Chapter Four: Return of the Kaiser

Ken just stared at Taichi, stunned by the events that had just transpired. The brunette had followed him to his secret place and offered to become his constant companion, which would most likely create a gap between him and the other Digidestined.

Not only that, but he had agreed to be his companion knowing that Ken had chosen to become the Digimon Kaiser again. The boy genius didn't quite know how to take this.

Taichi broke the silence first. "I guess we should probably let the others know what's up before we get started, huh?" Ken just nodded in silent agreement. Standing, they left the small copse of weeping willows and headed back to the others.

Before they got very far away from the Heart of the Forest, they felt a chill creep up their spines as a great source of evil approached. Ken shot a panicked look at his companion. "It's the Darkness again," he whispered. Taichi nodded his understanding, and they both paused, realizing the futility of trying to outrun the dark.

As it had before, the Mother Darkness caught them and wrapped them in its embrace, sealing them away from the rest of the world. You have chosen, it hissed, not bothering to make it a question. Ken nodded in acquiescence anyway. Then you may not return to the others. It cannot be allowed, the Darkness continued.

Surprisingly, it was Taichi who protested. "But you told Ken that he could notify the other Chosen of what happened and why he was doing this." The Darkness replied softly, And he can, but he must notify them as the Kaiser. There is not time to waste.

"How do I do that?" Ken asked. "Once they find out that the Kaiser is back, they will not listen. Not true, assured the Darkness. There is one who will listen, one who has always listened. "Daisuke," Ken whispered.

Taichi looked over at him in surprise as the Darkness made a sound of confirmation. Ken caught his look and answered the unspoken question. "Daisuke was the first one to reach out towards me. He was the one who refused to let me sink into depression, and who understood, more than anyone else. He's my best friend." Taichi nodded in understanding.

Now, interrupted the Darkness, are you ready? Ken swallowed and closed his eyes, nodding quickly. He felt a mild vibration and the Darkness retreated. Opening his eyes, he found himself back in one of his old bases, repaired from the damage it had suffered in an attack by the Digidestined. He was dressed back in the Kaiser outfit, from his spiked hair to his visor to his cloak. Even the heavy cuffs were back around his ankle.

Looking to the side, he saw Taichi laying there, eyes closed. Slowly, the older boy opened his eyes………and freaked when he saw the Digimon Kaiser staring down at him. "K-ken?" he choked out. The ruler just nodded and removed his visors, allowing Tai to see his indigo eyes, as well as the sorrow in them.

Sighing in relief at the emotion he found in the younger boys gaze, he calmed down and looked around the room. Judging by the dozens of screens and the elegant chair situated in the middle of the room, he guessed that he was in the base's control room.

Once Ken was assured that the older boy wasn't going to panic and attack him, he turned towards the screens. Pausing, he realized that their Digimon weren't there. "Wormmon? Agumon?" he called. The two partners suddenly materialized in the doorway.

"You called, master?" asked Wormmon. Ken blinked, then shuddered. "No, no, Wormmon. It's just Ken. No master, no Kaiser, just Ken, or Ken-chan, all right? I'm not going back to that monster I was," he promised.

Wormmon relaxed immediately and waddled over to Ken, allowing himself to be picked up. Agumon headed over to Taichi, who grabbed him into a large hug. The two boys explained to their partners everything that had happened, and the two Digimon swore to support their human companions, no matter what.

Satisfied, Ken headed back towards his throne, pausing long enough to summon a comfortable chair for Taichi. Setting Wormmon in his lap, he proceeded to sweep the Digital World, hunting for one thing in particular. When asked by Taichi what he was searching for, he replied softly, "I'm searching for the one Digidestined we have a chance of explaining this to."

Taichi just nodded and settled back, watching as Ken swiftly located the Digidestined at their picnic site. Once they were found, the Kaiser sat back in his throne to wait. Seeing Taichi's confused look, he grinned. "I can't just go and kidnap him from the group, Tai-chan. I have to wait until he's alone with Veemon." Understanding dawned on the brunette's face, and Ken found himself chuckling.

The Goggle Boy just smirked at him and resumed watching the screen. Shortly afterwards, their opportunity came. Daisuke, wondering where his best friend and his predecessor had gone to, excused himself from the group and went off in search of them, using his D3 to locate Ken and hoping that Tai was with him.

Back at the base, Ken sighed, catching his companion's attention. Indigo eyes stared into chocolate orbs as he told Taichi what he was thinking. "We need to get him here without anyone becoming suspicious," he began. "In order to do that, we need him to come willingly, but we also need him to turn his D3 off."

Taichi nodded, seeing the logic in that. Then he caught on. "You want to send me to get him, since he trusts me and I appear as myself, whereas you look like the Kaiser." Ken just nodded. Sighing, the taller boy agreed to collect Daisuke and headed off, riding on Greymon's shoulder.

Ken continued to observe on his screens as Tai met Daisuke and spoke to him quickly. Nodding, the smaller brunette turned off his D3, and followed Tai's lead back to the base. When they approached the base, Dai shied back, but at his idol's encouraging words, he summoned up his courage and entered the base.

Tai led the younger boy and his Digimon directly to the control room, where Dai had very much the same reaction as Tai had when they first arrived. Once again, Ken removed his visors and spoke softly. "Don't worry, Dai-kun," he began, trying to soothe his best friend. "I brought you here so that I could explain what's going on."

When Daisuke opened his mouth to comment, Ken held up his end, asking for silence. When the soccer child granted his request, he answered the unspoken question. "We were told that we could inform the rest of the Chosen about what has happened, but we did not have time to beforehand. And I could not simply appear in front of all the Digidestined children, because they would not listen. That's why we brought you here."

Daisuke thought about this, then grinned, accepting his explanation. "You brought me here because you knew I was the one who would most likely listen first and judge later, right?" Ken smiled back at him, and nodded. "Quite perceptive there, Dai-kun."

With that out of the way, Ken and Taichi proceeded to explain all that had happened, from the choice give to Ken to Taichi's request to their appearance here in the base. When they were done, silence enveloped the room, as Daisuke thought about all they had said.

"All right," he said finally. "I'll let the others know what's up, but they're going to want proof of some sort." Ken and Taichi just nodded. "Let me come here again, more than once. Each time I'll bring another Digidestined with me, just one other, so that they can judge for themselves that you're not doing anything wrong. I'll bring the older ones first, since us younger Digidestined look up to them so much," he said, shooting a grin at Taichi.

Ken nodded his head, agreeing, then they both said their farewells to Daisuke, as he climbed onto Raidramon's back and left the base, waiting until he was close to the others before turning his D3 back on. They didn't have to worry about Daisuke giving away the location of their base.

The Kaiser and his companion watched as the other Digidestined gathered around Daisuke, questioning him. The boy just shook his head and assured them that he'd explain everything later, and that Ken and Taichi weren't coming back anytime soon, and that they were all right. With that, he headed for the nearest portal to the real world, and the others followed, still shooting questions at him.

Taichi grinned at his boyfriend and murmured, "Now what?" The Kaiser just looked at him and smirked. "Now we have some fun of our own," he purred, standing up and leading Taichi out of the control room, leaving their Digimon partners to entertain themselves.

Raven: Whoohoo! *holds up Tai and Ken banner* We did it!

Kagome: Yeah, we did. Now the Kaiser is back, joined by his companion and their Digimon.

Raven: Oooh! I wonder what kind of fun they're going to go have? *wink, wink*

Kagome: If people review, they'll find out. Of course, they could always just use their imaginations too, ne?

Raven: ………Nah! Read and review, please. It's worth it!
