Kouji sighed as he looked up wearily at the clock hung on the wall of the college library, it was almost ten at night and Kouji had been studying for hours, but he always found it easier to study in the library instead of his own dorm room, he wasn't sure why though.

With that he picked himself up off the seat and closed the books on the table in front of him before picking them up and slowly left the library, making his way home.

Outside the air was cool and fresh. The sky was cloudless so each and every star could be seen sparkling above, Kouji smiled at them as he carried on his short journey, clutching his books close to his chest firmly.

It had been just over 9 years since he and his friends had their adventure in the digital world and everything had been pretty normal since then. Kouji was now nineteen years old and was a very hard working English student at the Tobia College, where he found out many other digi-destinds attended besides him, Takuya and Junpei. He didn't exactly know them all but he had befriended a few of them. Ken Ichijouji was one of them. The two of them had often talked about their separate adventures in the digital world and treated them as good memories, after all those adventures had changed both of them in the same way...

...they had made friends and both had realized that friends aren't such a bad thing after all.

Suddenly Kouji was taken out of his deep thoughts by the sounds of a woman screaming not too far from him. If there was one thing that hadn't changed about Kouji was his ability to help people who needed it, no matter what the outcome.

As he ran around the science block he saw a young woman about the same age as him cornered against the wall by three large looking men, who didn't look at all friendly. Kouji narrowed his eyes as he slowly approached them, then stopped only a few feet away from them as he put his books down on the floor.

"HEY!" he bellowed at them making the men look up at him. "Leave her alone..."

"Or what, pretty boy..." the one nearest to Kouji sneered as he grabbed the girl and held her tightly around her neck with one arm while the other held a knife tightly.

A small smile grew on Kouji's face as he glared at the three men who were now looking confused, wondering why he was smiling at them. Suddenly Kouji lunged towards the front man, who in shock, let go of the knife and the girl who quickly scrambled to a safe distance. Both Kouji and the front man fell to the floor and began to tussle on the ground. Then Kouji through the man off him giving him enough time to grab a large branch that had been lying near him.

As he stood back up and positioned the branch in his hands the front man joined his two friends at a far distance from Kouji. All three of them looked at the nineteen year old with pure fear on their faces, before running off quickly into the darkness.

Kouji watched them leave, then relaxed as he gave a sigh of relief and through the branch to the floor. He then looked up at the girl he had saved who was cautiously approaching him.

"Erm... thankyou..." she said, her voice shaking from the experience she just had. Kouji just gave her a smile then walked up to her, but this just made the girl take a few steps back. Kouji frowned at her as he watched her eyes wander from him to the ground. The poor girl was obviously shaken up.

"It's okay..." he reassured her. "...I'm not going to hurt you..." He then noticed a stream of red blood that was trickling down the right side of the girls head. Kouji carefully touched her face so she moved her head slightly to the left side so he could see better.

"You're bleeding"

"It was probably when they tackled me to the floor..." the girl replied quietly. "...I remember hitting my head on the ground"

Both of them went silent as Kouji picked up his books, he then once again looked at the girl and held out his hand towards her.

"Kouji Minamoto... and you are?"

The girl paused for a few seconds, then gradually put her hand in his.

"August Burrows"

"August..." Kouji repeated. "...nice name" August fell silent again as they both let go of each others hands, she obviously didn't take nice comments well. Kouji gave her a friendly grin as he turned and began to walk away. "Come on..." he said. "...the least I could do is take you back to my place and get you fixed up over a cup of hot chocolate"

August was about to decline Kouji's offer but the words just got stuck in her throat. Eventually she decided to follow Kouji back to his dorm; after all it seemed better than staying outside in the dark all alone.

*************************

"Here we are..." Kouji announced as he unlocked the door to his apartment sized dorm room. As he switched the light on August was faced with the small living room in front of her and the kitchen on the left, both with loads of boxes in them.

"Still haven't unpacked?" she asked Kouji as she walked into the dorm room, taking in the sight all around her. Kouji just laughed quietly to himself as he shut the door behind her.

"Surprisingly I haven't had the chance to do much un-packing..." he told her. "...and I've been here for over a month" He then pointed over to the table in the middle of the kitchen. "Just make yourself comfortable..."

August nodded then went to sit down at the table as Kouji began to play about in the kitchen. As he did August just glanced around the room. The kitchen was coloured pure white and obviously needed some colour adding to it. Then she noticed some pictures that were stood on the kitchen side... one was of Kouji and a boy who looked a lot like him and the other was of them and three older people, a man and two women.

"Here hold this to your head" Kouji said as he handed a damp piece of cloth to August who thanked him for it, she then went back to looking at the pictures. Kouji followed her gaze and smiled when he saw them.

"Pictures of my family..." he told her as he sat in a chair beside her. "... my brother, Kouichi, my mother, father and step-mother"

"You and your brother look a lot alike" August replied.

"We should do..." Kouji laughed. "...We're twins"

"Really?" gasped August. "Well that answers that then"

Kouji's attention turned to the kettle as it stopped boiling then turned back to August. "After the hot chocolate I'll walk you back you your dorm..." August just gave him a small grunt as she sat back in the chair.

"I don't think I even want to go back there"

"Why?"

August sighed as she sat forward again. "My room-mates are party animals, ever since we came here they've had parties every night. Don't get me wrong, I'm up for a party every now and then...but not every night until four am every morning! I was thinking of moving out but I have no one else to stay with"

"Then it's your lucky day!" Kouji replied enthusiastically. "My room mate moved out last week. He couldn't cut the college lifestyle so went back home, I've been looking for a replacement"

"I...don't know..."

"Oh come on..." Kouji tried to persuade her. "I know we barley know each other...but I didn't know my last room mate either... and he made it clear that he didn't want anything to do with me..."

"Well...." August paused as she thought deeply about the situation. Then after a few minutes she smiled at Kouji. "...okay!"

"Great!" replied Kouji. "I'll run you through the boring things like bills and groceries and stuff like that tomorrow"

"Is it okay if I stay here tonight?" August asked. "I don't fancy going back to "The party den" now. I can guarantee some jerk has already thrown up on the carpet and I would have to be the one to clean it up"

"Nasty..." cringed Kouji. He then pointed to one of two doors behind August. "That one will be your room, if you want I'll lend you one of my shirts for you to sleep in tonight and we'll get your stuff tomorrow afternoon"

August smiled and thanked Kouji for his generous offer before she got up to check out her new bedroom.

************************

Meanwhile outside in the cover of darkness, a black shadowy figure stood above the blood drenched bodies of the three men who had attacked August earlier in the night. The shadowy figure then looked up towards the moon as it remembered the boy who had attacked these men. Its blood red eyes narrowed, even the thought of that simple boy made it feel uneasy...there was defiantly something about him...

...but what?

************************

The next morning August sleepily wandered out of her bedroom dressed only in the long blue shirt Kouji had given her the night before. Kouji, who was sat at the kitchen table, looked up from the paper he was reading as she walked over and sat down across from him.

"Sleep well?" he asked before taking a bite from the toast he was holding in his right hand and went back to reading the paper.

"Well lets say that was the most I've slept for a while" August replied as she took the second piece of toast from a plate sat by Kouji's right arm on the table and took a bite out of it, she then noticed the look on Kouji's face as he read an article in the paper, it was the look of fear and disgust.

"What is it?" she asked. Kouji looked up at his new roommate and swallowed hard.

"Apparently last night three men were found murdered around the back of the sports block of the college" he told her.

"You don't think it was the same three men who attacked me, do you?" August asked. Kouji just shook his head slightly.

"I don't know..."

Kouji then looked at the watch on his wrist and groaned as he stood up, throwing his bag over his shoulder.

"I'm late for class" he said as he began franticly looking for his mobile phone, eventually finding it on the side with his keys which he threw to August who caught them in her hands. "Do you have any classes today"

"Nope" August replied. "Tuesday is "Study Day" In other words, I do nothing!"

"Well how about we meet up in the college cafe at midday" Kouji suggested. August smiled and nodded. Kouji nodded back at her before flying out of the door, slamming it behind him. August couldn't help but snigger to herself after he left...

...Kouji was a nice guy, but not very organised. Maybe he just wasn't a morning person.

*****************************

"Late, Mr. Minamoto?" Kouji's English tutor asked him rhetorically as Kouji burst through the classroom doors, out of breath.

"I'm sorry..." he said between deep gasps of air. He then quietly sat down beside TK Takaishi, who was one of the other Digi-destinds he knew.

Kouji's English tutor watched Kouji settle down then went back to the lesson.

"Hey, did you hear about those murders?" TK whispered to Kouji. Kouji looked up at his friend and nodded.

"It's amazing something like that happened around here..." he replied. "...and the spooky thing is that I might of seen those guys only hours before they were killed..."

"Do you boys have something to add to the lesson?" Their English tutor asked harshly. Both Kouji and TK looked at him nervously with sweat drops forming on their heads.

"Er...no..." replied TK, which sounded more like a question rather than an answer.

"Well since you boys seen SO interested in these murders I'm going to give you a special assignment to write a newspaper article on it..." their English tutor sneered. "...and it best be good!"

With that he turned his back on the class again, causing Kouji and TK to relax a little.

**************************

Meanwhile back at the dorm August was still sat at the kitchen table, reading the college newspaper and finishing off the toast Kouji had left. She was transfixed by the article on the murders of the three men, she couldn't help but feel there was more too it than met the eye.

Suddenly the door of the dorm opened. August watched it carefully on her guard, but relaxed when she saw it was only Kouji's brother Kouichi, who walked straight into the kitchen to the refrigerator, ignoring August totally.

After watching him root through the refrigerator for a few minutes August decided to let her presence be known by coughing loudly. Kouichi looked up at August and raised one eyebrow at her.

"Hi I'm August, Kouji's new room mate.." she introduced herself. "...you must be his twin brother Kouichi"

Kouichi stayed silent for a while, then shrugged his shoulders.

"Whatever!"

With that he went back to rooting around in the refrigerator much to August's surprise

"Does Kouji know you steal his food when he's out?"

"I dunno" came Kouichi's reply, not even glancing at August. "Gotta steal something" His eyes then lit up as he pulled out a small piece of chocolate cake. "Ooooooooooh! Cake!"

August just kept on watching him nervously.

"Oooooooooookay?"

**************************

"And it best be good..." TK mocked as he and Kouji walked through the college courtyard after their lesson had ended. "Gees, he really should think of becoming a school teacher rather than a college tutor... maybe we should set an ogremon or something on him..."

"Or I could evolve to Garmmon and tear him to shreads..." Kouji joked back. The two boys laughed loudly before they stopped walking.

"Well I'm off to the cafe" Kouji told his friend. "I promised to meet my new room mate there"

"Okay!" replied TK. "I'll see you later then"

With that the two boys parted ways.

*************************

"Hey! Kouji!"

Kouji looked up as he entered the cafe to see Takuya, Junpei and Ken sat at a table in the middle of the room. Kouji waved to them to tell them that he had seen them and that he'd be over in a minute. He then joined the queue for the coffee.

A few minutes later he joined his three friends at the table, carrying with him two polystyrene cups of coffee. As he placed them on the table Takuya looked at them.

"Who's the extra one for?" he asked.

"My new room mate" Kouji replied. "She should be here soon"

Suddenly a large cheesy grin grew across Takuya's face as he playfully elbowed Kouji in the arm. "She, ey?"

"Ack! Takuya! It's nothing like that!" Kouji snapped back. "She just needed a place to stay and I offered it too her, that's all"

"Yeah right!" Junpei replied, with a huge sneer on his face. "You two will be at it in no time flat!"

"JUNPEI!!!" Kouji snapped, his face going bright red. "I told you! It's nothing like that!"

"Then why are you blushing?" laughed Takuya as he grabbed Kouji around the neck and gave him a playful "Noogie" on his head. As Kouji tried to fight his way out of it Ken eventually spoke.

"Well I think it's great that you have a new room mate... TO HELP PAY THE BILLS" He said, emphasising the last part as he turned to Junpei to show he was backing up kouji.

"I bet two candy bars that they'll have sex within the next two weeks" Junpei snorted back with a huge grin on his face.

"Your on!" replied Ken as they both shook on the deal.

"Just please behave when she gets here" Kouji pleaded with his friends. "I really need a room mate at the moment, paying for the groceries just by myself is getting too much"

"Hummmm... suuuuuuuure" said Takuya, but he soon shut up when Kouji shot him a warning look. Then he looked up and saw August enter the cafe, kouji signalled too her to come over.

August waded her way through the crowded cafe and stood beside Kouji.

"Guys, this is my new room mate August" Kouji said. "August, these are my best friends, Takuya, Junpei and Ken"

"Hi there..." August said to them quietly as she fiddled with the strap on her bag awkwardly.

"Shy type..." Junpei whispered to Ken. "...Quite a turn on" He then winked at him but that soon turned to a face of pain as kouji kicked Junpei in the shin discreetly to tell him to be quiet.

"Oh, by the way, something followed me here" August said as she turned towards the door as Kouichi made his way through the door and headed towards them. All the lads groaned, as Junpei hit is head on the table in disbelief.

"Do you know he steals food from your fridge when your not there" August asked Kouji, Kouji just nodded.

"Keeps him out of trouble for a few hours so I don't mind"

As the group carried on with their conversation a shadow of dark energy with red glowing eyes were watching them from the window. It began laughing evilly as it sneaked away.

As it did Kouichi lifted his head up suddenly and looked towards the window but saw nothing there...but he defiantly sensed something... but what?
