The Shadow
Chapter 2
Tai lay on his bed, he had no idea how long he had been there, but he just couldn't sleep. Once he
closed his eyes, the nights event would come intruding back into his mind. He had just wanted to
go outside with Sora, but the way Sora looked at him, had made him want to kiss her. And being
a guy that is as impulsive as he is, he had followed his impulsive thoughts and kissed her. Once
his lips touched hers, he was totally lost. Damn it! Who knew Sora could kiss like that. Tai
pulled at his hair, hard enough to yank a few strands from it's roots. And who knew where the
kiss would have lead if Julia hasn't walked out and saw them.
"Uh-um." Julia coughed.
Tai and Sora broke apart. Both blushing immensely.
"I am glad someone's enjoying this party!" Julia said sarcastically.
Tai glared at her.
" Sorry!" Julia held up her arms defensively, " but this dance is not going anywhere. It's boring
me to sleep! See you guys tomorrow." And with that she left.
There was an awkward silence between them.
" Sora..."
"Tai..."
They looked at each other, still blushing.
"Look Sora." Tai began. " I'm sorry about this." He gestured wildly with his hands. " I don't
know what came over me. I'll never do it again. I promise." Tai had backed away from her,
while he was saying this. His thoughts were so mixed up. How could he had kissed one of his
best friends? And he had actually like it, in fact he wouldn't have stopped if Julia haven't came
out. " I'm sorry!" Tai said with a confused look on his face as he turned around and left.
Leaving Sora in the rain, and missing the look of hurt on her face.
Why did I do that? Tai tossed around on his bed. What ever he had felt when he had kissed Sora
was over now, he thought. He closed his eyes and willed himself to sleep, hoping that tomorrow
would be a more normal day, and hopefully Sora would have forgiven him by then.
Sora breathed out a sigh of relief as she left the school. She had managed to avoid Tai all day.
She knew he had been trying to find her, but every time she saw him coming, she would turn
around and walk away before he can reach her. She knew she shouldn't be doing that, she had to
talk to him about what happened last night, but not yet. She was still too hurt by what Tai did.
She hasn't realized how much she had liked tai, until that kiss. And how much tai can hurt her,
when he walked away from her like that.
"Sora, wait up!" Tai's voice boomed from behind her.
Sora closed her eyes and swore inwardly, as she began to quicken her pace.
"Sora!" Sora yelped in surprise as a hand grabbed her arm and turned her around. She came face
to face with Tai's angry face.
"Why have you been avoiding me, Sora?" Tai demanded.
"Tai..." Sora just looked at him helplessly.
Tai's expression softened. "Sora." He whispered. " I don't want to loose you, because of a stupid
little misunderstanding between us."
Sora looked up into Tai's pleading eyes. She sighed. " Tai, it's not you, it's me. I guess I just
needed sometime to cool off."
Tai exhaled a breath slowly. " But we're friends, Sora! If I did something so stupid as to make
you mad at me, tell me. Please! Because I don't want to loose you as a friend."
Sora looked into Tai's eyes and felt all the love that she had for him. " Oh Tai..." Sora whispered
as she put her arms around him. Tai's hand instinctively went around her, holding her tightly to
him. Sora didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She was in love with Taichi Kamiya, her best
friend, the only person she knew who will never love her the way she loved him.
"Friends forever." Tai whispered.
"Friends forever." Sora answered.
Shadow's hand balled into fists. This can't be happening. I was so sure, that this would be the
end of them. Shadow had seen them kiss last night, and the anger and jealousy inside of Shadow
had nearly drove the killer to go after her, then and there. But Shadow knew that it wasn't the
right time for her to die yet. So the killer had waited, and just when Shadow thought would be
the end of the two friends, they get closer than they would normally have. Shadow's nails dug
into the palm of it's hand, drawing blood. Shadow stared at the blood, and gently loosened the
grip. It wouldn't matter Shadow smirked, she's going to die soon anyway, but first Shadow want
to have some fun with her. The smile remained on Shadow's lips as the killer turned and walked
away.
"Come on Sora, tell me!" The frustration in Mimi's voice was apparent even through the long
distance phone line. " I know you're hiding something from me, I've known you too long to
know when you're lying."
Sora cringed at the accusation in Mimi's voice. " Sora, you better tell me now, or I'm gonna
call...call Tai."
"No!" Before Sora could help herself, the word tumbled from her mouth.
"Ah-ha!" Mimi yelled in triumph, " I knew it had something to do with Tai, now tell me what."
Sora sighed, she could never hide anything from Mimi and vice versa. " Alright, but you have to
swear not to tell anyone."
"Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a thousand needles in my eyes." Came the response.
"Ok! I'muhovewuhai." Sora mumbled.
"What!" Came Mimi's response.
"I'm in love with Tai!" Sora nearly screamed into the phone.
There was a loud crash on the other side. Sora listened curiously as sound of coughing and
sputtering came from the other end of the line.
Sora frowned. "Are you alright?"
"Ya, fine." Mimi's voice was strained. " I just nearly choked myself to death!" Mimi's voice
raised and octave. " Oh Sora, you and Tai!"
"Mimi, I knew you wouldn't understand."
Mimi sighed from the other side of the line." I guess I am not all that surprised. I sort of guessed
this would happen sooner or later."
"What!"
"Well, when we were in the digital world, you always took care of all of us, but there was just this
little extra care you would put in for Tai. And well, I guess I am not that surprised. Even though
my reaction earlier said otherwise."
"Was it that obvious?" Sora whispered.
"No, but I tend to notice little things like that. You know how nosy I am, so..."
Sora nodded here head knowing exactly what her friend meant. " Mimi, you promised you
wouldn't tell."
"Promise." Mimi swore.
"Okay. I believe you."
"Of course. If you can't trust me who can you trust. Right?"
Sora laughed. "Right."
Then Mimi's voice was serious once again on the other end of the line. " How did this happen
Sora? When did you figure out you were in love with Tai?"
Sora sighed she knew Mimi would ask that question. So she told her everything, from the dance
to going outside in the rain, the kiss, and how it ended.
Mimi was silent on the other side for a while. "What are you gonna do about it?"
Sora shrugged. " Nothing."
Mimi's voice sounded incredulous. "You have to tell him, Sora, or you would loose him forever."
Sora's voice was strained. "I never had him to be able to loose him. Besides to tell him is to get
my heart broken. He made it perfectly to me that he just wanted to be friends."
"But he likes you, when I visited you guys last summer, I saw the way he looked at you. He is
just confused Sora, give him a little time and you'll see, he really does like you."
"Mimi!"
"I'm sure of it."
Sora sighed, " Can we talk about something else? I don't want to talk about this, I am so
confused right now."
Mimi's voice softened. " Right, so what to you want to talk about?"
"Uh... How about all the boyfriends you have over there." Sora teased.
"Sora!"
Sora laughed "Well don't tell me you don't have any, cause I refuse to believe it. Besides...Mimi
hold on a sec, someone's trying to get in on the other line."
"Okay." Mimi answered.
Sora switched to the other line. "Hello...hello? Can I help you?"
Silence.
Sora shrugged and switched back to Mimi's line. "Hello?"
"Who was it?" Mimi asked.
" I don't know, must have been wrong number. No body answered when I picked up."
Mimi shrugged, " Hey, I have to go alright?"
"Ya sure." Sora answered. " Don't want to block any calls from all your boyfriends in America."
Sora teased.
"There is no boyfriend!" Mimi laughed.
"Sure, what ever you say." Sora answered. A smile in her voice. "Alright, talk to you another
time. Bye."
"Bye."
Sora hung up the phone. She got up and went to the kitchen, her stomach growled. Sora frowned,
she haven't eaten all day, and she was starving. She opened the fridge, got out the bag of ham, a
bag of bread, lettuce, and tomatoes.
She began to slice the tomatoes, peel the lettuce, and made herself a sandwich. Sora took her
sandwich to the couch and was about to take her first bite, when the phone rang.
"Hello?" Sora said. No answer. "Is anyone there?" Still no answer. Sora shrugged and hung up
the phone.
An hour later, Sora came out of the shower, a towel draped around her shoulders as she dried her
hair. She looked at the clock on the wall, it said 8:00 p.m. Sora frowned she wondered where her
mom is, she should be home by now.
Suddenly the phone rang again.
Hopping it was her mom, Sora walked over to the phone, and cradled it between her shoulder and
her ear as she listened to it. " Hello?" No answer. "Hello!" still no answer. Sora knew someone
was on the other side, she can hear their breathing. "Hello?" When there was still no answer, Sora
got frustrated. " Who ever you are, stop calling me?" Sora slammed the phone down. Making a
frustrated noise, Sora sat down on the couch and turned on the television.
Ring...
Sora stared at the phone incredulous. Didn't the person get the message. Why wouldn't they
stop calling her.
Sora snatched up the phone and snapped. " I thought I told you to stop calling me! What's
wrong with you? This is the last time I'm going to say this!" Sora was about to hang up when the
voice from the other side of the line spoke out.
"Sora!" Sora's mouth went dry as she recognized that as her mother's voice.
"Mom!"
"What's wrong dear?" Came Mrs. Takenouchi's concerned voice.
"Oh, nothing mom. Someone's just been calling me, and not answering."
Mrs. Takenouchi frowned. " Are you going to be alright?"
"Yes, when are you going to be home?"
"That's what I called you about, I wanted to tell you that, I'll probably come home around mid-night tonight. But now I am not so sure, maybe I should come home earlier."
"No, don't! I'm alright. I can take care of myself mom."
"Okay then. But don't' stay up too late dear."
"Okay ma, bye."
"Bye sweetie."
Sora watched t.v. for the remainder of the night. There wasn't much on. Sora yawned as she
stretched her arms. She looked over at the clock again and saw that it was 11:00 p.m. "Wow! It's
11 already. I better get to sleep." Sora got up and was about to go to her room when...
Ring, ring, ring.
It must be mom, maybe she's calling to tell me she'll be home soon. Sora thought as she walked
over and picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
There was a click on the other side of the phone, then. " This is the second murder of the month.
The police believe both of these girls' were killed by the same person. Each girl's throat were slit.
And in each case the killer had left a wilted purple rose." There was another click on the other
side of the line, then suddenly a scratchy voice came on. " And you're next . . . "
