The Fox who cried Vampire
Part 3
by Chibi Renamon
Renamon has managed to stand up. She even can walk a little without instantly kissing the floor again.
How long has it taken her to do so?
Days? Weeks? Months?
Half an hour. avoice tells her.
Renamon is leaning against a wall, gasping.
Her eyes dart around, looking for the person who has spoken.
"Who's there?" she asks weakly.
She is weak, but she would fight if she had to.
"Show yourself!" she whispers louder, slowly turing her head.
Silly. You won't find me out there.
Renamon groans as she sinks onto the floor again.
"Come out..." she whispers.
You're in a delirium. the voice whispers into her ear.
"It... hurts..." Renamon finally admits.
I know. I'm you. Or rather: I have been you.
"Help... me..." Renamon begs as she curls up into a small, furry ball.
I can't. I'm the old Renamon. And I'm dying.
"Old... Renamon?"
You're changing. I'm slowing it down, but in the end, I will be gone.
"Ruki..."
You won't remember her anymore once I'm gone. the voice tells Renamon.
After this sentence, the only sounds in the room are Renamon's cries.
"Ruki?"
"She dead?"
"No. She passed out, Guilmon. Ruki!"
Her eyes open slowly. Funny, she can't even remember closing them.
"Finally. Ruki, can you hear me?"
She blinks, trying to focus. Everything in her sight is blurred.
Still, she can make out a familiar dark shade of blue.
As if to show her that she's correct, her eyes finally focus.
On Lee. And Takato. And that dumb lizard. And the demented gun-bunny-wannebe-dog.
Then she is reminded of something.
Lee and Terriermon haven't been there when she passed out. Whenever that was.
"Lemme guess: You thought I was dead and instantly called Lee to party?" she asks, shaking her head.
"Yes... Errr... I mean NO! I mean... I called him." Takato stutters.
But Ruki is already ignoring him, taking a look around.
She is sitting in a forest. Yeah... Right... They've been in one for hours.
"How long have I been gone?" she asks, trying to stand.
Before anybody can answer, her legs fail to support her. But Lee instantly supports her.
"I don't need your help, you moron!" Ruki tries to keep up her image of a strong girl.
"Oh just be quiet." Lee mutters, shaking his head.
By now, Takato is supporting her left side, so that Ruki ends up between them.
"Are you all right?" Lee asks her, frowning.
"Oh sure. I'm fine. Passing out has become my secret passion." she mutters, rolling her eyes.
"You pushed yourself too hard, Ruki." Takato tells her.
"Nonsense. We haven't been going that long. It's just..." her voice trails off.
"Just what? You can tell us." Terriermon encourages her from Lees other shoulder.
"Terriermon." Lee instantly scolds his partner.
"No. He's right. You're only here because of me. You deserve an answer." Ruki whispers.
"So?" Terriermon instantly asks her, earning a quick glance from Lee.
"Have you ever noticed some kind of link between you and your Digimon?" Ruki asks them.
The girl is by now seated on a large flat stone.
"Yeah. Like the one time when Renamon attacked Guilmon."
"Or when Terriermon was in the way of Renamon's attack and digivolved."
The boys look at each other and realize that they have picked the worst examples.
But Ruki just sighs.
"That's not exactly what I meant. You were just worried then." she tells them.
"But what did you mean then?" Terriermon asks from Lee's shoulder.
The girl thinks about it.
"I mean something beyond the D-Arc. This feeling when you simply know that the partner's in trouble."
When she sees four blank faces, she sighs again.
"Maybe it's because we have never been really spereated from our Digimon." she finally says.
"I think she meaning love." Guilmon suddenly mutters.
"What?" the Digimon asks when everybody stares at him.
Ruki is the first one to look away.
"Well, the little lizard may be right. I've read novels of people who have been so in love that-"
She pauses when she realizes that everybody is staring at her now.
"You read those romantic novels?" Takato asks, his eyes widened in surprise.
"If you even think of telling anybody, you're dead." Ruki tells him.
I managed to keep the novels a secret even from Renamon, and now I just tell those... boys! Argh.
"My God. Ruki has... emotions..." Lee says in feigned disgust.
"Maybe she hurt her head when she passed out." Takato adds with a grin.
"Which brings us back to the question why you passed out." Lee observes.
There is a long pause.
"Renamon is in big trouble. I just know it. And I think it's getting worse." Ruki finally whispers.
"Then what're we waiting for?" Terriermon asks.
To Ruki's amazement, the boys instantly help her up to her feet and ask if she can walk without help.
Is this what friendship feels like? Or are they simply pitying me?
For a second she pictures herself as the victim of a huge revenge plan of Takato and Lee.
They would first make her feel comfortable, then laugh at her feeble attempts of being kind.
But she quickly rejects that idea. Something this nasty is even below her level.
True, she has kicked people, but never when they were lying on the ground.
"I think Renamon is near." Guilmon suddenly says, becoming the center of attention.
The vampire opens the door to Renamon's cell.
He sees that the furry creature is curled up in a corner, shivering.
"I see you're still fighting, Renamon." he tells her.
The creature stops shivering and stares at him.
Then, slowly, it stands up, leaning against a wall for support.
"What have you done?" she asks him, her voice barely a whisper.
"Haven't you figured it out yet?" the man just asks.
Judging by her expression, she has an idea. He smiles.
"You have been chosen, Renamon. You will be just like me. A vampire." he says, watching her.
Her eyes widen when she hears that. He just laughs and takes a small object out of his pocket.
"I guess you won't need this anymore." the man says, showing Renamon the strange device she has had.
He chuckles and puts the object back into his pocket. It would be a nice souvenir.
The man looks up when he hears a sudden roar. The creature is charging at him!
The vampire just kaughs and easily catches the creature's neck with one hand.
Then he pulls her close to him and stares her directly into her eyes.
"You should feel honoured. Soon you will be known as the Vampire of Tokyo." he whispers.
Then he throws her back into the corner and leaves the room.
"Soon you will be just like me. And you will enjoy every moment of it." he says and smiles.
He has left. The door is closed. Alone. Renamon snickers.
"I will never be like you." she whispers, curling up into a ball again.
Her paws are holding her only link to sanity.
And she would protect it with her life.
Renamon curls up even more, shielding the object with her entire body.
"Thank you, Ruki." she whispers, still snickering madly.
The human girl has taught the Digimon many things.
Most of them were taught during the training sessions.
But Renamon has learned many thing simply by watching Ruki.
And the Digimon has even perfected some things her Tamer has involuntarily shown her.
For example, Renamon has become a much better pickpocket than Ruki.
Still snickering, Renamon's paws gently stroke Ruki's D-Arc.
The snickering stops when she feels the D-Arc glow.
Maybe there is still hope. the voice tells her.
Renamon can feel it, too.
"I will never be like you..." Renamon whispers again.
Renamon, you really are a sly fox. the voice praises her.
Renamon would have smiled, but she feels the final phase of her change begin.
And once again, the room is filled with Renamon's cries.
"Time to go." he tells himself when he hears the creatures cries.
His duty here is done. Nothing can stop the Change. Nothing.
For a second, he tries to imagine Renamon with Vampire teeth.
It would be tempting to see her new self. But not now.
Erratic behaviour is a common problem among new Vampires.
For them, the whole world has turned upside down.
But after a few weeks, everything would be all right. Sort of.
Tokyo would have its own Vampire soon.
He steps out of the old building and sees that the sun has already risen.
The Vampire frowns and blinks. Sunlight still irritated a Vampire nowadays.
Though it's better than turning to dust. he tells himself.
Fortunately, his race has develpoed a certain immunity against the effects of sunlight.
It still made them weak and vulnerable, but it didn't cause death anymore.
Still he is glad that his car has shaded windows.
He sighs as he enters his car.
After a minute, he decides to visit Renamon in a few weeks.
Just to check if his little offspring was doing fine. And to see those lovely teeth.
He laughs as he starts his car.
"Who is that freak?" Ruki asks the boys.
"Don't know. But he's leaving." Lee states.
The three humans and the two Digimon are lying behind a fallen tree, spying.
It hadn't taken them long to find the abandoned warehouse.
Fortunately, Terriermon had heard the man apporach the door.
Well, those big ears have to be good for something. Ruki tells herself, smiling.
The man has had some suitcases, and it looked as if he was leaving for a long time.
Finally the car starts to move away from the warehouse.
They wait another minute, just in case.
Then Ruki climbs to her feet and runs towards the building.
"Ruki! What're you doing?" Takato tries to shout and whisper at the same time.
"There may be others!" Lee shouts.
But Ruki does not care. Renamon is in there and needs her help.
"OK, bloodhound. Where do we go now?" Ruki asks taking a look around.
"Up." Guilmon instantly replies, heading for a stairwell.
They follow the Digimon's lead for some minutes.
Finally they arrive at a massive-looking door.
Guilmon wants to storm right through it, but Ruki stops him.
"Wait. Please." she says, touching the Digimon's shoulder.
Then she slowly opens the door.
The room behind the door is small and dark. There are no windows, and just this door.
It looks like a prison cell, with the only exception that prison doors were usually locked.
"Renamon?" she whispers into the darkness.
"R-Ruki?" a hoarse voice whispers back.
Ruki sighs in relief. It has been Renamon's voice!
With tears in her eyes, Ruki runs into the darkness, leaving the others outside.
"Oh Renamon! I have-" she starts to shout happily.
Her outburst is interrupted when she suddenly thrown twoards the door again.
"DON'T COME CLOSE TO ME!" Renamon cries as Ruki hits the floor.
The girl stares into the darkness, trying to see her Digimon.
But it's no use. She would have to go in again. But not like this. Not in front of... them.
She stands up and faces Lee and Takato.
"Please. Wait outside." she tells them.
"We should stay here just in case-" Takato begins to protest.
"Go. I beg you." Ruki whispers.
Finally, Lee nods and pulls Takato and Guilmon away from the door.
"Lee! Aren't you going to-" Takato protests again.
"I respect her wish, Takato." Lee simply tells him.
When they have disappeared around a corner, Ruki sighs.
"Please go, Ruki. Just leave me alone." she hears Renamon whimper.
"Renamon. I'm sorry about what has happened. I thought that-"
"You don't understand. Please hurry. I.. I have changed..." she hears the voice whimper again.
Slowly, Ruki walks into the darkness again.
"You can tell me. I want to help you. I... I care for you." Ruki finally admits.
"I know, Heartbreaker. But I don't want to hurt you. I'm not myself anymore."
The words make Ruki stop in her tracks. Fighting back her tears, she finally nods.
"Will I ever see you again?" she asks, her eyes closed to hold back the tears.
She hears something hit the floor near her.
Ruki blinks and looks down. Lying next to her left foot is her D-Arc.
"You are still my Tamer." Renamon simply whispers.
"And you will always be my... friend." Ruki whispers, not caring about her tears anymore.
Author's note:
*sniff* So sad... But it's not finished yet...
I originally wanted to do more Renamon scenes in this part.
But somehow I found Ruki's personality (and her change of attitude) more interesting.
That leaves Renamon as a 'minor mystery' for part 4.
Yeah, I know you hate me *G*
