-up street sign.

"At least they haven't changed the street signs since I was here last."

"When were you here?"

"A couple of years ago. I had a job to do for someone here. I wonder if he's still alive...."

"What?"

"Probably not. He DID piss quite a few people off."

"You're in a risky business, aren't you?"

"Always have been. That's what the Regals taught me. It's a risky universe out there."

"Where are we going?"

"I think we're almost there. If it still exists, I mean."

"Why wouldn't it?"

"It wasn't exactly a legitimate place."

Rei said nothing as she moved in closer to Pheonix. The environment around her became more threatening and Pheonix glanced at her.

"Don't worry. Nothing will hurt you."

"I just don't like this area," she said and he shrugged his shoulders.

"You've got nothing to worry about. The worse they could do is attempt to kill you," he said.

"Boy that makes me feel good."

"Just trying to help."

"I was being sarcastic."

"I know."
