There are depressing tragic anime, but all of them pale in comparison to one: Saikano. Saikano is the story of a guy who meets a cute little schoolgirl from his high school that has been fused with technology which makes her an unbeatable superweapon. And she with both lonely and pursued by every military on earth trying to destroy her because Japan's war crimes are finally catching up to them, and the world is invading and blowing up cities for what they've done. In this story, Japan is the ultimate villain. The girl, Chise, makes an appearance with her husband in one of my fanfiction stories, Valley of Love, because the two of them end up the last living people in the world by the end of their story. It is super dark. I would not recommend watching this anime. It will make you weep. It has caused suicides, more than Evangelion did. It is around as dark a series as Grave of the Fireflies is dark as an animated movie. Yes, I'm comparing the two.
