Chapter I: ENIAC
I spared a quick glance at the sign that rested upon my door as I rushed to check my email: “Nathaniel's room. Enter and Die…” I ran around my desk and practically threw myself into my chair. Turning on my computer, I bided my time by snacking on a handful of chips. Okay, three new messages.
The first was from Andrew, saying something about some anime. The second was the one I had been awaiting. It was from Caitlin, my girlfriend, asking me to meet her at the movies tomorrow night. I didn't know who had sent the third one. The email address was ENIACdjm.factorymark.co.jp. Apparently it was from Japan. Despite what I've been told about opening emails from people I don't know, I opened it. It was in Japanese; it said hello.
For some reason, I responded with, “hello.” A moment later another message arrived, from the same person saying, “do you want to meet me?” Without thinking, I responded, “yes.” Another moment and I clicked his newest response. It didn't say anything this time, but had an attachment. Without really knowing why, I opened the attachment. A strange program appeared on the screen; it had a counter and was counting down from twenty.
Thinking the program was a virus, I tried to close the window, but nothing worked. It seemed that I was going to be stuck with reformatting my computer again. But when the timer ran out it wasn't a virus. My computer screen began to swirl. Inadvertently, I reached out and touched the monitor. My hand went straight through the screen. Shocked, I attempted to pull my hand back, but it wouldn't budge. Suddenly, I felt a jerk, and my surroundings began to swirl.
When I once again regained perspective, I was in a world stranger than any I had ever seen. I was standing on a walkway, which was thin and of solid stone and stood inside a nigh bottomless pit. It stretched forever behind me, but in front there was a short staircase. At the top of the staircase stood a dais, and on top of the dais hovered a ball of pure energy. Amazed, I stood and scaled the stairs.
I nearly fell into the abyss when the energy ball began talking. “Welcome, Nathaniel. I am ENIAC. I am glad that you have arrived whole and well. Do you know why you are here?”
I laughed at this sphere of light's question. “I don't even know where `here' is. And how do you know my name?”
“I know your name because I am programmed to know it. You are the Savior.”
“You still didn't answer my question. Maybe I made it a bit too hard for you: Where the hell am I?” Cryptic…things didn't exactly make me all full of joy.
“You are in the Digital World, or, to be more precise, an antechamber of the Digital World.”
“This is getting annoying, and I have a date tomorrow. Just tell me how to get home. Now.”
“To get home, you must complete your mission. That is all I know about that subject.”
“Do you know how I can complete my `mission'?” I was really getting the shits of this guy.
“First, you must let me explain about myself, and about you. Then I will tell you how to begin your mission. How to complete it, however, I do not know, for I was not programmed to know.”
“Okay, okay, just tell me so I can get home.”
“I am ENIAC. I was the first computer. The Digital World began with me, and if you do not stop it, it will end with me. You are the Tamer that I summoned to change this world's fate. Your mission is to stop the Great Darkness from spreading and destroying our world.” He seemed to want me to think he was something special.
“Why should I help you? I mean, it's not like anything bad would come of it, right?”
“If you do not help us, you will die.”
I was shocked, but I did have enough left for that statement to fully register. “What do you mean us?”
“I mean the Digital Monsters and myself.”
“Monsters? I haven't seen any monsters here.”
ENIAC began to glow a crimson color and an enormous red beetle with giant pincers appeared to the left over the cliff before quickly disappearing. “What the hell was that?”
“That was a Kuwagamon. A Digital Monster. A Digimon. Do you believe me now, Nathaniel?”
“If it means getting home sometime soon, I guess I have to believe it.” That thing did look pretty real. “I won't have to be around many of them, will I?”
ENIAC almost seemed to laugh. “Yes, Nathaniel. You will become friends with three of them. For the most part, the rest will try to stop you from completing your mission.”
“Does that mean that this Great Darkness you mentioned is a Digimon?” I was on to something, I think.
“Yes. That is all I have learned about this topic. Now, if you have no more questions, I have a few gifts for you.”
“Alright, let's see `em.” Now I was actually getting curious.
“First, I have your Digital Device, or DigiVice.” A small, palm-sized electronic object appeared in my right hand. It was egg-shaped and was gold around the screen. It was transparent around the gold and had two red buttons, one above the other on the right side. In the center of the bottom was a circular white button. I clipped it to my belt as he began talking once more.
“That will do many things. I was only programmed to tell you one, however. It can help you evolve your Digimon. I do not, however, understand how. Next is your tag.” Around my neck appeared a small, thin, see-through pendant, supported by a cord.
“I do not have any knowledge on what that holds; I only know that it was made as a device for carrying something important.”
“Why do you have it if you don't know what it's for?”
“I do not know the answer to this question. Next, you shall receive a D-Terminal.” A small silver and black device appeared in my left hand, and I quickly put it in my pocket, waiting to hear how it could be used. “It can communicate with others of your kind here in the Digital World. It also has another function, but it is unknown to me at this time.”
“There are other humans here?” I was astonished.
“Yes, there are two. Unfortunately, one of them serves the Great Darkness. My final gift to you is your three Digimon partners.” Behind me were suddenly three small creatures, apparently my Digimon partners. “The one closest to you is Koromon. Next is Pukamon. The last is Tsunomon. They are all in their second stage baby level. When they evolve they will become incredibly powerful assets to our cause.”
“Hi!” chorused my partners. I almost lost my balance with surprise.
I smiled and rubbed the back of my head. “Hello, all.”
“Begin your mission by seeking out Airdramon. He will help you with your mission. I also suggest meeting up with this other human in this world. He or she may be able to help you. Now go!”
The orb of energy flared and I was blinded. When I regained my sight I was standing in a meadow outside of a large city. My Digimon were still by my side. “Where are we?” I asked.
Koromon was the first to reply. “I don't know. I think we need to go through the city to get to Airdramon's domain.”
Tsunomon seemed shocked. “We can't go there, because Dark Tyranomon rules there.”
“What's that matter? You guys are supposed to be able to take anything. That's why you're with me, remember?”
Pukamon answered this time. “We're supposed to protect you, yeah, but he's an Adult Digimon. That means he's two levels above us.”
I sighed as I thought of our dilemma. “Well, ENIAC told us we had to get to this Airdramon, right? I say we sneak through the city and try our luck. Are you three with me?”
The three of them smiled and jumped for joy. Koromon even wrapped himself around my face. When I got him off, we left for the city and our destinies.

Author's Notes: Not all that much to say after that first chapter. It'll get more exciting soon, and a few new characters will be introduced, but that's to be expected. The chapter lengths are short, and they're meant to be. With my writing style it keeps things going at a faster pace. I can't promise too many updates with school coming up, but I'll do my best. I try to use Japanese names for all moves and Digimon. If I don't, it's because I don't know them.
btw: ENIAC really was the first computer.
Next Chapter - Atanasoff: We learn of one of the other Tamers arrival into the digital world…See who it is and the role that they'll take.
