Chapter One
"Misato?" A handsome young officer asked quietly as he rung the doorbell. "Misato? Are you there? It's me, Hyuuga."
No one answered. "Misato? Are you home?" He half-heartedly pushed the door, and was surprised it actually opened. He snuck inside. "Misato? Where are you?" he almost whispered. He came across a door that read "Keep Out! If you enter, you die." He guessed that was Misato's room and opened the door.
Sure enough, it was Misato who was curled up on the bed, dead to the world. He felt sorry for her. He knew Kaji's death had hit her hard; he figured she cried herself to sleep, and upon seeing all the beer cans scattered about her bed, he also concluded she had gotten nice and plastered while she was at it. But that didn't matter right now. Makoto knew he had to get her out of there or they would kill her.
"Misato! Misato, wake up!" Makoto shook the Major awake.
"Kaji?" she asked groggily.
"No, it's Hyuuga. Listen, Misato, we gotta get outta here."
"To your place, Kaji? At this time of night?" Yawn..."But what would Shinji say?"
"Listen, I'm not Kaji. I'm Hyuuga. Remember, one of your assistants? Now let's go!" He pulled Misato up.
"Where's Kaji? And why's this room spinning?" Misato asked as she stumbled.
Makoto put his arms around her and helped her out of her apartment; all the while Misato asked questions about Kaji, and Makoto kept telling her to move it. He led her out her back door and a little down a balcony pole when he heard soldiers storm in and shoot up the place.
That awoke Misato. "What the--what are they doing to my room?"
Makoto whispered harshly, "That's why we need to leave. They'll kill you if they find you. Now move!"
It wasn't until she and Makoto were driving in his jeep in the middle of nowhere that Misato spoke again. "Can you please tell me what is going on?"
"Well, it's like this. The Committee had Kaji killed--"
"Whoo. Big surprise," Misato said sardonically.
"And tonight I overheard that you were next. Said something about knowing too much."
"Oh sweet God, now what happens? And what about Shinji?"
"Don't worry about him; I'm more concerned with you." He stopped the jeep at the edge of the woods. "Misato, get out and run as far as you can. I have to be back at work soon and I don't want them getting suspicious. Oh, before you go, take this." Makoto handed her a disk. "Kaji gave it to me before he died. He said he wanted you to have it. Said it contains the truth, or something."
"Thanks, Makoto. I mean it. Bye." Misato said as she hopped out and ran into the woods. She ran as fast as her unsteady legs could carry her, not once looking back, for fear of seeing the soldiers chase after her. She ran until she came to a clearing in the mountains and ran into the nearest house.
Misato tiptoed around the large, dark room, trying her best to avoid running into anything. From out of nowhere, though, she stubbed her toe on some low-laying piece of furniture. "Oh--" she bit her tongue before she uttered another word, fearful that her outburst would wake the residents.
"Who's there?!" she heard a shrill female voice yell. "Show yourself!" The woman turned on the light and got into a fighting stance as she stared at the purple-haired woman holding her right foot. "Who are you and what are you doing in my house?! Answer me!"
"Please, you gotta hide me," Misato told the cross blacked-haired woman, "These guys...they're trying to kill me."
"Now why should I believe you? You could be looking to kill us all, for all I know."
"No, I'm telling the truth. You can't let them get me."
"Do you know what? I'll get my husband to deal with you." She headed back up the stairs and Misato could hear her yell, "Goku, wake up! There's a strange woman downstairs and I need you to deal with her."
"Wha--why?" Goku said tiredly. "You can do it." Misato heard heavy snoring again.
"GOKU! GET THIS WOMAN OUT OF HERE!"
"Alright, you ain't gotta yell so loud," he said drowsily. Misato saw a tall man with the freakiest hairdo she'd ever seen--either that or really, really bad bed hair--walk down with the woman who had been threatening her. "So who are you and why're you here?" Goku asked cheerily.
"There's these guys...they're gonna kill me...you gotta hide me."
"Kill you? Well, who are they, miss--"
"Katsuragi. Misato Katsuragi. They're from this top-secret organization and they wanna kill me because I know too much."
Goku looked into her eyes for a moment before he said, "Okay, Misato. Let's go in the living room."
The woman beside him gaped openly at her husband. "What?! Goku, don't say you believe this lying...thief?"
"Yes I do. She's telling the truth. Now Misato, do you want any food or anything?" Goku asked Misato as he, his wife, and Misato sat down in the living room.
"Just some beer."
"Sorry, we don't have beer," Goku said. "D'ya want some sports drink instead?"
"No beer? What are ya, Mormons?"
"What's a Mormon?"
"See?!" the wife burst out, "She's a drunkard! Her kind lies about everything!"
"My kind? Whaddya mean by that, old hag?!" Misato exploded.
The wife stood up, ready to backhand the little upstart. "Old hag?! Who do you think you are you little--"
Goku got between them just in time. "Whoa now, just calm down." He got them to sit back down, then said, "Well, I guess I should introduce ourselves, Misato. My name's Son Goku, and this is my wife, Chi Chi--"
"Hey Dad, what's the commotion?" A handsome teenage boy who looked vaguely like Hyuuga stood in the doorway, right next to by a little kid who had the same bed hair as Goku. "Who's she?"
"--And these are my sons, Gohan," he said, pointing to the teenager, "and Goten," pointing to the little boy.
"Hi," they said in unison as they sat down on the couch. "And you are?" Gohan asked.
"Misato Katsuragi. I'm from NERV."
"NERV who?" Goten asked.
"A top secret organizatio--wait, why am I telling you this?" She stood up, then quickly sat back down, wincing and holding her head.
"What's wrong?" both boys asked at once.
"Ooo, it's this killer headache."
"Don't worry, I'll get the ibeepopen," Goten said eagerly. He ran into the kitchen and came back with some pills and a glass of water.
Misato chugged down the pills and the water and sighed, "It's no beer, but it'll do. Now where was I?"
"Those men who are after you," Goku prompted.
"Right. You gotta hide me. If they find me, they'll kill me."
"Why?" Gohan asked.
"Because I know too much. That's all I can tell you."
Goten piped up. "You don't gotta hide. We can beat the bad men up."
"You don't get it, Goten. They're pros. Two men and a boy can't stop a whole army."
"Why not? My dad beat Buu."
"Buu?"
Gohan gave Goten a warning glare.
"Right. No one's s'posed to remember it. But we're really strong. Wanna see?" Goten got off the couch and lifted it--people and all--effortlessly.
Misato openly gaped at the boy. She heard Chi Chi yell to be let down right this instant.
"And my brother and my dad are even stronger. Oh yeah, my mom's strong too." Goten put the couch back down.
Misato reconsidered telling them the whole mess with NERV and SEELE, seeing as how she had her own personal army right in front of her. "All right, I'll tell you everything. But you have to promise to stop them."
"We promise," Goku said.
"Okay. There's this secret organization called NERV, which was created to stop the Angels, who are bent on destroying humanity. Or at least that's what they want you to believe."
"Go on," Chi Chi prompted.
"I have a horrible feeling they're not telling the truth, not even about the Angels. You know what Second Impact is, right?"
"That horrible flood that happened when Gohan was little?"
"Yes. Anyways, it was supposedly caused by a meteorite landing in Antarctica, when in fact it was caused by the Angels. And I think NERV's lying about that, too. They're up to something sinister, I just know it. My lover, Kaji, snooped around NERV, you know, to get to the truth. He was killed yesterday and my assistant--Hyuuga--said I was next."
"How do we know you're not making this up? You are an alcoholic, after all."
"Enough with the alcoholic cracks! Look, I have a disk right here--" she pulled it out of her jacket pocket, "That tells everything about Second Impact, Third Impact, the Angels, Adam, everything! Pop it in your computer."
"I hate to burst your bubble, but we don't have a computer," Chi Chi said smugly.
Gohan piped up. "But Bulma has one. In fact, she has lots of them. Supercomputers, even."
"GOHAN, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE ON MY SIDE!"
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Misato said. "Let's go."
*************************************************************** *******
"Who in blue blazes could be visiting at this time of the night?" Bulma yawned grumpily as she answered the door. "Yeah, whaddya want?"
"Bulma?" Goku said. "Can we come in?"
Another yawn. "What for?"
"We have a friend her who needs our help."
"Goku, do you even know what time it is? It's almost five in the morning! Some of us need our sleep." Bulma started slamming the door in his face.
Goku forced the door back open. "But Bulma, she really needs us. Some bad men are gonna kill her, and soon. And we gotta use your computer, too."
"Really. And this can't wait 'til morning, why?"
"Because I have to convince them to protect me, that's why."
"And you are?"
"Misato Katsuragi of NERV." She flashed her NERV insignia.
That got Bulma's attention. "NERV? You mean it's real? I thought it was only a rumor perpetuated by the upper echelon."
"Yeah, it's real, all right. And there's this other organization, SEELE--look, can I use your computer? I have a disk that tells the whole truth about everything."
"Just a minute. I need to wake up Vegeta and Trunks."
*************************************************************** *******
Goku, Chi Chi, Gohan. Goten, Bulma, Trunks, and Vegeta--who was grumbling about being interrupted by intruders--all stood around Misato as she popped the disk in the computer in Bulma's lab. Bulma, Gohan, and Misato gaped and evoked various deities as they scanned the data. Vegeta stood wide-eyed; though he wasn't the technical genius Bulma was, he wasn't stupid and he'd lived with her for over eight years.
"So? Goku asked, "What's it say?"
"NERV instigated Second Impact."
"Insta-who?"
"She means they caused it, you dolt!" Vegeta snapped. "They are responsible for killing off half the world."
"All to return Adam to embryonic size."
"Huh?" everyone else asked.
Misato turned around in her chair. "You might wanna sit down, 'cause this'll take a while. Let's go upstairs."
After everyone was comfortably seated, Misato continued. "Long ago, there was a single being. They eventually split apart into two: Adam and Lilith. From Lilith came us. From Adam came the Angels, beings that can take any form and are supposed to be immortal. One day, a man named Keel Lorenz found something called the Dead Sea scrolls and got it into his head to return us to our "perfect" form, a single being. He created SEELE to achieve that end."
"And?" Chi Chi asked.
"And he created another organization called Gehirn to instigate Third Impact."
"What's Third Impact?" Trunks asked. "Is it like Second Impact but worse?"
"No. Third Impact is the process by which we'll return to that single perfect being. Anyways, a man named Gendo Ikari was put in charge of Gehirn, and also Project E, a project to build Evangelions, giant artificial angels who would usher in Complementation--Third Impact."
"How can one cause such a monstrous thing?" Chi Chi asked this time.
"The Dead Sea scrolls contain instructions for it. First, man must face and conquer seventeen trials, each one by one--that would be those angels. After that is done, Adam and Lilith must be brought back together. Or an Angel can be used in place of Adam. Or an Evangelion, provided it also has the Lance of Longinus."
"Wow, that sounds complicated. So are these angels friend, or foe?"
"Foe. They're after the same thing we are. Except to initiate their Third Impact, they must return to Adam. Which would mean the extinction of humanity."
"As opposed to evolving to some freakish creature? Wouldn't we die off anyway?"
"Apparently, but SEELE thinks it's better than extinction. Anyways, if they initiate Third Impact, they become perfect and we die off. The sad thing is, we brought it on ourselves."
"How?" Goku asked.
"Fifteen years ago, the Katsuragi expedition--my father's team--found Adam in Antarctica and attempted to shrink it to embryonic size. The resulting explosion melted the polar ice cap and caused a great flood, killing half the world's population."
"So they killed all those people," Goku growled.
"Yes, and now we have to fight the Angels in order to survive--at least, that's what we told. We're up to the fifteenth Angel now. And they can't be killed by conventional weapons; they have to be killed by the Evangelions. They are the only thing that can penetrate the Angels' AT Field--the physical barrier around themselves."
"Why?" Goku asked.
"Because they are like the Angels. Remember, the Evas were created from Adam. That, and they have souls. The Evas never fight without their pilots."
"So how do we stop all this?"
"First we have to kill the angels--all of them. Then we have to somehow get Adam and Lilith and keep them separate so Gendo can't initiate Third Impact."
"That should be easy," Goku bragged. "We're the strongest beings on the planet, and--"
"Kakarot! We're nothing like Angels!"
"But we're living, Vegeta, like them. I'm sure we can bring them down."
"And Adam and Lilith?" Misato asked.
"Easy! We'll use the dragon balls!"
"Dragon what?!"
"Dragon balls. They grant wishes. We can wish Adam and Lilith here."
"Dad, that's brilliant!" Gohan raved.
"Have you forgotten on thing? We don't come to the Angels; they come to us, or more specifically, whoever has Adam, so be prepared," Misato warned them. "And Bulma, can you build something like the Magi system?"
"Maybe, if I knew what a Magi was."
"I'll explain on the way. We'll need it for the Angels. Hey Goten, fetch me a beer, would ya?"
Goku got up and stretched. "I'm starving! Who wants to eat?"
After everyone finished breakfast--Goku pulled Misato and Bulma away from the lab because they wouldn't leave themselves--one of them found all seven dragon balls and brought them together.
"Are you sure this'll work?" Misato asked curiously.
"Trust me," Bulma said. "Arise, Shenron, and grant our wish!"
The dragon balls glowed bright orange, the sky turned black, and a huge serpentine dragon emerged from the balls. "I AM SHENRON! WHAT IS YOUR FIRST WISH?" it growled.
Misato gaped openly.
"I want to bring Adam and Lilith here. Oh, and keep them separate," Bulma added.
*************************************************************** *******
Back at NERV HQ, everyone gaped at the screen in front of them showing the enormous dragon.
Fuyutsuki whispered to Gendo, "Ikari, someone's trying to prevent Instrumentality."
Gendo kept a straight face, as always. "Let them. I have a plan."
*************************************************************** *******
Shenron's eyes glowed red. "YOUR WISH SHALL BE GRANTED!" What looked like an embryo dropped from the sky. A few feet away, a huge, white being wearing a mask dropped down a few feet away. "WHAT IS YOUR SECOND WISH?"
"How many wishes does this thing have?" Misato asked, still gaping.
"Two," Goku said..
"Then you better wish for something else, because I'm sure Gendo will use it if he finds these dragon balls."
"Okay," Goku said cheerfully, "I want a cheeseburger and fries!"
A cheeseburger and a bag of fries landed in Goku's arms, and he began munching happily.
"UNTIL THE NEXT SUMMONING!" Shenron roared before he disappeared and the dragon balls scattered.
"Well," Bulma said, looking around, "Someone's gonna have to clean this up."
"Yes, we have to hide them as deeply as possible," Misato added.
"I know just the place to hide Lilith. We can keep Adam. Be back in a sec!" Trunks flew off with Lilith, the huge white figure.
"Where's be hiding it?" Misato asked.
"Why should we tell?" Vegeta asked. "NERV might be eavesdropping. But he's hiding it in a very safe place."
"Good."
*************************************************************** *******
Bulma and Misato hadn't been in the lab long when they heard a shrill beep on the computer. Misato looked at the monitor. "No, we're not ready yet!"
"What is it?"
"It's an angel. The fifteenth one." Misato looked at the screen for a minute longer, then she and Bulma ran upstairs.
"Everyone! An angel's here!" Misato shouted.
"Where?!" Goku asked.
"Right at the edge of the atmosphere, near the front of the building. You can't reach it from here."
"Oh yes we can," Vegeta boasted before he walked outside to face the angel.
"We can fly and shoot energy," Goku told her. Everyone went to the door to watch the fight.
Outside, a few feet into the yard, Vegeta shouted to the sky, "Come here, Angel! I'll kill you!" and started gathering his ki. Suddenly, a huge beam of light enveloped him, forcing him to kneel.
"Vegeta, what's wrong?" Goku shouted. "Are you all right?"
"Get out, you worm!" Vegeta shouted. "Get out of my head!"
"Your hea--Bulma!"
"No," Bulma whispered as she crouched in pain, holding her head. "No! It's raping Vegeta's mind!"
Everyone stared at her in shock. "How does she know this?" Misato asked harshly.
"Their bond," Chi Chi explained, "She can feel when something terrible happens to Vegeta. She felt his death once."
By now, Bulma had keeled over, still clutching her head.
*************************************************************** *******
Vegeta was standing in the stadium where the World Martial Arts Tournament was held. He had blonde hair, green eyes, and a big M on his forehead. He lazily lifted his arm and destroyed the seats beside him, narrowly missing Bulma.
*************************************************************** *******
"No! You can't...Bulma knows. Now get out!" Vegeta started powering up in an attempt to drive the angel out of his head, going Super Saiyan 2 in the process. "I WON'T LET YOU WIN!"
*************************************************************** *******
The Cell Games. Cell had just put a beam through Mirai Trunks' heart, killing him. And Vegeta stood there, powerless to do anything. Memories of him and his future son filled his head in rapid succession.
*************************************************************** *******
"I...made my peace...with Trunks!" Vegeta slowly stood up, fully powered, and marched toward the angel. "You're just like...Babadi! I beat him...and I'll beat you!!!"
*************************************************************** *******
Memories quickly flew through Vegeta's head...his ascent to Super Saiyan...his discovery of Trunks...his humiliating death on Namek....his crushing defeat on Earth....his abuse at the hands of Frieza.
*************************************************************** *******
"NOT THAT!" Vegeta was immobilized. "ANYTHING BUT THAT!" He was slowly being forced back to the ground.
Goku clenched his fists tightly. "We gotta do something! Vegeta's in trouble!"
"And just what are gonna do, huh?" Misato asked sharply. "Charge out there like he did? We don't know what this angel is capable of! What if he attacks you too?"
"I don't care! I gotta help Vegeta!" He flew out and shouted, "Hey angel! Your mental mumbo-jumbo won't work on me! Get me! Attack me!" He rushed into the sky...
...only to be swatted down like a fly by two giant biomechas, one red and one blue.
"What the...Eva?!" Misato gasped.
"Those are Evangelions?!" Gohan asked.
Misato just nodded her head.
*************************************************************** *******
Gendo leaned back in his chair--watching Evas 00 and 02 fight the strange man--wearing a satisfied smirk on his face.
"So this was your plan?" Fuyutsuki whispered.
"Yes. Give them enough trouble and they'll gladly hand over Adam and Lilith."
"But what if the angel kills them?"
"So be it; the Evas will stop it if that happens."
Shinji stood a ways from Gendo's desk, watching the Evas brutalize that man; Shinji looked horrified. He turned around and faced his father. "Why are you doing this, Father?! Wasn't once enough? You couldn't just rape my Eva, you had to violate theirs too! I could...I could..." Shinji trembled.
"You could what?" Gendo asked coldly.
"I could just hit you!"
"Try it."
Shinji screamed as he ran and socked his father straight in the nose. Almost immediately he looked around the room, terrified, then he ran out.
"So, what should we do with him?" Fuyutsuki asked.
Gendo held a gloved hand up to his bloody nose. "Leave him be, for now."
Inside Eva 02, Asuka cursed and yelled in German for Gendo to stop the thing. Rei stayed silent inside her Eva, but even she looked perturbed.
*************************************************************** *******
Goku growled loudly in frustration. He desperately needed to help Vegeta--who by this point was banging his head on the ground attempting to drive out the angel--but the Evas made it impossible. At first, he tried to reason with the pilots, but they wouldn't listen. Then the red one leapt upon him and tried to tear him apart. He had been trying his best, but every time he broke away from one of them, the other one would intercept him and pull him back into the fray.
Back at Capsule Corp, Misato looked at the Evas in horror; they were actually trying to help the angel instead of fighting it! She looked over and saw Gohan stand stiff with anger; she looked farther and saw Goten and Trunks attending to Bulma, who was still crumpled on the floor, shaking. In her peripheral vision, she noticed a golden glow emanating from Gohan.
Gohan had been watching the battle for a while and his muscles stiffened in anger. When he saw Vegeta trying to hurt himself, he yelled out, "LEAVE HIM ALONE!", powered up all the way to Super Saiyan 2, his eyes turning white with rage, and he flew top speed up to the angel. He let out a monstrous yell as he released a huge amount of raw energy straight at it. It penetrated the angel's AT Field and killed the angel instantly before shooting off into space.
Everything stopped. The two Evas walked away. Goku flew at the Evas, demanding that they stop. They swatted Goku all the way into one of the walls, then disappeared.
Vegeta powered down suddenly and collapsed, breathing heavily. Trunks ran out to help his father. "Dad! Are you all right--what's wrong?"
"Stay away from me," Vegeta growled, "Leave me alone!" Vegeta flew off to parts unknown.
"Vegeta!" Bulma ran to the nearest vehicle and drove after him.
"Bulma!" Goku shouted as he walked out of the rubble, but was too late. He saw Gohan kneeling on the ground, staring at his hands. "Gohan!" He ran to his son's side. "Gohan, are you alright?"
"D-dad?" Gohan asked softly, "What did I do? Did I destroy the angel?"
"Yes, son, you did. You saved us."
"I...I don't remember. I haven't felt like this since Cell. I felt like I was losing control. I'm... scared, Dad, like when I was a kid."
"Gohan, you saved us all when you killed Cell. And you were in perfect control, too; you were awesome. Don't worry, you won't kill anyone innocent."
"B--but you don't know what it's like, Dad--"
"If you ever get like that, I'll stop you. I promise."
Gohan stood up and hugged his father tightly. "Thanks, Dad."
