Chapter Nineteen: “The Ring”

(Daisuke's POV)

Unconsciously, I felt instinctive to go after Satoshi. I couldn't just let him go like that! I was afraid he would do something terribly drastic if I didn't chase after him. I requested a car, and so a man in black called over a lemo. I got into the back seat and told the man where I lived. I wanted to see Satoshi so bad it ached.

(Satoshi's POV)

In my car I sat patiently. Due to the impact, part of the metal from the car door tore into my external oblique. I watched as the other member of the accident frantically dialed the emergency number. She looked panicked and yelled like she was the one with the metal part stuck in her side. Soon enough, that person cautiously approached my car. It was a teenage girl. She couldn't have been older than sixteen. “I'm so sorry,” she cried.

She was trembling, she was horrified, she was bleeding from her head, but it was only a minor scratch. I rested in my seat. I didn't dare to move in fear that I would do more damage to myself. I had no idea what other injuries I had. I then looked up at the sky as the sirens echoed through the streets. It was beginning to rain. Perfect… I whispered to myself.

The paramedics came to my side and carefully scrutinized the situation. I didn't listen as they yelled to each other back and forth. My side hurt too much and oh how I wished Daisuke was here. I wanted someone to hold my hand while they pried the door open. I winced again as I felt the metal withdrawing from my side. I looked up at the man in uniform. He was speaking calmly to me; ensuring me of my survival. I faked a smile before I closed my eyes. I felt so tired even while enduring all this pain. I just wanted Daisuke to hold me…

(Daisuke's POV)

“Satoshi!”

I pounded on Satoshi's apartment door. I had lost the spare key he just recently gave me and I was regretting it tremendously at the moment. “Please, Satoshi!” He can't be ignoring me! Satoshi has always been there to answer me.

Finally, after minutes of pounding on the door, I leaned my forehead against the solid door. My hands sprawled out then tried to claw onto the metal as my body gradually slid down its side. I rested on the floor with my knees up against my chest; my arms holding tightly to them. “Why can't I just tell Satoshi the truth?”

Daisuke…

Dark finally began to stir.

“I don't know what I want anymore…”

(Satoshi's POV)

I laid awake in the hospital bed while staring up at the most boring ceiling. I just wanted to go home, and since the doctor said that the metal hadn't gone too far into my side, I could go home… in a few days… They just wanted to make sure that everything healed up as it should. So, now I had a new debate going on in my head. “Should I call Daisuke and tell him of my injury?”

Nah. The kid's probably having too much fun celebrating his engagement to what's-her-face?

“Riku.”

That's right. Don't bug him. If anything, he'll probably get worried and come to see you. You'll ruin his celebration.

(Author's POV)

Crestfallen, Satoshi tried to get some rest. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine that he was back at his apartment with Daisuke sleeping in just the other room. But now, given the certain circumstances, it was difficult to picture. Satoshi would soon have to accept that Daisuke was going to be moving out soon… He was only so far away from having his twins. Once that was all over… Satoshi would be forced to disappear from Daisuke's life and let him live the way he chooses. It pained Satoshi more and more every time he thought about losing Daisuke. It almost made him wish that he would've been killed in that car accident.

Hours later, Satoshi found that he still couldn't sleep. His mind was wide awake and reminiscing memories that made Satoshi both happy and depressed. They were all about Daisuke. Daisuke sleeping, Daisuke trying to cook, Daisuke wearing that jelly bracelet, Daisuke falling in the pool and Satoshi snapping that jelly bracelet, Daisuke lying in bed with Satoshi just moments before their lives changed. “I should probably call him,” hesitantly, Satoshi reached over for the phone by his bed. He dialed his house number and when no one answered, he called Riku's house. “Hello?” surprisingly, Risa answer.

“Risa?”

“Satoshi? Hey, you sound really bad, are you Ok? Did something happen?”

“I got into an accident.”

“Oh my god! Are you Ok?! Does Daisuke know? What happened?!”

“It's alright. I'm going to live. I wanted to know if Daisuke is over there.”

“No… He left just after you did. I guess he saw you making your escape and so he followed. He hasn't been seen since. Did you try your apartment?”

“He's not there.”

“Does he have the keys to your apartment?”

“Of course he does.”

Risa was silent for a moment. Where else could Daisuke have gone in a situation like this? Being eight months pregnant, he couldn't move around that much. But if he wasn't at either of those two places, where was he? “Satoshi, are you sure that you have no idea where else he could be?”

“No. He never takes me to any of his `secret hideaways.'”

“I'm sorry. I'll go look for him…”

“It's Ok… I'm sure he's safe. Maybe he went to his real home.”

“You mean Emiko's house?”

Suddenly, Satoshi hung up and dialed the Niwa's residence number. He waited anxiously until he heard Emiko's voice, “Good evening, Mrs. Niwa, is Daisuke Niwa available?”

“No… He hasn't been here for a while, Hikari.”

How did she know it was him? “Oh, well, if you do hear from him, will you tell him that I will not be home for a few days?”

“Of course. Good night, Hikari.”

Emiko hung up and Satoshi was now left with anxiety. He worried enough about Daisuke as it was, but now that he had no idea where Daisuke was or if he was safe was stressing Satoshi out. “Of course he's safe,” Satoshi tried to tell himself, “He has Dark… and Wiz. They are always willing to help each other out.”

(A few days later)

“Ok, Mr. Hikari. Looks like everything is healing up just fine,” said the doctor, “You are free to go,” while the doctor went ahead and started writing notes down, Satoshi slipped out of the bed.

“By the way, would you know what happened to my car?”

“It was taken into an auto repair shop. Ms. Miya will be paying for all the damages. She also paid for your hospital fee, and for a taxi that is here to pick you up.”

“Quite the responsible girl.”

The doctor nodded then asked, “Which reminds me, I noticed that none of your family members came to visit you. Why is that? Do you know?”

Satoshi chuckled, “I'm all that's left. My family has been dead for years.”

The doctor smiled sympathetically then returned to his notes, “I see. I'm sorry to hear that.”

“It's Ok. At least I don't have to worry about them.”

“How about a wife or girlfriend?”

Satoshi shook his head. “I have no one.”

Resting his pencil on the table the doctor said, “How can you stand that?” he turned around, leaned against the table, and crossed his arms, “I would have a hard time being all alone like that.”

“You get used to it.”

“Is there anyone that you are interested in?”

“I am in love with someone… But that person is getting married. They were engaged at the party I was at the night of my accident.”

The doctor raised a brow, “Did you phone the person about your accident?”

“I tried, but I couldn't get through. It's Ok. Let them enjoy themselves. They were just engaged after all. And anyways, I'm going to be fine,” Satoshi waved good bye to the doctor and left.

“That must be so hard for him,” the doctor said to himself once Satoshi was far down the hall.

Once Satoshi finally arrived at his apartment, he took out his keys and opened the door. When he had walked in, he expected to return to his empty home, but was amazed to see Daisuke propped up on the couch staring agape at him. “Ni… Niwa?”

“Hikari!” Daisuke jumped off the couch, and looked like he was just about to throw himself into Satoshi's arm, but stood still. “Where were you?”

“What are you doing here?” Satoshi asked while looking at the floor. “You're not suppose to be here! You're supposed to be at Riku's mansion! Why aren't you with her…?”

“I live here, remember?” Daisuke responded.

There was an incongruous moment of silence before Satoshi turned the knob of his apartment. He turned to leave, but then Daisuke yelled, “Don't go! Hikari, I've been waiting for you to come back!”

Satoshi held the knob firmly in his fist, then said, “Why aren't you with Riku?”

“Huh?”

“Were you two not engaged just a few days ago?” Satoshi took notice of Daisuke's engagement ring. The silver metal was graciously wrapped around Daisuke's ring finger. Satoshi held back a groan. Why couldn't it have been his ring? Why couldn't Daisuke be wearing a ring that Satoshi presented to him? “Because he does not love me…”

“I came to your apartment as soon as you left. I was hoping that you would have been here, but you weren't. You have been gone for days and left no notice of where you were. You can't just go disappearing on me like that!”

“It wasn't intentional!”

Daisuke took a few steps forwards and now stood before Satoshi. “What do you mean it wasn't intentional?!”

Satoshi shook his head and held it with his hands, “Don't yell, please. I don't need this right now.”

Daisuke moved in even closer to Satoshi and placed his hand on his shoulder. “Where were you?” Daisuke asked in a soft tone. He needed Satoshi to know that he deeply cared about him.

Satoshi lifted his shirt and exposed a bandage swathed around his waist, “Hospital.”

Daisuke gaped. “What happened?!”

“Car accident,” Satoshi moved past Daisuke and then said, “I need to be alone. I think it would be best if you leave. I would not want Riku to worry.”

“I don't care about her right now!” Daisuke yelled forcefully, trying to convey the message that Satoshi was the only one that he wanted to concern himself with at the moment.

Satoshi sat down on his couch and started to massage his temples; paying no attention to what Daisuke had said. He knew very well that Daisuke did care about her. He loves her, got engaged to her, and so he must care about her. But even more than that, Satoshi cared about Daisuke. He cared about him so much that he has always been willing to put Daisuke's needs before his own. He didn't want Daisuke to marry Riku for more than just one reason. He knew that Riku was cheating on Daisuke with Saehara. He saw them after all in the park that other night a few months ago. Should he tell Daisuke? Satoshi looked up at Daisuke and then said, “Please leave,” instead. Daisuke wouldn't believe him. He loved her too much. But still… Satoshi wanted to do something.

“I'm not leaving, Hikari. I want to stay here with you.”

“Please… stop being so difficult…Why can't you just make my life easier and leave?!” Satoshi screamed in his mind. He couldn't understand why Daisuke wouldn't just leave. Didn't Daisuke hate him? Why was he still standing there before him? Why was he looking down at with concern? Why was he leaning in closer… placing his hand abruptly on Satoshi's shoulder? Satoshi winced at the sudden contact and pulled back. “Hikari…”

Satoshi looked up at Daisuke and said, “Please try to understand, Niwa, I'm sure that Riku wants you to be over there with her,” “I can't believe I'm saying this,” “Please go to her… Don't make this so difficult for me.”

Daisuke could hear the cracking in Satoshi's voice. Though his voice spoke words that told him to leave, his tone also told Daisuke that Satoshi wanted him to say. He was struggling with being this close to Daisuke and frustrated that he couldn't do anything. His conscious wouldn't allow him to. “I can't take this anymore, Niwa..,” Satoshi suddenly said, “I can't continue to be this close to you. Can't you understand? If you're not going to leave, then I will,” Satoshi stood up, “I need to get away from you…”

Daisuke reached out and took Satoshi's hand, “No! Stop it! I don't want you to go!” Satoshi yanked his hand away from Daisuke and strode off towards the door. “Please stop, Hikari!” Daisuke wrapped his arms around Satoshi and asked, “What can I do to make you stay here with me?!”

Satoshi chuckled, “What can you do to make me stay here with you? Isn't that obvious?”

Daisuke blushed. “I need you to tell me.”

“I need more than the affections I have to fight you for, but that simply isn't possibly, Niwa,” Satoshi's voice cracked and quivered. He didn't know for how much longer he was going to be able to keep this up, “I want you, Niwa,” Satoshi turned around in Daisuke's arms, “I know you know that.”

A hint of pink was obvious as Daisuke leaned into Satoshi. “I do…,” Daisuke mumbled.

“Yet you want someone who doesn't feel you are enough!” Satoshi hesitated about going on, “I saw your fiancée the other day with another man.”

Daisuke shook his head, “No, you must be joking. Riku would never cheat on me.”

“She's in a relationship with your best friend. I'm sorry, Niwa, but I don't approve of your marriage to Riku.”

Now it wasn't so much that Daisuke was upset about there being a possibility that there won't be a marriage, it was more along the lines that she had both him and another person. But, Daisuke did do `things' with Satoshi on rare occasions when the aurora was just too intense to be ignored. “You would say something like that,” but there could always be that possibility that Satoshi was lying.

“Only if it was true.”

“You just want to keep me from marrying someone else.”

It was partially true. Satoshi wanted Daisuke all to himself. He didn't want to share his little redhead. He wanted Daisuke to see only him and to belong only to him. It twisted and ripped his aching heart whenever he saw Daisuke with someone else. “I want you to find the person you really want to be with and will love you and be faithful to you.”

“You want that person to be you,” Daisuke clenched his fist.

Satoshi whispered a `yes' so softly that not even Daisuke's ears could pick it up. “Confront Ms. Harada about it,” Satoshi opened the door and waited for Daisuke to leave, “See what happens.”

Daisuke looked out into the empty halls. He pulled away from Satoshi and began to walk towards the threshold. He only got so far however before a pair of arms came around him lovingly and held him back, “Hikari?”

Satoshi kissed Daisuke's neck in such a way that Daisuke could feel the crushing, aching heart of his lover through the warmth of the kisses that were graciously placed along his neck. “Ms. Harada doesn't appreciate you as you should be. I don't ever want to see you with her….”

“But I'm just as guilty as her,” Daisuke pointed out. He was no innocent lamb, and proof rested in his womb, “I've cheated on Riku. So we've both have secrets, but I'm sure we can clear all that up as long as we love each other.”

Satoshi reached out and closed the door, “What if I won't let you go to her?”

Daisuke gasped, “I'm just as guilty as she is, Hikari! But she's not the pregnant one!”

“What if she continues to see Saehara even after you two are married?”

“I… I don't know… I'll get upset with her. I know that,” then Daisuke flipped the question, “What will happen when I am married?”

“We've discussed this, Niwa. I will step aside and raise the twins, and you will live life like I was never a part of it.”

“Will you though?” Daisuke basked in the heat that radiated off Satoshi's body.

“Unless someday you want to see the twins.”

“Then we will meet again someday?”

Satoshi had spent way too much time being fearful of the ninth month. He was going to lose Daisuke, and they had agreed upon never seeing each other again. However, now Daisuke was proposing something different? “I don't think I can bear to see you again and live,” Satoshi admitted, “These last past months have been hard enough.”

“Because I would like to see the twins someday. I should have every right to see them,” Daisuke ran his hand over his eighth month old swelled womb.

Satoshi reached over and intertwined that hand with his. He then pulled the hand over Daisuke's shoulder and ran his thumb over Daisuke's engagement ring. Daisuke could almost see the resentment in those ice blue eyes as they glared furtively at Daisuke's ring. “I had a ring for you,” Satoshi finally told Daisuke. “I decided I would give it to you and only you if you ever returned my feelings.”

Daisuke gasped. “Why didn't you tell me?”

“I couldn't bear the thought of being rejected again by you. The thought was beyond painful.”

“Is the ring special?”

“It's a Hikari artifact. Something the Niwa family would steal if ever placed in a museum.”

Satoshi pulled it out of his pocket and showed Daisuke. It was supposedly white gold with a light blue line swaying along the middle. The top of the ring was shaped like a pair of angel wings and the touch was feathery like despite its metal constituent. Daisuke took it out of Satoshi's hands and quickly noted the small cursive font inside the ring. `I love you, Daisuke,' it read. “The ring bears the name of the person I love,” Satoshi nuzzled in the crook of Daisuke's neck.

Daisuke knew already that Satoshi loved him. He has told him a few times already and obviously pain was expressed when Daisuke refused to give Satoshi a proper response. “The ring's really beautiful,” Daisuke wanted to give Satoshi back his ring, but he found it nearly impossible to let it go.

“I love you,” Satoshi turned Daisuke around and brushed his lips up against Daisuke's, “I want to be the one to marry you. I want to raise our twins together. I want to be with you.”

Daisuke closed his eyes tightly and then said softly, “What about what I want?”

“What do you want, Niwa? To be with Ms. Harada, right? To live a good, peaceful life with her?”

“You have Risa!” Daisuke finally pointed out, “You two have been dating for some time now and I haven't said much of anything! How can you think about having someone else when I am pregnant with not just mine, but your children as well?!”

“It was a set up. We were never really together. She just had this theory that she could prove that you might possibly have feelings for me, and they would show if you ever got jealous of her. But it didn't work,” Satoshi cupped Daisuke's cheeks, “There is no hope for me, isn't there?”

Daisuke lowered his eyes and Satoshi looked away with difficulty. “I need my ring back, and you need to go and see Ms. Harada.”

“Hikari….”

“Just please, Niwa.”

Daisuke hesitated at first, but then leaned into Satoshi and kissed his lips. Satoshi felt like a wave had washed over him; taking down all resistance that prevented Satoshi from claiming Daisuke like his own. He kissed Daisuke back and bit on his lower lip. Daisuke gasped and Satoshi dipped his tongue into Daisuke's mouth. From there, Satoshi took full control of the kiss and despite his hunger for Daisuke's touch he did his utmost best not to rush Daisuke into anything too heated.

A minute later and it was far too late. Daisuke had his back to the wall and his palms were up against Satoshi's. As Satoshi continuously kissed Daisuke's welcoming lips, he slowly slipped the ring around Daisuke's finger off. It soon was lose enough that if just fell off on its own. Neither Daisuke nor Satoshi heard the heavy metal as he came into contact with the floor. But Daisuke did feel the other ring safely being held between their palms as if it was meant to be given to one or the other, but it was hesitant.

Suddenly, Satoshi scooped Daisuke up into his arms and carried him to the bedroom. He set Daisuke on the bed and took Daisuke's left hand in his. The spot where the ring had been was barren once again and Satoshi smiled. “So, are you going to get married to Ms. Harada or not?”

Daisuke shook his head. The passion he felt when he was with Satoshi was far stronger than the love he has ever felt for anyone else. It was real passion. The kind only portrayed in moves, in novels, and in paintings, and rarely found in life. “I want your ring,” Daisuke pointed to the shiny object in Satoshi's hand, and Satoshi gaped. “Don't play games with me, Niwa.”

“I'm not… Satoshi.”

Daisuke extended his ring finger and Satoshi slipped it on all the while watching Daisuke's face carefully. Once all the way on, Daisuke smiled at Satoshi and admired the ring like something meaningful. “This ring fits,” Daisuke extended his arms out and pulled Satoshi as close as he could to him without crushing his womb.

Daisuke then looked at Satoshi's face, and never before had he ever seen such a face. Satoshi's eyes sparkled like the sea, and his cheeks were a tint of red. “Satoshi?”

“God, Daisuke…,” Satoshi pushed Daisuke onto his back and laid down next to him, “If you are lying to me, I swear I'll kill myself.”

Once next to each other, Satoshi kissed Daisuke again and again until Daisuke's lips were red and swollen. “I will never let you go,” Satoshi cradled Daisuke in his arms as he pulled the sheets over them and relaxed.

Once a few minutes pasted, Daisuke asked curiously, “Satoshi, can we really get married?”

Satoshi whispered, “Possibly, but it will not be recognized. I guess it'll be a very long engagement.”

A/N: NO! This is not the end! But I did have fun writing this chapter. Sorry it took so long. I had nearly forgotten where I was going with this fic, but sadly, Turquoise Bracelet is coming to and end.

“It's not fair that I have to endure this painful, pitiful love. No one's love for you is greater than mine. I will never give you up. You are all that I have.”
