Chapter 2: New Friend

Yamato didn't know how he got there, but before he knew it, he was standing in front of Taichi's door. And it wasn't like he just happened to go on the way home, it was clear on the other side of town. Yamato looked at the door. He wondered to himself why he was even there. He wasn't sure. All he knew was that from the second he had seen him, he was being drawn to him. He nervously knocked on the door. After a few seconds of waiting, Taichi came to the door.

“Who is it?” Taichi asked.

“I-It's Yamato.”

The door flew open. Taichi stood in the doorway with a huge smile on his face.

“Here I thought I made a bad impression on you. Come on in!” Taichi moved aside letting him know he was welcome.

Yamato walked into the apartment. It was small. There were still boxes of stuff sitting around like he just moved in.

“Taichi, where-”

“Yama, call me Tai.”

Yamato wasn't sure if he liked the nickname or not. “And you call me Matt.”

Tai nodded. “What were you asking?”

“Where are your parents?”

“They are back home. The school rented this apartment for me to stay at and gave me enough money for food, so I can live here without my family, and play soccer for them.”

Matt blinked. “You must love soccer to be able to stay away from your family like that.”

Tai shook his head. “I miss my little sister. But my mom and dad are... really homophobic. So I pretty much have to lie to them everyday. What are your parents like?”

“Same. Not that I talk to my mom that often... she and my dad are divorced. But neither one would be happy if they-- Wait! What are you doing to me?”

Tai looked confused at Matt who looked like he was going crazy.

“I barely even know whether I am gay or not, and you have me talking like I am!”

Tai just smiled. “All I'm doing is talking. This is a safe place. You don't have to worry about your parents here. I think you know that. I think thats why you just said that. Because you know you can be honest with me.”

Matt smiled a little. He wanted so badly to trust Tai. There was something about him that made him instantly likable.

Tai smiled at Matt. “So, you want to go out?”

Matt gasped in horror. “But I barely know you! I don't even know for sure who I am!”

“But what would be the best way to find out?”

Matt didn't have a response for that one.

“I was just curious as to what your reaction would be to that. I'm not going to ask that... yet. For now, are we friends?”

Matt nodded. “Yes, I think so.”

They both smiled.

Matt was curious. “Hey Tai, have you told anyone else that your gay?”

“Just the coach.”

Matt nodded, then looked at the clock. “Are you hungry Tai?”

Tai shrugged. “Maybe a little. But I've got some food here.”

Matt opened the cupboard to reveal nothing but bags of Ramen Noodles.

“You can't seriously live off this!”

Tai looked confused. “Why not?”

“Because! I mean, Ramen noodles are good, but that cant be ALL you want to eat.”

“It's all I can afford.”

“Then come on, I'm taking you grocery shopping, and then I'm making you dinner.”

Tai looked down at his shoes. “But I don't have any extra money.”

“I'm paying. I'm rich.”

Tai looked stunned. “What?”

“Well my father is, anyway. Come on, lets go.”

On the way to the store, Tai and Matt talked about things they liked. Anime, Games, then they got to Music.

“I can play guitar, Tai.”

“Really?”

“Yup.”

“Can you play me a song sometime?”

“Sure I can!”

Matt picked out lots of grocery's for Matt, and came home and cooked him a big meal.

“This dinner is Delicious Matt!”

Matt blushed. “Thank you Tai. I'm glad you enjoyed it.”

“Of course I did!”

Now they were just staring at each other. Almost like they wanted to kiss. When suddenly Matt looked at the clock.

“SHIT!”

“What's wrong?”

“I'm not home! And its 9! And I haven't called or anything! I gotta go Tai, I'm sorry!”

Tai shook his head. “No I'm sorry for getting you in trouble.”

“It's not your fault! Hey do you want to meet somewhere and walk to school in the morning?”

“I'd love to.” Tai said, “But I have soccer practice at 7 in the morning.”

“Eww. Okay, Another day then. See you at lunch?”

Tai smiled. “Of course.”

Matt smiled back and ran out the door. As Matt left, Tai felt like he had already scored the first goal in building a relationship with the guy of his dreams.

When Matt got home, his father was standing at the front door.

“WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?” His father yelled. “I'VE BEEN WORRIED SICK!”

Matt was a little surprised that his father was acting like this.

“I made a friend, went to his house, and just lost track of time.”

“OH? 'JUST' LOST TRACK OF TIME?”

“Okay so I'm REALLY late, I'm sorry.”

“YOU BETTER BE! DON'T EVER STAY OUT WITHOUT CALLING AGAIN!”

Matt walked past his father and up to his room. He laid on his bed thinking about Tai.

The next morning, Matt had no idea why, but he found himself at the soccer field at 8 AM. He sat in the bleachers watching Tai play. It was true that he didn't know much about sports, but he could see why Tai was transfered here. He was completely dominating the field. He did notice he was the only one there watching him, so he kept hidden. When the game was over Tai ran right over to him.

“Hey, watching me play?”

Matt blushed. “Yeah. You were really good.”

Tai smiled. “I know.”

Matt rolled his eyes.

Tai looked at him and smiled. “I've got to shower now. See you at lunch?”

Matt smiled and nodded, and Tai ran away.

At lunch Matt and Tai talked about all kinds of things, their family's, their likes and dislikes, turned out they had the same favorite band.

“Matchbox Twenty? Really? I thought I was the only guy in the world who liked them!”

Tai smiled. “Nope. I bet your favorite song of theres is Unwell.”

Matt blinked. “How did you know?”

Tai shrugged. “Lucky guess.”

Matt thought about it for a second, but then let it go again.

“What are you doing tonight?” Tai asked.

“Nothing. You?”

“Was going to ask if you wanted to come over again. You don't need to cook, I can cook something with what you bought me.”

Matt raised his eyebrow. “Oh, I'm a bad cook?”

“NO!” Tai said. “I just don't want you to think thats the only reason I want you to come.”

“I see. But why not come back to my house?”

Tai got a scared look in his eyes.

“No way.”

“Why not?”

Tai smiled suddenly. “Because, what if you dad suspected something?”

Matt blinked. “What are you talking about? Were only friends!”

Tai looked a little sad at this comment.

“I know that Yama,” Matt noticed the nickname again. “But whenever I brought a guy home my parents thought I he was more than a friend.”

“Thats too bad.” Matt said. “Sure, I'll come over.”

Tai smiled and nodded. “Good.”

As the bell rang, Tai put his hand over Matt's hand for just a moment, and with that moment, it was like electricity through Matt. His touch seemed so warm, familiar, and inviting. Matt suddenly felt like he was in a dream.
