The Shadow
Chapter 1
"....It would seem that this was done by the same person. This is the second murder this month.
In every scene, the killer had placed a purple rose as it's calling card. Also it would seemed that
the killer is only interested in teenage girls. Police advice teenagers to be more careful when they
go out these days." Kari shivered as her dad closed the television.
"What is this world coming to!" Mr. Kamiya shook his head. "No one is safe anymore. I want
you to be more careful, okay, Kari?"
"I know dad, don't worry." Kari said as she picked up her knapsack and walked to the door.
"Don't worry dad!" Tai came out of his room, he grabbed the sandwich from the table, slung his
knapsack over his shoulder. "I'll take care of her." He called out, as he and Kari left the
apartment.
Mr. and Mrs. Kamiya shook their heads. Why don't I feel any better after that statement! Mrs.
Kamiya thought.
Sora was just taking her books from her locker, when a hand taped her on the shoulder. She
turned around to find a pair of chocolate brown eyes staring back at her. "Hey Tai!" Sora said, as
her breath became a little quicker and she stepped back a step.
"Hey Sora, did you guys hear the news today?" Izzy poked his head out from behind Tai.
Tai leaned back against the lockers and rolled his eyes. "The psycho is on the loose again!" Then
he suddenly got more serious. "My parents are very worried about it though! They wouldn't even
let Kari go out anymore."
" Well, your parents have the rights to be worried. This person already killed two people, and we
have no idea when he/she will strike." Sora said.
Tai was about to answer when Matt walked up to them. "Ya, this is really freaking my parents out
too."
They were silent for a while. A perky voice suddenly shrieked loudly from down the hall. They all
turned to see Angel, the head of the cheerleading squad, coming towards them. With her golden
blond hair, framing her face like a halo. Her clear blue eyes sparkling with excitement. She
caused many heads to turn as she stopped in front of them. "Guess what?" She asked excitedly,
before any of them can answer, she shrieked. "The dance has been moved forward to two days
from now."
Sora rolled her eyes, only Angel would get so excited over a dance.
"I was hoping a special someone would take me." Angel looked down at the floor. " But I don't
think he would."
"Hey," Tai patted her shoulders, " I am sure he would!"
"Really!" Angel's head snapped up and looked at Tai hopefully.
"Ya, sure, and if he doesn't I'll just have to beat him up, for being so stupid to give up someone
like you."
Angel's once hopeful eyes now had a bit of sadness and maybe even anger in it. But she quickly
blinked and it was gone, but not before Sora caught a glimpse of it.
Tai, you are so stupid, Sora thought. She has a crush on you and you don't even have a clue.
Oh...Why are you so clueless all the time, if only...
Sora's thought was interrupted by the sound of Izzy's voice. "Better get to class, before we're
late." Izzy commented. "See you guys later."
Everybody started leaving.
"I'll walk you to class." Tai said to Angel.
"Sure, you know, I was....."
Ignoring the pang of jealousy she felt, she watched as they disappeared down the hall.
She likes him. It's so obvious. This is too good to be true! The look in her eyes proves it all.
She is hesitant to tell him, and now she would never get the chance. No one is allowed to like
him. No one! I can smell the blood already, her blood when I slit her troat. Shadow clipped the
stem of the rose bush, the purple rose in hand. This rose will be for her, it is perfect for her. The
killer took the flower and gently placed it in the vase. But the thorn from it poked into shadow's
hand. Shadow smiled as the blood dripped onto the ground. Such beautiful things, but also so
deadly. But not for long, shadow thought, she is as good as dead.
"Hey Sora wait up!" Sora turned around to find Tai coming towards her. She can't help but
smile, she always feels happy when Tai is around.
"Don't you have soccer practice today?" Sora asked him quizzically.
Tai shrugged. " They canceled practice, something about decorating the gym for the dance. What
I don't get is, why do they have to kick us off the field, just to decorate the gym."
Sora laughed.
"So, are you going to the dance Sora?" Tai asked. Tai was looking at her with something Sora
couldn't distinguish.
"Are you asking me?" Sora raised her eyebrows mockingly. But inside she really wished that he
was.
"Well..." Tai blushed." ... Izzy said that he's going, and he wanted all of us to go as a group, so I
just thought that maybe you would want to come and..."
Sora laughed at Tai, "You don't have to explain, I know you don't look at me that way. Sure I'll
go." That statement bothered Tai.
They started walking home in silence.
"Why not?" Tai asked suddenly.
"Why not what?" Sora looked at him confused.
"Why don't you think I would look at you that way?"
"Well do you?" Sora asked.
"Well no, but..."
"That's exactly why!" Sora answered a bit too curtly. She knew that Tai didn't like her as a
girlfriend, but having him actually state it out loud, hurts.
"Well, this is my place, bye Tai." Sora walked away.
"Sora!" Tai called after her, but Sora ignored him and kept on walking.
Tai lay on his bed that night, he couldn't sleep. Why not? He asked himself again. Why don't I
see her that way? Because she is one of the guys, a voice inside his head answered, and she is one
of your best friends. You don't want to hurt her, or get hurt, a smaller voice answered. Tai
sighed, why was he even thinking about this anyway, this is illogical. It's probably that dumb
dance that everyone is so excited about that is making him think stupid things. Tai sighed and
rolled onto his side. I need to sleep, or I'll be late for school tomorrow. That was his last
thought, before he fell into a dreamless slumber.
Sora couldn't help but yawn. She didn't have a good night's sleep last night. She kept thinking
about what Tai had said. She put her hand against her mouth to stifle another yawn. She is so
tired and this math teacher wasn't helping. Couldn't her teach something more exciting, instead he
just rambles on and on.
Sora couldn't help it anymore, she raised her hand and asked to be excused to go to the
bathroom. She tried not to run out of the room as quickly as possible and made herself walk
slowly out the door.
Once she was outside, she let out a breath of relief, then she promptly sucked it back in. Only half
way down the hall was Tai.
Sora sighed and walked towards him. "Wandering the halls again, I see."
Tai laughed. "Can you blame me, when you are doing the exact same thing."
Sora smiled and the tension that was coiled up inside of her loosened. "You wouldn't believe
how boring my math teacher can be!"
Tai laughed, "Well you would never believe how annoying my Biology teacher is!"
They both looked at each other and laughed. When they fell quiet, there was an awkward silence.
"I'm sorry..." They both said at the same time, then they both smiled sheepishly at each other.
"Let's forget about what happened yesterday." Sora suggested.
"Agreed." Tai smiled back at her.
They slowly walked down the hall together, laughing and talking, never noticing the pair of eyes
that followed their every move.
"This is such lousy weather to have during the dance." Angel pouted. "I can't believe it's raining
outside. This is suppose to be fun, but now I'm so gloomy." Tai didn't mind the rain at all, he
actually enjoyed it, when lightning crashed through the sky, and thunder roared from the distance.
But he thought everyone has their different opinions. Tai turned to look at Angel. Dressed in a
purple dress, that's simple yet elegant. Angel is easily the most beautiful girl in school. But he
didn't seem to notice that, or he simply didn't care. The most beautiful girl in school is trying to
have a conversation with him and all he want to do is get away and talk to Sora.
Tai sighed inwardly, despite the fact that he had agreed that he would forget what happened a
couple of days sago, he still could not get the question out of his head. Why not? His mind would
ask, and he would star thinking about Sora. Thinking her that way, of her soft auburn hair, and
her interesting colored eyes, her soft lips, and her body, and that's when he would snap back to
his senses and want to kick himself for even thinking of Sora that way.
"Tai, Tai, earth to Tai." Tai snapped out of his thought and looked at Angel, realizing that he had
ignored her completely, he apologize. "I'm sorry, but I was lost in thought."
"Oh, it's okay, I was just asking you what do you think of my dress?"
"You look great in it!" Tai answered. "Purple suits you."
Angel smiled brilliantly " Thank-you."
"Hey Angel. Come and dance with me." Kevin, one of Tai's teammate from his soccer team,
called from across the room.
"Oh, alright. See you later, Tai." Angel said as she crossed the room.
Tai blew a breath of relief, having a conversation with Angel is exhausting. He looked around the
room, and spotted Sora, he smiled and walked over to her.
"I guess no one asked you to dance huh?" Tai raised his eyebrows. "But don't worry, Prince
Charming is here. I'll sweep you off your feet, just try not to step on my toes that much, alright?"
Tai joked.
"Prince Charming, my ass!" Sora shot back. " And Tai, I wouldn't dance with you if you were the
last guy on earth!"
"Hu-uh...." A voice interrupted.
"Oh, sorry about that." Sora said to the girl standing beside her, " Tai this is Julia, she is new here,
Julia this is Tai." Sora introduced them to each other.
" Captain of the soccer team, I've heard a lot about you." Julia said.
" Better not be bad things." Tai looked at Sora skeptically.
Sora couldn't help but laugh, and somewhere inside of Tai, he felt this strange sensation. Tai
tried to ignore what he just felt, and looked around the room to find a distraction. His eyes
suddenly fell to Julia's dress, the pin on it was exquisite. "Nice pin." Tai commented.
Julia touched her pin in surprise. She looked down at the small purple rose that was on her dress.
Now she was looking at Tai strangely. "Thank-you." She answered, and with that she walked
away.
"Was it something I said?" Tai looked at Sora in confusion.
"Probably." Sora answered.
"Hey!" Tai acted hurt.
Sora laughed, then suddenly she sighed. " Did you see the storm outside, it's fascinating. I wish
that I could be out there in the rain, but I'll get my dress wet, and probably catch a cold and ..."
Tai grabbed hold of Sora's hand and pulled her towards the exit.
" Tai, what are you doing?" Sora eyes was wide with surprise.
" You want to go outside right? So I'm making your wish come true."
"What are you? Santa-Claus!"
Tai smirked as he opened the door, and pulled Sora out with him. Tai lifted his head , as the rain
pelted his skin softly. This feels great he thought. He looked down at Sora, seeing that she was
looking up at him with something in her eyes that he couldn't' distinguish. Those beautiful eyes of
hers. As lighting crashed through the sky, illuminating her beautiful face, and thunder rumbling in
the distance. Tai's heat thudded in an amazingly fast pace, he put his hands around her, and slowly
drew her to him. Sora's eyes fluttered closed as Tai's lips gently touched hers, sharing their first
kiss.
