Fox of Tao

(Chapter 5)

He watched as the boy and his beat-down fox digimon limped away...The failures of both Veemon and Wormmon annoyed him, but not too much. After all, they were only minions, and he could always get more. The useless pair got what they had coming.

Vyrus was but a shadow in the trees above the park, looking down at Arc and his bodyguard. He could have just cut the teen down with his back turned...but that would simply not be sporting. There would be a time and place for ruthless violence, and this simply did not fit. He had more pressing matters to deal with...

In a heartbeat, Vyrus had vanished, lost to the darkness.

When I got close enough to my house, I breathed a sigh of relief; my parents weren't home. I hadn't had the foresight to bring a disguise for Dynasty, and by the way she didn't, I could tell she didn't have the energy to teleport. I took the back way, away from the houses, and entered through the screen door into the living room.

It was dead quiet in the house, almost eerily so. I went over to the sofa, and Renamon dropped right onto it. Despite her usually composed nature, I could tell she was tired. Probably by the way she wasn't critiquing the state of the room. I walked to the far end of the couch, towards the mini-fridge.

"You know," I heard her say, so I looked up from the side of the couch. She was propped up on her elbows, looking at me. "I could use a blanket over here. It's cold." I reached over to the pile of blankets that was near the couch, and threw her a thick quilt. She caught it, and spread it over herself. "And a pillow."

"Needy?" I chuckled, and threw her a pillow.

"Not needy, just-" She got cut off, having to catch the pillow with her teeth again. Her voice was muffled, but I could make it out. "Hey, soft."

Since she seemed pretty content with what she had at the moment, I returned to the fridge, pulling out two cokes. I set one on the table, and kept the other one for myself. Dynasty's paw came out from under the big blanket. "C'mon..." I pleaded.

"Don't make me come out there." I sighed, and gave her the coke I had with me. It vanished beneath the quilt, quickly reappearing.

"What's wrong now?"

She hesitated in answering, but did so in sort of an ashamed voice. "I...can't get it open..."

I reached over and pulled the tab. "There."

The coke vanished back under the quilt. A few moments later, the paw reappeared, placing an empty can on the table gingerly. "...Thanks."

"Don't mention it." I grabbed the other coke, and pulled the tab on that one. A few moments later, there was a very muffled burp.

"...That was you."

((In the Digital Plane...))

He moved silently through seemingly crowds of digimon. They were everywhere...but it mattered not to him. He was had a job to do. He took a small piece of paper from his belt, and unfolded it... the place was around here, someplace. A few Agumon were stacking boxes where they had apparently fallen...not by accident, by the way the shards pointed.

Agunimon moved on, looking at the buildings intently; none of them seemed to be he one he wanted, none seemed to be even close. He replaced the sheet of paper, and pulled out a small circular device. It was beeping, and pointing in the direction he had been going for quite some time. While looking down, he bumped into something, but kept going.

"HEY." A loud voice boomed, but Agunimon kept walking. He had no such time for anyone who got in his way. "I'M TALKING TO YOU, BUDDY." He felt a claw on his shoulder, holding him in place. He turned around slowly, a BlackWarGreymon giving him a hating look.

"Can I help you?" The fire digimon said calmly. He didn't want to start anything, seeing as there was a large strength difference; he also did not want to be caught with a deletion rap.

"YEAH. YOU CAN EAT CLAW, PUNK!" The mega digimon drew his claw back, ready to tear through Agunimon. Deciding he would rather stay whole than keep a clean slate, Agunimon grabbed the BlackWarGreymon by the shoulders, his wrists pointing inward.

"Fire Darts!" The darts shot from his wrists, directly into the larger Digimon's neck, tearing it right off. He burst into data quickly. Agunimon shook his head, and turned around. "Idiot." A few digimon had noticed, and murmured quietly; it didn't matter much to him. If they had a problem, they could be deleted efficiently.

Agunimon took another look around... then his eyes brightened a bit. He walked slowly towards the small pub-looking establishment, pushing the door open. Behind the counter at the far side of the pub, was a blue, old-looking bug digimon. The Kabuterimon slowly turned around, the space being almost too small for him to fit.

"Eh...hello? Can I help you?" His voice sounded like he had seen many years...it was a shame what had to happen.

"Are you the Kabuterimon that owns this place?" Agunimon sternly asked, his eyes narrowed.

"Yes...Yes I am."

The fire digimon moved quickly to the back of the store, both arms raised. "That's too bad. FIRE DARTS!"

--

Agunimon walked slowly out of the building... a large blaze was shooting through the top. Fortunately for him, there were many oils in that place, and it fueled the blaze. He hardly broke a sweat.

"It's done." He called out. A shadow gathered a few feet away from him, defying the light that the blaze gave off. "Just in time to see the blaze."

Vyrus took a quick glance towards the pub...two light beams shot out of the blaze, and out into the sky. They were gone as soon as they came. The shadowed man clenched his fists, and turned towards the pyro digimon. "The paper."

Agunimon pulled out the piece of paper, unfolding it.

"What does it say at the bottom, in bold lettering?"

Agunimon's eyes traveled down to the bottom of the page. "Make sure to retrieve the other two D-Arcs." He looked up at Vyrus, whose arm was extended, gathering dark energy. "Please! An honest mistake!"

A black beam shot from the man's hand, tearing a hole right through Agunimon, his data fragments collapsing upon themselves. "Insolent fool, I do not tolerate mistakes!" He shot two more dark beams into the air in anger...Arc was not going to be his only problem now.
