The Fox who cried Vampire
Part 2
by Chibi Renamon

Note:
More swear words, more nervous breakdowns for Ruki, and Takato x Juri.
I'm in a strange mood, and I think this part reflects it.
However, it fits the story perfectly at this point. *G*
Oh, you'll figure...

Teeth in her neck.
No.
The feeling of her blood being sucked out of her body.
No!
The smiling man who drops her weak body on a sleeping mat.
"NO!"
Ruki Makino wakes up.

It takes her almost ten minutes to calm down a little bit.
An external observer would still classify her current state as "traumatized".
But at least her breathing has normalized. Somewhat.
Ruki is sitting on her sleeping mat, her knees under her chin, her entire body shivering.
Her right hand slowly travels towards her left shoulder, searching for the wound.
Of course, there is none. It has just been a nightmare. Hasn't it?
No. I've had nightmares before. This... this has been real. she tells herself.
Then she recalls the last few images of the dream.
The man has let me go. I'm falling. So weak. So... drained.
Her field of view changes as her head tilts forwards.
The man in the tuxedo. So drained. Unable to move. Falling.
A single tear rolls down Ruki's cheek.
My tail hurts as I fall onto it. My vision blurs, unable to focus on my yellow fur.
Ruki's head snaps up as she realizes what she has dreamed. No, witnessed.
"Renamon." she whispers, her voice turning into a sob.

Half an hour later, Ruki is running down the street.
She is wearing her 'combat gear': Her jeans and the heartbreaker-shirt.
And her knife. Knives, actually.
"I'll find you, Renamon. That bastard will pay." she whispers and grabs her D-Arc.
Ruki stops dead in her tracks when she realizes her mistake:
Her D-Arc is gone. She had thrown it right at Renamon's head.
"You know? There might be the day when I won't come back."
"Renamon..." she whispers, staring at her empty, trembling hand.
"It's not like there has ever been anybody who has cared for me."
She drops to her knees, crying.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." she sobs.
After a while, she stands up again.
"There must be a way." she quietly states, wiping the tears away.
Normally she would have simply activeted the trace function of her D-Arc.
It would have told her which way to go.
But there are other ways to find a Digimon. Renamon has proven it many times.
Even the other Tamers' pet Digimon can sniff out-
Ruki's eyes widen at the thought.
"Of course!" she whispers, grinning.
She just has to ask...
"...the others to do me a favor..." she says, her grin vanishing.
Ruki is at the edge of her third nervous breakdown this evening.
But I have no other choice. I have to ask them. she realizes and starts to jog.

Crap. I've made Renamon train day and night. And now I barely manage to climb onto that balcony!
Gasping, she pulls herself up and finally lands on the balcony one floor over the ground.
The whole process has taken her more than five minutes. Renamon would have made it in less than five seconds.
But she has made it. Now came the really hard part.

"I love you, Juri." he whispers into her ear.
"I love you, Takato." the young woman replies, smiling.
The couple is sitting in the darkness of Takato's room, kissing softly.
Takato knows that it wouldn't stay that way for a long time.
In his fantasy, they would make love in a few minutes. Reality, however, obviously has other fantasies.
*THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP*
"What the-" Takato shouts as he and Juri jump in unison.
"Takato?" a muffled voice from outside shouts.
"That came from the balcony." Juri says, pointing at the curtains.
*THUMP* *THUMP* *THUMP*
"Are you expecting somebody?" Juri asks with a sly smile.
Takato instantly blushes.
"TAKATO! IT'S ME, RUKI!"
"You're dating the ICE QUEEN?" Juri shouts, her eyes widening.
"What? Me? WaitasecondthisisnotgonnatakelongIpromise." Takato quickly tells his love.
He stands up and yanks the curtains to one side of the balcony door.
As he feared, Ruki Makino, Ice Queen and all-time heartless bitch Tamer, is standing outside.
Takato frowns when he notices her face. The young woman has cried.
Still frowning, he reaches for the door handle.
"Are you out of your mind?" Juri hisses angrily.
But Takato doesn't listen to her and opens the door.
Ruki instantly charges into his warm room and looks at Juri.
"OK. Out, bitch. I've got to talk to Takato. Alone. Now." she flatly commands.
"Make me, you crazy, heartless-" Juri starts to answer.
But Takato quickly pulls her towards the door.
"Please. I'll call you, promised. And yes, you are still my only love." he whispers, kissing her cheek.
"You're dumping me?" Juri asks, unable to believe the man she had kissed minutes ago.
"Please." Takato begs her, then gently steers her out of the room.
As he closes the door behind Juri, he sighs.
"Thanks." Ruki whispers.
Takato's eyes widen.
Ruki actually thanks me? This is going to be interesting... he tells himself.

While the gogglehead has chosen to sit on his bed, Ruki is sitting on a chair.
"Now. What's this all about?" Takato asks after a minute of silence.
Ruki sighs deeply.
"I need your help." she flatly says, hoping to sound convincing.
The boy's grin tells her that she has failed. Miserably.
"Let me put it this way: I need Guilmon's help." she tries again.
"This is getting better and better." Takato says, snickering.
"I need him to sniff out a Digimon." Ruki gives it a last try.
"Is Renamon on strike?" the boy asks, still grinning.
Ruki sighs, knowing that she would have to tell the whole story sooner or later.
"I'm looking for Renamon." she whispers.
If she had been Lee, Takato wouldn't have asked any more questions.
Heck, if she had been any other person on this planet, Takato would have helped instantly.
"Ah, so Renamon really has been the brains of the team." Takato remarks.
"OK, listen. She gave me that 'Digimon have feelings'-crap again. I got mad and yelled at her.
She disappeared, taking my D-Arc with her. Got that so far? Now I somehow know that she is in trouble.
But I have no idea where to look. And now I'm here, BEGGING you to help me. You happy now?"
Recounting the story in front of that grinning boy causes Ruki to start crying again, adding to her humiliation.
Her face is buried in her hands, and Ruki realizes that she actually deserves this.
I had gone too far. I humiliated Takato. Lee. Guilmon. Terriermon. ... Renamon.
"You're serious, aren't you?" she hears Takato ask her.
She only nods, hands still covering her face.
"I've still got one question. Why are you looking for her?" the boy asks.
Ruki looks up at him and sees that he isn't smiling, but frowning.
"I told you that I've had this feeling-" she begins to answer.
"No. That's how you knew of it. I'm asking why you are doing it."
She gives him a blank look.
"You only want your little killer who obeys your every wish, right?" Takato finally confronts her.
Ruki stares at him for a long time.
God, my behaviour has ruined Renamon's reputation, too.
Until now she thought that the others see Renamon as a victim of her behaviour.
They think Renamon is just like me.
"I... I miss Renamon. She has been the only one who has always been there for me." she whispers.
"And I sent her away. Maybe... Maybe I don't even deserve her company..." she adds after a pause.
She doesn't cry this time.
Ruki has finally realized why Renamon had left.
"I... I'm sorry, Takato. I ruined your evening." she whispers as she stands up to leave.
"Wait!" Takato suddenly blurts.
Ruki turns to face the boy.
"I have to get my D-Arc and my cards first." he tells her while searching.
"You... you're... helping me?" Ruki asks, raising an eyebrow.
Takato just gives her a look, then continues to look for his D-Arc.

Hangover.
That word perfectly describes Renamon's current condition.
She knows it, she has experienced a real hangover once.
It had been Ruki's 18th birthday, and Ruki had been terribly drunk in the evening.
Not that there had been a big party. Only Ruki. And Renamon.
Except for her family and the Digimon, nobody had even congratulated her.
However, Renamon remembers all too well that she had tasted this drink, too.
What was it called again? Sake?
That evening, Renamon has learned that Digimon and alcohol aren't a good combination.
The fox Digimon had passed out right after Ruki.
Her last actions had, of course, been placing Ruki on her sleeping mat and covering the girl with a blanket.
The Digimon groans and slowly opens her eyes.
Like the last time, everything is blurry.
This time however, her instinctive shaking of the head helps somewhat.
"Oh, you're already awake again?" a voice asks her.
She blinks to focus on the person. It's the man in the tuxedo again.
Just like after Ruki's birthday, her head gets flooded with memories.
This time, however, the memories are quite unpleasent.
She had been bitten. Most likely by a vampire.
I didn't even know that vampires feed on Digimon, too. she thinks, frowning.
Well, at least I'm not under his spell anymore. And that means...
"Fox Leave Arrow-" she yells, jumping onto her feet.
Bad idea.
Her head hits the sleeping mat, the world spinning at unimaginable velocities.
The man laughs softly and ruffles her fur a little.

Ruki quietly follows Takato and Guilmon.
The boy and the Digimon are talking. Just like friends would do.
That thought alone makes Ruki sad again. But she has put her 'heartless bitch' mask on again.
She wouldn't falter in front of the young Digimon.
Guilmon had been quite cooperative when introduced to the plan.
Of course, the Digimon isn't seeing this as a way to help Ruki.
No. The little lizard is worried about Renamon.
Of course. Nobody ever cared about her.
She crosses her arms in front of her chest.
Except for Renamon.
By now, she sees her Digimon's previous actions from another point of view.
Her 18th birthday, for example. Renamon had been there, comforting her.
Of course she had pretended not to care about anyone.
But Renamon had even stayed when she had begun to drink that sake.
Heck, the Digimon had even drunk that stuff herself.
Was that out of solidarity? Did she just do it because I did it?
She shakes her head to clear her mind.
But it's no use.
"Everything all right?" Takato asks her, bringing her attention back to the present time.
"Of course." she simply replies.
Yeah. Right. Everything will be all right. As soon as I had a talk with Renamon.

"Feeling better now?" the man in the tux asks Renamon, kneeling next to her.
"I feel... weird..." the Digimon slowly answers.
The world is finally spinning at less than three full circles per second.
"Trust me. It'll be all right soon." the man promises, petting her head.
Renamon is still in exactly the same position as after her fall. She has not dared to move yet.
"And I bet that in few decades, you will actually thank me for it."
It? Decades? Renamon asks herself, trying to think straight while the world is still spinning.
Her neck still hurts. Actually, her whole body aches.
What on Earth has he done to me?
Before she can answer that question, Renamon's vision blurs as she loses her consciousness yet again.
