Chapter 20:

“The Resolution”

Riku sighed as she admired the sparkling diamond set on the ring. “Don't like it?” asked her date who sat next to her.

“It's not that. We've only been engaged for a few days and I'm already getting cold feet.” Riku curled her toes and looked away from the ring.

“You don't have to marry him; you know that?”

“Trying to tell me something, Saehara?”

Saehara took Riku's hand in his and he stroked her ring finger, “I finally have you, but you're engaged.”

“Don't be silly, Saehara. As long as no one breaks wind about this, we can keep seeing each other.” Riku squeezed Saehara's hand.

Saehara took a sip of his coffee, “Yes, but I'd rather have you to myself. Is that too much to ask for?”

“Well…,” Riku ruminated about the notion, “I don't know. I like Daisuke a lot and all. We've been together for so long it's hard to think about life without him.”

“You can still be friends.”

“Stop it. I'm getting married to Daisuke in six months or so.”

“That soon?” there was devastation in Saehara's voice.

“Well yeah! I want to be married and out of that house.”

Saehara arched an eyebrow. What was gnawing at her nerves? “I don't see why you'd want to move out so fast. It isn't like you're living a horrible life.”

“Well, I think it's about time I get a place of my own and start a family.”

Saehara nearly choked on his coffee, “Already?”

“Daisuke's adorable so no doubt that his children would be just as cute.”

Saehara sighed. There was no way he was going to convince Riku to drop her marriage plans that easily.

DAISUKENIWADAISUKENIWADAISUKENIWA

Emiko threw the letter into the air and laughed boisterously. “Yes!!! Daisuke's getting married!”

While massaging his sleepy eyes, Daisuke father came down the stairs, “What's with all the racket, Emiko? It's barely eight.”

Emiko picked up the letter and read the main point aloud, “Daisuke has proposed to Riku!”

Kosuke's eyes bulged. “You're pulling my leg! Daisuke? Our little Daisuke?”

Emiko spun around and leaped, “I can still remember our wedding day,” she woolgathered for a moment before she snapped, “our little Daisuke is getting married and I want everything to go perfectly.”

“Emiko, he was just engaged the other day. Give the boy a rest. They're probably not gonna get married for another few years or so.”

“Nonsense. If I've learned a thing or two about Riku, it's that that girl isn't very patient. She'll want to get married as soon as possible.”

Emiko ran out of the room to fetch the phone book, “Now, I'll have to call the church and make reservations. Oh, Kosuke, what's the name of that restaurant that Daisuke is so fond of?”

“Um… Sea Monster?”

“Not when he was a kid, Kosuke. I meant now.”

“Beats me.”

“Whatever,” Emiko waved her hand. “Fetch my old wedding planner, won't you dear?”

“Of course, master,” Kosuke mumbled sarcastically as he went back upstairs to bed.

“Actually, scratch that. We're going to Hikari's apartment!”

SATOSHIHIKARISATOSHIHIKARISATOSHIHIKARI

Satoshi was leaning against the sink and to occupy his time while he waited for the tea to boil, he reminisced about last nights events. He didn't know how they ended up where they were now exactly. He remembered something about returning home, finding Daisuke, confessing again like he has been doing, and now… Daisuke's his fiancé? “How did we ever manage this?”

While Satoshi ran his hand through his hair to help relax and soothe his mind, the door bell rang and the water began to boil. Satoshi lowered the flames and then headed towards the door. He peaked through the little peak-hole hoping that his unexpected visitors weren't anyone important, and then gaped and began panicking when he recognized Emiko's unwanted face. “Oh god… why now?”

Satoshi reluctantly opened the door and smiled, “What brings you here?”

Emiko invited herself in and searched the room for Daisuke, “Where is my son?”

“Shower.”

Emiko ran over to the bathroom door and began an onslaught of knocks, “Daisuke! I know you're in there! Hurry on out and tell your mother about the great news!”

Kosuke then walked in and greeted Satoshi, “Sorry about the sudden intrusion.”

(“You better be,”) Satoshi thought to himself as he feigned forgiveness.

As Kosuke walked further into the room, Satoshi's eyes settled on something shinny on the floor. (“The ring!”) Satoshi quickly picked up the ring Riku had given to Daisuke and shoved it into his pocket. No one saw it. They wouldn't know the difference. But that at the moment was the least of his worries.

He would have to come up with something fast. Daisuke's parents were going to address Daisuke's sudden engagement to Riku as soon as he steps out of the shower. What a scene it would become if Daisuke broke news that he was currently engaged to Satoshi instead. However… that wasn't all. It's been months since Emiko has actually seen Daisuke, so she isn't going to be oblivious to Daisuke's sudden enormous stomach. Even a nearly blind man would take notice of Daisuke's sudden physical change. Satoshi ran up to Emiko and suggested, “Please wait in the living room while Daisuke finishes his shower.”

Emiko narrowed her eyes at Satoshi, but the blue haired man wouldn't back down.

Emiko walked over to the living room and joined Kosuke on the couch. Once the cost was clear, Satoshi knocked on the bathroom door softly, “Daisuke, it's me.”

Daisuke opened the door and pulled Satoshi in, “When did they show up?!” Daisuke was in a state of panic.

“Shh!” Satoshi pressed his finger to Daisuke's lips, “We can pull this off if we do it right.”

“But I don't want to lie to my mom, Satoshi, she always figures me out!”

“Well, do you want to tell her now?”

Daisuke's head dropped. It was still too soon. “My mom isn't going to let this pass, Satoshi. I can't tell her I'm with you now, and I can't let her see me like this.”

Satoshi placed his hand on Daisuke's womb and then he gasped. “I can feel them moving…,” Satoshi's other hand came around to touch Daisuke's stomach, “They're awake.”

Daisuke blushed, “They were moving around a lot last night.”

“Why didn't you tell me?” Satoshi inquired.

“I was a little preoccupied with other issues that had to be attended to.”

Satoshi leaned in and pecked Daisuke's lips, “We're in this together, Daisuke. I'll follow you up with any story.”

Five minutes later and the two boys emerged from the bathroom. Emiko immediately stood up and was about to hug her Daisuke, but a major physical change called to her attention first. “What on earth have you been doing, Daisuke?!”

“Um… stress…?”

Emiko looked over at Satoshi and back at Daisuke, “How could you let yourself go like that?”

“Mom, it's ok. I'm on a diet program now. It'll all be gone soon. I promise.”

“You'd better hope so, Daisuke Niwa, or I'll have you back at home and under my own strict diet plan. No son of mine is going to get married in that shape.”

Daisuke nodded, “I understand, mom.”

“But that's not what I'm here for,” Emiko guided her son to the couch which was a relief to Daisuke. His feet were aching, “So, tell me what happened.”

Daisuke glanced over his shoulder at Satoshi. The boy was frightened and didn't know what to say, “We were at a party,” Satoshi started off.

“And…, I guess…,” he could tell Emiko the truth… just about what happened the other day; not last night. “Her mother passed me a ring.”

“So you didn't buy the ring?” Emiko's mouth dropped.

“No. It was the family's ring and Riku's mother wanted me to present it to Riku. So I did… in front of the whole family. Naturally Riku said yes. End of story.”

Emiko didn't have that same excited look as before. If anything, she was disappointed in her son, “You didn't buy your girlfriend a ring?”

“You asked me that. No I didn't.”

“Daisuke, I thought I brought you up right.”

“I hadn't planned to get engaged to Riku,” this caught Satoshi's attention. Daisuke had failed to mention that little detail. “It was just a bit untimely.”

Emiko shook her head, “I'm very disappointed in you, Daisuke Niwa. First, you leave my house; second, you gain weight on me; and third, you don't buy your girlfriend a ring and just propose to her out of the blue. No plans. No nothing.”

“Things are going to change soon, mom. I promise.”

Satoshi smiled. Things were definitely going to change.

DAISUKENIWADAISUKENIWADAISUKENIWA

“Phew… I thought they were never going to leave,” three hours later and Satoshi finally had Daisuke to himself again.

“Daisuke, do you want some tea?” Satoshi pressed his left hand against the couch and leaned in towards Daisuke.

“Yeah… please,” Daisuke blushed and smiled tenderly.

Satoshi held his gaze then nudged Daisuke's cheek with his nose, “I love you so much…, please stay with me always….”

Daisuke felt his heart growing warm and its steady beat accelerating. “Stop it,” Daisuke giggled. “You make me blush.”

Satoshi sat down next to Daisuke. He was never going to let this person vanish from his life. He wrapped his arms around Daisuke and drew the boy in. “You're precious to me.”

Just then, the door bell rang again. “Who can that be?” Satoshi asked himself as he stared at the door.

Daisuke shook his head and held onto Satoshi, “Don't answer it. I don't want company.”

Satoshi kissed Daisuke's forehead and then withdrew in order to answer the door. Satoshi peaked out of the peephole and then gaped. “It's Riku…,” Satoshi whispered.

Daisuke flinched and then looked over the couch. “What should we do?” he asked Satoshi.

Satoshi then smirked. He had an idea. There was something he wanted to test and the only way to carry out such an experiment to prove his theory was to let the devil in. Satoshi turned the lock then opened the door. “What do you want?” Satoshi asked rudely.

Riku was filing her nails outside. When Satoshi had finally opened the door, she continued to file as she asked, “Where's Daisuke?”

“You're a sore in my sight,” Satoshi was about to growl.

Riku seized filing her nails and placed her foot between the door and the threshold. “I'm here to see Daisuke and I won't leave until I do.” Riku looked passed Satoshi and quickly spotted Daisuke's red hair. “Daisuke!! Sweetie! It's me!”

Riku pushed the door open then ran inside. Satoshi then closed the door and watched to see what Daisuke was going to do. If he really loved Satoshi like Daisuke claimed, then Daisuke would prove it by any means, and right now, Satoshi wanted Daisuke to break off any and all connections with Riku. Satoshi shouldn't have to ask Daisuke to do something like that for him. Daisuke should already know from pass events that Satoshi is quite the selfish being when it came to his significant other. “Riku…”

Riku sat down on the couch and took Daisuke's hand in his. “I've missed you, Daisuke. Do you want to go out shopping with me right now?”

Daisuke was about to answer, but a sudden pang in his abdomen caused his to yelp then clutch his abs in pain. Satoshi unfolded his arms then looked over. If anything, Daisuke was suffering from cramps due to his pregnancy. If anything, Daisuke was very close to labor day.

After a few, very long seconds, Daisuke released his stomach and decided to breathe. “Sorry, Riku, but today isn't a good day. I have a lot of things to get done.”

“But there's some new styles in and I want you to see me in them. I want you to help me pick out some clothes.”

Daisuke shook his head. “Maybe another time.”

(“Stop wasting time and be done with that insufferable woman!”) Satoshi screamed to himself.

Riku nodded then leaned in to give Daisuke a kiss, but quickly, as he had done before, Satoshi was there to block off Daisuke. “Daisuke's busy, so leave.”

Riku looked Satoshi in the eye then stood up. “Look, mister, I don't know what your problem is, but it had better stop. Daisuke and I are engaged to be married. We have all the right to kiss each other.”

Satoshi wanted so bad to tell Riku that she couldn't do that with Daisuke any longer, but he wanted Daisuke to be the one to tell her. It wouldn't have meant anything to him if he told Riku. So Satoshi backed off. He walked away from the couch and stood by the door waiting. He knew that Daisuke was weak and not as inclined to push away others… even for Satoshi. (“Please… Daisuke… don't hurt me.”)

Riku then leaned in again to give Daisuke a kiss, but instead of allowing her to full on claim his lips, Daisuke turned away and allowed her to kiss his cheek. “Please Riku… not today… I'm not feeling all that well.”

Riku sat besides Daisuke, “Oh, Daisuke! Maybe you should come over to my place. I can take care of you,” Riku sat up and began to pull Daisuke's arm. “Please come with me, Daisuke.”

Satoshi watched helplessly from the corner. There was much anger and rage building up inside of him. Perhaps more than he could control. Any moment now, Krad was going to burst through.

“Please, Riku. Not today!”

“Daisuke, I love you. I want to take care of you. Please come with me,” Riku leaned in a bit more, but this time, Daisuke pressed his finger to Riku's lip.

Then, the cramps came back. Daisuke winced and dropped his head. He felt like something was going to tear any second. He looked over to Satoshi, his eyes begging his lover to help him. Satoshi got off the wall and came over to Daisuke. “Riku, leave now.”

Riku looked down at Daisuke who was clenching his stomach and groaning. “What's wrong?”

“Is it time?” Satoshi asked as he shoved Riku aside.

Riku stumbled to the side and was about to shout at Satoshi, if Daisuke hadn't started to cry. “Fuck… Satoshi, I need to get to the hospital…” He then whispered softly, “My water broke…”

“What's happening?” Riku looked utterly confused. “What's really wrong with Daisuke?”

Satoshi ignored Riku as he helped Daisuke up, then picked him up in his arms. “You weren't due for at least for another two weeks,” Satoshi whispered as he took Daisuke through the door and to the elevator. Riku didn't even bother to follow as Satoshi took Daisuke away.

Down at the car, Satoshi placed Daisuke in the back seat and then said, “I'm going to call the hospital.”

Daisuke leaned back and began breathing in deeply. “Oh god…. Satoshi… It hurts…”

“Breathe… just breathe.”

Daisuke did just that as Satoshi got into the front seat and called the hospital.

A/N: I plan on updating way sooner next time. I'm sorry this one took so long.
