Chapter 4: Execution

~!~!~!~!~!~

Light knew he was headed for execution. He had been given another complete physical, completed a psychological evaluation upon arriving at the execution facility just a week before. Strangely, it was in America.

Ryuzaki had explained that it was this way because most of the criminals Light had killed were American. He was sitting in a cell on one of the many death rows in the country, dressed in a simple orange jumpsuit, looking at his final meal. He'd been permitted to choose anything, and had asked for only a rice ball.

He had, instead, been given a full bento with a few rice balls inside. He saved them for last and now, they were all that was left. He picked one up, considering the plum pressed into the back of it. A craving for one of those, a foolish little weakness for the sweet and sour of that little plum, the comfort of the rice pressed into a familiar triangle.

A rice ball, an onigiri, was responsible for this whole damn mess. He sighed again and ate them. He was to be killed in just a few hour's time. He was ready.

He was ushered into the room, the table stark, standing out in the center, restraints open and waiting. He closed his eyes for a long moment, steeled himself, and did as he was told. The restraints closed over his limbs, his body. The IV was put in and he felt the coldness of saline clearing his veins to make room for the poison that would end his life.

It was as if the world was shrouded in mist. He couldn't think clearly, wasn't truly aware of what was going on around him. When he was properly restrained, the needle firmly embedded in his arm, he was left alone in the room. It was some time later before a voice, seemingly disembodied, addressed him.

"Kira. Do you have any last words?" It was L. Ryuzaki. Hideki Ryuga.

"Yes," he paused, putting his thoughts in order before he spoke again. "I am Kira. I am no longer able to bring Justice to this world. I leave that to L, who is as of yet untainted."

There was a moment of silence, then L's voice again. "We will begin."

Light turned his head, looking at the mirror. He knew there were people on the other side. Judge, jury, executioners. L, the task force, and probably some American officials. When he heard the mechanical sound of another substance being pumped into his bloodstream, he swallowed heavily.

His vision swam within seconds, his gaze becoming foggy as he took as deep of a breath as he could manage. He curled his fingers, but his body only twitched in response. When he closed his eyes, a tear slid from one. Not even he understood the grief that, in his last seconds, consumed him.

Perhaps that was what remorse felt like. It was his last thought before the world faded from him.

That day, the entire world erupted in celebration. Kira was dead. Justice, true justice, had been served. Light's last words were printed in every language in use. The recording, with his voice masked to protect his family, was played over televisions and radios around the world, with anchors spouting the translations.

Kira was dead. L was Justice. Even Kira had said so.

Everything was right in the world, if only for a few short hours.
