Chapter Three: I Spy With My Little Eye… Something Red…
Monday Morning-Afternoon
Satoshi groaned. He sat up abruptly, causing a little white ball of fluff to roll off his chest. Wiz looked up at the Hikari and gave out an angry `kyuu' before hopping off in the direction of the door. The blunette sighed, knowing that he'd spend his entire day looking for Niwa. He hoped that the red-head could stay out of trouble for just a few days. This felt like the whole Snow and Ice incident nearly a year ago.
He finally got up out of the bed and began dressing, cursing under his breath. Krad chuckled at his tamer's expense. `If you had not grown so attached to the boy, Satoshi-sama, you wouldn't have to bear this burden.'
“Just shut up, Krad…” Satoshi sighed.
`Touchy…' the fallen angel sniffed.
He was going to argue with his other self when there was a sudden knock on there door. Satoshi glared. “Who is it?”
“Um… Riku…” came the timid reply. “Is Daisuke there?”
Satoshi thought how he should respond. He couldn't tell the elder Harada that he failed to find Niwa. He was opening his mouth to speak when he caught sight of a ball of smoke. Before him stood Daisuke, or so it looked like. “Wiz?”
The rabbit nodded his head fiercely. “Find… Daisuki!”
“That's DaisuKE…” the Hikari laughed at the mispronunciation of Niwa's name.
“Daisu…ke?” Wiz mimicked.
The blunette nodded and headed toward the door, the Harada was knocking frantically at this point, demanding that she talked to her boyfriend. He opened it. “I'm not stopping you.”
Riku immediately shook the rabbit firmly. “Where have you been? Where do you get off running away from me then leaving us all to worry about you!?”
Satoshi could see the sweat and uneasy look on Wiz's face. “Um…”
“He went out for a walk,” the tamer said, breaking the tension. “Everyone needs alone time, Harada-san. Don't be too hard with Niwa.”
With that said, he left and immediately headed in the direction of the Higurashi Shrine. Knowing he was going to regret this decision later, he mentally prodded his other half. “Do you feel anything?”
`Of course I do, Satoshi-sama,' Krad answered. `It is faint, but if you keep heading in that direction, I am sure that it will grow stronger.'
Within a few minutes, he reached the shrine. The blunette teen walked up the stairs, hoping to get a better look around the place. It was small, but looked normal enough. There was a well house and a tree with charms placed around it. Also, there was a house. In fact, an old man was sweeping in front of it. Satoshi groaned inwardly at the thought of talking to anyone, but he knew that this was the last place the Harada had seen Niwa.
“Excuse me,” he said.
The old man looked up. “Yes? How can I help you?”
“A group of my friends were here yesterday, do you remember them?”
“Ah… yes… Those teenagers… Two of them were really interested in the greatness of our family's shrine. The other two… Hmph!”
“One of them went missing,” Satoshi began, “the one with bright red hair.”
“Missing, you say?” The old man mused. “I'm sorry to hear.”
“This is the last place anyone has seen him since yesterday.”
He glared at the young police chief. “What are you getting at?”
`The tree, Satoshi-sama,' Krad suddenly said. `There is a powerful aura emitting from it. I don't like it.'
“Forgive me, but I'm not blaming you. I only wish to look around. In fact, I am very interested in that tree that I saw earlier.”
“The Sacred Tree?” the old man beamed. “Why, it is a Tree of Ages. It has a link to every era, every time that it exists in. That was legend says”
`Truly? That is very interesting, ne Satoshi-sama?'
“Do you think that there is any truth to that myth?” the tamer asked quietly.
`I would not doubt such a thing. Afterall, if a painting could end up as a portal to another realm, why not this tree?'
“That old story? Probably not,” the old man answered.
“Grandpa!” cried a high-pitched voice from the well house.
“Ah! Kagome!” the old man grinned. “What a surprise!”
The girl had bluish eyes and longer black hair. She ran up to her grandfather, panting from the short jog. “What do you know about the Sacred Tree!?”
“Um… Kagome…”
“We were just discussing the very same thing,” Satoshi mused.
Kagome turned and looked at the tamer. “Who are you?”
“Hiwatari Satoshi,” he replied curtly.
“So, then, do you know Daisuke?” she asked, cautiously.

Daisuke sat on the back of Kagome's bicycle. After hearing about their dilemma about the evil hanyou known as Naraku, he wanted to help the tachi out. Dark protested at first, but eventually gave in, knowing that they couldn't get back anyway. Actually, they were going to go to the well so that Kagome could return home for a little while and perhaps find out more about the tree. They had left Shippo behind so he could sleep in this morning. The thing that was creeping him out was some of the actions that the monk was taking. Earlier that morning he was caressing the demon hunder's butt, only to have a red mark across his face. Now, it seemed that Mirokou had not learned his lesson earlier. He was going to try it again. Just a pervert like Dark…
`Hey!' said thief responded.
You are a pervert, Dark.
`Am not. I just know how to deal with the ladies.'
Tch… With how you act, I'd almost think that…
`Don't even go there, Daisuke,' the kaitou warned.
You really don't like girls. Dai couldn't help but snicker at the string of curses and protests that rang through the walls of his mind. Just to push the kaitou into an even deeper frenzy, he tacked on, Me thinks you protest too much.
`DAISUKE!'
“So, Kagome,” Daisuke asked. “Think you can deliver a message to a friend of mine?”
“Sure,” she grinned as the tachi came to the Bone Eater's Well. “Who is it?”
“Hiwatari Satoshi.”
`Well if I were going to say, maybe your reaction to Riku was worn out due to the fact that you, instead, have a crush on Creepy Boy!' Dark teased.
“Are you okay, Dai-chan?” Kagome asked, seeing the boy's face turn as red as his garnet colored hair.
“F-fine!” he replied, ignoring the jeers from his other half. “Can you find him and tell him that I am just fine?”
“Why is it so important that you get a message to the guy?” Inuyasha asked, leaning against the well's base.
“Inuyasha!” Sango chided. “Everybody will think he'd just vanished! Of course he would want his closest friend to know that he's okay!”
`Since when is Hiwatari our closest friend?'
He DOES know everything about us, Dark. And he's okay with that. We don't have to hide anything from him, so I guess he really is our closest friend.
`Yeah,' Dark snorted. `One that wants us behind bars…'
“I'll be back,” Kagome said, sitting at the well's edge. “See you soon!”
Daisuke watched as she hopped into the well. Inuyasha sat up and groaned. He sniffed the air. The hanyou frowned. Mirokou had the same frown. Daisuke could hear the fire-cat, Kirara, hissing and spitting. Sango was already getting out her deadly weapon (a/n: I forget what it's called at the moment ^^;). Daisuke couldn't see anything.
`There's something coming this way, Dai. It feels powerful. Let me take control, hurry!'
Daisuke willingly let go and allowed the kaitou to possess his body. They couldn't transform into Dark's form without the rest of the tachi knowing about the family curse. It was taboo, especially from Emiko. Dark glanced at the rest of the group. “What is it?”
“I smell Naraku,” the silver-haired half demon growled, pulling out his father's fang. “But I doubt it's him.”
“That's a bet you'd win, Inuyasha,” an evil female voice taunted.
Dark glanced in the direction the voice came from. A woman hovered over the ground in her long white feather. She landed, the feather returning to its place in her hair. The woman was not human, judging by the tapered ears and pupil-less crimson eyes. She held onto a single fan, and her hair was black and pulled back into a bun. The look on her face was like a cat who wanted nothing better to do than to irritate the mouse before killing it.
“Kagura,” Inuyasha growled.
Her attention, however, focused on the newest “member” of the tachi. “Just who are you?”
“Hey!” the hanyou hissed. “Are you ignoring us!?”
“Yeah…” Dark smirked. “I don't think it's any of your business anyway.”
“Baka!” the wind witch frowned, rasing her fan. “Don't you dare say such a thing to me, human!”
I think you angered her, Dark.
`Really? What gave that away?'
She waves her fan and everyone tensed. “Dance of Blades!”
Dark immediately saw why you do not want to anger someone who can manipulate the wind. In that instant, there were sharp squalls heading right in his direction. Without hesitation, Dark whipped out one of the dark feathers that Emiko had started insisting Daisuke keeping in his back pocket. He would have to grovel before the woman when they got back for that stroke of genius.
The wind parted and swirled around Dark on either side. He breathed heavily in relief. “Now that wasn't very nice of you.”
“Daisuke!” Inuyasha yelled. “Get out of the way!”
Dark looked over in the hanyou's direction. The small sword that he was wearing at his side now looked about the same size he was. Dark could feel the inu's aura encircling the blade and clashing with Kagura's. Understanding, the kaitou got out of the way as he heard Inuyasha shout. “Wind Scar!”
Kagura waved her fan and the attack completely missed, crashing into some poor innocent trees that were on the sidelines. “Have you forgotten so easily, Inuyasha?”
Mirokou wanted so desperately to use his Wind Tunnel, but he had noticed the insects watching them. Naraku was watching this fight… He could almost feel the evil hanyou's gaze. What bothered him more though was the aura emitting around the red-head. It was not his own, but that second one he had felt earlier.

The monk was correct. A hanyou, covered in the skin of a white baboon, watched the battle with interest through the void's mirror. The boy was indeed peculiar, even more so than the girl who had disappeared through the well and returned to her own time.
“What do you make of the boy, Kanna?”
“He has two souls,” replied the white-haired void in monotone. “One is old and the other is not of this time.”
“I see…” Naraku smiled evilly. “I think that a visit to Tsubaki might be in order.”
“You killed her, though.”
“And I can bring her back,” the hanyou laughed. “Is it not that simple?”
“May I ask why?” Kanna asked apathetically.
“So I may not dirty my own hands, Kanna.”

`Dai… I am going to use some magic. Please bear with me.'
Got it!
Dark began to chant. He held the feather at a different angle with each spoken syllable. Flipping his wrist with determination, Dark was going to paralyze the incarnation. At least then she wouldn't be a threat and Inuyasha could then use his own attack.
Or that was what he was aiming to do. Unfortunately Kagura felt the magical energy rising and was already swinging her fan. Dark had to make a quick decision. He stopped midway through the spell and sprinted towards the wind witch. She was whipped her fan. “Dance of Blades!”
“Shit!” Dark hissed as he tried to dodge out of the way. The breeze caught against his arm, tearing a slight gash in his flesh.
Inuyasha and Sango took a glance at each other and nodded. The demon hunter threw her boomerang at the same time as Inuyasha launched another attack from Tetsaiga. Kagura ripped her eyes away from the red-head. Using one swift motion of her fan, the wind knocked both attacks harmlessly to the side. (a/n: those poor trees! Mr. Redinger would be in tears!)
This provided enough of a distraction for the kaitou. Kagura realized this a split second too late. She was staring into violet eyes. Dark grasped the witch's wrist and twisted slightly, causing her to drop her only weapon. He then placed the dark feather upon her arm, knowing that he only provided enough magical energy to paralyze the limb. He smirked at the glowering look on the incarnations face. “You!”
“I think you'd better leave before you are killed by the rest of the gang, don't you?” he replied, winking.
Kagura growled in anger, using her spare arm to pull out her feather. Sitting on it, she glared at the kaitou. “I will get you for this, I swear!”
Dark only smirked as she left, insects and all. What he didn't expect were the glares on the faces of the rest of the tachi. Inuyasha tapped his foot impatiently. “What the hell was with that?”
“It seems the boy has not been completely truthful with us,” Mirokou smiled warmly. “Why don't you allow the boy to tell us, hmmm? Whatever your name is?”
“Huh?” the hanyou frowned.
“So you can tell us apart, huh, monk? Thought you might be able to.”
He can sense the difference in us!? Why didn't you tell me this sooner, Dark!?
`It wasn't important, Daisuke.'
“Your aura is very different from Daisuke's,” the monk replied.
“What are you talking about, Mirokou?” Sango asked.
“He's kind of two people,” Kagome answered for the monk, trying to climb out of the well's edge.
“You're back already?” Inuyasha huffed. “That's so like you, stupid, to be gone right when he had a battle.”
“Inuyasha!” Kagome glared. “SIT!”
A loud crash was heard as the hanyou did a face plant into the dirt. Kagome walked up to Daisuke. “Hiwatari-san explained everything to me. So, you must be Dark-san?”
Dark winked. “The one and only Phantom Thief! Although, I need to rest, so here ya go, Daisuke.”
Daisuke blinked as he regained control of himself. He smiled sheepishly at the rest of the tachi demanding an explanation. “Well… Um…”
“Let's go back to Kaede's first,” Kagome smiled brightly. “Then I will tell you what Hiwatari-san said.”
“So you met him?”
“He seems worried to me.”
PAGEBREAK
Satoshi sat on his bed, wondering how he was going to manage pulling Niwa back from the Feudal Era. The talk with the girl known as Kagome was a strange one indeed. To think that she was traveling from this time to the past was something else. At first, he didn't know if he could believe her or not. It was then that she insisted that she wasn't lying and showed the police chief the shards. If it hadn't been for Krad sensing the energy within them, he should have still doubted the girl's claims, though he didn't know weather he should completely believe her or not.
`She tells us the truth,' Krad acknowledged. `She claimed the well was made from the Tree of Ages as well, so it would make sense that it was the tree that transported your precious red-head back by five hundred years. The girl is also a miko, Satoshi-sama. What will you plan to do?'
“I will research. Hopefully I will come up with a way to either go there myself or bring Niwa-kun back.”
`Niwa-kun? Are we no longer in denial?'
“Whatever…” Satoshi snorted.
It was then that the white rabbit, still in Daisuke's from came clambering into the room. He shut the door behind him, panting hard. In the next instant there was a poof of smoke and the critter darted away. Wiz pounced onto the tamer's lap, scared as hell.
He knew why too. Spending the day with Riku would scare the Hikari as well.
Wiz nuzzled against the blunette. He looked down at the ball of fur. Apparently Riku didn't register the difference between the two. He wondered if that was a good thing or a bad one. Shrugging, he pulled out a book. It wasn't going to do any good now to worry. There were things he needed to look into.
