Chapter 5: Resurrection

Beep. Beep. Beep.

A headache slithered into his consciousness like an eel. There was weight, so much of it on top of him, beneath him. He was warm, but he shivered.

A voice, maybe two. Somewhere in the distance.

Grit on his face, the tang of blood, his breath hitched.

Weight. Pressing, pushing, grinding. Cold, wet grit on his face. Pressed down. Suffocating him.

There was a moan somewhere close by. "No."

Restraints, on his wrists, ankles. His body bowed upwards in a feeble struggle. His eyes remained closed and that beep, beep, beeping sped up. Became frantic.

"No!"

Breath was coming now, deep and fast. Strength was still hiding, somewhere within his body, but he drew on it. Drew on it anyway, struggled with it. Cried out.

There were hands on him. He couldn't focus, couldn't count them, but there were hands. Someone was screaming. He was pulling, pushing, kicking, punching but the restraints only dug into his flesh. Soft and firm, without leaving a mark, they kept him in place.

His arm was suddenly cold as ice and something slithered into his veins. The strength slid from him, but the fear, the terror didn't. He was left trembling, gasping, his limbs twitching with his remaining strength against the restraints. The blankets were returned to proper order and a voice, achingly familiar, cut through the fear and the fog.

"Yagami-kun, you are safe here."

"Ryuzaki," he whispered the name, realized that his eyes were closed and managed to open them, to let them focus on the man that had, supposedly, sent him to his death.

"Yes, Yagami-kun. You have my word that you are safe here," he said it plainly enough, standing at the side of the infirmary bed.

"Was it... all a dream?" he couldn't wrap his mind around that, much as he would have liked.

"No. You were put to death six hours, fifteen minutes and twenty-three seconds ago," he moved to a chair, crouched into that familiar position and gazed at Light with unblinking eyes. "To put it more accurately, Kira was put to death. Yagami-kun is still alive, but Kira is not."

It took a long moment for Light to process that. He wasn't dead... "You said you would make sure I got the death penalty if I was caught," he accused.

"Kira received the death penalty when Yagami-kun was raped. I saw no reason to have Yagami-kun put to death as well," Ryuzaki put his thumb to his lips, gnawed on it for a moment.

At the mention of his rape, Light looked away sharply. "I suppose that's true enough," he muttered softly.

"I would advise Yagami-kun to speak with a therapist about the rape. It is, however, Yagami-kun's decision," Ryuzaki said, his gaze wandering the room. "You will be traveling with me, Yagami-kun, and will remain under my supervision for the duration of your life."

There was a long silence. "Everyone believes I am dead."

"It is necessary, Yagami-kun, that no one else knows you are alive," Ryuzaki agreed. "Those who are overseeing your medical care do not know who you are. To them, you are simply J."

"J?" Light turned his gaze back to the detective.

"You are no longer Kira, so K would not be appropriate. L, M and N are already taken, R and Y are to distant in the alphabet. You, Yagami-kun, are now J," Ryuzaki explained.

The implications left Light silent for a moment. "Any particular meaning?"

"Justice, of course. You have been humbled, Yagami-kun. You are now fit to serve Justice," Ryuzaki gave that impish smile of his behind his thumb. "If, that is, you wish to work with me."

"Work with you," Light almost laughed, his gaze turning to the far wall. "After trying for so long to kill you, after nearly succeeding, you want me to work with you."

"Yagami-kun is my only friend. He is also the only person I have met who is able to match my intellect," Ryuzaki replied simply. Or exceed it, he thought to himself. Light, however, was a narcissist and it was best not to feed his ego too much.

"And the alternative?" Light knew would not be preferable, but he asked anyway.

"Permanent solitary confinement," Ryuzaki didn't skip a beat.

"Then why are you even asking?"

"Yagami-kun has been traumatized by rape. Perhaps you would not wish for any human contact at all," he shrugged his slumped shoulders.

Light found himself wondering if Ryuzaki was aware of his kyphosis. "I would prefer the company of people to that of concrete walls," he replied simply. Even if Ryuzaki was the only company he would have. Even so, he had to admit that Ryuzaki had been his first real, genuine friend, if only while he was lacking his memories.

"Then it will be arranged, Yagami-kun. I would advise you to choose a pseudonym, for use in the event that we must work closely with a task force as I did on the Kira case," Ryuzaki advised. "We will be changing locations later tonight. Rest well, Yagami-kun. You will be permitted a short shower in lukewarm water before we leave."

Light gave a flat glare at the detective, but said nothing. He understood. He probably would have used scalding hot water and scrubbed his skin raw -- again -- if he were allowed to shower as he liked. He sighed as Ryuzaki retreated from the room and turned his attention to the wall, drifting in thought like a ship lost at sea.

Kira was dead and yet, Yagami Light, J, had survived.

He scowled as Ryuk's laughter echoed in the room and the shinigami entered, perching on the footboard of Light's bed. "Hyuk, hyuk. Looks like you were tricked again, Light."

He cast a mild glare at Ryuk. "What do you want? I haven't got any apples."

"I came to see how far the mighty Kira has fallen," he grinned, giving that dry, cough-like laugh again. "You should think about giving up ownership of my notebook soon. I might get impatient."

"I'm not afraid of death," Light spat.

"Hyuk, hyuk, hyuk! Is that so? That's not what your eyes said when you were being 'executed'," Ryuk left then, flying right through a wall and leaving Light alone with his thoughts.

The day dragged by slowly, but there was a television in the room and at six pm local time, it was turned on and set to a news channel. Light wasn't entirely sure if he liked that. The main story was the celebration of Kira's capture and execution. People were finally free to condemn him and they did, with colorful language and sound logic.

Two hours later, the television was turned off and Ryuzaki shuffled into the room, a tray of sweets waiting for him on a table. He climbed into a chair and settled himself, taking a moment to savor a few strawberries before he spoke.

"Yagami-kun, have you decided upon a pseudonym?"

There was a soft snort. "Hikaru."

"That's not very creative, Yagami-kun," Ryuzaki replied easily. "Perhaps Hajime or Michio would be better."

"Toshio, then," Light replied with a frown.

"That is acceptable," Ryuzaki replied, putting another strawberry into his mouth. The room was quiet for a few minutes, interrupted only by the sounds of Ryuzaki eating. "The world is celebrating Kira's death."

"I am aware," Light replied curtly. "You made sure I would be aware."

"I made sure that you understood the world did not think of you so highly as you, as Kira, had believed," Ryuzaki corrected. "They were frightened into such flattery. Now the world's true feelings about Kira have been revealed."

"What's your point, Ryuzaki?" Light demanded.

"My point, Toshio-kun, is that Kira is dead and the world is better off without him. I have also had something come to my attention. The man who raped you has been captured by the Japanese police force. Do you wish to add rape to his charges?"

"In case you didn't notice, Ryuzaki, the world believes I was put to death today," Light snapped.

"Mmm, that is not a problem, Toshio-kun. All I have to do is tell them that I collected the rape kit prior to your death and present them with the medical reports," Ryuzaki shrugged.

Light gave a deep sigh. "You may present the evidence if you allow me to see the case files. I want to know who did this to me, and I want to know just how much he's paying for it."

"That will be arranged," Ryuzaki agreed, dropping six sugar cubes into a cup of tea and stirring with his spoon. "How does Toshio-kun feel?"

"Irritated."

"That is to be expected. I was referring, however, to your physical state," Ryuzaki clarified.

"I feel fine," Light replied, sighing softly. "I'm still... sore and bruised, but I'm fine."

"Was Toshio-kun speaking of his body or his pride?" Ryuzaki allowed himself to smirk as he sipped the tea. There were granules of sugar in the bottom, just begging to be eaten.

Light only glared. "You said we were leaving tonight. Under what conditions will I be transported?"

"The same as previously. You will be unconscious until we are airborne, at which point you will only be restrained until such a time as you have earned sufficient trust," Ryuzaki reached the bottom of his teacup, let the moist sugar drip onto his tongue.

Light snorted. "As if that will ever happen," he muttered, turning his gaze away.

"There is a five percent probability that I will trust Toshio-kun within one year. However, the outlook for ten years has a seventy-eight point nine percent probability. Twenty years has a ninety-nine point eight," Ryuzaki took a spoon to a piece of cake, put it into his mouth.

"Assuming I behave in a trustworthy manor," Light supplied, "and do not gain access to a Death Note."

"Yes," Ryuzaki agreed. They fell into silence then, Light considering his life and Ryuzaki enjoying his sweets.

Two hours later, Watari came in and injected a mild tranquilizer into Light's bloodstream. The fog that pulled him down into unconsciousness was welcome. Sedatives had a very pleasant side effect of preventing his nightmares. It also prevented him from having a panic attack when he awoke.

The grogginess faded slowly when Light awoke on the plane. He tried to reach up, wipe at his eyes, but it did him no good. His wrists were bound to the arm rests, though the rest of him was free to move as he liked. He shifted, stretching his legs out and yawning.

"Good evening, Toshio-kun," Ryuzaki said softly, flipping the page in a book he was reading.

"Is it really necessary to call me Toshio?" Light frowned.

"You must respond naturally to the pseudonym, Toshio-kun, otherwise people will know it is a pseudonym," Ryuzaki reasoned.

"If we work with law enforcement officials, they ought to assume as much. You're L. You've never given out your real name. Why would they expect me to be any different?" Light replied with a shake of his head.

"Very well, Yagami-kun," Ryuzaki turned the page in his book. "When you have been introduced to your new living quarters, I will give you the paperwork gathered thus far on the rapist. We do not currently have a case, but it shouldn't be a long wait."

"I don't suppose you'll tell me where we're going," Light replied.

"You suppose correctly, Yagami-kun. If you wish to use the restroom to freshen up, Watari will accompany you," he flipped the page again.

Light grunted softly. "That would be appreciated."

Watari came back then, into the cabin of the small jet and released Light's restraints. "This way, please," he gestured towards the back of the plane and followed Light to the restroom. He turned his back when Light urinated and watched patiently as he groomed himself afterwards.

A few moments later, Light returned to his seat, sighing quietly when the restraints were fastened once more. He felt... better, after that. He turned his gaze to the windows. There was an ocean of clouds below, and it was all he could see, but even so, it was beautiful.

"Dying is an... interesting experience," Light said after more than an hour of silence.

"Oh?" Ryuzaki glanced up from his book. He was more than halfway through.

Light gave a hum of agreement. "It made me realize how far I had fallen. I was... pleased that I met it with dignity."

"You said yourself that Kira was already dead -- or nearly so -- before the execution," Ryuzaki shrugged.

"Yes, but it wasn't just Kira that was facing death," Light replied.

"You, Yagami-kun, had been raped. It did not simply effect the part of you that is or was Kira. Rape effects the entirety of a person." Ryuzaki flipped a page in his book. "Tell me about the rape, Yagami-kun. It will help you heal."

"I'm not ready," Light almost whispered it, looking out at the clouds, the occasional glimpse of blue ocean beneath. "Not yet."

"Then when you are ready," Ryuzaki replied.

Light didn't think he would be speaking about it any time soon. If ever.
