The Shadow

Chapter 4

"How about this one?" Sora held up the video tape.

"Not the Sound of Music! My mom makes watch that almost every other week." Tai flopped
back onto the couch.

"Well, sorry." Sora said sarcastically. "But this is the kind of movie that my mom watches. There
are no horror flicks here." Sora went back to digging through the pile of tapes.

"Come on, there's got to be one good movie that I like there."

"Well, how about this one?" Sora held up the tape labeled Titanic.

"You're kidding right?" Tai rolled his eyes heavenward. "Kari rented that movie nine times! I
don't care how good it is, nine times is enough for me."

Sora put her hand on her hips, truly exasperated. "How about Beauty and the Beast. It's about the
only tape here that you haven't rejected yet."

"I can't help it, if you don't have any movie that I like in your house." Then suddenly Tai's eyes
lit up. "I've got it. Since there's no good movie here, why don't we go to the movies?"

"I don't know." Sora eyed him skeptically. "I don't want to sit through two hours of non stop
bloodshed with no storyline what so ever."

"Come on!" Tai grabbed Sora's hand and pulled her toward the door.

"Are you sure?"

"I promise I won't make you see any creepy, freaky, or bloody movies!"

"Okay, if you say so."Sora still eyed Tai skeptically as she left the house.

"What?" You're kidding right!" Sora put a hand on Tai's to see if he had a fever.

"Hey, watch it. I don't want to spill these popcorn everywhere." Tai moved his head to dodge
Sora's hands.

"I don't believe this!" Sora said in amazement.

"Stop rambling. There's two seats over there." Tai motioned with his head.

They made their way over to the two empty seats and sat down.

"You gave up watching all those romantic movies at my house, just to watch one at the movies."

"I'm beginning to regret this." Tai said exasperated. " I overheard you talking with one of your
friends that you wanted to see this movie, so . . . " Tai shrugged.

"But . . . " Sora was cut off by Tai.

"If you say another word, I'm leaving. Now settle down. The movie is starting."

Sora smiled as she relaxed against her seat.

Tai stretched his arms above his head as he came out onto the street.

"Isn't it romantic when the guy sang to the girl at the end of the movie?" Sora's eyes sparkled.

Who knew that Sora was a romantic?! Tai put his hand over his mouth to cover his yawn. "If you
say so."

Sora laughed. " I know you liked the movie. You don't have to pretend."

Tai rolled his eyes.

Sora smiled. "I know you did."

Tai couldn't help bu smile, Sora could be pretty persistent when she wanted to be. "So, what do
you want to do now?"

"Anything you want." Sora shrugged.

"I know, let's go to the arcade."

"What! The arcade, this is what you call fun?"

"Yup! Common." Tai started off in the direction of the mall.

"Oh alright." Sora followed after him.

"You want to shoot down zombies first, or play Marvel... or race or . . . ?"

Sora stared at Tai in amusement. "You're gonna need glasses soon."

"But the price is worth it." Tai turned around and looked at Sora with a glint in his eyes. "Sora
Takenouchi, I challenge you to every game in this arcade, and the loser has to treat the other
person to dinner."

Sora's eyes flared up. "You're on."

"I can't believe you beat me." Tai said in defeat.

I can't either, Sora thought. She knew Tai had let her win on purpose. She sighed as she fell in
step with him. She had known what Tai had been doing from the beginning of the day. He had
tried to make her forget about the threats.

"I guess dinner is on me then." Tai whistled.

Unconsciously they had stopped at the soccer field, Sora looked around. "I haven't played in so
long." With school, the flower shop, and tennis she just doesn't seem to have much time anymore.

Tai raised his eyebrows. "How about a rematch. I'll still pay for dinner, besides I need the practice
for my next game next week."

Sora knowing how much the soccer next week, the final game of the season, meant to Tai,
agreed. "But we don't have a ball." Sora motioned with her hands.

Tai frowned as he looked around the field. "I know," He raced off in the direction of a couple of
kids playing soccer. After a second, he turned around with excitement in his eyes as he waved the
ball in his hands.

Sora laughed as she ran towards him. "What did you do?"

" I asked them nicely." Tai answered.

"Seriously what did you don?"

Tai rolled his eyes. "They live a floor below me in my apartment building. I gave them some
money to buy ice-creams and I promised to bring the ball back to them after I'm done."

Sora laughed.

"Don't' just stand there, Sora!" Tai kicked the ball off to the field. "This time I won't lose to
you." He raised off.

"Hey! That's cheating. Come back here right now, Taichi Kamiya." Sora raced after him.

Their laughter in the air.

Sora flopped down beside Tai on the grass. She stared up at the sky. It was getting dark, and
some stars were already visible, sparkling in the night blue sky. "Isn't it beautiful?" Sora turned to
look at Tai.

His eyes were closed and he sounded asleep. Sora studied his profile. His dark lashes that frames
those chocolate brown eyes of his is now resting against his tanned skin, above his flushed cheeks.
Suddenly Mimi's voice came into Sora's head. "You have to tell him, or you would loose him
forever... He likes you...I saw the way he looked at you, he's just confused, give him a little time,
and you'll see." Sora shook her head and looked at Tai again. "Do you?" She whispered. "I'm in
love with you Tai! Do you feel the same?" Sora could feel the tears gathering in her eyes. She
quickly blinked and turned away looking at the sky once again. Who knew loving someone can be
so painful, Sora thought. Suddenly a shaft of light went across the sky interrupting her thought.
"A shooting star!" Sora breathed in excitement. She closed her eyes and clasped her hands
together. "I wish," She whispered. "I wish that Tai would be able to win his soccer game next
week, that he would be happy." She opened her eyes just in time to see the star disappear. Sora
smiled and closed her eyes as she gently fell asleep.

Sora woke up to the soft voice of someone familiar. Her eyes fluttered open and she came face to
face with Tai. Sora sucked in her breath. "How long have we been asleep?"

"I don't know." Tai looked at her seriously. "But it's getting dark. I better get you home."

Sora looked down at her watch. "It's only 8:00pm." Suddenly she looked at him skeptically.
"Don't tell me you're ditching me, and not pay for dinner." Sora joked.

Tai shrugged nonchalantly. "If you want to eat, let's go."

Sora's eyebrows furrowed together. Something wasn't right. Why was Tai acting so distant all of
a sudden? She shook her head, it's probably just her imagination. "Do you feel like pizza? I'm
starved."

Tai just shrugged and looked at her, weird.

"What?" Sora asked. "Is there something on my face?"

Tai shook his head and just looked at her as if she had lost her mind, then he just kept on walking.

The sinking feeling that was inside of Sora just got bigger. Something was wrong! Tai don't
usually act so quiet, and he would never ignore her. Sora tried to start up a conversation again,
but Tai just kept giving her weird looks. Sora could feel her face getting warmer and warmer.

"Hey Tai!" They looked around to see Kevin and some of Tai's other teammates.

"Hey Kev." Tai's face lit up. He walked over to them, leaving Sora to follow in his wake.

"So, what's up?" Kevin asked.

"Oh nothing, I'm just bored. Me and her," Tai waved his hand in the direction of Sora, "we're
just going to the pizza place."

"Well then I better not stop you two lovebirds..."

"What are you talking about!" Tai exploded. "She's just a friend. I don't like her!"

Sora could feel her face getting red.

"Woo...sorry." Kevin smiled. "Chill, alright? Didn't mean to disc you or anything."

Tai's face relaxed. " I just want to make it clear, that's all."

"Well me and the other guys are going to practice..."

"I'll join you." Tai interrupted.

Kevin looked at Tai and then Sora. "But I thought you guys were going to go for pizza."

"Na!" Tai brushed that aside. "I'm not that hungry any ways."

"But..." Kevin began.

"Me neither." Sora interrupted in a quiet voice. "I think I'm gonna go home instead." Sora
blinked furiously, holding her tears back. "See you guys later." She turned to leave.

Tai looked at Sora with regret.

"Common! Let's go, what are you guys waiting for." Sora heard Tai's voice talking with the
others as they walked off.

Sora wrapped her arms around her body as a sob escaped her lips. The tears seem to flow out of
her now. Tai, why did you had to be so mean? I knew you didn't like me, but did you have to say
all those things. Sora brushed aside her tears as she walked away with no specific destination in
mind.

Sora looked at her watch it was 9:30pm now. She had been walking around for an hour and half.
She sighed, she had since stopped crying a long time ago, but it still hurt when she thought of
what Tai did. She sighed again and stretched her arms, she was tired, maybe she should go home
now. A good night's sleep is what she needed, but she doubted she will get it.

Sora turned around and was about to go home, when something caught her eye. She gave into
curiosity and walked closer. Her mouth went dry as she picked up the purple rose that had been
lying on the bench. For the first time Sora was aware of her surroundings.

She was in a very secluded part of the park, she had wanted to be quiet, and had unconsciously
walked here. Sora shivered as she looked at the tall trees that surrounded her, a moment ago it
had provided her with the privacy that she had wanted but now it excluded her from help if she
needed it. Sora dropped the rose, feeling truly cold inside and out. She shoved her hands in her
pocket and walked off in the direction of her house.

Crack...

Sora stopped, what was that? She shook her head, it's your overactive imagination again, she
scowled. But she couldn't help but cast a look behind her as she quickened her pace.

Crack...

Sora's eyes widened. That she knew wasn't her imagination. And it didn't matter if it was
anymore, she was scared. Sora quickened her pace to a run.

Crack, crack, crack...

Someone was chasing after her. God help me! I don't want to die yet! That was the thought that
ran through her mind as she ran faster and faster.

After a few minutes Sora slowed down her pace to a walk. She gulped in air, her legs felt weak
and there was a cramp in her side, but she ignored that. She felt like collapsing, but she forced
herself to keep going.

Suddenly Sora felt an arm come around her, a scream escaped her lips as a cloth covered her
mouth. She tried to push the hand away, but already weak from running, she had very little
strength left.

Fear heightened Sora's senses, she could hear her muffled cries against the cloth, the rustle of the
leaf against the wind, and a faint scent that she couldn't quite distinguish, and ... a familiar voice
calling her name, but it was so far away!

Sora finally gave in to the darkness that had been beckoning her. The last coherent thought she
had was the voice calling her name and then she felt herself suddenly being released and falling . . .
