Tai's lips were incredibly soft against mine and for a second I thought I felt my best friend kiss me back, but then he froze up beneath me and I realized exactly what it was I had just done and who it was I was kissing.
I let go of our leader and took a step back, looking to see if anyone had seen what had happened. Everyone seemed to be too busy checking on their digimon to have noticed, everyone but Hikari and Sora that is, the former grinning at us like a fool and the latter standing there dumb founded.
"Great," I mumbled under my breath. Of all the people to have seen is it had to be Tai's little sister and the bearer of love.
"Hey, uh, Matt?" Tai said from his place in front of me. At this point Sora and Kari were the least of my worries. Right now I had to deal with my stupid actions.
"Uh, yeah?" I replied, unable to look up at Tai. I was probably the darkest shade of red it was possible for a person to be at this point and I didn't want him to see that if at all possible. Now if I could just ignore the fact that when I blush my ears turn red as well I'd have a great plan right there.
"What the hell was that about?" he asked. I risked a glance up. He too was looking at the ground, probably embarrassed by the fact that another guy had kissed him. From the conversation we had had earlier I was pretty confident that he was at the very least bi, but that didn't mean he wanted anything to do with me, or that he wanted to be kissed in public like this.
"Uh, I kind of got caught up in the moment. I was worried about all of you and you were the first person I saw, so..." This was the most awkward conversation I had ever had. Why did I have to try and figure out who his crush was today of all days? Why did he have to be such a terrible liar that I knew he liked guys? Why had Illusiomon chosen me specifically? I sighed mentally. There was no way I was going to figure this out. I finally gathered the courage to look at Tai. He chose the same time to look at me and our eyes caught. I couldn't help but look in to them and what I saw surprised me. There was desire in his eyes. I blinked, half-hoping that I was wrong, but it was still there.
I resisted the urge to kiss him again and instead turned away, saving the little piece of information for another time. "Let's go check on our siblings, make sure they're all right."
I'm not sure if Taichi nodded or not, but he followed after me towards his sister, who, as always, were not far from each other's sides and currently had two digimon fussing over them, switching back and forth between the two chosen.
"Are you ok?"
"You didn't get hurt, did you?"
"The ropes weren't too tight? They didn't make you bleed or cut off circulation?"
The two digimon were asking questions so fast that there was no time for the two to answer them, not that Gatomon and Patamon seemed to care. They were personally checking their partners by flying and crawling all over them.
"Ok, enough," Takeru said. There was only so much babying one man could take.
"We're fine. I don't have a scratch on me, what about you Hikari?"
"No, I'm fine. There wasn't a whole lot of time to get damaged in the whole thing." Patamon and Gatomon looked at each other, then stalked off together. They were still getting used to the fact that their partners were no longer the eight year old kids they first met.
"So, we were going to see if you guys were ok, but I think we had some people beat us to it."
Kari laughed. "Yeah, our own personal traveling mothers."
"Yup, it never fails, if we could be wounded they're on top of it," Takeru added.
We stood there for a minute in an awkward silence, one my brother seemed oblivious to. He was oblivious to a lot of things, such as his girlfriend's inner battle with the darkness... But that was none of my business. Tai had tried to help and she blocked him out, so there was no way she was going to let me in.
"So, Tai," Kari said, trying to be casual, "I need to talk to you about something, alone."
Tai glared at his sister and Kari glared back at him. I hate to break it to my best friend, but Yagami Hikari is way scarier than he will ever be. Not wanting to be caught in the middle of that I turned to walk away.
"I'm going to go find Gabumon," I said, right before a hand came out and grabbed my collar.
"Nope. I need to talk to you, alone," a female said behind me. I turned to see Sora, the only chosen scarier than Kari.
"Where the hell did you come from?" I asked, surprised she had caught me before I could escape somewhere with my wolf friend and play some harmonica and think before I had to give her answers.
"You see, when a man and a woman have feelings for one another..." she started.
"I get the picture," I said gruffly, "Now's not a good time, you see Gabumon and I have a with a fire and a harmonica, also alone."
"Well, you're just going to have to reschedule, because you have an appointment with me now." I looked to my little brother to help and he just shrugged. Brat.
Sora drug me away by my collar and only let me go when we were out of earshot from everyone else.
"What were you thinking?" she hissed at me. I cringed. Sora only hissed when she was really angry.
"I thought that it was pretty obvious that I didn't think," I growled back after a second.
Why it was any of her business when I made stupid fucked up mistakes I still had yet to figure out.
"Yeah, I was pretty sure about that. I know taking the direct approach with Taichi is the best, but don't you think that this may be a little too direct?"
I glared. "What makes you think that it was anything more than an 'Oh god, I thought I was going to have to kill you, but it turns out I didn't and now I'm so relieved' kiss?"
Sora just looked at me. "What crest is it that I have Ishida Yamato?"
I sighed and sat down on a nearby rock, putting my head in my hands. "I just did it. I was terrified I was going to have to hurt one of you and when I saw Tai standing there I just grabbed him and kissed him like I've wanted to for years now..."
Sora took pity on me and sat down next to me, putting her arm around me.
"Its was also kind of because of this conversation we had when we were running earlier," I admitted. I didn't want to betray Tai's confidence, but with how close he was to her it was doubtful that he'd mind.
"A conversation? About what?"
"I was trying to get his attention, but he was zoned out. When I finally did I made a few jokes about him thinking about food and soccer. He said he wasn't, so I told him that left one thing, girls and wanted to know who it was. He shrugged it off, so I asked him who the guy was, as a joke. He got really nervous and started rambling on about how there was no guy and that he, Yagami Taichi, did not like guys. You know, the stupid way he acts when he's lying. It kind of gave me hope."
Sora rolled her eyes. "Of course he did. I'm not sure how he ever gets away with anything. That boy is a terrible liar. I'm almost surprised he lied to you about it though. Maybe you should talk to him about it."
A blush crept across my face at her suggestion. "No, no no. I'm perfectly fine not talking to him about this. Pretending it never happened and all. Save him and I the embarrassment of the whole 'it was nothing' conversation and having to hear that he doesn't like me like that and all."
I heard a snort from next to me and looked up sharply. "This isn't funny you know. These are my feelings we're talking about."
"Yes, I know. Not funny. I seriously don't think that that is what's going to happen though. Tai's probably over the moon right now, that is if he's not doing the same thing you are and doubting what just happened."
I thought about what she said for a minute. "You're wrong. There's no way you're possibly telling the truth. I've watched him stare at the girls in class."
"Are you sure? He sleeps through most of his classes.”
“Yes, I’m absolutely sure because I was staring at him. His eyes were wide open.”
“And? Tai can sleep with his eyes open. He can even hold conversations when he’s asleep. He’s perfected the art of sleeping in class.”
I rolled my eyes. Of course Tai had perfected sleeping in class. He was too busy playing video games and watching tv all night to sleep then.
"I still don't believe you. He's the high schools head jock of the school. The head jock can't be gay."
"That's such crap Matt. Tai's not just the head jock, he's a chosen and as a chosen he can be whoever he wants. Plus, aren't jocks supposed to be incredibly stupid and sleep with every girl in the school?"
"So he has some morals and he just hasn't found the right girl yet. He wants it to be special. He is a chosen. Finding someone to get close to isn't going to be easy for us unless we get together with someone who is chosen. We have a bond with each other that's closer than a lot of people who are married."
She shrugged. "I'll give you that, but you're still wrong. Taichi is in love with you and he has been since you were little."
"Have you ever asked him or are you going off of your 'intuition'? I'm sorry if I sound a little cynical, but I don't exactly trust your intuition, its not exactly like you've dated anyone."
She recoiled from my words, obviously stung by them. "Fine, if you don't believe me then you can just carry on without him. It doesn't affect me at all." With that Sora stormed off and I cursed. There may have been some truth to Gabumon's celestial form. Ever since he had digivolved it seemed like I had made one mistake after another.
Speaking of the little blue wolf, I needed to find him. With everything that had happened in the aftermath of the battle I had yet to see him and some time away with my best digital friend might help me figure out what was going on in my head. I went to stand up and jumped a foot in the air. The little guy was right in front of me.
“Sorry to scare you. Is everything ok, Matt? Sora seemed pretty angry when she walked past,” he asked.
“No, let’s go take a walk. I need some time to think.”
---
Three hours later Tai found Gabumon and I out on the island. I was playing harmonica and my digimon was passed out next to the fire we had made. He woke up at Tai’s noisy approach and scampered off towards camp. I sighed. No one was going to save me from my fellow chosen today.
Tai sat down next to me. I ignored him and continued on playing the harmonica. There was no way I was going to speak first. If he really wanted to have this discussion then he’d have to be the one to get it started.
We sat there for five minutes, neither of us speaking, the only noise being from my harmonica playing. I paused for a second to catch some air and Taichi set in on me.
“Hey, Matt?”
I sighed. “Yes Taichi?”
“I wanted to talk about earlier. I, um, why did you do that?” He was nervous and it would have been cute if I hadn’t been about to bolt.
“Like I said earlier, it was an accident. I was just so happy to see you all ok,” I told him, hoping he’d believe me better this time than last time.
“You’re lying,” he said simply. I growled. I didn’t want him to know I was lying.
“Kind of like you did this morning when I asked you who the lucky guy was?” I stood up. I wanted to be no where near here. Why had Gabumon had to leave? Tai probably would have asked him to anyways, but it would have been easier to escape if he hadn’t.
“Yes.” I stopped and spun around in a flash. That wasn’t the answer that I was expecting to get from him. I was expecting another rendition of the Taichi-is-straight speech. “I’m gay. Is that a problem?”
“No, no. Why would it be? You’re my best friend,” I said, trying not to stammer.
“Good.” He stood up and walked over to me. “Now, do you care to tell me the real reason you kissed me after the battle?”
“I, um, I…” I stuttered. And that’s when he grabbed me and kissed me back with more passion than I had ever thought possible from a kiss, and I was no stranger to kissing random fan girls. Jun even managed to steal one that one time…
He broke it off a second later and looked at me, hoping that I gave him the reaction he was looking for. I did.
“That was just, wow.” I blushed and grinned, unsure of what to say. It wasn’t I had been expecting that. Tai just laughed and kissed me again. I melted in to him and pulled him closer, wanting to feel his toned soccer player’s body against mine. Of course, that was when our D-terminal’s started buzzing.
We both groaned audibly and at the same time, but still grabbed them from our pockets. There was an identical message from Sora telling us that we had been attacked and needed to get our asses over there, immediately.
Tai looked over at me. “Finish this later?”
“Of course.” Both of us were grinning like idiots as we took off towards the camp ground.

“Gabumon warp-digivolve to Curseweregarurumon!” Gabumon’s celestial form was a sight to behold, not that I expected anything different. Otherwise why would it be called celestial? Even though he was incredibly similar to Weregarurumon, he was faster and stronger than his ultimate counter part and his senses were heightened, which was going to be necessary for the battle we had just walked into. Mudfrigimon was attacking us like there was no tomorrow, a gear sticking quite obviously from his shoulder. I felt bad attacking the cousin of our friend, but we had to do the same with Frigimon when wee first met him too.
“Cursed blaster!” my partner shouted, releasing a torrent of blue ice from the skull and cross bones on his chest. The champion digimon let out a howl as the gear was blown apart from the attack.
It took a few minutes for everyone to calm down and for Mudfrigimon for us to explain what was going on. He told us a similar story to the one that Marinedevimon told us, then went on his way quickly, mumbling something about Primary Village. I silently prayed that that wasn’t where he had come from.
As soon as Mudfrigimon was gone Tai sidled up to me.
“So, what exactly are we now?” he whispered to me, trying to be inconspicuous, something that Taichi was not good at.
“Well, I was kind of hoping that you would be my boyfriend,” I told him honestly.
“Good, because I was hoping you would be the same,” he replied. The grin on his face looking like it literally went from ear to ear. “What about our friends?”
I cringed. I did not want them to know quite yet. As much as I loved everyone of our friends, us being gay and together just out of the blue like this was bound to be a shock and we didn’t need the team falling apart on us right now. “Let’s wait till after this whole mess, just in case.”
Tai nodded in agreement, then walked away, still trying to be inconspicuous, which is kind of hard when you’re walking sideways. No sooner than he was out of earshot we were both attacked by the lovely ladies in our lives.
“So, did you and Taichi talk?” Sora asked ‘innocently’.
“Yeah, we did,” I mumbled. She was definitely going to make this difficult on me after what I said earlier. Not that I could blame her. I had taken a cheap shot.
“And?”
“You were right and I was wrong.” She laughed in triumph.
“Ishida Yamato, I think there is a lesson to be learned from this situation,” she gloated in her pretending not to way.
“Yeah, and what is that? I asked.
“That you never question a woman.” And with that she walked away.
