CHAPTER 5

"Let's go to my house. I have to check on Sammy. Luna's there also," she breathed heavily, running towards her house, Raye, Lita, and Amy following close behind.

After about ten minutes, Serena finally arrived, throwing her front door open. "Sammy! Where are you? Sammy!" She ran through the house, calling his name every so often. "Mom? Dad? Where is everyone?" She pulled a note off her bedroom door and read it aloud. The girls had just reached Serena and were listening closely to what Serena was saying.

"We've got your little brother, Sailor Moon. For now, we won't hurt him. As for your parents…" Serena could just hear an evil laugh. "Give us the crystals you and Tuxedo Mask have…or your brother will suffer the same fate as your parents…only a more 'agonizing' experience."

Serena stared at the note, tears forming in her eyes.

"Sammy…" she whispered, trying to hold back the tears threatening to spill over, and the aching pain she felt in her heart.

"Serena…" Raye began, but couldn't continue. She didn't know what to say. A sudden scream filled their ears from down stairs in the living room.

"Amy!" Lita yelled. The girls quickly rushed to their friend's aid, Serena in front. She stopped abruptly, causing the others to crash into her. Amy looked at her dearest friend.

"Oh Serena, I'm so sorry!" Amy hastily caught Serena as she collapsed to her knees. A cry escaped her lips as Serena trembled uncontrollably.

"Mo-mother! Father!" Serena crawled over to them, checking for a pulse. She turned to Amy who shook her head sadly.

"I'm sorry Serena…Their bodies were in shreds when I got here…we were too late." Amy couldn't face here friend. Their bodies were cold, and laid ruined and torn apart in a pool of blood. The looks of pure agony on their faces said it all.

"Kakou," Serena growled as if it was a curse word. Then she placed her hands on her parents' forehead and said in a low voice, "Don't worry mom and dad…your deaths will not be in vain. I will avenge you and rescue Sammy if that's the last thing I do. I swear it." She placed a blanket over their bodies.

Serena looked around the house. It was in ruins, glass broken and sprawled out across the floor, the TV's screen was punched in, CD's broken in two. Everything was on the floor. There was only one thing that wasn't touched…

"Shouldn't we call the police?" Amy asked, breaking into her thoughts. Serena shook her head.

"No, this is our fight, not theirs. I have a feeling that we're going to need help though. She searched the room carefully with her eyes, then ran back up stairs to her room. "Luna?" She looked up at her ceiling fan. Serena gasped.

"Luna? Hold on, I'll get up down…" Luna was hanging down from the fan by her back feet on a rope, unconscious. Serena pulled a chair over and unwrapped Luna's feet and took her carefully in her arms. "Oh Luna, I'm so sorry." The black cat's forehead glowed faintly as she rubbed the cat's crescent moon. Luna was damp, and her body was shaking in Serena's arms.

"Serena?" the cat purred softly.

"Yeah Luna? I'm here now," Serena cooed softly as she walked slowly out of her room and down the stairs. The girls were waiting for her in the foyer.

"I sorry, Serena. I tried to stop them, but they were to powerful…" Luna's voice cracked as she spoke barely a whisper. Serena gently laid Luna on the bench in the hallway.

"Watch Luna for me. I have to get something." They nodded solemnly as they carefully petted Luna. Serena quickly ran to the living room.

She picked up a picture of her, her mother, father, and little brother. They all looked happy. She smiled slightly as she remembered that day. Her family was going down to the lake for a nice summer vacation. Sammy and Serena fought jokingly with each other as Serena teased Sammy for having to use floatation rings to stay afloat. Sammy took them off in anger and almost drowned. Serena, at first, thought he was playing, but soon figured out that he wasn't and saved him. Ever since that day, Serena had never hesitated to come to her brother's aid.

Serena carried the picture over to her parents. She placed the picture by their heads, bowing as she said a prayer.

"Don't worry mom and dad. I'll find a way to take care of Sammy after all this is over." She bowed again, turning to leave. She couldn't take looking at their fallen forms. Their clothes were shredded and their body torn. She cried silently for a moment before heading back to her friends.

"Serena?" Lita asked, unsure of what to say. She hesitated. "…I know how you feel…I also lost my parents…just not as tragically as you did yours…" she whispered the last part. Serena nodded thanks to Lita.

"Let's go back to the temple," Raye began, but Amy shook her head.

"No, we can't go back their. They know where it is. It's not safe."

"I agree with Raye," Serena spoke up. They looked quizzically at her, waiting for an explanation.

The Negaverse will surely look there, Serena," Lita stated.

"And that's exactly where we want to be. Besides, Raye and Chad are up there and need our protection." Raye smiled thankfully at Serena, but she didn't notice. Serena was to busy picking up Luna and wrapping her in a kitchen towel that she had found on the floor by her feet. Careful not to step on anything, she proceeded to the front door, but suddenly stopped. "Go on without me. Take Luna with you too. I'll catch up with you guys later. Right now, I have something to think about."

"But Serena, It's too dangero-" Raye began, but Amy held up her hand, taking Luna.

"Let her go. I trust she'll be fine."

"Thanks Amy," Serena grinned. She watched as they left. Raye and Lita reluctantly went, following the confident Amy with the sleeping cat in her arms.

As soon as they left, Serena ran up stairs to her room. She dug through the mess, but couldn't find it. She left her room and entered Sammy's. She soon found what she wanted.

"Ah ha! Finally!' She quickly opened the folder to her brother's favorite kid story. "This is it. Now I just have to see if it works…" she quickly exited the room and searched around for money. After finding a little over $300, she grabbed some Lysol and some air freshener. Then she started spraying it everywhere that she and the scouts had been. Serena didn't want any dogs to pick up anyone's cent, especially not Kakou's. Finally she was ready to leave. On her way out, she stopped by the living room.

"I love you, mom and dad. Goodbye…and thank you." Soon, she was out of the house and on her way to a pay phone. When she found one, she slipped in a quarter and dialed 911.

"Hello?" a voice on the other end of the line said. "How may I help you?"

"Hi," she tried to say calmly and in a more mature voice, but tears were welling up in her eyes. "I heard a struggle in the house on 15533 Forest St. I saw this person walk out of the house carrying a dead girl who looked about thirteen and had long blonde hair, and a little boy who had light brown hair. He was kicking and screaming. The person left in a tinted windowed van."

"What did this person look li-" Serena quickly hung up. She didn't like lying, but she couldn't help it. She walked a little ways away from the phone booth and sat down on a bench. She watched silently as the police car and ambulance sped by in a blur.

Serena sighed sadly. That was the last time she planned to go back there, at least for awhile. She wouldn't be there when her parents were buried, but if her parents were still alive, they would have understood. They would have wanted her to do what she just did, most likely. They would have wanted to her and Sammy to stay together.

Serena smiled sadly as a tear slid down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away, thinking about what her parents had said.

"Family's everything. In this case, you have a bigger family than most. Take care of them." Serena knew that her big family had consisted of her friends as well. Her mother and father had sensed a strong bond between the group, so they considered them her family to.

She pulled out the sheets of paper from the folder to make sure they were still there, and then put it back, careful not to wrinkle or rip the pages. Sammy's favorite story was about these people. These people were strong and could live up to any challenge. They were from an extinct race called the Saiyans, one of them was a prince from the planet Vegeta. The other was a third class warrior who always found a way to save Earth and his friends. In this world, they had these things called dragonballs that would grant you two wishes if all seven of them were brought together.

Sammy liked this story since he was two, and had believed that this world was real. He said that one day he planned to go see it. He stopped having faith in the story when some kid at school kept teasing him in third grade two years ago. Since that day, it had laid forgotten in a desk. Serena hoped to god that his former belief was true, for it may be their only hope to stop Kakou. Serena was heading towards the temple when a black sports car passed by.

"Hey Serena. Do you need a ride?" Darien poked his head out the window and asked. Serena stared at him before nodding.

"Can you take me back to the temple?" He nodded. They drove in silence. Serena was looking desolately out the window, about ready to cry. Darien noticed this.

"What's wrong?" he asked. She looked up at him and saw the sincerity in his eyes. She felt like telling him everything and he could make her feel better, but she kept quiet.

"Nothing," she had said, but something still wanted her to tell him. Serena sighed. She had more important things to do, like find Tuxedo Mask and get the rainbow crystals from him. And finding a way that she could get these 'legendary' Saiyans to this world. Even if she did find a way to get them here, would they help her? What if they didn't? Then what?

"Serena?" Darien asked again.

"Please don't Darien," she asked as the tears brimmed up in her eyes. She really wanted to tell him, and would if he asked one more time. "I can't talk about it."

"Oh…" was Darien's reaction. He thought for a moment then reached under his seat and pulled out something red. "Here, you can have this. Someone once gave me a rose when my parents died, and it made me feel a whole lot better. She also told me that she would always be here for me, but you see, I never got a chance to tell her the same." Darien smiled innocently. Serena smirked as she appreciatively took the rose, but decided to play along.

"Oh? Well I'm sure that she knows that…" Serena laughed softly, causing Darien to smile. When they reached Raye's temple, Serena turned to him.

"Darien…I have to ask you a favor."

"Yeah?" He said, hoping that she was going to tell him what was wrong.

"Please don't mention that you saw me after this morning." It was almost noon now.

"But why?" he asked, confused.

"Watch the news tonight. Then you might understand. Just please don't Darien…it's very important to me." She leaned over and kissed his cheek. "Goodbye Darien…" She quickly leaped out of the car and ran into the temple, leaving a dumbfounded Darien alone. He stared after her.

"Serena…I wish you would trust me. I have never felt anything like what I feel for you. I would never hurt you," Darien whispered, then drove off.

Serena watched through the window as he left, sighing.

"Goodbye, Darien." She felt like crying, but she held it in. Amy came in and sat down next to her on the couch below the window. She looked sympathetically at her friend and leader.

"Serena," Amy spoke softly. She knew that Serena would proclaim herself dead and call the police as an anonymous person. "You did the right thing. I'm just sorry it had to be this way." Serena nodded. She had to hold in her sorrow though. She had to be tough, for the world…for Sammy.

"I'm sorry to." Serena said, putting on a fake smile.
