Chapter Seven: Breaking the Ice

By KellyQ

The sun was starting to set as the three travelers made there way threw the forest. It wasn't long before it started to rain soaking the three kids as they went. Takuya put his arms around himself from keeping himself from shivering as the rain drops sunk into his raged clothes.

"I see a shack just up the road. We'll camp there for the night and continue in the morning." Kouji said.

Once they got inside, Kouji tossed the prince some clean clothes as Takuya started the fire. Takato walked in the other room and got dressed, then walked out to see the Knight sleeping on floor with a blanket draped over him and Takuya sleeping on the floor too with his wet clothes on shivering.

Takato immediately ran up and was about to pick Takuya up when Kouji opened his eyes sat up with a knife to the side of his throat.

"Touch him and I'll kill you!" He threatened.

".... He'll get sick or even worse if he stays in those drenched rages!"

"They'll dry." Kouji said simply.

"I don't understand you! You gave me dry clothes and you refuse to give Takuya dry clothes!"

"What's your point?"

"That Takuya is no different than you or me! Do you really want him to die or get ill?"

"He's just a slave. I can get a new one."

"That may be ... but you cannot replace Takuya. When he's gone .... he's gone. You cannot replace him!"

Kouji just sat there with great shock and realization in his eyes. Takato backed away saying that he was sorry for pushing a button of his. The Knight got up and walked out trembling a little; the prince sat on the bed feeling really bad that his words slapped him.

"huu .... what's going on?" Takuya asked sitting up rubbing his eyes. "Where's Kouji?"

"I was trying to convince him to be more considerate toward you .... and I said something that upset him. I'm sorry."

"What did you say?"

Takato just lowered his head with shame.

"You jerk! Do you realize what you've done?"

Takuya turned and ran out of the shack and found Kouji standing there in the rain deep in thought. Takuya slowly stepped up put his hand on his master's shoulder; he slowly turned, his eyes clouded over with confusion.

"You okay?"

Kouji turned and slowly reached out to touch Takuya face as it dropped to his chest. The slave stiffened and flinched when Kouji put his ear to his chest right where his heart was. What is he doing, Takuya thought as he felt Kouji's arms around him.

"Takuya, I'm sorry ...."

"Sorry for what?"

" ... Prince Takato made me realize something ...." Kouji said pulling the smaller boy to his chest, "that slaves are human like you ..."

"Do you know how long I've been wanting you to say that?" Takuya said in a scratchy voice.

"A long time I bet," Kouji said, "come on. I got some dry cloches inside."

Takato couldn't help but smile feeling much better that something came good out of it. He turned when both boy's walked in. Kouji got into his bag got out some dry clothes. Takuya was expecting his master to throw the clothes to him but Kouji walked out turned him around and said that he was going to help him get dressed. Takuya turned red in the face as they both walked in the next room closing the door behind.

************

Takato woke up by light or so he thought it was. He sat up to see to see Kouji putting some longs on the fire. He got up and sat next to the Knight who was looking sadly at the fire.

"You okay?"

"Yea ... just confused ...."

"What about?"

" ---- I'm not really confused ... just scared."

"There's no reason to be scared of love."

"There isn't?"

"Of course not. Love comes in all sorts of different ways."

"Oh."

There was silence between them.

"Takato .... I'll help you ...."

"You will? You'll help my parents except me?"

"Yes ... on one condition ..."

"Anything!"

"Just don't tell anyone about Takuya and I ... my parents will kill him and I'll be discarded from being a full Knight. I went threw a lot of work. To be honest, Takuya was the one who encouraged me to become one."

"Sounds like he really wanted what's best for you."

"Yes, and I didn't even notice ..."

"I did." Takato said looking at the fire.

"You did? How?"

"I could see it in his eyes that he cared about you ..."

Right then there was a loud disturbing knock on the door and a angry voice from the other side saying to open up.

"Shit! It's my father!"

"What are we going to do?" Takato whispered.

"Calm down. We'll sneak out the back window ..."

"Right."

Kouji went to go wake Takuya. Once they got to the window, they started to clime out and where immediately surrounded by more Knights.

"Consulting to help the enemy I see. I'm very disappointed in Kouji!"

"Father, Takato's not a bad person ... your the one who lied to me!"

Slap!

Kouji was on the wet ground.

"How dare you!" His father growled, "I raised you better than that! My son is not going to be come a fagot!"

"Don't listen to him Kouji-chan ..."

"I had enough of you!"

Kouji's father turned got out his sword and was about to strike when there was streak of pale white light hitting the blade causing the weapon to glow. Once the man dropped the sword, he turned to see a young boy with short blonde hair blue eyes clad in a blue robe.

"T.K.?"
