Chapter 15: “Just Another Day at School?”
"Enlighten me, Krad," Satoshi demanded as he sat in his car with his arms folded over his chest.
(There isn't much to it), responded Krad.
"Inform me."
(You should have figured it out by now,) Krad grinned. (the curse is simple. A joining of the family results in the conception of twins, which, believe it or not, is something our families don't want and dread.)
"And why is that?"
(It's impossible for Dark and I to be joined in one vassal, and because of this, the mother… in this case, father, will labor twins so that our manifestation will continue to thrive. The Hikaris and the Niwas do not want a joining of their families, and see twins as something they rather not handle since each family only wants to have one child. Male or female. It doesn't matter.)
"So, they see twins as something repulsive?"
(Yes.)
"And they see it as something honorable to only have a single child? Such idiots. I wouldn't consider this as a curse," said Satoshi. "It's a blessing."
(It depends how you look at it. But to think that Dark and I will share the same blood is utterly repulsive! In addition, it'll just make things harder for me. How am I supposed to annihilate Dark when our vassals are brothers?!)
"The chances of you two ever seeing each other again are slim. Joined under one family that doesn't like the idea of having multiple kids decreases the chances of there ever being a civil war among the family. I like this."
(You forget, my vassal. You are having twins. The likely hood of me ever having the chance to see Dark again isn't any different than how it has been for the last hundreds of years. Your children will eventually produce children regardless of sexuality, and our bloodlines will continue. If by chance two sons are produced around the same time, then we shall fight again. Only, it will be within our own family. Brother against brother; cousin against cousin. We will shed our own blood through each other. It will be beautiful.)
"You disgust me."
(Why are you disgusted with me when it was your tenaciously licentious feelings for Daisuke that drove you to "accidentally" impregnating him? And they will be twins no less… Such ecstasy will eventually result in some regretful manner.)
"You are the curse, Krad. It is regretful that the Hikaris could ever think about producing an heir that will become the next vassal for your manifestation."
(What a pit…) With that, Krad vanished from Satoshi's thoughts.
~Several hours later~
The limousine parked itself along the sidewalk as Daisuke jumped out waving goodbye to Riku.
"Hikari is going to kill me," Daisuke said to himself as he opened the apartment door. "It's already after ten! I know he's going to give me another one of his long and irrational speeches about how he cares so much about me and how I should tell him where I am at all times because he worries about me…"
Daisuke climbed the stairs since the elevator was out of order.
(Don't wear yourself out,) Daisuke.
("I know that!") Daisuke was just about to knock on the front door to Satoshi's apartment when the door was mysteriously opened for him. "Uh…"
"Just in time, Niwa." There was a worried look on Satoshi's face.
"Hikari, I know that you must be mad at me for disappearing all day, but I-"
"Your mother is here, Daisuke," Satoshi said.
"What?!"
Satoshi opened the door all the way, and Daisuke spotted his mother on the other side holding a handkerchief to her face with subtle tears.
"Oh, Daisuke," his mother said, "I've missed you so much!"
She held out her arms to him as Daisuke walked in and asked, "Why didn't you warn me before you came?"
Emiko lower her arms. "Well, why don't you ever call?! You've been worrying me sick! For three whole months we haven't heard of you! What kind of a son are you to worry your parents so much?!"
"I'm sorry! It's just that a lot has happened recently."
(Oh yeah. Lots... Care to explain, Daisuke?)
"Well, because of your lack of communication, I decided to drop in on you two and see what's happening."
"How long have you been here?" asked Daisuke.
"Your mother has been here since three this afternoon. She refused to leave until she saw you," Satoshi explained.
"Oh wow! Mom, you should have called first."
Emiko ran across the room to hug her Daisuke, but he jumped back. Confused, Emiko asked, "What's wrong, Daisuke?"
"Umm… I don't like to be hugged."
"Nonsense. You've always liked it when your mommy hugged you before."
"Well… now I don't…" Daisuke looked over to Satoshi as if asking him for his help. Satoshi shrugged as if saying, "think of something yourself".
"Come on, Daisuke. Give your mommy a hug," Emiko said as she tried to hug Daisuke.
"Ah! No!" Daisuke sped across the room and said, "Sorry, I have an exam I have to study for!"
Emiko crossed her arms over her chest. "Now I know something is wrong." She looked suspiciously over at Satoshi.
"Why is it that I am always blamed when something doesn't seem right?" Satoshi asked.
Emiko narrowed her eyes at Satoshi.
"Well then," she sighed, "although I don't want to, I'm afraid I'll have to leave." She looked back over at Daisuke. "And if you don't call or swing by the house once every week, I'll be coming over to check up on you," she warned. "Ok, bye bye, Daisuke!" With that, she left.
There was a moment of silence before Daisuke exclaimed, "I'm so sorry! If I had known that my mom intended to swing by to check up on me, then I would have visited her!"
"I don't think much of it," said Satoshi. "I know that I would worry if my child was at someone else's house for a long period of time and never called."
Daisuke nodded.
"Get to bed," Satoshi suddenly ordered. "You have school tomorrow." Daisuke frowned, but Satoshi ordered, "Go," as he pointed down the hall.
"Why are you suddenly ordering me around?" asked Daisuke.
Satoshi advanced towards Daisuke. "Because I know what is best for you and the twins."
Daisuke spun around and headed towards the bedroom, mumbling under his breath, "Meanie."
"I heard that," said Satoshi.
The door closed and there was nothing but silence.
~The Next Day~
"Hikari!" Daisuke yelled from the bathroom.
"What?" asked Satoshi, who was sitting down on the couch, reading the newspaper and drinking his coffee.
"Do you have a safety pin? My pants won't fit right."
"In the bottom drawer."
"Thanks!"
"Hurry up, or you'll be late," Satoshi called as he thought, ("I really need to get him some new clothes.")
Satoshi drove Daisuke to school, and as soon as they entered the building, they split up. Daisuke turned around for a second to see where Satoshi was going; they had art class first block together, so why did he suddenly just walk off?
"Hey, Daisuke," Daisuke turned around to see Riku standing behind him.
"Hey!"
"What's the matter?"
"Oh…" he turned around to see if he could catch a second glimpse of Satoshi, but he had already turned the corner, "it's nothing."
In art class, Daisuke tried extra hard to pay attention to the demonstration the professor was giving, but he was just so tired, and to top it off, Satoshi wasn't there. (" Where is he? Did he switch classes?")
His art class lasted about two hours before there was a break. As Daisuke packed his art supplies, he wondered if he should he go and search for Satoshi. Was that the smartest of ideas, or should he just leave Satoshi be until he was to see him later that afternoon?
"Maybe I should just check on him," Daisuke nodded. "I won't say anything. I'll just see where he went off to."
As Daisuke slipped out of his class before Riku could catch him, he sped down the halls to see if he could catch a glimpse at Satoshi as he walked to his next class. In the end, he actually bumped into Satoshi heading towards the art department.
"Hikari?" Daisuke froze.
"In a hurry, are we?" Satoshi asked as he passed by Daisuke. "Don't wear yourself out."
("Should I ask him where he was? Should I ask him if he's trying to avoid me?") Daisuke turned around and caught Satoshi by the arm. "Umm…" ( "Great! Now what am I suppose to say?")
"Satooooooshiiiiiiii!" Out of nowhere, Risa came bouncing and glomped Satoshi. "How are you today?!" she asked as she snuggled closer to him. "I haven't seen you all day, and you haven't called! What kind of a relationship are we sharing?!"
("Relationship?") Daisuke's eyes widen. ("Is she…?")
"Warn me before you glomp me next time, Risa." Satoshi stroked her cheek for a moment, completely ignoring Daisuke in the process.
"Hikari?" Even though Daisuke would rather ignore it, he felt an overwhelming feeling of dejection building up inside of him.
"Come on, Sato! We are going to be late for our next class if we don't hurry."
As Risa pulled Satoshi away from Daisuke, she glanced back at Daisuke so see his reaction, and as soon as she was able to, she turned the corner with Satoshi.
"What was that?" Daisuke asked himself as he stood dumbstruck.
Risa stood with Satoshi behind the corner, watching Daisuke as she asked, "Do you think it worked?"
"I don't think what we're doing is having any affect on him, Risa."
"But when we took off together, I could have sworn he looked a little…"
"Relieved?" asked Satoshi.
"No! He looked stunned. Like he couldn't believe what he was seeing."
"Great, now I'm going to have some explaining to do when I get home."
"No you don't!" assured Risa. "Just shrug it off as if it weren't anything new. Just keep playing the right cards and slowly…"
"I'll lose whatever chance I had with him…" Crestfallen at the thought, Satoshi said, "I'm not so sure this scenario of yours is going to work."
"I'm sure it will in the long run!" Risa gave Satoshi a pat on the back. "Now cheer up and get to your next class."
~Later that night~
After he had finished his daily classes, Satoshi convinced Risa to let him hang out with her for a few hours while he sorted through his head what he was going to say later to Daisuke. Could he really just say that he found a potential date worthy of his time? Should he even acknowledge the truth?
"No…" Satoshi mumbled to himself. There was just no way he could without Daisuke taking the investigation further. "He'll probably yell at me for most of the night."
"Like I said, just ignore it," said Risa.
"Easy for you to say, but you don't know Daisuke like I do. He can be very persistent."
Time was approaching eight at night when Satoshi finally decided to head back to the apartment.
"Wish me luck," he said as he waved goodbye to Risa.
"Lots and lots!"
She took off in her own car, and Satoshi drove in his own car home.
Once he was at the apartment, he took his time walking up the steps to his door; it was the first time in ages that he wasn't looking forward to being there.
"I just hope Daisuke didn't throw anything while I was gone," he slowly opened the door, but found no Daisuke. "Niwa?" Satoshi looked around the kitchen to find a pot half filled with ramen. "At least he ate."
Satoshi then decided to check up on Daisuke in his room, but as he entered, he noticed that Daisuke was asleep. Satoshi smiled for a second, but then he noticed that Daisuke had tearstains along his cheek. Stunned for a moment, Satoshi approached the redheaded boy and decided to take a closer look at his face. There were indeed tearstain marks along his cheek. He wasn't hallucinating.
("Was this my doing? Is Daisuke upset because of me?")
Satoshi was just about to leave Daisuke to sleep when suddenly Daisuke's eyes opened.
"Hi… Hikari?" Daisuke lightly moaned.
"Huh?" Satoshi felt horrible when he heard the tint of worry in the redhead's voice,\. "Yes…" Satoshi scould see a sign of relief in Daisuke's eyes as he closed them and drifted back off to sleep. "Were you worried about me?" Satoshi whispered, knowing Daisuke wouldn't hear.
However, Daisuke gave a light moan, and Satoshi took that as a hint to leave, and so he did, closing the door softly as he left.
