The Loss of Friendship! Noble Sacrifices

"Hey, hold on, kid!" PicoDevimon called to his partner. "Where're you goin'?"

Hiroshi paused, turning to look at the bat digimon flapping after him. "Noriko needs my help."

"Well, wait up, would ya?" the Child digimon panted. "No way I'd let you go alone!"

"The two of you aren't going anywhere," an older male voice declared. "Let my sister and her little pet cat get out of the hole they've dug themselves into. Let's see how resourceful they are without any outside help."

"Oh, come on, Kosaku," Kiyomi muttered, stepping into the hallway. "Let them go. Some of us actually care about the other members of the team." She fixed him with a glare. "Unlike you."

Kunemon cocked her antenna, regarding PicoDevimon curiously. "Do you want our help?" she asked.

"Nah," the other Virus replied. "We don't need baby-sitters. Me and Hiroshi here can handle the Holy Guardians on our own. Right, buddy?"

Hiroshi nodded silently.

Kiyomi put her hands on her hips. "Well, I don't like you two going off on a rescue mission on your own. If you need any help at all, let us know."

PicoDevimon smirked. "Sure, we will," he replied. "But with my higher forms, I doubt we'll need any. See ya!"

Takenouchi Sora, who was riding on Birdramon's back, glanced anxiously over at Miyako and Aquillamon, flying a short distance away.

Below them stretched the vast expanse of wasteland they had all seen from the top of the cliff. To the horizon, they could see nothing moving in all directions.

Their friends had all scattered to the four corners of the world on dangerous missions, and Sora had no idea how they were doing now.

She tilted her head back, looking up at the sky that was empty of clouds. Usually she could take pleasure from flying like this, with her friends, but it was different this time.

*We could die here...*

That thought was definitely unwelcome, and she pushed it away.

"Hey, Sora?" Miyako asked suddenly.

The red-haired girl turned her attention to her girlfriend, grateful for the distraction. "Yes?"

"What're we going to do with those kids once we defeat their digimon? We can't...kill them...can we?"

"Miyako, I...I don't want to say it..." Sora paused to regain her composure. "But we might have to."

"Let's just wait until we actually win that battle," Aquillamon put in, "before we make any kind of decision as serious as that."

Inoue Chizuru was bored.

She'd never been very interested in math; she had always considered herself to be more creative then academic. She enjoyed making things with her hands, like the life-size clay sculpture she was working on.

She tapped one foot against the floor, trying to stifle a yawn as the teacher continued droning on about whatever; she wasn't really paying attention.

She turned to look out the window, watching two distant black specks circling high over the city. She had always been slightly jealous of her younger sister; Miyako knew how it felt to fly, and Chizuru had never gotten that opportunity.

*When she and Hawkmon get back from the Digital World, I'll have to ask them if I can go for a ride with Aquillamon...*

Her daydream was interrupted by frightened exclamations from the other students around her. She turned to look out the window again, and was greeted with the image of two digimon she didn't recognize.

One was a large black dragon with tattered wings and four eyes; and the other looked like a black Birdramon. They were attacking the city.

Dark red beams of energy burst from the black dragon's claws, while black spheres of fire rained down from the black Birdramon's wings.

Chizuru stood up abruptly, knocking her chair over in the process. She continued to watch as helicopters positioned over the two digimon, and gunmen take aim at them.

"WHAT?!" she cried out involuntarily. *They can't do that! There are two children with them!*

***

The Chosen's voices were hushed as they discussed the little dark-haired girl and her partner digimon. BlackTailmon was keeping watch over Noriko, the firelight reflecting in her yellow eyes.

"Give her something to eat," the black cat demanded suddenly. "She hasn't eaten since yesterday evening."

Takeru glared at her and started to shake his head, but Hikari held out a candy bar she had been eating slowly. This might be her rival, but she could never let another person go hungry while she had food.

BlackTailmon took it with a quick snatch, then handed it to her human. "Here, 'Riko."

Wormmon placed his two front pods on Tailmon's leg, leaning up to whisper in her ear. "I never thought I'd see LadyDevimon, in any of her forms, being kind to anyone."

Tailmon nodded in agreement. "She was one of the most selfish people I ever had the misfortune of meeting. I would have thought she'd keep at least at part of that chocolate for herself, but she gave it all to that girl. How strange."

***

Devidramon and Sabirdramon swooped out of the line of fire, their small charges clinging to them as they did so.

Together, they landed near a stand of trees in the park. Immediately, they were faced a group of humans dressed in blue, pointing strange-looking weapons in their direction.

Devidramon snarled at them, while Sabirdramon cawed with laughter. "No flimsy human-made weapons can hurt us!" she crowed.

One of the humans, one who Sabirdramon thought must be female, responded by firing the gun at her. The bullet exploded in the black fire shrouding her body.

"It's been fun," Sabirdramon called down. "But this game is over!"

The adult humans covered their eyes as the two digimon were enveloped in bright red auras and shrank. The red lights faded away to reveal a pair of Child digimon.

The police officers gaped as two children, both of them no older then six, ran over to the two digimon. The woman Sabirdramon had addressed before called out to them. "Stay back! They could be dangerous!"

The boy reached out and hugged a digimon who resembled a flying monkey; the girl picked up a bird-like creature with scales and fangs.

The bird-creature laughed as it addressed the little girl. "She thinks we're dangerous, Kyari! She's smarter then she looks!" It turned to glare at the older humans. "Fortunately for you, we have to go home now!"

***

Tailmon's ears flattened as she caught a semi-familiar scent on the wind as it blew through the clearing where they were resting. "Devimon is here."

Noriko and BlackTailmon looked up, and a slow smile formed on the Virus's face. "It certainly took them long enough," she muttered.

Meanwhile, Takeru and Patamon turned toward Tailmon. "Where is he?" the blond-haired boy asked, fists clenching.

"He's close, and-"

"Death Claw!"

The black beam of energy was not aimed to injure, but to scatter. The Chosen dove out of the way, except for Tailmon, who stood her ground.

"I'll hold him off for now, but the rest of you will have to evolve!" she called.

In a white blur, Tailmon leaped directly up into the air, bounding off a tree-trunk to gain momentum. In mid-air, she spun to face her opponent, aiming her fist at Devimon's face. "Cat Punch!"

He easily knocked her from the air. "You weren't able to fight me in this form before, Tailmon," he said. "And although we are at the same stage now, you still have no chance!"

"I've never fought you! What are you talking about?"

Devimon smirked. "I don't think you want to know. But you will, unless you let Noriko and BlackTailmon go."

"Not a chance!" Takeru shouted.

"Fine, then." Devimon turned to look down at the young dark- haired boy half-hidden by the undergrowth. "Hiroshi?"

The Crest hanging around the little boy's neck flared with a dark purple light that wrapped around Devimon's body.

"NO!" Takeru shouted.

"Devimon, super evolve..."

His arms shortened, and his wings disappeared. His horns shrank into his skull, and the black hood-mask covering his head was replaced by a red mask. An outfit of blue cloth covered his body, while a black cloak fell from his shoulders. His hair darkened from white to blond, and his eyes changed from red to blue.

"...VAMDEMON!"

It was Tailmon's turn to scream as she realized what Devimon had meant. "Not YOU!"

He moved quickly, and was at Hikari's side before anyone could do anything to stop him. Her eyes widened in fear as his hand closed around her neck.

Tailmon gave a snarl of anger and crouched, her muscles tensing as she prepared to attack her old enemy.

"Stay where you are," he said warningly, as his grip tightened. "Or I'll crush her throat."

The Adult feline digimon froze, glaring helplessly. "Let her GO!"

Vamdemon laughed. "And why should I do that? I enjoy seeing her like this. Besides, this gives me an opportunity I cannot refuse."

"What do you mean?" Ken asked, angry tears forming in his eyes.

"How does the human expression go?" The demon man paused. "'To kill two birds with one stone.'"

Ken frowned. "I don't understand," he said.

"Oh, I didn't expect you to," Vamdemon replied. "It will be obvious soon, though."

Anger took hold of Tailmon's heart. "Stop it! Stop hurting her!" she cried, rage blazing in her eyes. "You know who your REAL enemy is, Vamdemon," she hissed, extending her claws threateningly.

The Perfect digimon smiled cruelly. "Very well." He released Hikari, who immediately put both hands to her throat, staggering away.

Instantly, the Guardian of Light flung herself at Vamdemon in a blind rage, her speed turning her into a bolt of white lightning.

The demon digimon stepped back, but that wasn't enough to prevent her claws from raking across his arm. His hand lashed out, knocking her away with a vicious backhand. "This problem is easily remedied. What would you say if I sent you to join your old lover, Wizarmon?" He approached her, forcing her to back away.

"Stay AWAY from her!" Hikari cried out, taking a step toward her partner.

Vamdemon's gaze turned back to her. "I spared your life. I would not throw it away so quickly if I were you."

Tailmon's fists clenched, her eyes closing for a moment. Then she looked up, her gaze hardening. "Leave. Her. ALONE."

"I will," the dark digimon replied. "I can't say the same for you, however. Dead Scream!"

The cloud of black energy slammed into Tailmon, tossing her back, smashing her into a tree.

"Bloody Stream!" Vamdemon called, two red energy whips forming in his hands. He used them to repeatedly strike Tailmon's unconscious form, only stopping when the blood from her wounds turned her fur dark red.

Hikari fell to her knees, tears flowing freely from her eyes. "TAILMON!"

"You'll PAY for that, Vamdemon!" Stingmon shouted.

"Stingmon, super evolve..."

His body lengthened, and the lance mounted on his wrist disappeared. Much of the armor covering his body dissolved away, and his insectoid hands formed into reptilian ones, tipped with sharp claws.

"...DINOBEEMON! Hell Masquerade!" He spread his wings, bolts of bluish-white power shooting toward Vamdemon.

Meanwhile, Hikari had raced to her partner's side, ignoring the battle taking place in the air. She gathered Tailmon's limp body in her arms, oblivious to the blood. "Tailmon, wake up! You're going to be okay! Say something! Tailmon?"

The cat digimon twitched and forced her eyes open, smiling weakly at Hikari. She put one paw to the girl's face. "Don't cry, Hikari. I love you...and I'm glad you're all right." Her eyes closed again, her paw falling to her side.

"Tailmon? TAILMON, PLEASE DON'T DIE! PLEASE!" Tears spilled from Hikari's eyes as she hugged her partner's body to her chest. But she was soon holding nothing as Tailmon's body disintegrated and blew away on the wind. "NO!!!! TAILMON!!!!!!!!!"

Responding to the horrified scream, DinoBeemon turned to look in the brown-haired girl's direction just in time to see his friend die. His fiery temper took over, erasing all rational thought from his mind. All he knew was that this demon had killed his Tailmon. And he would pay for it with his own death.

"MURDERER!!"

Meanwhile, BlackTailmon had taken advantage of the confusion and horror caused by her rival's death and retrieved Noriko's Crest and digivice, returning them to her.

She gave a scream of joy as she felt the power of Darkness flow through her body. "BlackTailmon, super evolve..."

Her small body reshaped into the form of a humanoid woman. A torn black leather dress formed on her body, while two black high-heeled boots formed on her feet. A chain wrapped around her right arm, and her left arm became hugely out of proportion to the rest of her body. Sharp red claws grew from her left hand, and two tattered, stormy-grey wings grew from her back. Her eyes turned from yellow to red, glaring out from beneath the hood-mask that now covered her head and most of her neck. Long, grey hair flowed down her back.

"...LADYDEVIMON!"

The demon woman wrapped her arms around Noriko's waist, keeping a firm hold on her. "Here we go!" she called out as she rocketed half a mile into the sky in a few seconds. "We should be far enough away now." She raised her voice, calling down to her male counterpart. "Hey, handsome, get up here!"

Five seconds later, Vamdemon appeared next to her, grasping his own human in his arms. LadyDevimon grinned, glancing over at him. "Ready?"

"Of course. Night Raid!" A flock of bats spiraled down to explode against the ground where the Chosen were standing. Both demons could hear faint screams drifting up on the wind.

LadyDevimon shifted her human charge to her right arm, and raised her left hand over her head. "Darkness Wave!"

Her own dark power combined with Vamdemon's to create a massive explosion that blew away everything within a quarter mile of it.

Hikari looked up through the globe of protective energy the digivices had surrounded them with. She watched the two Perfect demon digimon, who were now nothing more then dark specks, disappear from view.

"Oh, god," she whispered as she looked around. "Our friends...they're all dead." She closed her eyes, tears leaking from under her eyelids. "Everyone...I'm so sorry."

Takeru dug his D-terminal from his pants pocket; the reality of what had just happened hadn't sunk in yet. "I...I'd better let the others know."

***

Miyako looked down as her D-terminal started beeping loudly. "Oh, what NOW?" she muttered irritably as she flipped it open.

Sora looked up as she heard her girlfriend utter a small scream of horror and drop the messenger device as if it had suddenly turned into a snake. "What's wrong?"

"Oh, shit..." Miyako took several deep breaths to steady herself. "I just got an email from Takeru. Oh, god...Sora, they're....they're..."

Sora grasped the girl's shoulders. "Miyako, calm down and tell me what happened."

The younger girl gulped and continued. "Wormmon, Patamon, V-mon, and Tailmon are all dead."
