Digidestined's Day Off

Warning: I do not in anyway would like to glamorise the idea of (ditching, bunking, playing hooky/truant or whatever you call it) taking a day off from school. I cannot be held responsible if you decide to do it and are caught. You do this at your own risk. Sorry, but this had to be said. Anyway, on with the story.

The Night Before

(We join the Digidestined on a Sunday night at Tai's apartment enjoying a movie together. Tai, Matt, Joe, Izzy, Mimi, Sora, TK and Kari are present. The movie has just ended and the credits are on the screen)

Tai: What a movie!

Matt: That was awesome!

TK: You said it bro.

Mimi: Matthew Broderick is so dreaming.

Sora: I totally agree with you Mimi.

(Both Sora and Mimi faint)

Kari (Thinks to herself): I wonder if I will act like that when I'm older?

Joe: Personally, I found that movie unacceptable, unrealistic and besides, it has a very negative message for teenagers.

(Sora and Mimi jump up)

Mimi and Sora: WHAT!?!

Tai: What do you mean? Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the best movie I've ever seen!

Matt: Me too!

Izzy: I have to agree with Tai and Matt.

TK: I also agree with Tai, Izzy and Matt. So does Kari.

Kari: It's true. I liked that movie.

Mimi: And Sora and me agree with them.

(Sora nods approvingly)

Tai: Yeah, what could have been so terrible about it anyway?

(Everyone stares at Joe waiting for an answer. Finally Joe gathers up enough courage and speaks)

Joe (Nervously): Well… you see… they took an unnecessary risk and endangered their educational prospects.

Matt: So? It was just a movie Joe.

Joe: I know… but it gave off a negative message.

Mimi: What message?

Joe: That it is okay to take a day off school. I mean what if it influences someone else to do the same.

Tai: Like who?

Joe: Like… like… (He searches his brain for an answer but feeling pressured he blurts out the first thing that comes to his mind) US!

All: US!?!

(There is complete silence as everyone thinks about what Joe said. Tai is the first to break the silence)

Tai: That's a great idea!

All: What!?!

Tai: We should have a day off ourselves.

Kari: Are you sure about that Tai?

Tai: Of course I'm sure!

Joe: Wait! No! That's not what I meant!

(But it's too late, everyone is excited about the idea)

Joe (Upset): Oh no! What have I done!

Tai: All those for it say YEAH!

All except Joe: YEAH!!!

Tai: All those against it say NAY.

Joe: NAY!!!

Matt: Sorry Joe. It looks like you have been out voted.

Izzy: Come on Joe, live a little.

(Joe groans)

Mimi: When are we going to have this like, day off exactly?

Sora: Yeah. When?

Tai: Mmmmm. How about tomorrow.

All: TOMORROW!?!

Tai: Sure, we can spend the day here at my place. It's foolproof. Our parents are away this week. Right Kari?

Kari: Well… yes.

Tai: Also, we all have that school outing tomorrow to that power plant on the outskirts of the city so will won't miss any school work. How does that sound to you Joe?

Joe: I still have a bad feeling about this. What about the absent letter we must give the next day? We can't just go AWOL you know. What about that Tai?

Tai: No problem. Izzy will you please explain it to Joe.

Izzy: Certainly! You see Joe, with my trusty laptop I can type and print out sick notes for us to hand in the next day and no-one would be the wiser.

Sora: Wow, Izzy you really seem to have this well planned out.

Izzy: Elementary my dear Sora. Always come prepared. That's my motto.

Joe: I thought that was my motto.

Matt: Agree to ditch school with us and you can have your motto back. So, are you with us?

Tai: Yeah Joe, are you with us?

Izzy: Join us, it'll be fun.

Sora: You got nothing to lose.

TK & Kari: PLEASE JOE!!!

Mimi: Yes Joe, please ditch school and spend the day with us. PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE!

(Mimi makes puppy dog eyes at Joe, who within seconds breaks down)

JOE: Okay! Okay! Okay! I'll join you!

Mimi (Punches the air triumphantly): Yeah! Girl power!

Joe (Thinks to himself): How can I say no to Mimi? I must have a crush on her.

TK: Yeah! No school for us tomorrow.

(TK gives Kari a high five)

Kari: This is going to be great!

(Everyone begins to talk about their plans for the next day, except for Joe who is standing alone muttering to himself)

Joe: Now I know that I'm going to regret this.

The Next Day

(The plan was set. The Digidestined will meet at Tai's place and that includes a very reluctant Joe. Anyway on with the story. We join Tai and Kari in their living room waiting for the others to arrive. The doorbell rings)

Ding-Dong.

Tai: Okay, I'm coming.

(Tai opens the door and Sora is there)

Sora: Hi Tai. Am I too early?

Tai: Oh hi Sora. Nope. Come inside we can talk while we wait for the others.

Sora: Sure.

(They walk into the living room, Kari is sitting in front of the TV)

Kari: Hello Sora.

Sora: Hi there Kari. Are you excited about today?

Kari: I sure am.

(The three of them sit together on the couch watching TV)

Sora: This is the first time we've ever ditched school together.

Tai: Don't worry about it. There's a first time for everything.

(Just then, the doorbell rings again)

Ding-Dong

(Tai answers the door and Matt and TK are there)

Matt and TK: Hi Tai.

Tai: Hi guys.

Matt: So are we the first to arrive?

Tai: No. Sora is here already. Come in and watch some TV with us while we wait for Izzy, Mimi and Joe to arrive.

Matt and TK: Okay.

(They both walk in)

TK: KARI!

Kari: TK!

TK: Great to see you again after so long.

Kari: We saw each other last night, remember?

TK: Oh! That's right. So we did.

Kari: So do you want to play cards?

TK: Okay.

(Kari goes to her room to fetch a pack of cards, TK waits for her in the living room)

Matt: Hi Sora.

Sora: Hey Matt. You're here.

(Matt sits down a few centimetres away from Sora on the couch)

Matt (Shyly): So… Sora… are you… looking forward to… today?

Sora (Smiles): You bet.

(Before Matt can say anything more, Tai jumps between them on the couch and wraps his arms around both of them)

Tai: Boy, today is going to be so much fun.

Kari: TAI! Keep quiet! Me and TK are trying to play cards over here.

Tai (Sarcastically): Well! Excuse me for living.

(The doorbell rings again)

Ding-Dong

Kari: I'll get it!

(She opens the door to reveal Izzy)

Izzy: Morning Kari.

Kari: Hi Izzy. Come in, join the party.

Izzy: Party already? (He peeks inside) It looks more like a quiet social gathering than a party to me Kari.

Kari (Uninterested): Whatever Izzy. Are you coming in or not?

Izzy: Certainly!

(Izzy enters)

Tai: Izzy my man, welcome.

(Matt and Sora turn around to greet Izzy)

Matt & Sora: Hi Izzy.

Izzy: Morning all.

TK: Hi Izzy. Can I play on your laptop please?

Izzy: Hello TK. Maybe later.

(Time passes…)

Tai (looks at watch): Where are Mimi and Joe?

Sora: Don't worry Tai, I'm sure they will be here any second.

(The doorbell goes off again)

Ding-Dong

Sora: See that must be them now.

(Tai opens the door and sees Mimi)

Tai: Hi Mimi. Where have you been?

Mimi: Hello Tai. I had some trouble deciding what outfit to put on.

Tai (Rolls his eyes): Typical. Where's Joe?

Mimi: Here he is. (She pulls Joe to the door) Guess who I caught trying to sneak on the school trip.

(Tai stares at Joe)

Joe (Nervously): Hi Tai.

Tai (Sighs): Never mind. Let's just go inside join the rest of the gang.

(They enter the living room. Matt is talking to Sora, TK and Kari are playing cards and Izzy is busy with his laptop. Everyone greets one another and they all sit down to discuss their plans for the day)

Matt: So now that we are all here, what are we going to do?

Mimi: Let's go shopping.

Tai: Sorry Mimi, no can do.

Mimi: Why!?!

Tai: We can't go around town.

Mimi: HUH?

Izzy: Tai's right. We cannot allow ourselves to be seen. It's best that we stay out of the public's eye.

Matt: You're making it sound like were criminals.

Joe: We are criminals!

All: Joe!

Joe: Sorry.

Tai: I have an idea!

(Everyone groans)

Tai: Aww come on. This idea is brilliant. At least give me a chance to explain.

Sora (Sighs): Okay, dazzle us.

Tai: Let's have a barbecue.

Matt: A BARBECUE!?!

Tai: Yeah! You heard me, a barbecue.

Joe: Tai that is outrageous. Where would we have it?

(Tai holds up his finger and points upwards. Everyone sits puzzled waiting for an answer)

Tai: The roof. It's big, quiet and empty.

Sora: I must admit that sounds like a great idea.

Mimi: You got my vote.

Izzy: I'm particularly impressed.

Matt: So am I. The only type of person who could think of such a plan has to be a great thinker…

(Joe interrupts Matt)

Joe: …or an evil genius.

(Everyone laughs)

Matt: So what do you think TK?

TK: I'm in!

Tai: Are you cool with it Kari?

Kari: Of course!

Tai: Okay, then it's settled. I'll raid my refrigerator for some food and drinks and then we'll make our way to the roof.

Kari: Tai, won't mum and dad get cross?

Tai: Yeah. but don't worry, I'll just blame it on you.

Kari: HEY!!!

Tai: Just kidding.

Kari (Relieved): Thank goodness for that.

On The Roof

(A few minutes later everyone arrives on the roof)

Sora: WOW! What a view!

Mimi: It's beautiful.

(The roof has a large flat area [that the residents occasionally used for roof parties] with a view of the city skyline that stretches for miles. The weather is perfect, not a cloud in the sky)

Izzy: What's wrong with you Joe? You look a little pale.

Joe: I just remembered that I'm allergic to heights.

Matt: Is there anything that you're not allergic to?

Joe: Nope.

(Everyone sighs)

Tai: Try not to think about it Joe. Let's set everything up and enjoy ourselves. Matt could you help get the deck chairs and the portable barbecue from that little hut over there?

Matt: Sure.

(They both walk to the small hut-like structure to take out and setup the deck chairs and portable barbecue)

Tai: That was thirsty work.

Matt: You said it. I need something to drink.

Tai: Me too. Anyone feel like a beer?

All: A BEER!?!

Tai: Is there an echo here?

Joe: Were too young to drink beer Tai, besides it's illegal for minors to drink alcohol.

Tai: Come on live a little, trust me.

(Tai opens his sports bag and takes out a couple of brown unlabelled bottles, opens them and hands each of the Digidestined a bottle. Tai is the first to take a swig, everyone looks at him in disbelief)

Tai: What? Isn't anyone else going to have a drink with me?

Matt: How can we? It's illegal.

Tai: Oh come on Matt, are you a chicken?

(Tai makes chicken noises to taunt Matt)

Matt: I'm not chicken!

Tai: Then drink it. Prove to me that you're not a chicken.

TK: Matt! Don't do it!

(Matt looks at the bottle, thinks for a second and then takes a big swig. Everyone looks at Matt waiting to see what will happen. Tai just stands there with a big grin on his face)

Matt: This is root beer.

Tai: Of course. I'm not THAT irresponsible?

(Everyone breathes a sigh of relief)

(Tai takes out his mini telescope and scans the city skyline)

Tai: Check it out you guys, I can see our school from here. There are the buses that were supposed to take us on the trip to the power plant.

Izzy: That reminds me, here are our sick notes. I printed them out last night.

(He hands everyone an absent note)

Joe: We're never going to get away with this.

Matt: Lighten up Joe, you only live once so enjoy the ride.

Joe: How can I enjoy the ride when I'm not wearing a seat belt?

(Everyone groans)

The Party

(As the dust settles, we join our heroes relaxing on the roof. Tai, Sora and Mimi are sitting on the deck chairs admiring the view of the city, TK is talking to Matt at the barbecue, Kari is with Izzy who is busy with his laptop and Joe is studying from some school books that he brought with him)

Tai: This is perfect.

Sora: Almost. All we need now is some music.

Mimi: Lucky I brought this with me today.

(Mimi opens her bag and pulls out a small pink portable radio)

Tai: Cool! Turn it on and let's dance.

(Mimi turns on the radio)

Tai (Bows): May I have this dance?

Sora (Smiles): You may.

(They begin to dance. Kari runs over to TK who is talking to Matt)

TK: So Matt, how long till the food is ready?

Matt: Not too long. (He notices Kari heading in their direction) Here comes Kari.

TK: I wonder what she wants?

Kari: TK Let's dance.

TK: No. I'll rather… YIKES!

(Kari pulls TK by his arm and drags him to the dance area. TK reluctantly dances with Kari. Mimi notices that she is the only one without a partner to dance with and so she decides to get one)

Mimi: Hey Izzy. Want to dance with me?

Izzy (Looks up from his laptop): Sorry Mimi I'm too busy trying to fix this problem on my laptop.

Mimi: Fine! Oh Matt would you like to dance with me, please?

Matt: Sorry, not right now Mimi. I'm cooking the food, perhaps later.

(Mimi becomes annoyed)

Mimi: Joe! I have chosen you to dance with me and I won't take NO for an answer.

Joe: But I can't… (She grabs him by his collar and drags him near to the area where Tai, Sora, TK and Kari are dancing)

Mimi: DANCE!

Joe: I…

Mimi: I SAID DANCE!

Joe (Gulps): mommy.

(Joe dances with Mimi, unfortunately he has two left feet)

Mimi: OW!

Joe: Oops! Sorry!

Mimi: OW!

Joe: Oops! Sorry again!

Mimi: Joe, let's rather sit this one out, I don't think my feet can take this sort of punishment.

Joe: Okay. That's a good idea because I've just found out that I'm allergic to dancing.

(Joe heads off to his own little corner, he opens his bag and takes out some pills for his allergies. He washes it down with the only drink that available to him - ginger beer. Unfortunately for Joe, mixing medicine and ginger beer can cause a weird chemical reaction. This causes his body to move much more freely than usual and his I.Q. to drop. The technical term is - HE'S DRUNK!)

Joe (Drunk): I CAN FEEL THE MUSIC. I MUST DANCE. NOW!!!!!!!!

(Joe gets up and begins to dance, and I use the word dance very loosely)

Kari: Hey TK what's wrong with Joe?

TK: I dunno. Maybe we should ask Sora?

Kari: Good idea. SORA!

Sora: Yes Kari.

(Kari points to Joe. Sora notices and becomes a little worried)

Sora: Tai, is something wrong with Joe?

Tai: What do you mean?

Sora: Just look at him. (She points to Joe) It's looks like someone threw itching powder down his neck.

(Tai looks at Joe)

Tai: JOE! HEY JOE! Are you okay?

Joe: Of course I am. I'm DANCING!

Tai: Call that dancing, I've seen people on fire that move better than you.

(Everyone laughs except for Joe who is in a world of his own. A slow song comes on and Mimi rushes to Joe, they begin to dance together, holding each other close with Joe's head resting on Mimi's shoulder)

Mimi: Joe would you like to know something?

Joe (Sleepy): Huh?

Mimi: You're pretty good at dancing when your drunk, don't you think so?

Joe (Even more sleepy): Ah huh.

Mimi: What ever you took has really made you more relaxed.

Joe: Zzzzzzz

Mimi: Joe? Are you awake?

Joe: Zzzzzzz

(She sighs and gentle places Joe in her chair)

Mimi (Smiles and Thinks to herself): He looks so peaceful when he is asleep. Could I have a crush on him?

Sleeping Beauty

(Tai is talking to Sora, Mimi is reading a romance novel, TK and Kari were listening to music on Mimi's radio, Izzy was still typing on his laptop, Joe continued to sleep and Matt was almost finish cooking the food)

Matt: The food is ready. Come and get it.

Tai: Alright! I'm famished.

Sora: Me too.

Mimi: Me three.

Izzy: Make that FORE!

TK: Hey don't forget us.

Kari: Yeah, we're starving.

(They got up, collected their food and were about to eat when Izzy spoke)

Izzy: Shouldn't someone wake up Joe?

Matt: What, is he still asleep?

Sora: Yes. We really should wake him up. He must be starving.

(They shouted at him, shook him, even tickled him but they couldn't wake him)

Tai: Boy! Joe is a sound sleeper. How are we ever going to wake him up?

Izzy: I have a solution.

Sora: Tell us.

Izzy: Seeing as Joe wants to become a doctor, he should have smelling salts in his bag along with all his other vitamins and tablets.

Matt: That makes sense.

Mimi: I'll check his bag.

(Mimi rushes over to Joe and rummages in his bag)

Mimi: Let's see now. Headache tablets, no, vitamins, no, pain killers, no, …sorry there's no smelling salts in here.

Izzy: That's funny, I was sure that Joe would have some smelling salts. Oh well, any other ideas?

(Everyone shakes their heads)

Mimi: I have an idea.

Tai (Whispers to Sora): This should be amusing.

(Sora elbows Tai in his stomach)

Tai: OW!

Sora: Mimi, please continue.

Mimi: Certainly. Do any of you remember the story of Snow White and the seven dwarfs?

Kari: That's my favourite fairy tale.

Sora: Sure. What about it?

Mimi: Do you remember the part when the handsome prince kissed Snow White and woke her up?

Tai: Sure, but I still don't understand what that's got to do with waking Joe up.

Mimi: It's simple. One of us has to kiss Joe so that he can wake up.

(Tai nudges Matt)

Tai: Matt resembles a prince the most, so he should kiss Joe.

Matt: WHAT!?!

(Matt begins to beat up Tai and TK cheers Matt on)

Tai: OW! I'm sorry. OW! I was just joking. OW! Stop it.

Matt: Make fun of me will you.

(Matt proceeds to beat Tai up some more and TK continues to cheer Matt on)

Izzy (Noticing that Mimi and Sora are looking at him): NO! FORGET ABOUT IT! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT! There is no way I'm going to kiss Joe. As hard as it is for you to fathom, I DO like girls. Understand?

Sora: Fine! We believe you. But who else?

Izzy: How about Kari?

Kari: I'm too young to do that.

Izzy: Then you do it Sora.

Sora: I'm not so sure…

Mimi: I'll do it.

Izzy: Okay. He's all yours Mimi.

Mimi: Super!

(Mimi walks over to her bag, takes out some pink strawberry lipstick and puts it on)

Sora: Er… Mimi why are you putting lipstick on?

Mimi: If you are going to kiss someone, it's best that you do it right first time.

Sora: Izzy, do you really think this will work?

Izzy: Well due to the lack of a sane plan, we should go with Mimi's.

(Mimi presses her lips against Joe's, the kiss lasts a full minute before she finally pulls away)

TK: EW!!! GROSS!!! I hate this mushy stuff!

Kari: I think it's kind of sweet.

Matt: He's still asleep.

Mimi: Give him a few seconds.

(A few seconds later Joe wakes up half dazed)

Joe (Dazed): What happened? Why do I smell strawberries? I'm allergic to strawberries!

Izzy: Prodigious!

Sora: Amazing!

Mimi: I know, I have that affect on boys.

Kari: Mimi, you're my idol.

Mimi (Smiles): Thanks.

Kari: I wonder if I can do that?

Mimi: Why don't you practise on TK?

Kari: Great idea!

Mimi: Here! Use my lipstick.

(She tosses her lipstick to Kari)

Kari: Thanks Mimi. You're the best.

(TK overhears Mimi and Kari's conversation)

TK: NO! I'm too young to be kissed.

(Kari begins to chase after TK)

Kari: Come on TK, it'll be fun. Who knows, you might enjoy it?

(Tai walks up to Joe with a bloody nose courtesy of Matt)

Tai: Hey Joe, have you got anything in your first aid kit for my nose? It's bleeding.

Joe (Shocked): Oh No! Blood! I'm allergic to blood!

(Joe faints)

Matt: Oh great, he's out again. Hey Mimi, it looks like your services are required again.

Mimi (Smiles): Oh well. When you got it, you got it.

The Feast

(Finally, they got Joe up. Gathering round a make-shift table they ate and told stories of the times they enjoyed together over the years)

Joe: You lot know something. I'm actually enjoying myself. This was a great idea to ditch school, and it's true, I do need to live a little.

Sora: Glad to hear that Joe. I also enjoy hanging out with all of you.

Kari: I really enjoyed myself. How about you TK?

TK: I've had better. (He wipes some of the many lipstick kiss marks left from Kari off his face) YUCK!!!

(Everyone laughs)

Matt: Today was great. It was nice to be surrounded by friends.

Izzy: I concur.

Mimi: Me too.

Tai: As they say all for one and one for all.

Joe: That's a bit of a cliché don't you think.

Tai: Well déjà vu to you too.

(Everyone giggles)

Matt: Seriously, if I were to ditch school again, I would only do it with you lot… maybe with the exception of Tai.

Tai: Hey!

Matt: Just kidding Tai.

Izzy: I myself have enjoyed this day of bonding.

Sora: Bonding? You were at your computer all the time.

Izzy: Precisely. Let's just say the time I spent on my laptop was very fruitful indeed.

Mimi: I had a great time too.

Joe: So did I.

(They hold hands and look into each other's eyes. Kari notices a small bottle of smelling salts half-sticking out of Mimi's pocket and smiles)

Sora: We should really do this again sometime.

(Everyone nods approvingly)

Matt: How about we hire another movie for tonight?

Tai: Yeah! Let's get Star Wars. Some of those ships are named after me you know.

Sora: WHAT!?! You got to be kidding. What ships are named after you?

Tai: The TAI fighter, the TAI advanced, the TAI…

Sora: Okay! Okay! Okay! We get it now.

Matt: Maybe we should let TK and Kari decide.

Tai: Good idea. (Looks to TK and Kari) So, what would you two like to hire?

TK & Kari: WE WANT A CARTOON!
