All you wanted…

Chapter 5: Detention

Takeru finished off the rest of his classes in English; the same classroom where the detention room was held.

He stayed in his seat while the rest of his class had rapidly rushed out the door. Daisuke on the other hand tapped him on the shoulder from behind.

"Hey, are you sure about this? I mean I'll talk to Mr. Fujikawa and get you out of this mess. I mean, it was all my fault." He held his bag sternly and looked at Takeru with pure guilt.

"Hey, I told you not to worry about it. You did me a favour." Takeru smiled and stuck out his thumb indicating gratitude.

Daisuke gave him a quirky look and shrugged. "If you say so… you know what you're doing." Both boys slapped hands and finished with a sort of handshake before Daisuke left the room.

Now it was only Takeru in the room. He packed away all his binders and took out a book to read for the next hour.

His math teacher entered the room and placed his briefcase on the teachers' table.

"Takeru." He gestured and took a seat behind the table.

Takeru nodded gesturing back to his teacher.

"You know I take no pleasure in this myself." Mr. Fujikawa stated as he rummaged through his briefcase. "Now remember, this is a detention hall, I don't want a sound from you."

Takeru took a look around at the empty room with a peculiar look on his face. "Hai, sensai." He nodded slowly.

Footsteps could be heard from outside the halls and through the doorframe the principal's head poked in. He motioned for Mr. Fujikawa to come outside and engaged into a short conversation. Of course Takeru knew why for. He was starting to feel somewhat excited at this point. He smiled to himself as he read through the same passage of his book.

His teacher came back inside the room with the principal and announced, "Okay, you've got company and that's not an open invitation to start talking."

Takeru nodded lifting is eyes from the book.

Hikari then stepped inside the classroom at the instruction of the principal. Needless to say, her eyes went momentary wide when she saw Takeru slumped back in his seat with a wide grin on his face.

"Please take a seat Miss Yagami." The teacher instructed. She took a seat next to Takeru who invited her in with a warm smile and quickly re-immersed himself in his book, signalling for her to act busy.

"I wouldn't normally set you two together, but so long as you do not make a sound, I'll allow it." Mr. Fujikawa warned. He took his own seat behind the teachers' table and took out a pile of papers from his briefcase as the principal left the room.

Peeking from the pages of his book, Takeru hid half his face from the teacher's view. "Surprise." He whispered to Hikari.

"What are you doing here?" she whispered back trying to cover her own mouth while taking out her binder.

"Serving my time." He whispered back slightly slouching deeper into his seat.

"But why are you here?" She was careful not to be too loud.

"Miss Yagami…" Mr. Fujikawa interrupted. Hikari froze. She suspected she'd been caught for talking and grimaced. "…I expected better from you…" he shook his head in disappointment.

"Gomen, sensai. I was…"

"No excuses, I want better results on the next test." He frowned looking at her paper.

"Oh..." She thought she'd been caught but this little warning wasn't any better. She frowned herself.

"Now, this is a surprise!" he exclaimed taking off his spectacles. "Mr. Motimya with a near perfect paper." He held the paper from afar admiring the first good paper he had marked. "No wonder you took quite a liking to his paper." Mr. Fujikawa eyed Takeru who momentarily took his eyes away from his book.

Discreet as always… Takeru thought dryly.

Hikari looked at Takeru with shocked eyes, but Takeru kept glued to his book occasionally glancing back at Hikari.

::Mr. Fujikawa?:: the secretary's voice echoed from the PA system.

"Yes?" He answered back.

::You have a call line one::

He perked up his ears. "I'll take it." He looked at the two sitting at the back of the class. "Now, this isn't an open invitation to start a conversation. I want this room as quiet when I return." He ordered and left the room in a hurry.

Hikari took this as an opportunity for an interrogation. Why would Takeru result to cheating? That was so unlike him. He lived by his morals and was practically the model of the perfect guy.

"You cheated?" were the first words that came out of her mouth.

"Hello to you too." He put his book face down.

"And not only that, but at Daisuke's paper?! That is so not like you. What's going on Takeru?" She had a solemn look to her face.

"I didn't cheat." He said simply. He didn't want to give Daisuke away.

"So why are you here?" She demanded.

"Because he thought I did."

"Did you tell him?" She asked.

"Yeah, but he doesn't believe me."

"But that's not fair. If you're innocent, you shouldn't have to be here." She exclaimed. She wasn't even aware of the furious tone that her voice gave away. She also wasn't aware of the meaning of her words and what those words were doing to Takeru.

That nearly pierced a dagger through him. She didn't want him to be there with her?

She doesn't even want me around…? His mouth was agape in a dejected manner. He blinked it away and returned to the pages of his book with blank anger.

Realising what she had just done, she quickly gave him an apologetic look. "I didn't mean like that…"

But it was too late. Takeru refused to even look at her; he simply nodded.

"Takeru, don't be like this…what happened to you?" She asked placing a hand on his forearm.

"I already told you." He said coldly looking her in the eye.

Hikari was a little taken a back by his gaze. Never had she seen him like this before. It scared her, yet she couldn't help but find a sort of attraction to his piercing blue eyes. She let go of his arm slowly and looked away. She felt ridiculous being afraid of her best friend, but she wondered what had possessed him to act so strangely all of a sudden. That was what scared her the most; his rapid alteration the last couple of days. She had noticed that he'd been more quiet than usual and kept more to himself.

She refrained from asking anymore questions aware that she was treading on a rather touchy subject. His mood had made a radical change suddenly and she dared not push it any further, so she remained quiet the remainder of the hour.

Takeru, though, took this to heart. He had totally misread this as a sign of annoyance at him and he mentally hit himself for acting the way he did. Now you've done it smart-ass. You practically pushed her off a cliff. He thought bitterly as he tried to make sense of his book. He had to do something for the remainder of the hour.

Monday……..4:14pm

Tick, tick, tick, click…4:15pm

"Alright you two," the teacher took his eyes off his papers and faced the clock, "you're free to go." He now faced Takeru and Hikari who were in their own world. Hikari positioned her head towards the window and seemed to look lost in concentration and Takeru who was completely slumped back in his seat approaching the half mark of the novel.

"You two may want to spend more time in school, but I have other things to do." Mr. Fujikawa exclaimed trying to get their attention.

Takeru looked up from his book and Hikari snapped out of her little day-dream.

"Gomen." They both said in unison causing both of them to momentarily glance at each other.

"So, if you would please gather your belongings. I'll see you tomorrow same time, same place." Mr. Fujikawa noted and left the room, briefcase in hand.

Hikari kept silent the entire time refusing to look at Takeru. Even when packing her bag, she kept her back to him which was rather unsettling to him. He paused momentarily while putting his bag over his shoulder.

"Hikari." He spoke silently careful not to scare her.

She ignored him.

"Hikari, can we talk for a minute." He pleaded as he followed her rapid lead out the door.

"There's nothing to talk about Takeru." She didn't bother to look at him as she tried to quicken her pace. But he wasn't about to give up.

"Why are you mad at me?" He called from behind.

"You're the one who's mad at me!" She retorted turning fully around; her arms widespread.

"No, you're the one who refused to talk to me the entire hour!" He shot back.

"You..! ARGH!" Her face was flushed and body exasperated, she continued walking rapidly towards her locker.

Takeru understood the stupidity of his choice of words; closed his eyes and mentally hurt himself again. "Hikari, come back!" He pleaded and made a brief jog to catch up with her.

Reaching her locker, she quickly emptied some of the contents of her bag purposely shoving textbooks in making a satisfying banging sound.

"Please, Hikari…" Takeru leaned at the locker next to hers.

**SLAM**

She slammed the locker hard. She took a moment to glare at him then walk away.

"Hikari, I'm sorry." He implored.

She stopped briefly.

"Is that what you wanted to hear?" He asked impatiently. Frankly wondering what had made her so upset in the first place. Why was it always him always having to apologize? He was the one who always had to clean up the mess and he was so sick of being the understanding one, the one who always had to see it their way. Why -for once- couldn't she see it his way? For once. He thought about that momentarily, but his answer was answered for him the moment she turned around.

That's right…his face softening into a small smile …because I love her…

"Yes." She whispered barely audible. "I'm sorry too."

She couldn't even remember why she had a fight with him in the first place. They had been best friends for so long, and that was the first time that she had felt so distant from him; and it scared her to pieces.

Takeru breathed out silently and held his arms out. "Come here." He issued as he pulled her into a tight embrace. She didn't object in the slightest and held him just as tight, squeezing his torso.

"Sometimes you can scare me, Takeru." She sobbed on his green blazer.

Takeru laughed inwardly at the irony of it all. You scare me all the time… he thought.

"I don't even remember why we were fighting in the first place." She tugged at his blazer looking up with a slight smile on her face.

"Me too." He sighed looking back at her reluctantly letting her go. "C'mon, let's get out of here. I've spent far too much time in this school for my liking." He joked trying to lighten the mood. "I'll walk you home."

Hikari nodded and accepted the arm that he offered.
