Chapter Six- End of the Facts
Ryan sighed as he toyed with the pen in his hand as he sat in the waiting area with Frank. This was definitely not how he wanted to start his day. Giving Tripp a note, that told the detective he was going to go get a drink, he went to the water fountain, and returned to find a very unhappy looking Horatio and an expressionless Stetler standing next to Tripp. He looked at Horatio questioningly. `Jay's not in law enforcement, so what's Stetler doing here?' He thought.
“Ryan we found a dead officer in your basement,” Horatio said, toying with his glasses. “Can you explain that?”
“Horatio, from my understanding that's not the only body retrieved from Wolfe home. I think I'll take it from here, due to the fact that an officer was involved in this,” Stetler said, as Ryan was hurriedly writing something down. He ripped the page out of the notepad and handed it to Horatio.
`Horatio, what are you talking about? What officer?'
Before Horatio could say anything, there was a cough at the door. Ryan and the others looked over to see a young man in a black suit holding a brief case standing in the doorway.
“Lieutenant, Sergeant,” he acknowledged. “My name's Darren Clark, Mr. Wolfe's attorney.”
Stetler raised an eyebrow. “I see, I was just about to question your client, please, follow me,” Stetler said.
Tripp stood, watching Ryan rapidly using sign language to communicate with Clark. “Since when could Wolfe afford a lawyer like Darren Clark?”
“From what I remember, Darren Clark was the family representative of the Horsebacker's, a wealthy family from California,” Horatio said, walking off in the direction of the labs.
“Well, Ryan you certainly have some history with Mr. Horsebacker and Officer Gerald Whitney,” Stetler said opening a folder. Ryan made no motion to comment, which Stetler took as a sign to continue. “Between November 18th 2000 and May 2nd 2003, Officer Whitney responded to 4 of 7 disturbance calls made by your neighbors, correct?” Ryan nodded, not making any eye contact with IAB Sergeant. “You medical records show you went to the hospital more times to not be deemed suspicious.”
Ryan signed something to Clark, who translated for Stetler. “My client says it was a rough year and that he had been training to get into patrol.”
Stetler raised an eyebrow. “Broken finger, sprained wrist, and a cut on your waist that required 14 stitches? And that's just the beginning of you list of injuries.”
“Just what are you getting at, Sergeant?” Clark said calmly, watching Stetler intently.
“That Mr. Horsebacker wasn't a great guy to get, ah, involved with,” Stetler said smoothly. He looked Ryan in the eye. “When you got into patrol, it was very clear that you and Officer Whitney didn't get along.”
Ryan shrugged, his hands moving rapidly. “My client and Officer Whitney had different views on many things,” Clark said.
“Including domestic violence?” Stetler questioned.
“Valera, how are we on those samples Calleigh gave you?” Eric asked as soon as he entered the DNA lab.
“The mucus sample is from a male, but didn't match Ryan or your victim,” she said handing him the results.
“Okay, this might help Wolfe out a little,” Eric muttered, turning to leave. “Thanks Valera.” He headed to the fingerprint lab where he met up with Calleigh and Joseph Kayle.
“Hey Eric, I was just asking Joseph about our fingerprints,” Calleigh said.
“I've gotten through most of them and so far they've all matched either Ryan or your victim,” Joseph said as the computer beeped at him. “Hello, what do we have here?” He peered at the computer screen, before turning it so Calleigh and Eric could see.
“Maria Horsebacker, works at DenCorp. as a secretary for CEO Jay Horsebacker,” Eric read, as Calleigh took notes. “So, maybe that's Jay's wife?”
“Probably, let's go talk to her,” Calleigh said. “Thanks Joseph!”
“Maria Horsebacker?” Eric said when they reached Jay's floor.
A petite brunette turned from the window she was looking through, her eyes red and puffy from crying. “Yes?”
“Eric Delko and Calleigh Duquesne, CSI Crime Lab,” Calleigh said. “We're here to ask you a few questions about your husband.”
She nodded. “Okay, but could we go somewhere private? This building has a grape vine the length of the empire state building.”
“Sure, lead the way,” Calleigh said.
Maria lead them into an unoccupied meeting room. “Do you know what happened to him?” She asked as they sat down at the large table.
Calleigh glanced at Eric, who answered, “From what we could tell, his throat was sliced and he bled out. He died in his sleep.”
Maria grabbed several tissues from her pocket. “Jay always said he wasn't going to die without a fight.”
“Um, Mrs. Horsebacker, did you and your husband have any problems in your marriage?” Calleigh asked.
“Well, we did have little arguments over things, but what married couple didn't? Why?”
Calleigh glanced at Eric again. “We found him in a, uh, compromising position.”
“You meaning he was sleeping with someone?”
“Well--” Eric started, but was cut off.
“Who was it?” She demanded.
“We can't--”
“Was it Ryan?” She asked. When she was greeted with silence, she relaxed. “Oh, okay.”
Calleigh's eyebrows rose. “Okay? You mean you knew?”
Maria gave her a watery smile. “It's complicated.”
Calleigh returned her smile, leaning back in the chair she as sitting in. “We have all day.”
Horatio walked through the morgue doors, to where Alexx was writing something down. “Alexx.”
“Hey, Horatio,” Alexx said turning to face him. “I was just finishing up on Jay Horsebacker.”
“COD was exsanguination?” Horatio asked.
“No, he died before his attacker sliced and stabbed him,” Alexx said. “I looked for needle marks or any other kind of abrasions, but didn't find any so I sent his blood up to tox.”
“Dr. Woods.” Horatio and Alexx turned to see Valera with a sheet of paper in hand.
Alexx smiled. “Hey Maxine.”
“Here are those results you wanted. Lieutenant,” she nodded at Horatio before leaving.
Horatio watched her go before his turned her attention to Alexx, who was frowning. “Alexx?”
She looked up at him. “Horatio, we have to get Ryan to a hospital now.”
“Why, what's it say?” He questioned.
“Jay Horsebacker died from Syphilis, an STD that has the potential of being undetectable if it's not found in it's early stages,” she said hurriedly.
Ryan glared at him. Grabbing his notepad and pen he scribbled something down before showing it to Stetler.
I'M NOT BEING ABUSED.
“Alright, you have ten seconds to make your point before we leave because you are wasting our time,” Clark said.
“Well, according to these files, Mr. Horsebacker had one count of domestic violence that your client filed, although he paid for his bail. This raises the question of why you're still with him. Did he threaten you in any way?”
Ryan swiftly signed to Clark for a lengthy moment before the lawyer responded. “According to my client, Officer Whitney was one of the officers who was with him when he was training to get into patrol. Apparently Whitney threaten my client to tell his instructor about his outside activities if he didn't report Mr. Horsebacker.”
“So when you saw him this past week, you figured it would be a great time to kill him?” Stetler asked.
Ryan glowered at him, signing to Clark. “My client says he hasn't seen Officer Whitney since he left patrol three years ago.”
Before Stetler could comment, the door to the interrogation room opened to reveal Horatio. “Ryan let's go.”
Stetler stood. “Horatio, I'm in the middle of--”
“Rick this is a medical emergency,” Horatio said firmly. “If you want details talk to Alexx. Ryan, now.”
“So let me get this straight; You and Jay are siblings and Jay bought wedding rings for the both of you so you could pretend to be married because you were assaulted and it gave Jay an excuse that he was straight, but really isn't?” Calleigh said skeptically.
Maria nodded. “It was the perfect idea. The guys that work here stopped hitting on me because, well, have you seen the size of Jay? He could crush their skulls in if he wasn't so good natured and he and Ryan could be in their relationship without anyone suspecting a thing.”
“Right, so, can you think of anyone who would want to hurt your brother?” Eric asked.
“He used to work at one of the high end clubs as a bouncer, and he kicked a lot of guys out for harassment, drunk stupidity, that sort of thing,” Maria said, a thoughtful expression on her face. “When he was working for a promotion here, he and this other guy, Sean Anderson were both competing for it and Jay beat him. He'd be the guy you'd want to talk to.”
“Alright, thank you so much for this information, this clears up a lot,” Calleigh said, smiling as she stood. “Oh, do you know where we can find this Sean Anderson?”
“Yeah, three floors down,” Maria said, leading them out of the meeting room. When they got to the elevators, Maria hit the down button just as her cell when off. “Excuse me,” she said, walking off to find a private talk with her caller.
“You know, I never pegged Ryan to be gay, let alone into the BDSM scene,” Eric said when she was out of earshot. “I mean, I thought he was into Boa Vista. I guess it explains some of the marks he's shown up with over the last six months.”
“He could be bi. Does his sexuality bother you?” Calleigh asked, watching her friend closely.
“No, no, I kind of just admire how well he hid it,” Eric admitted. “I'm a CSI, Cal, I was trained to see these things.”
“We're trained to be snoopy, not find out every detail of our friends lives,” Calleigh said, smiling. “Frankly, I don't blame him for hiding it so fiercely, he came from patrol.” Maria returned as the elevator doors opened. Calleigh frowned she looked close to tears. “Hey, are you alright?”
The brunette shook her head. “No, my lawyer just called and told me the cause of Jay's death and that it could happen to Ryan too.”
“What do you mean it could happen to Ryan? What did you lawyer tell you and how he get this information?” Eric asked insistently, ushering the distraught girl into the elevator.
“He's or family lawyer and he also represents Ryan,” Maria said wearily. “He told me he talked to the coroner who did Jay's autopsy and she said he died from an STD. I'm going to the hospital to see Ryan. Please phone me when you guys find out who wanted my cousin dead.”
Eric gave her a reassuring smile. “Don't worry, we will.” A moment later, the elevator slowed to a stopped and opened.
