Chapter 23: Fold

Four months.

Four long months the five of them have been living on the planet Zi, an alternate Earth compared to the Earth's have each come from. Unlike their own Earth's, Zi was a planet full of barren land caused by hot temperatures and battles that are waged between countries. Similiar to a few demensions that they have travelled, these battles are waged in giant war machines. But they were not mecha, mobile suits or gears.

They were called Zoids.

And Zoids the group was indeed fighting against in the early morning, taking out a patrol of Republic units that assumed they were enemy spies of stragglers from the Gairos invasion of New Helic City, the capital of the Republic. It was hard to do anything now a days ever since the capital almost felt due to a surprise attack. Yet, their group was charged with being conspiritors against the Republic just because they happened to be near a capital!

Mercenaries get no respect.

"Ugh!" cried several of the Zoid pilots of the Republic patrol. They are all tied up, four in total and had the looks as if they were smacked around and beat with a pipe. "You won't get away with this, Gairos scum."

Buddy held Ranma back.

"Forget it, bro. Just let it go. These morons don't know any better." Ranma visibly relaxed and he let him go. "Listen you retards. How many times do we have to tell you. We are not Gairos! We're mercenaries that work out of the Nest. How many times do I have to show you our license to prove this shit!"

"Umm.. this is the first time we've met, actually.."

Ranma held Buddy back from beating the guy with the pipe.

"Forget it, bro." Ranma said sarcastically. "Just let it go." Buddy relaxed and he released him.

"DIE!!"

Ranma AND Montel held him back this time, dragging him off to be FAR away from the republic patrol-men. They soon disappeared from sight.

"Hey..." the patrol leader called to them. "Hey!"

They were alone and surrounded by open, dry flat-lands.

The sound of a rattle caught their attention followed by a 'hissing' sound.

"Awww... fuck me!!"

-----

"Think they'll last out there?" Buddy asked his companions.

Montel shook his head. "I saw a rattlesnake slithering up. So I doubt it."

Ranma grunted.

"Twenty-eight hours until fold." Buddy stated, looking up into the hot morning sun and smiling. "I can't wait to leave."

"Yeah, this place sucks!" grumbled the pigtailed man. "There aren't any serious fighters around here. Everyone always depends on a zoid this or a zoid that. What the hell happened to good ol' martial arts fights?"

Buddy shrugged. "Probably died out once technology completely took over and wars broke out. It's common in all histories of man." He shook his head. "Though it'll be hard to find technology that would replace your's and Id's skill and power."

The three of them walk in silence for around an hour before arriving at the large oasis that served as their temporary base and shelter. Unlike most oasis, this one was actually the remains of a forest which was burned down years ago. Only this ten acre land remain unscathe, continuing to grow because of it's uncontaminated soil.

"Republic again?" Elhyam asked without looking up. The auburn-haired former-officer was studying a map of the land. She seemed to be mostly paying attention to areas that were marked informing the reader that various types of vegetation and/or forestry grew there. She was checking out the tropical regions.

Montel nodded.

"Assholes," she curse uncharacteristically. Hanging with shit-mouths like Bud, Montel and Ranma was being a bad influence on her. "Wish they would just leave us alone until we leave." All three grunted in reply. "I sent Emmy in the '19 to scout out a few regions on the southern hemisphere. She should be returning shortly.

Shortly indeed. The loud rumble of a fighters engines became slower until it was directly over them. The YF-19 slowly landed into Gerwalk mode, planting it's legs firmly in the soft forest dirt before winding down to a safe reactor cool-off. Emerelda hopped down from the forward canopy and handed Elly some papers.

"No luck," she stated calmly. "The area was indeed tropical, but there were no signs that would indicate a military base or weapons facility. The island was deserted, though."

Elly shook her head, rubbing her temples. "Damn it." She crumpled up the map and tossed it away into the bushes. "I've been trying to find a good launch site to get us into space. But with their modern tech and our lack of high altitude launch sites, we won't get into space by tomorrow morning!" she shouted in frustration.

Bud placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't sweat it. If we can't do anything, then we'll fold in atmosphere. It's more dangerous, but it's been done already."

-----

The YF-19 was slowly coasting along the barren ground along it's intended path. The cockpits were open and the wind was whipping by in a gentle breeze, tickling the skin of the pilot and co-pilot. The two of them were going on a routine patrol, scouting around incase Republic or other mercenary units tried to attack their temporary home. It actually rare to encounter enemies while out in the YF-19. The enemy seemed to have been scared of the variable fighter and tried to avoid any combat with it.

They were that intimidated by Alpha-One.

"Emmy?"

"Hmm?" The teenaged nano-girl lifted up her hemlet's visor and looked at the back of Bud's helmet-less head. Both of them were not in control of the fighter, allowing it to move on auto-pilot while in gerwalk mode.

"What do you think about folding?"

Emerelda looked at him strangely. "You have asked me this question before."

Bud nodded, keeping his eyes closed and enjoying the breeze. "I know that. But, I want to know what you think of it, now."

She paused to ponder on that question. Before, she was indifferent about the Fold concept. It was only another means of travel from point 'A' to point 'B'. If used in general practice, it would revolutionize the military and commerical sectors of a goverment by nearly ten fold. Folding was basically faster than light travel. Unheard of in all but the world the very fighter she sat in came from.

But now, she felt different about Folding. "I.. feel that it is both a Godsend and a curse."

"Oh?" Bud opened his eyes, raising an eyebrow at hearing that. "Why is that?"

"Godsend, meaning that if it did not exist, I would have never of met you, Montel or Ranma and Id. Without the Fold system, I would have been possibly a tool of destruction for Solaris and Gebler." Buddy nodded at that. That was indeed fact. "Yet, it is also a curse for when it is miss-used. Look at what has happened to all of us so far. Though it is only my first, our stay on this planet has not been very welcomed. Even Elly-mama, Mother Sofia's reincarnation, is frustrated with this.. Planet Zi."

Bud nodded to that. "I know how you feel. But I don't regret anything that has ever happened because of the fold system. If that sucker didn't go off on it's own in my own world, I would of possibly been dead broke, out of a job, out of a truck and fired from my goverment contract. Then I would have never of met all of you guys. Especially Ranma..." Buddy chuckled at some perverted thoughts.

"You are thinking of them," Buddy's eyes widened, turning to look back at his co-pilot. "The girl's in the picture, aren't you?"

"...." He shook his head and chuckled to himself. As each day passed, he loved Emerelda more and more. For some reason, he felt like he was a big brother to the girl behind him and not the uncle or Godfather the others thought of him as. "You've been snooping throught my shit again, haven't you?"

She giggled, but didn't respond. That's all he needed to know.

-----

"Cheapskates..." Elly muttered under her breath as she left the convience store. Setting the supplies she just bought in a locker, she hopped up into the truck's cab and drove off.

Out of bordom from hiding out in the forest oasis, she headed into the nearest town in one of the flat-bed trucks they owned. But unfortunately for her, there really wasn't anything to do besides purchase more supplies in preperation for their demensional fold. Water, dehydrated food and first aid supplies. The basics.

Switching her thoughts to another subject, she wondered how she would fare in the next world they come to. Upon completing her first fold and coming to this world, she learned something very important.

She was the weakest out of all of them.

And it's a fact, she thought to herself. Back in her world, she somewhat prided herself upon the fact that she was an excellent elemental and that she could use all four elements as attacks or defenses. But that ended after arriving in this plane of existence. After the fold, she suddenly felt empty, powerless, as if something she held precious was ripped away from her.

'Ether doesn't exist on this planet,' Id calmly told her at that time. She couldn't believe that! 'You'll just have to adapt to survive.'

I can't even make a tiny spark of light, she thought. But she adapted to the situation with the help of Ranma. She started to learn his style of martial arts and discovered that she was a natural at manipulating her ki, or inner spirit. Id explained to her that it was possible because of her useless Ether powers. She had the knowledge to use ki, but her center of focus was never on herself, but the element.

Elly adapted in many ways also, and one way she adapted was becoming more observive. She suddenly slammed onto the breaks, forcing the truck to come to a skidding stop in front of a group of bandits. Or mercenaries?

She narrowed her eyes. They were mercenaries, according to the patch on their right shoulders.

"What do you want, Roughnecks?" Elly asked coldly, identifying the merc group.

"Well, well well..." A scruffy-looking mercenary stepped up, idly tapping the shotgun he held against his shoulder. "If it isn't the first lady of the 08th MS Team."

08th MS Team. A name they all didn't agree to but didn't care to have. Only Montel was estatic about the name since it was his unit's designation from the world he retrieved Deathscythe from. They have been going under that mercenary unit designated ever since they registered at the Raven's Nest.

It's rare to see one of youse alone. Especially you, pretty lady."

Elly rolled her eyes. "What do you want?" she repeated, more firmly this time. Her hand went unnoticed when she reached for her side-arm.

The man's face went from ammused to really pissed off. "What do we want?! You bitch! You and your gay fag boys ruined our chance at becoming rich! You stole out mission then got more than half our unit killed!"

"Oh, that." Elly shrugged her shoulders. "That's what you get for trying to screw us over in the first place."

Elly threw a canister out the window and turned away. A loud bang and a bright flash behind her caused her to wince in pain. Throwing the passenger side door open, she jumped out and rolled, pistol held in her hands at the ready. She started moving back towards the end of the truck, facing towards the front knowing that the flash-bang's effects would be wearing off soon.

And she was right. A shotgun blast warped the corner of the flatbed just as she turned to the rear. Dropping to the floor, she aimed under the truck, under the double rear-axles and fired a single .357 magnum round. It darted through the air and literally cut off one of the merc's ankles making the rough-looking man fall down in agony. A second shot found it's mark between his eyes, blowing his brains out the back of his head.

Rolling to her left, she placed herself in the open and fired her six remaining shots from the prone position. Two men were running towards her, both recieving a pair of shots to the chest while one took a shot in the neck and the other in the crotch. Elly ignored them, rolling forward onto her feet and swapping magazines, pocketing the empty. She trampled over their dying corpses and readied herself. She could hear foot steps.

BAM!!

The merc that rounded the front driver-side corner of the truck got his brains blew out by a single point-black range shot. She pulled the trigger twice more, pumping his chest with a pair of magnum rounds just to make sure he was dead.

She let out a sigh. She turned and climbed up the cab, then moved up to the flatbed. Stepping over a section of tarped material, she dashed and leaped, tucking her knees and rolling in mid-air. She quickly pulled the trigger of her desert eagle, each shot piercing through the air towards the last merc. He cried as three shots hit him, two in the stomach and one in the chest, while the other two missed by meer inches.

Elly landed on her two feet, hopping a couple times before righting herself. She started to approach the panicing man whom was trying to crawl away. Walking forward calmly, Elhyam again swapped magazines before holstering her weapon. She bent down and picked up the shotgun, a 20 guage variant by the looks of the thinner barrel. She pumped the handle-once and pulled the trigger, blowing off the merc leader's head at point-blank. She then tossed the weapon away.

Joining with Bud, Ranma and Montel has really changed herself and her out-look on life. Before she would think twice about shooting and killing someone, when she wasn't involved in a mission with Gebler. Outside of the military-life, she was a calm and caring individual that did not promote violence or violence that led to death. Nor did she have prejeduce against others. But that all changed these past few months.

Within a span of a month, she learned to have a severe disliking of this planet and most of the general populace. It could of been just her, but most people she encountered pissed her off. Especially many of the chauvenistic men and even some amazon-like women from the Raven's Nest, the mercenary town and neutral city along the border of the Empire and Republic.

What changed her the most were the many lessons she learned about life and survival. On a few occassions the crew captured an enemy for interrogation. And everytime she gave mercy on the man or woman, they would turn around and throw it right back in their face. Many times she almost lost her life in doing so. But those were lessons learn and kept close.

No mercy.

Just like she showed the mercenary group that stopped her. Elhyam Van Houten shows no mercy to anyone.

"It's time."

It was late night, early morning. The twenty-eight hour time-limit passed just minutes ago. The sky was dark, yet in the distance over the far horizon, the sun was beginning it's rise into the sky. Dawn was near.

And the fold system was charged.

Buddy finished connecting and locking down the external fold device to the central dorsal section of the YF-19. A process that only he or Emerelda could accomplish being that they were the only two with an knowledge of how to fix or full operate the variable fighter - Emerelda knowing from his own instructions.

"Don't we have to be in the air to do this?" Montel asked.

Buddy shook his head. "Only I do." He looked at Emerelda. "You're riding with Ranma on this one."

"Why?!" pouted the nano-girl. "I wanna ride with you because I'm your co-pilot!"

"True, but ride with your father this time. I think he's getting jealous because you spend more time with me instead of him." he winked at Ranma.

She turned to Ranma. "Ranma-papa is jealous?"

Said person winked back at his friend before nodding to his daughter. "Yeah, sorta. I feel so neglected!" he faked.

"Awww!" Emerelda jumped on the pigtailed man, hugging him around the neck. "I'm sorry Papa! I promise to spend more time with you from now on!"

Elly, Bud and Montel shared a laugh before mounting their vehicles. Ranma and Emerelda followed suit, both of them climbing aboard Weltall. While the two Gears and the Gundam powered up, Buddy took off in the YF-19 and began to hover above the group while still in gerwalk mode.

Bud sighed. "I hope we get in this time," he said, typing away at his console without looking. He watched the faces of each of his teammates as he began the sequences which would commence the demensional fold. "It'd be nice to get to my real home and see my real family. But they'll never replace you guys."

"Same here," stated Montel.

"Yeah," Buddy closed his eyes and somehow envisioned everything. He couldn't help but chuckled, images of Elly, Emerelda and Ranma living with him. And the shocked faces of his family. Then came the funny faces his friends would make seeing the REAL Ranma Saotome before their very eyes. "I can't wait. I could just taste it."

"Let's go!"

"Yeah!" they chorused.

The fold sequence began. Bud monitored the readings and nodded to himself. They were all green. A real-time displace inside his helmet showed the fold bubble surrounding the fighter and his teammates mecha. He felt the shift of folding.

Hold on... felt?!

"What the---?!" he shouted out, scanning over his calculations.

"What the hell is going on?!" Elly shouted in worry.

A vid-window with Ranma's face popped up. "What's happening?"

"I don't know!! The fold device is going critical! It's gonna over-load!!" he looked at his console and gasped. "I fucked up on the calculations. I should of been paying more attention. Damn it! It's red-lining! We don't have much time now!"

"What the fuck does that mean?!" came Montel's voice.

Buddy stared ahead at the rising run as it came over the horizon. He looked down from his fighter at the the three humanoid-like mecha that contained his best friends and family. The memories of first meeting them and the memories that they all shared through hardship. With those memories drilled into his mind permanently, he made his decision.

"Good-bye."

Before they could do anything, the YF-19 quickly shifted into fighter mode and blasted away at full-speed. But as Buddy looked back one final time, his eyes realized that he was too late.

"NOOOOOO!!!"

The fold sequence commenced. It did not over-load as he suspected, but it did the one thing he did know. As the demensions shifted he watched in horror, one by one his friends and family were destroyed, crushed by some unknown phenomenon created during the fold. He screamed, yet no one heard him. He was tortured by the sights of those that he loved being killed before his eyes. Then salt was added further open the wounds when their crushed mecha exploded and seemingly were sucked away into some unknown vaccuum.

And when the fold operation ended, he fainted. His emotions fried at seeing the deaths of his surrogate family.

And after he lost consciousness, he didn't notice the empty vastness of vaccuum around the fighter. Nor did he realize that instead of a planet, he was somewhere deep in outer space.

Though unconscious, the YF-19's advanced computer system understood it's pilot and activated it's distress beacon.

Author's Notes:

Short, I know. But this was just filler chapter to do some cleaning up on the story. As I said in the last chapter, I would be killing off characters to handle the story much better. And so I have done so.

Why did I kill off Montel, Ranma/Id and Elly and Emerelda? Well, the story is mostly about Bud travelling through the demensions of several anime and games. Sorry for those of you that thought that Ranma was the main character, but he's not. This is a self-insert after all.

This chapter is the prologue to the solo-adventures of Bud and the epilogue to the adventures of Bud, Montel and Ranma. From this point, I am not sure if I actually wish to continue the story. I do have the story plotted out, but I don't really have as much fan support as I do for the Naruto story. Coming online and seeing so little people taking interest in this story makes me thing that it's not really worth my time. Sure, I enjoy writing it, but when no one else besides a few people enjoy it, I start to think it's a waste of time.

So for those of you that enjoy this story, please leave a review and give comments on it to support it. I know there are many that read this, but from my stand-point it seems like there are only so little.

If I decide to continue, next will be Chapter 24: Blue Heaven
