Imagine Evangelion. Now subtract all the mistakes and quality issues and replace it with a consistent story fabric, believably tormented characters, a world ending plot, and great art. That anime exists and it is called Rah Xephon. It was made over 20 years ago, and was a big deal when it came out, often described as "Evangelion done right". And this is a good descriptor. It really is fantastic, beautiful, and well done. You still have to see Evangelion, but once you do, see Rah Xephon. And you'll even cry in sympathy for the characters, because its a pretty dark story, with a hero that is destined to battle and kill all his friends. All to save the world. Its a god thing, only the religion in question is the Mayan system, and their calendar of rebirth, that is responsible. Watta-twist!
