All you wanted…

Chapter 6: Words unsung

The next few days went by a lot faster than the previous one. Takeru and Hikari spent their detentions together, though in silence, but at least together. One would have slit their wrists by now if they had to endure the hourly sessions alone. The punishment was bad enough, and the silence, but they weren't even allowed to sleep off the hour. The teacher had strict rules.

Naturally, there had to be an explanation to all the late homecomings. Takeru had explained to his mother that he had decided to join the newspaper and they had emergency meetings every so often. His mother bought it; naturally proud that her youngest had decided to take on a similar interest as herself.

Hikari explained to her parents that she was receiving math help from a friend. Her parents didn't think twice. Then again, 4:30 wasn't late at all. Her brother, Taichi, was another story. He didn't buy it the slightest bit, but he kept his mouth shut. He knew about the broken window and the detention, but he also knew that she had company. Not just anyone, but Takeru; possibly the only person that Taichi approved for his little sister. He'd often tease the two of them mercilessly in the past, but recently Hikari had surprised him by choosing another. He did not approve of this other boy at all and made it openly known to everyone but Hikari. She would come home sometimes with tears in her eyes; tears that her boyfriend caused, but the story was always the same. He'd call her later that night with some faulty excuse and she would take him back. She just seemed so happy at times and in Taichi's mind, that dick must be doing something right no matter how much he hated him. He vented his anger mostly with Hikari's digimon partner, Tailmon, for she was the only one living with them who hated that Tomoko boy just as much.

All was well that she was in detention, Taichi would think. At least she spends less time with that boyfriend of hers. And, that put a smile on his face.

As for their digimon partners, it was only appropriate for the two to tell them the truth. Frankly, the two didn't quite grasp the concept of detention and just nodded after being explained. Patamon just knew for sure that it was a serious issue for Takeru had made a different excuse for his mother. He'd also made Patamon swear that he wouldn't breathe a word about it when his mother was home.

Time had finally slipped through and before Takeru and Hikari knew it, their time had been served. But for Takeru, time had slid a little too quickly. He enjoyed everyday that he spent with Hikari alone; somewhat alone. He'd take those opportunities to steal glances at her finding more reasons why he loved her. She was somewhat oblivious to this until catching him staring at her for a prolonged period of time. She blushed madly at that instance and still he didn't shift his gaze (he too could be oblivious of his behavior at times).

He wasn't alone at these newly found revelations himself. Hikari would, at times, catch him at the right angle and gaze at him from time to time. For instance, he was immersed in yet another book and Hikari only meant to glance at the title, but instead found herself staring at his concentrated features. His strong jaw line tensed once in a while every time he'd swallow. The way his brow would furrow at times and eyes squint. The way he'd occasionally lick his lips every time he'd turn a page; she'd only notice these little things now. All these things and more connected together to give her a startling revelation: he was all grown up and she could just as easily have fallen for him. If only…

She shook those thoughts away quickly when he'd find her staring at him. He smiled every time and she'd smile back. But those were the times that she'd see him as she'd always seen him before. That smile was a remembrance of the eight year old Takeru and the eleven year old Takeru; her best friend, only.

But the time did fly by and they had found themselves packing their bags together for the last time in that detention room.

"Finally, huh?" Hikari breathed smiling at Takeru.

Takeru tried hard to smile back. He settled for nodding instead of any words. He just didn't want this to end just yet. He had just spent the past five days with Hikari all to himself and he knew that tomorrow, she'd be back with, what's-his-name.

'So, he's going to pick you up this time?" Takeru hid his face as he slowly packed his bag. He didn't know why he asked. He already knew the answer, as it was always the same every other day. She'd bite her bottom lip and shake her head. Then he'd, just like every other day, offer to walk home with her. She would hesitate, but in the end give in to the charms of her best friend and gradually accept.

And, like on cue, Hikari bit her lip and shook her head. "No…"

Takeru wondered what excuse he'd made this time and what excuse she'd use to defend him. Yesterday, apparently, Tomoko just couldn't break a previous engagement with an old friend -drinking- and Hikari defended this by saying, "His friend is from out of town. I don't want to hold him back just for me."

"Why not?" Takeru pressed on. He wanted her to see what a neglecting person her boyfriend was.

"His friend is still in town, but he's leaving tomorrow. He promised we'd have the entire weekend together." Her smile was somewhat melancholy.

It seemed as if it was only Hikari making all the sacrifices for their relationship. He wondered why she even kept clinging on to this silly charade. It was apparent -to him and everyone else except Hikari- that Tomoko didn't love her at all.

"Oh, sounds great." Takeru swallowed hard. His prediction was right, but he left it as that. Both walked out the door together. Taking one last look at the room, Takeru sighed, turned off the lights and shut the door locked.

~*~*~

On their way to Hikari's apartment, Takeru couldn't help but notice as the days started to faintly become darker. The two of them were looking at opposite directions letting the silence overtake a conversation.

"Takeru…" Hikari decided to end the silence.

"Mm-hm?" Takeru answered still looking at the opposite end of the street.

"Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure." He nodded as he tilted his head down to look at her.

"What do you think about Tomoko?" She asked a little casually.

By far, that was not a casual question for Takeru to answer. He didn't want to answer that question for obvious reasons. But he had no choice; he didn't want to be totally honest because he knew there would be a definite chance that every other word would turn out to be an insult, but he didn't want to lie to Hikari either.

"He's something else…" He tried to keep the tone of his voice from trailing into bitterness.

"You don't like him." She said blatantly.

Takeru swallowed hard. He wasn't sure how to go about this in a proper manner. He circled for possible answers in his head and settled for the first one that popped in.

"I just want you to be happy…" He reluctantly sighed.

Hikari looked at him with slight shock.

"That's all that I care about, and if you're happy with him…then that's all that matters." He felt that this was the chance he was waiting for. The tear in that relationship that he should take advantage of.

"Oh…" Hikari couldn't help but blush a little.

"Hikari, you deserve nothing less." He didn't even notice, but they had both stopped walking midway from her place. "Does he truly make you happy?" He narrowed his eyes.

She was a bit taken a back by this. She wasn't even sure what to say. It didn't feel right to her that she actually had to question her own happiness, let alone having her best friend question it for her. She blinked a little. "….Of course…I am." She managed to choke out.

"Hikari, you're questioning yourself. Please, you don't have to lie to me." Takeru pleaded.

His eyes; those same blue eyes that were narrowed at her somehow changed and she was lost for a second. That same attraction that she thought had been lost four days again re-emerged and she could feel a mountain of butterflies ready to escape her stomach if she wasn't careful. They filled her chest and she found it uncontrollable to breathe almost.

"I…I…" She tried hard to conjunct a proper answer.

"Why Hikari? Then why are you with him if it doesn't bring you happiness?" He exclaimed. "He doesn't deserve to be you! You deserve so much better! You shouldn't even be with him then!!"

The butterfly feeling had flown away at this point and Takeru was Takeru again. That feeling was washed away by anger. Who was he to tell her otherwise? Who was he to tell her who she could date? And who was he to tell her how she felt?

"He loves me, Takeru!" She yelled out in anger. "He loves me…"

Takeru was certainly taken back by this. His blood began to boil again. "No he doesn't! If he loves you, where is he?!" He yelled back in uncontrollable rage. He had to make her see… "Where was he yesterday?! The day before?! And the day before that?! Why is he making up all these excuses not to be with you?! Why does he put himself before you?!?!" He continued in a blind rage.

Hikari was now at the verge of tears. This wasn't the same Takeru that she'd known since she was eight. She didn't feel like she knew this one at all. This Takeru was frightening.

"Please, stop…" she whispered in between muffled sobs.

It was only now that Takeru realized the nature of his words. His face softened and he quickly shut his mouth before it opened to say something stupid again.

"Hikari, I'm sorry." He regretfully took a step back. Hikari just stood there shaking slightly. He knew he'd crossed the line at this point and made her cry. He'd never meant for this to happen and this was the first time that he'd actually caused this. He was so disgusted at himself that he wanted to hurt himself.

A single solitary tear rolled down her eye. This was like a wound that had been sliced open for her. She'd thought about what he said before, but she'd always dismiss it. It took her best friend yelling them at her to thoroughly examine those questions. So she started to cry; partially because she felt as if her best friend had abandoned her and this new intimidating persona had replaced him, but for the most part because she knew it was the truth no matter how much she wanted to deny it.

Takeru was at a loss for words. For the first time, he'd made her cry. He was shaking too. He'd never lost his temper at her before and here she was bawling uncontrollably. He wanted to just hug her and make those tears go away, just like so many times before but this time it was different. He had been the one who caused this. He was that boy that made her cry.

"I…" he took a bold step forward only to see her take a step back.

She's afraid of me… he thought, horrified at himself.

"Hikari…" He pleaded taking another step forward extending his hand to touch her.

She only took another step back, "Don't!" She screamed at him. "Don't touch me!" She demanded.

His eyes were a clear mirror of utter shock and he stood still at his place with his mouth slightly agape. "I…I'm not going to hurt you…" He said carefully.

"Please, just leave me alone!" She choked out between sobs. She took another few steps backwards.

"I…I just want to talk to you, please!" He begged. He didn't want to end the day like this.

"Just leave…" She began.

"No! Hikari, I'm sorry if I yelled at you, and I'm sorry if I scared you. I had no intentions to and I don't have any intentions to do that ever again. Please, don't be afraid of me." Takeru sounded so desperate in his plea that his words came out in almost a choke. He tried hard to keep himself from crying. "I'm sorry if my words hurt you, but you asked me and I gave you a straight answer! Just…don't…don't look at me like that…" his voice cracking with every word.

Hikari blinked her eyes for a second. What she saw disturbed her; she'd never seen Takeru like this before. His beautiful blue eyes reflecting desperation fighting off what she knew would be tears soon enough. He was shaking in fear and breathing hard. Seeing him like this frightened her more than seeing him angry.

"I…" Takeru started, but was hushed by Hikari who shook her head. She knew what he was going to say. He was going to tell her he loved her and she wasn't going to know how to respond. She was so torn about this whole love business already that she wouldn't have a straight answer. She knew that that would completely break him with her silence, and if anything, he was the last thing she'd want to lose. But, she was also not completely over Tomoko, even when she knew that she should be. She was so confused.

Truth was though, she did love Takeru more. She knew it too, but she didn't want to risk their friendship. It was too precious to her and the last thing she wanted was to lose him completely.

To save our friendship… she thought sadly. You are the only thing in this world that I never want to lose Takeru. Please don't do this…

"Don't…" Hikari whispered softly, hushing him with her finger.

"Hikari, I don't understand…" He choked out.

"Please, just don't say anything." She sobbed. "I have to go. I'm sorry too." Her voice not holding together as she ran away.

"Hikari! Don't do this…!" Takeru hollered, pleading for her to stay. "Hikari!!" He yelled again, "…I love you…" he whispered this as he could feel his tears sliding down his face.

Anger slowly enveloped him as he threw his bag to the ground. Feeling the need to vent the anger, he struck the side of the brick building beside him with his fist causing a few small pieces of debris to crumple. Normally, a punch like that would hurt like hell, but he couldn't even feel it. He couldn't even feel the sting of the opening wounds that came with the punch. "Dammit!!" he roared punching the wall again, this time a trace of blood smearing the wall. "Dammit…" he collapsed on the side of the wall crouching slowly to his knees shamelessly.

to be continued…
