Everyone was quiet the rest of the night. They were too scared to make any noise, and the deaths of Ken and Joe were starting to haunt them. The only person who could sleep, was Tai.

 

When the sun rose, everyone got out of the bus and yawned or stretched for a little bit. It was too early to talk about anything.

 

Willis was the leader for a while, leading them to Phoenix Island. Nobody talked through the whole thing.

 

While walking up a hill, Tai sighed loudly, put his hands behind his head, and started a conversation.

 

“Hey, is anyone hungry?”

 

They just ignored him. Still, they were scared to talk. Tai did another loud sigh, and his stomach growled.

 

Kari looked up. “Tai, we're all hungry, but it's not like there's any restaurant near by.”

 

Tai looked around. Nope, no restaurant, or at least a vending machine. He groaned, and fell onto his knees.

 

Sora turned, and helped him up. “We'll find something eventually.” she said, in a convincing tone.

 

Matt looked up. “Hey, Tai! You're in luck!”

 

Tai looked up. Standing in front of him was a vending machine.

 

He had no money. Palmon helped him and everyone by grabbing a soda for each person with her Poison Ivy.

 

As they sat and drank in a circle, Agumon made a fire. It was going to be dark soon.

 

Mimi looked up at the sky. The orange and yellow soothed her insides and she soon felt better, leaving away her sorrows about Ken and Joe.

 

Sora put her elbow on her knee. “Hey, Mimi?” she said.

 

“Yeah?” Mimi asked her dropping her face from the skies.

 

“What was that with you and Joe yesterday?”

 

Mimi's smile disappeared slowly. She felt her insides squirm. She lowered her head and hugged her knees. She couldn't talk. The remembrance of Joe being gone washed over her, and she started to slowly feel tears come to her eyes.

 

Matt went over to her and took off her hat. “Hey, Mimi. Lighten up. Joe and Ken won't be gone forever.”

 

Mimi looked up at him. “They won't?” she asked softly.

 

Tai yawned loudly.

 

“I dunno about you guys, but I'm going ahead to bed.”

 

He headed over to a place where the ground was soft and plopped down to bed. Agumon made another fire so they would get warm when they slept.

 

One by one, the Digidestinds started going over to Tai's place and fell asleep.

 

T.K, Matt, and Mimi were left at the end. T.K stared at the fire until his eyelids started to drop. He fell asleep there, and Patamon pushed him over to the soft spot.

 

Mimi and Matt were left.

 

They sat there for a couple of minutes, looking into the fire crackling and sparkling.

 

Mimi saw scenes with her and Joe in the fire. When they were little and she always played with him, second grade, everything. Until she remembered something else.

 

“Matt?” she asked, still staring into the fire.

 

“Yeah?” he answered, taking his eyes off the fire and drawing on the ground with his finger.

 

“What were you saying earlier? About Joe not being…..”

 

Her head fell to her knees and gulped. “…. dead.” she finally said.

 

Matt looked up at the starry sky.

 

“No matter where he is, he'll always be in one place. Your heart. And he'll stay there for as long as you want him there.”

 

Mimi smiled. She slowly felt a strange, surprising warmth wash over her. She had felt it before, but didn't recall where.

 

She felt her body slowly lean left, towards Matt. She couldn't stop herself. Her head rested on his shoulder. She smiled and closed her eyes.

 

Matt remembered this feeling too.

 

He had felt it the day before, when he was playing his harmonica and Sora came over. She listened to him behind his back, and when he stopped to take a breath, she said, “That's nice.”

 

He turned around. She had a sweet smile across her face. She started walking towards him and he stood up, having a smile on his face too.

 

She went up very close to him, and whispered, “I love you,” as they slowly moved their lips closer.

 

Sora raised her hand to put on his cheek as they kissed, but Matt grabbed it, and walked back to Tai and the others.

 

Matt came back to reality, and remembered that Mimi was sleeping on his shoulder. He smiled and took her in his arms. He stood up and walked over to the soft spot, laid her down, and slept next to T.K.
