Kaplan Saga
The date is 2129, three years after World War Three, in which the poor nations and Communist nations of the Earth fought with the UN against the rich nations. The Earth is now controlled by the United Nations Organisation and assisting it in keeping the peace over the planet is the Earth Voluntary Army Organisation or EVA. It is an era of peace, where the Governments of the past nations now answer to the UN instead of their Head of State. However, even in these times of peace there is unrest and it will soon tear the very planet apart...
Chapter 1: Fist of the Beast King
The seventeen-year old boy moaned, as he clutched at his head. That was one Heck of a headache. He felt as if his head were about to split apart. Opening his eyes, he was suddenly greeted with blindingly white light, and decided to close his eyes again. 'Where am I?' he wondered. He tried thinking back to the past and what had happened up until then... 'Let's see... I was taking a shortcut through the park towards my apartment when... Those men! They grabbed me and...' He suddenly realised he'd been kidnapped. But why? 'Okay, Kai, open your eyes- slowly this time- and see where you are.'
This time, he opened his eyes slowly, brushing his brown hair out of his brown eyes. 'Why am I wearing one of those flimsy backless gowns the hospitals force patients to wear?' he wondered, as he looked down at himself. 'Have I been abducted by aliens?'
"There's other people here!" he exclaimed and was glad of that fact. He scrambled over to the nearest one, ensuring that no one could see his... He just realised that he wasn't wearing anything apart from that damned gown. 'Not good' he thought.
He knelt down beside her and checked her out. The girl had brunette hair that was long enough to trail down behind her neck. She looked like a cross between Sora and Mimi, but Kai wasn't aware of that.
In fact, he was hardly aware that he looked like a cross between Takato and Tai; specifically, he had Tai's hair and Takato's face. As far as he knew, he was individual and not related to any cartoon character from the late 20th Century to early 21st Century period.
The girl began to stir, as consciousness slowly took hold of her. Opening her eyes slowly, the girl looked up and saw the brown-haired teenager with brown eyes. Her pupils widened in fear, and she scrambled back away from him.
"It's okay," he said as reassuringly as possible. "I don't want to hurt you." Kai looked around him carefully. "It looks as if we're both in the same boat, so to speak." He turned back to face her and noticed the look of mistrust on her face. "My name's Kai," he said, extending a hand out in greeting to her. "Kai Matsuki. What's yours?"
"Fumiko," she stuttered nervously. For a while, there was silence, and then she decided she might as well give him her surname. He gave her his, after all. "Fumiko Ichijouji." A silent pause, as she recollected herself. "Where are we?" she asked him curiously.
Kai just shrugged his shoulders in reply.
"Not sure," was his reply. All he could tell was that they were in some padded cell. Whether they were still in Japan was another matter. "Last thing I remember was taking a short cut through the park back to my home. Next thing I knew, I was in here with you guys." That reminded him. He looked over to the two others that lay prone on the floor.
One of them looked like Ken Ichijouji from Season Two of Digimon, not that anyone in this world knew that. Only thing was, he had blonde hair instead of navy blue. The other person looked like Ryo Akiyama, but with black hair and a more sensible hairstyle.
"I wonder who they are?" Kai wondered out loud.
"I wonder why we're here?" muttered Fumiko, as she got up and walked around the padded cell. She craned her head upwards and saw a camera in the corner of the room. They were being watched and that unnerved her.
The woman had pink hair, and that was her most identifying quality. What does she look like, you ask? Imagine Yamaki from Digimon Tamers as a woman with pink hair and you'll have described her perfectly. She wore a navy blue cardigan with Chinese symbols sewn on to the breastpocket, characters translating roughly into English as 'Science'. She sat quietly in her chair, looking at papers through thin-rimmed spectacles.
"Oh, no!" she cried, she suddenly found out that she had spilled some coffee. She quickly grabbed some tissues and dabbed at the spill, desperately trying to prevent it from reaching her yellow blouse.
There was a knock from the door.
A soldier was standing at the doorway. She wore a burgundy-coloured military tunic with golden tassels on the shoulder pads of her tunic. This soldier wore white gloves, like all soldiers those days, and the collar of her military tunic was not folded over, and covered her neck. It was the norm of these days, as were probably the nearly knee-high black boots.
"Dr. Yamaki," addressed the soldier, "Lord Kaplan would like to see you in his office."
"Thank you for informing me, Lady Mimi," sighed the pink-haired female. "You may leave now, Captain Takenawa." Watching carefully, she watched as the EVA soldier left her office. "Damned woman," muttered Dr. Yamaki under her breath, as she rose from her seat.
"My name's Cody," replied the blonde-haired boy, as he looked at Kai. He had an American accent to his voice, which suggested that he wasn't from Japan. He looked towards the Ryo-look-alike, whom had introduced himself as Takeru Motomiya, then at Fumiko Ichijouji and Kai Matsuki. "I feel kinda awkward here," he said, "being the only American in this room. I don't know Japanese very well, you see, so..."
"No sweat," said Kai in perfect English. "Everyone on Earth is required to know English anyway, so what's the big deal?"
Fumiko began thinking quietly to herself. If there was an American there with them, it wasn't likely that they were still in Japan. Still, it wouldn't be likely that they were in America either.
"We're not in Japan, that's for sure," she said in Japanese, making Cody frown. "We're not in Pecunia either."
"Excuse me, but what exactly did you say?" Cody asked her.
Takeru quickly explained everything she said to him. He realised that she was right. They couldn't be in the Pecunia Conglomerate, which was what the United States was now called ever since the Pecunia Corporation took over.
"What does it matter where we are?" asked Kai, as he stood up, being careful not to expose his butt. Damned gown. "What we've got to do is bust out of here and find some decent clothes."
"Unless they put us here because we've gone mad," suggested Takeru unhelpfully.
Cody backed off away from Takeru. He certainly hoped that none of these people were mad. He knew that he definitely wasn't mad though.
Kaplan hadn't aged much since World War Three. In fact, he looked more or less the same way he did when he oversaw the rescue of those trapped in the bombed train station, only more mature. As always, there was a constant expression of sardonic amusement and detachment on his face, which was one of his trademark expressions.
"Dr. Yamaki," he began, addressing the pink-haired woman on the other side of his desk, "it has come to my attention that the cost of your DigiModification Project is costing me quite a bit of money, without actually showing any results."
"Your Excellency, that is what I was working on before you summoned me," began Yamaki respectfully. She handed a folder she was carrying to the tawny-haired soldier. 'I don't understand how this man could have become Head of the EVA Organisation' she thought to herself, as she stated, "This folder contains the results I have manged to obtain from my experiments. As you can see, it is now possible to create what could possibly termed as WereDigimon."
A frown broke his trademark expression.
"WereDigimon?" he asked.
"The technical term for them is DigiAnthropes," replied Dr. Sora Yamaki. "They are like... werewolves, only they do not turn into wolves, they turn into what could possibly be called Digital Monsters." A strange smile spread across her face. "I combined digital data with biological DNA in order to create this new species. The good thing about them is, that if they are killed in their Digimon forms, their bodies will break apart, and the data bound to the DNA will return to special Primary Stations where they will be reconfigured."
"So technically these DigiAnthropes of yours cannot die," suggested General Kaplan, as he looked through the results in the folder. "Am I right?"
Dr. Yamaki nodded in reply.
"As long as they do not die in their human forms," she added. The woman allowed a small smile to spread across her face. "They will be very useful in EVA's future operations, I can assure you."
For a while, nothing was said between them.
It was General Kaplan that broke the silence, after a long while.
"Your work is promising, Dr. Yamaki, but I have one worry," he said carefully, with a refined air about him. "These DigiAnthropes are mere human beings, at least mentally they are. Not all will welcome what they have become, and some may commit suicide. Others may take it in their powers to destroy us for what we've done to them."
"I assure you that no such thing will happen," stated Yamaki.
Sirens suddenly wailed throughout the entire office and the entire building.
Even in their cells, Kai and the others knew something was wrong. They could hear the sirens and the flashing lights were red, tingeing everything in its red colour. What they didn't know, like General Kaplan, was what exactly was going on around them.
Kai heard shouting outside and the firing of guns. What was going on? A revolution? He couldn't be sure, but he decided that it was best to back away from the door, as did the others. He looked on and listened in fear.
It was a good thing that they decided to back away from the door, though. Moments later, it was battered down. A soldier dressed in the black military of the EVA Organisation flew through the doorway and landed on the floor in front of them unconscious. Two more soldiers followed him, each smashing into the first. All three were unconscious, as Fumiko and company looked on.
"What the Heck is that?" exclaimed Cody, as he pointed at the doorway. What he saw was something strange and vaguely horrifying. He could swear that he saw what looked to be a lion, one that stood up with tattered cloth around its body. 'I don't want to die here like this' he thought, as he backed away into the padded wall.
The werelion- for lack of a better word- stared at them with sad eyes. It seemed to be staring through them and at their souls. Something made the creature turn around with shock. It lashed out at something behind him and there was a scream of fear.
Fumiko looked down and saw that the soldiers were still clutching on to their standard issue rifles. She tore one away from the soldier and aimed it at the creature, hoping that it was still loaded. 'This could be our chance to get out of here' she realised, as she aimed it at the thing. She cocked the gun, making a sound that the creature noticed.
Turning round, the creature looked at them.
"Don't shoot," he growled, much to their surprise. "I'm here to get you out of here."
Ms. Ichijouji was too shocked to do anything. The creature had talked! Or had she been hallucinating? Was Takeru right and were they really mad? This was probably evidence of it all. Something as bizarre as this couldn't possibly be happening. She dropped the gun, doubting its existence and that of the werelion.
"Takeru, I think you're right," she muttered. "We're all stark raving mad."
"The only mad ones around here are the scientists," growled the werelion. "Please. You have to trust me and follow me out of here. EVA wants to experiment on you, and I doubt you'd like their idea of experiments." He could still see the look of distrust in their eyes. "I don't know how I can make you trust me." An idea went through his head. "Take their uniforms. You can sneak out of here disguised as EVA soldiers."
"What are you"? asked Kai curiously. He was definitely sure that he wasn't mad or hallucinating.
"I was human like you once, before the EVA Organisation got a hold of me," sighed the creature. "You don't have much time left." He went out and then came back with an unconscious EVA soldier in his left paw. He threw the female soldier down. "Here. Take these uniforms. They should fit. Get out of here, while I cause a distraction." With that, he left.
Takeru looked towards Cody and the others before looking towards the unconscious soldiers. He heard Fumiko asking them whether they should trust the werelion.
"Who cares?" was his reply, as he bent down and started to remove the uniform from one of the soldiers. "That thing has given us a ticket out of here, and I'm taking it."
Dr. Yamaki ran through the corridors. 'How could this be happening?' she wondered to herself, as she ran, flanked by soldiers, down towards her laboratories. 'Security here at EVA Headquarters is anything but lax. Have I really managed to create a superior soldier?' She skidded to a halt and saw the werelion that had been the cause of all this commotion.
"Lieutenant Reynolds," she muttered under her breath, as she saw the werelion. "Get him!" she screamed. She watched as the soldiers flanking her rushed forward and then were swept aside by a powerful mass of energy shaped like the head of a lion. Sora ducked out of the way, narrowly missing the thing. "Get that WereLeomon!"
The WereDigimon rushed the soldiers, as they opened fire. Skilfully, he dodged the bullets and then swept his right paw out at the nearest soldier, knocking the rifle out of her hand. With a roar, he then flung his special 'Fist of the Beast King' attack at them. It hit the soldiers, and swept them right off their feet. It was then that he noticed the woman on the floor.
"Dr. Sora Yamaki," he growled, as he saw her. "You did this to me."
"That's right," agreed Sora, as she stood up. She tilted her head, like a curious dog would do. "And what are you going to do about it?" In one fluid motion, she brought out a gun and aimed it at the creature. "Tell me. What are you going to do about it, Lieutenant Reynolds?" A smug smile spread across her face, as she waited for his next move.
Lt. Reynolds heard another click. His keen leonine sense of smell told him that there was someone else behind him. Someone female.
"Don't move, kitty," warned Captain Takenawa, her gun aimed at the lion. "One false move and I'll blow a hole through your skull." A sharp pain shot through her neck and then everything went black.
Which is a fancy way of saying that she was knocked unconscious. Specifically, she was knocked unconscious by Fumiko Ichijouji.
Lt. Reynolds turned round and saw the four standing behind him, dressed in EVA uniforms, which fit them perfectly.
"What are you still doing here?" he asked them. "Go! Get out of here!"
"Not without you," protested Kai, who had been the one to suggest they help the WereDigimon. "We're helping you get out too."
An angry expression had spread across Yamaki's face.
"You fools!" she shouted, before pulling the trigger.
To be continued...
