Chapter 3

~*~ Restaurants and Revelations ~*~

I stood there for about thirty minutes, blankly staring at the mirror. I looked like a penguin. A first date, if even that, and I look like a freaking penguin. Father walked up beside me. He fixed my tie, gave me one of those knowing glances, and then walked back into the kitchen. Ah, father and son bonding, there's nothing else like it.

The door bell rang.

I did one last hair check. I've never been so pre-occupied by my looks. I guess when a girl is involved…

The bell rang again.

"I'll get it!" Shaochung chirped running towards the door. She started to open the door. It was 1/3 of the way open when I gently shoved Shaochung out of the way and greeted a classy looking Ruki at the door.

I just stared.

"Wow…" I said in a sighing manner.

"Hi." Was all she said in response.

"You look…"

"Like a girl? Yeah I know. My mom said it to me already." Ruki said cutting me off.

"Well yeah, but.. NO! Wait that's not what I meant. I was gonna say you look nice." There goes the other foot into my mouth. Geez I'm on a roll today, I thought.

She just raised an eyebrow.

"You look nice too." She started to giggle.

"What? What's so funny?"

"Sorry, Ok. I'm better." Ruki said composing herself. "It's just that… you look like a penguin…" She said bursting into another fit of laughter.

"Gee, thanks." I said grabbing my coat. "So where are we going?" I asked as we headed out the door.

"Oh, some fancy-schmancy, penguin restaurant… you'll fit right in Jen." She giggled yet again.

"Whatever."

We got to the restaurant. Another "penguin" escorted us to our table. We were seated.

"So…" Ruki said looking slightly uncomfortable.

"Did you purposely plan this Ruki?" I said with out thinking.

"What?" She uttered in shock.

"Oh geez. I did it again." I said burying my face in my left hand.

"Jen… what is going on with you? You've been acting really weird lately. Are you sure you're ok?" Ruki said. Her tough girl exterior was softened by her concern and make-up.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I lied. I was burning up. It was too hot in there. Especially in this stupid penguin suit. I felt a little weak. "Actually to be completely honest with you… I feel like crap. I haven't been getting any sleep, and what little I have been getting has been disturbed by nightmares and Shaochung waking me up so she can play with Terriermon." I sighed. "It's just … one thing on top of another."

"Jen, you do look tired. Maybe we should start calling you `Jennie, the Narcoleptic Penguin." She said giggling.

"I'm serious, Ruki!" I proclaimed. I lowered my voice. "I mean it Ruki. I'm dead serious about this. I'm really having a tough time. You have no idea what I'm going through. No idea."

"Jen… I'm sorry. I really am…" She paused. "These nightmares. What are they about?"

"If you don't want to tell me I understand. Dreams are---"

"I'm walking through this graveyard…"

I proceeded to tell her about the dream. She was silently listening nodding her head occasionally to let me know that I still had her attention.

"That's creepy, Jen. How long has this been going on?" She asked. She rested her elbows on the table and her head was cradled in her hands.

"Three weeks."

"You poor thing."

The waiter came to take our orders. I ordered the rarest steak they could make with out me getting sick. Ruki got hers well done.

We had small talk until the steaks arrived.

My steak was extra juicy. It looked so good. I couldn't help but to dig in.

Ruki just stared at me as I nearly abandoned all humanity. I didn't care. I was hungry. I had lost myself in the juicy, tender, sirloin steak.

"Jen, your silver ware is beside you." She said while staring at me.

"Eh? Oh, yeah." I said wiping my hands onto my napkin.

"Jen… are you alright? I've never seen you do that." Ruki said surprised at my actions.

"Sorry. I don't know what happened. It's just everything I've eaten for the past 2 weeks hasn't satisfied me. I'm still hungry no matter how much I eat. This is just hitting the spot perfectly." I turned red. "I think I screwed up didn't I?"

"Jen… I'm just getting concerned. Thank God my mother wasn't here to see this. Oh by the way, she's paying for the meal so its all good." She said to change the subject.

We got our bill and left the restaurant.

We finally reached her house.

"Ruki… I…" * I'm not very good at this *

She leaned over and gave me a quick kiss on the lips.

"We really need to do this more often, Jenrya. I actually enjoyed myself." Ruki said hanging half way out the door. "Oh and thanks for the study session. Sweet dreams."

"Ja ne…"

"Ja ne."

… Wow.
