AUTHOR'S NOTES:
(*Makes an effort to dodge the rotten tomatoes being thrown by Takuya fans*)
Heh! Well by that comment you probably know what happens THIS episode :p Oh and by the way…Kouji and Kouichi are STAYING AS TWINS in this fic… despite it just being revealed that Kouichi is a year older than Kouji… I love the twinness :p Well that and I can't be bothered to change it ^_^;; Note to self: Never again make a digimon fic in the middle of a digimon season, not a good idea! :p

Episode Six: - "The worst day of my life! The offer from Darkness!"

"So you don't mind helping me with this assignment?" Kouji asked August as she sat down beside him at the kitchen table, placing two cans of soda on it as she did.

"I don't mind at all" August replied. "You've been through so much recently what with your best friend being ill...it isn't fair for your English tutor to give you loads of extra work to make up for the stuff you have missed recently"

Kouji just gave out a small sigh and looked at the various books in front of him. It was true, it was unfair of his tutor to give him all this extra work especially at a time when Kouji would rather spend time with his seriously ill friend than read and report on a bunch of books.

It had been a few days since the attack by the shadow at Takuya and Junpei's dorm, which was now completely trashed, luckily they were able to stay with someone in a neighbouring dorm, but these past few days Takuya's condition had worsened and everyone knew that now it was only a matter of time before he was taken from them.

"Kouji...?"

Kouji snapped out of his daze and quickly looked up at August who was frowning back at him.

"If you're not up to this work just tell that damn tutor of yours..."

"No...I'm okay... really..." Kouji replied back as he opened up one of the books in front of him and looked down at it. Even though it looked like he was reading he wasn't, the words on the page didn't seem to make sense; he just couldn't concentrate on them.

Suddenly Kouji's mobile rang, he looked down at it and saw Junpei's name on the screen so quickly picked it up and answered it.

"Hey Junpei..." he said, he then listened to what Junpei was saying on the other side. "...what!? Okay I'll be right there!" Kouji ended the call on the phone then quickly got up off his seat and grabbed his coat.

"What is it?" August asked as Kouji headed towards the door.

"It's Takuya..." Kouji replied. "He's had to go into hospital... I'm going to see him...I'll be back later"

With that kouji shot out of the door accidentally slamming it behind him. August watched him leave then looked down at the piece of paper she had been doodling on earlier, full of little anime character sketches she had been doing before Kouji had asked for her help with the assignments. Just then she noticed something red hit the paper. Confused, she stared at it for some time before realizing what it was... blood!

August quickly ran to the bathroom and switched the light on so she could see her image in the mirror. A small trickle of blood was coming from her nose. She gasped as she looked at it, and then bowed her head with a sigh slightly cursing to herself, half with anger, half with fear.

Kouji ran quickly into the ward that takuya was on in the Hospital but stopped dead when he saw his friend hooked up to all kinds of wires and machines. He then saw Junpei sat beside his bed watching Takuya's chest rise and fall slowly. Kouji swallowed hard as he gradually approached the bed, Junpei looked up as he did, a look of sorrow on his face.

"The doctors can't do anything..." he told Kouji. "...now we just have to wait..." With that Junpei gave out a tired sigh and rubbed his eyes. He hadn't gotten much sleep since Takuya fell ill, especially these last few nights he had to look after Takuya almost all day and night not leaving much time for rest. With that kouji threw Junpei his dorm keys who caught them easily in his hands. Junpei looked up with a puzzled look on his face.

"Get some rest" he told his friend. "August won't mind if you go over there for a little while"

"But..." Junpei looked over at takuya. "...what about...?"

"The minute anything changes I'll call you"

Junpei thought for a while, but the prospect of sleep was extremely appealing so agreed to rest at kouji's.

"But only for a little while, I'll be back here later"

Kouji nodded, and then watched his friend leave the ward. Kouji then turned towards Takuya, despite being connected to so many machines and stuff he did seem to be resting peacefully. With that the nineteen year old sat down where Junpei had been sitting and put his head in his hands trying to hide the tears that were now falling from his face.

*****************************

Meanwhile Kouichi was walking slowly through the college campus, he was just walking back to his own dorm from Kari's. Despite the differences between the two of them they both had developed a strong friendship, neither of them knew what they liked in each other to be friends, but they seemed to get along so well, so they decided not to try and question it.

As he listened to some heavy metal rock tune through his Walkman Kouichi suddenly became away of a dark presence around him. He gradually stopped walking and took the earphones away from his ears, trying to listen out for what he felt was following him, but he heard nothing. Then he heard a bush rustle slightly behind him, Kouichi swung around but saw nothing there.

"Heh! Maybe it was a cat..." he told himself. "...or a witch or something, yeah, yeah, it was an ugly witch that's obsessed with stalking me"

Normally kouichi would of sniggered at his own stupid joke, but this time he was using his bizarre sense of humour to cover up the fact that inside he was terrified. With that he began walking again, which gradually turned into a sprint as he ran around the corner. He knew something was following him, but he couldn't see it. Then out of nowhere came a sinister whispering voice, which echoed all around him, making Kouichi stop running and fall to his knees in shock.

Kouichi...join me...Kouichi, Kouichi, Kouichi....

Kouichi just held his head in his hands as he shook with fear, the voice still repeating his name over and over again.

"Oh bad day! Bad day!" kouichi whimpered as he closed his eyes tightly hoping everything would just go away. Then a dark cloud surrounded him making the boy scream, then the cloud disappeared, along with Kouichi.

******************************

"Huh?"

Kouji looked up suddenly from the magazine he had been reading. A sudden sense of dread had just gone through him, almost like something was wrong but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. He looked up at the monitor Takuya was on but everything seemed fine. As he stared at the monitor a nurse walked in and watched Kouji for a while before speaking.

"What happened to the other boy?"

Shocked, Kouji's head quickly turned towards the nurse, it took a few seconds for him to realize who she meant.

"Junpei? I told him to get some rest..."

The nurse walked over to Takuya's bedside and began checking over him, Kouji watched with interest as she did.

"So your this boys friend also?" she asked looking at Takuya. Kouji nodded slightly.

"We've known each other since we were about 10 years old" he replied.

"It's a shame your friendship is being cut short..." the nurse continued. She then looked up at kouji and smiled. "...try talking to him, trust me, he maybe unconscious but he'll hear you"

The nurse then left to check on another patient. Kouji slowly stood up, looked down at his friends pale thin face and slowly opened his mouth.

"Ta...Takuya..." he whispered so no one else in the room could hear him but his friend. He then touched his forehead lightly. "...I'm here"

Just then, Takuya's eyes opened like a flash. Kouji let out a small gasp and stepped back a few paces causing the nurse to walk back over to him. Takuya's eyes seemed to scan the room he was in as if making sense of where he was, he then saw Kouji stood beside him.

"Ko...Kouji..." he said faintly. Kouji walked further towards his friend and then sat back in the chair beside the bed. As he did a small smile grew on Takuya's face. "Nice to see you again buddy" Kouji just smiled back and nodded. Takuya then motioned for Kouji to get the backpack, which happened to be hung on the chair Kouji was sat on. Kouji got the bag and held it in his hands, looking up at Takuya with a puzzled look on his face.

"Look inside it..." Takuya told his friend. Kouji hesitated but eventually put his hand in the bag and pulled out Takuya's goggles. "...I know it's not much but... I want you to have them Kouji..."

Kouji smiled slightly as the hospitals florescent lights shone in the glass of the goggles, reminding him of that cocky ten year old he knew all those years back...

...now look at him, he thought to himself as he looked up at his friend.

"Thankyou Takuya"

Takuya just gave his friend a small warm smile; he then closed his eyes slowly as the sounds on the monitor began to change, catching Kouji's attention. He quickly stood up as the green line on the monitor began to straighten out, and the beeping had become just one loud constant sound.

"No..." he whispered to himself as he glanced at takuya, he seemed to be sleeping; he HAD to be sleeping, right?

Kouji began to nudge his friend as hard as he dared trying desperately to find some indication he was still alive but nothing was happening.

"Takuya.... Takuya .... " Tears then streamed down Kouji's face as he made one last desperate attempt to wake up his friend.

"TAAAAAAAAKUYYYYYYYYYA!!!"

Hearing the commotion a doctor ran up to them and stopped by the side of the nurse who was in tears herself as she watched Kouji weep by the body of his best friend. The doctor sighed and looked at his watch.

"Time of death... eleven o two..." he muttered to himself, as if keeping a mental note of it. He then hung his head in respect for Takuya.

**************************

Kouichi opened his eyes slowly but he couldn't see anything...just...black...He carefully stood up and looked all around him hoping to find a clue to where he was, but there was nothing.

"Kouichi..."

Kouichi spun around as he heard his name mentioned but he could still se nothing.

"Who are you?" he shouted. "And what do you want with me?"

"I have a proposal for you..." the voice replied. "...I have sensed a great power in you which would help me and if you agree then I will give you more power, power beyond your wildest dreams, Kouichi..." Kouichi listened carefully to what the voice was telling him. "...all I want you to do is kill that Kouji and his miserable friends..."

"You want me to kill my brother...?" Kouichi said, he then shook his head harshly before looking back at the darkness surrounding him. He narrowed his eyes slowly and clenched his fists hard. "... I don't care what you're offering I won't do it! I may have had my differences with my brother in the past but that's all over with now...he's my brother, together the two of us are one..." Kouichi then suddenly raised his voice as the anger began to build up in him. "YOU CAN'T CHANGE THAT!!!"

"SO BE IT!!!" the voice bellowed back at him. "We will just have to do it for you"

With that the darkness surrounding Kouichi began to swirl viciously around him, despite Kouichi's desperate attempts to keep it away from him. Then some of the darkness entered Kouichi's body making him fall to his hands and knees as he began to gasp for air. He shut his eyes tightly as he tried his best not to let the darkness get the better of him, but he could feel it overtaking his body and he was helpless to stop it. Kouichi opened his eyes slightly as he shook with fear...

"Brother...forgive me..." he finally muttered to himself before completely collapsing to the floor unconscious.

******************************

Kouji stared at the running river beneath the bridge he was stood on and sighed as he adjusted his large tan coloured coat as a bitter cold wind blew past him. He had left the hospital almost half an hour ago but he felt like he needed to be on his own for a while and the small bridge on the small country path back to the college seemed like an ideal place.

This late October night was terribly cold but for some reason it didn't seem to bother Kouji the slightest bit, all he could think of were his memories of Takuya, the adventures they had in the digital world and the last moment they spent together.

Takuya, Takuya, TAAAKKKKKUYAAAAA...

"Takuya..." Kouji whispered under his breath, he then narrowed his eyes as more thoughts entered his head.

That Shadow, that darkness... he thought. ...that must be the cause of this illness, just another way for it to torment us, to play with us. Well I don't want to play it's game anymore, I'll avenge your death takuya...you can count on that...

With that Kouji reached out and plucked the last leaf on a tree that was stood beside him and just dropped it into the river below, as if it was a symbol to sealing his promise to Takuya. He watched the river gradually take the leaf away on the currant before leaving for the college.

******************************

It was almost one in the morning by the time Kouji finally walked through the door of his dorm apartment. Junpei was sat at the kitchen table reading a magazine but quickly looked up as Kouji came through the door.

"Hey! How's Taku..." Junpei broke off his sentence as he noticed the miserable look on his friends face as Kouji slumped himself in a chair across from Junpei.

"He died" Kouji replied, not looking at his friend. "It happened so fast...one minute he was talking to me the next..."

The two boys fell silent as they remembered their friend. Then after a few minutes Kouji looked up and glanced around the room.

"Where's August?"

A sudden harsh coughing coming from August's bedroom answered Kouji's question. He quickly stood up from his chair and glared at the door of her room, before turning around to look at Junpei.

"She begged me not to tell you..." he said. "...she didn't want you to worry about her"

"That's it!" Kouji whispered harshly as he clenched his fists hard causing them to shake as the anger just built up in him. "That shadow thing has gone too far this time, I'm not letting it get away with all this. It's time someone put a stop to this... FOREVER!!!!" Kouji suddenly delved his right hand into his coat pocket and pulled out his D-Scanner, which he quickly held up into the air. "SPIRIT..."

"NO!!!" Yelled Junpei as he grabbed Kouji's arm. Kouji just glared at him.

"Let go Junpei!" he snapped. Junpei just shook his head.

"I can't let you do it Kouji" he told his friend. "You know that you can't spirit evolve while that darkness is around, you might end up hurting someone you love, like when you evolved to Garmmon..."

Kouji's eyes grew large as he remembered the incident with Garmmon, when he had almost killed Takuya and August himself.

"...believe me all I wanna do is spirit evolve and kick this darkness' ass too..." Junpei replied. "...but I can't, neither of us can and even if we could, what's to say we'd win, ey? Please, just stay here Kouji, stay with August, she needs you now..."

Kouji sighed as he began to calm down, Junpei slowly let go of his friends arm as he slumped back down onto the chair and buried his face in his arms on the table. Junepi could tell all this was getting to his friend and there was nothing anybody could do to help. So he just placed a reassuring hand on his friends shoulder letting him know that all his friends would be there, no matter what.

*******************************

Later that night Kouji was laying in his bed wide awake listening to the horrid coughing coming from August's room next to his. After a while Kouji just turned over to his side hoping that he could block out the sound, but he couldn't. With that he got out of his bed with a sigh.

******************************

"August...?"

August looked up to see Kouji stood just inside the doorway to her bedroom, holding a glass of water in his right hand. He slowly approached her bed and handed her the water before sitting down beside her.

"Thankyou..." August said to him, before taking a sip of water out of the glass, she then looked at kouji as she placed the glass on her bedside cabinet. "Guess you know now, ey?"

Kouji nodded slightly as he sat back on the bed. August just started to weep and she made a desperate attempt to wipe the tears from her eyes, Kouji just put his arm around her to comfort her. Eventually she calmed down and gradually fell asleep beside her friend. Kouji watched her for a while before he too settled down to sleep... he didn't feel like he should leave August alone, at least not for tonight anyway. So he rested his head on the pillow next to hers and slowly closed his eyes. His last thoughts were of her and Takuya...

I'll avenge both of you...
