.hack//LIMINALITY
I'll be there by your side
In the land of twilight
In your dreams I will go
Till we find the sunrise
You are lost in nightmare
Deep in blue illusion
One more kiss to wake you up
Come be mine, you are mine
I will be there seekin' for liminality
No destinations to see, I wander
In quiet places so dark as eternity
I'm crying, calling your name
I'm searching for you
Dreaming in the land of the twilight
We are in the land of the twilight
Deep in blue eternity
Search for liminality
Liminal personae (threshold people)- people who are neither here nor there; the in-between people, those in transition, or those lost between the cracks of society.
Chapter 1
“Takeru-kun, Daisuke-chan wakey, wakey,” glare “…………WAKE UP!”
Daisuke slowly swam his way up out of the darkness he had been trapped in. He would have jerked his head up to look at the person addressing him but is brain was currently trying to find a way to escape his aching skull. He slow opened his eyes to peer at the person standing before him. “Hey Ken, if you wanted us to come hang out with you so badly, all you had to do was ask nicely and say please.” Daisuke joked darkly referring to himself and Takeru, both of whom were currently shackled to twin pillars. Turning his head slightly to get a better view of the structure TK was suspended from he first noticed the glowing bands of runic looking computer code encircling the top third of the pole. Next he had to do a double take when he saw Patamon sitting calmly atop Takeru's pillar; he also noticed the black spiral wrapped around its left wing near the body. Ignoring his headache he snapped his head around and searched the base of his pillar until he saw Veemon calmly facing Ken. He to had a black spiral on his left upper arm.
“Hey you jerk let Veemon and Patamon gooooo…. OH SHIT, what the fuck is that?” Daisuke asked in reference to the large body of `water?' before them. It looked like the ocean only entirely black and undulating slowly in and out upon the shore.
Takeru came fully awake at Daisuke's shout, and he peered around at the stark black and grey landscape. He was becoming angry and it bleed into his voice “just what are you up to now Ken, what is the meaning of all this?”
Ken grinned evilly up at the two boys and answered “I have thought up a new plan to conquer the Digital World, and you two are going to help me.”
~Back in the Digiworld~
“It's useless Kari, until the Kaiser shows himself we're never going to find where he is keeping Take-kun and Dai-kun” Iori pointed out.
“I suppose your right, not even this new longer range detection device Koushiro built is showing anything. We might as well head home for now and try again in the morning. If we can detect no sign of them by tomorrow afternoon then we go to the older digidestined for help, alright?” At the other two's nod they made their way to the nearest digiportal and left.
~Earth realm~
“OnÄ«-san we have a problem, TK and Dai have disappeared and we're afraid the Kaiser may have got them. We searched all afternoon and could not find a trace of them, we even used Izzy's new tracker and still detected nothing.”
“This is a problem. If Ken has them there is no telling what he will do with them.”
“That's true but we have a more immediate problem. If neither Takeru nor Daisuke come home tonight their parents will be worried.”
“Okay me and Yama-chan will take care of that; now what's your plan for tomorrow?”
“Well Iori, Miyako, and I were going to try searching again in the morning; if by tomorrow afternoon we haven't found them we were going to come get you older digidestined to help.”
“Good plan; maybe we should make you the leader of your team, huh?”
“Nah ah, no way I have enough stress in my life already.”
“Okay, okay, understood. Now let me go make plans with Yama-kun about tonight and tomorrow.”
~Yamato's apartment~
“Hello Mrs. Motomiya; yes ma'am; we were just wondering if it would be alright for Daisuke to stay over at my place tonight. Yes ma'am we're going to hang out around here, watch movies, play video games, and eat lots of junk food. Yes ma'am, thank you, uh huh, goodbye.” Matt hung up the phone and hung his head; which caused Tai to come up behind him and give him a hug. “Damnit Tai, sometimes it seems like they're trying to get rid of the kid permanently. She told me to tell him that he can stay the entire weekend if he wants too. Not that my parents are any better; Mom gave in even faster than she did and Dad's gone on a week long business trip leaving me by myself.”
“I know, but just remember you have your other family right here beside you anytime you need us.”
“Yeah but now two of our younger siblings have possibly been abducted by a sadist egotistical manic determined to rule the Digiworld.”
“We just have to hope we can find them fast and that they're alright.”
~Dark realm~
Both Daisuke and Takeru burst out laughing; their headaches momentarily forgotten. “You think you can make us help you, what kind of crack have you been smoking?” Daisuke asked.
Ken just continued to smile that sinister grin of his “You two really have no idea what's going on here do you? Well let me introduce you to your new temporary residence. This is the Dark realm, a land of pure evil from which all evil originates. Just by being here you are being turned to the darkness. In the few hours we have been here, you Takeru have become more angry and aggressive, and you Daisuke have become more sarcastic and belligerent; plus you sound more intellectual; I wonder how that could be, oh well I guess I will find out soon enough eh? Just imagine if a few hours can do this to you what kind of changes will take place after a few days; imagine the sheer malice, the spite that will be radiating from the two of you. Then stop and imagine the chaos and destruction we will unleash when the power of that hatred is directed at the Digiworld.”
Daisuke begin to struggle with his shackles “let us go you sadistic bastard!” that is, he struggled until straps emerged from his pillar wrapping around his torso, thighs, and ankles. TK was similarly bound.
“Now, now, Daisuke no need to get that excited about it. Well I'll be seeing you boys in a couple of days. If your D-3's have changed colors by then, we can start the next phase of your conversion. Oh and don't worry about it if you have a few visitors come around; the lines of code above your head will keep the less intelligent and more dangerous inhabitants away. The more powerful residents will be curious to see this realm's newest human Dark Masters. Come along Veemon, Patamon lets leave the boys to their vacation.” Ken raised his D-3 to open a portal then stopped “by the way Takeru, child of hope; the only ones who can access this realm are the ones who have no desire to help you or Daisuke. Think about that for a little while. See you soon.” With that Ken vanished leaving the bearers of Hope, Friendship, and Courage, alone with only the gloomy, desolate wasteland behind them, and the vast dark ocean before them as company.
~Earth realm~
“Okay guys Kari, Iori, Miyako you go continue your search in the digiworld. Sora you're going to America via the digiworld and then bring Mimi back here. The rest of us will search Tamachi and the surrounding areas for any sign of Ken. We'll meet back at Yamato's apartment this afternoon and compare results. Everybody got all that,” Tai was given eight separate nods “okay move out.”
~Digiworld~
Kari's group had been searching different areas of the digiworld for three days when a mocking voiced called out behind and above them. “Did the little digi-playgroup lose a few members?”
“Ken, you bastard, let our friends go immediately!” Miyako called out.
“I have no idea what you're talking about. I haven't seen that pathetic Takashi or that imbecilic Motomiya here in the Digiworld for several days.”
“Then how do you know that it's those two missing huh, answer us that?” Iori taunted.
“Please give me a little credit; I do have eyes and a brain you know. You three have been running around the digiworld like crazy, ignoring all the territory I have been systematically seizing, and the dysfunctional duo are nowhere around. Two plus two still equals four you know.”
“Alright, it's not like I believe you anyway, so what are you doing here?”
“Merely satisfying my curiosity and offering you some free advice. The area you are about to enter was recently acquired by me and has been heavily fortified. In your teams weakened state I'm afraid something dreadful might happen. After all you can barely stop me when there are five of you; what can you three alone do.” With that Ken directed the Airdramon he was riding to ascend. As he left the area he said to himself “those fools will charge right in there believing that area to be were their comrades are hidden. I have just enough Digimon scattered around to make it interesting. Let's see how well their team performs when its leader and its main strategist are out of the picture. This should kill a little time anyway; soon my new partners will be ready and then we can have some real fun!”
~Earth realm~
“Hey guys you look like you've had a rough time.”
“Yeah, we ran into Ken, he claims to have not seen TK and Dai either. He also warned us not to enter an area he just captured; we of course had to check it out.
We held our own but just barely; if there had been any really powerful Digimon there we would have been in trouble. We need to find those other two or find you older digidestined some Digi-armor egg's.”
“They are not here on Earth either; guys we need some help. Kari open us a digi-portal.”
“Where are we going Tai?”
“To try and get in touch with Gennai, of course.”
~Dark realm~
Daisuke was at the end of his rope, he had not had anything to drink since a day and a half ago when Ken had stopped by to check on their progress. Ken at that time also informed them of their teammate's lackluster attempts to find them. Three out of nine digidestined where looking for them. Even though there was no way they could find them; it still hurt to think that they thought so little of TK and him. Daisuke could understand it if they were not putting much effort into finding him, after all he was supposedly a clumsy, stupid idiot; never mind that he made straight A's and was in the top five percent of his class. TK on the other hand was a member of the original digidestined and Matt's brother besides. Everyone knew he was a smart, talented, all around nice guy; though you wouldn't know it from the look on his face right now. Looking over at the pillar Ken had placed their D-3s on; he noticed that Takeru's was completely black while his had turned grey the day before and was steadily darkening. Who needs those digi punks anyway; if they were here I'd show them who the idiot was. I'd like to see the looks on their faces when I place a dark spiral on their Digimon partners'; right before I kick them out of the digiworld forever. Unbeknownst to Daisuke he had just accepted the darkness into his heart. Above his head the glowing lines of code faded and a signal was sent to their captor notifying him of his prisoners' new status.
~Ken's perspective~
Noticing the signal received symbol on his main view screen Ken thought to himself; finally; little Motomiya lasted EIGHT hours longer than the child of Hope. I guess the news that his brother wasn't even here looking for him brought him down fast. To bad I forgot to mention that he was searching for him on Earth, oh well. Now Daisuke on the other hand; I'm glad I did some research into his records, a straight A+ student his entire school career, who would have guessed. It did make me wonder why he acts the fool though. That's when I did some searching into his home life; both parents working from five and six in the morning until ten and eleven at night, six day's a week. The one day they are home they catch up on sleep all day; I doubt he has seen his parents for more than five minutes in years. And his sister is off to her expensive boarding school during the week and on weekends she's out with friends and boys the entire time. Daisuke has basically been raising himself for years; I kind of feel sorry for him. His loneliness is probably greater than my own. Glancing down at the black sphere he held in his hand he said “that all changes shortly, none of us will ever be lonely again.” Pulling out his D-3 he jumped to the Dark World.
~Dark realm~
Reappearing in the Dark World Ken walked over to the pillar holding TK's and Daisuke's D-3s. He placed his own down beside them forming a kind of triangle, into the center of which he placed the black sphere. Pressing a few buttons on the side of the pillar caused a fourth pillar to rise from the ground behind him. Sickly neon green lines appeared connecting the three main pillars into a large triangle while three other lines split that triangle into four smaller sections. (A/N: think Legend of Zelda's Triforceâ„¢ with a pillar in the center of each triangle; four triangles, four pillars.) Ken then stepped back and up onto a platform on the pillar behind him. Meeting the eyes of the two across from him he lifted his hand and pressed a button on the data pad he held before tossing it outside of the triangle. The small black sphere in the center rose into the sky and expanded, unnoticed by the three boys who still maintained eye contact. The three boys began to simultaneously chant a spell previously unknown to two of them. “SKUL LEF VESH YUNYU RET. GEDREL SASOT LUK GOOHEIK BENE RODAIL. ELMITA RUMUSKO KENLE SAZOIL LALS LUE SUIF GAFF LAKA ALEK. VOK LANYU WASS KASALEL YALULAG. SORD SOPORUKA LIBYUN LONGIA PELIA GREL GO BAL. ALPHAMABREL AROSH GRAHALEL KUFAZET LENIV FEIA LALTONEL NAHENUD NIF WEKO SUNE EL LALS SPYUTO. RODAIL LEF USEM RO KENLE SASOT. WESASH VESH RO GAFF LANYU. SYUF ASHAL KASNA.” A black fog formed around the base of the pillars and three columns of sheer darkness engulfed the three boys before disappearing into the floating sphere above leaving no trace of either the pillars or the boys. An undeterminable time later a single column of darkness formed around the central column. It soon disappeared leaving three grinning boy's staring cross the column at each other.

(A/N: I have made use of the .hack liminality soundtrack and its lyrics simply because the idea behind liminality is echoed in this fic, people in transition going from one state of being to another and the changes that journey incites. The chant used during the dark world ceremony is gibberish taken from the Seikai Trilogy manga. I needed a strange sounding language.)
