Chapter 35 - Finally
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
In all of remembered history, a living mortal had not passed though the gates of Heaven. Vegeta set a look of determination on his face. Very few true demons had come close to peaceful sanctuary. Due to the state of the world, there wasn't really anyone there to herald their arrival. This was a good thing. Vegeta was having a hard enough time moving in the serene atmosphere. Hiding his agony from Bulma was becoming difficult.
“Come this way.” Vegeta set Bulma down and pulled her along behind him.
Bulma knew the severity of the situation. She realized what was at stake for everyone, and yet the splendor of her surroundings caused her feet to stumble. Bulma looked around as she ran behind Vegeta. “This is…” She turned her head trying to take in the perfection around her.
“It's Heaven and believe me, when you spend enough time here you get used to it.” Vegeta snarled. He didn't mean to do that. The pain was searing. Vegeta stopped and tried to cover up the amount of pain he was in yet again. Bulma could not know that he was dying here. If she were to know that he was giving his existence to save her and their child, he feared she might pull back. Then there would be no hope. After all, this was the path Goku had chosen. It was a noble act that, even in his demon form Vegeta could not forget.
“Vegeta why did you stop?” Bulma watched Vegeta drop his hands to his knees and cough.
“The better question is what is he doing here at all?” The voice caused Bulma and Vegeta to turn.
Bardock the Angel of war strode toward them. He was tattered from the battle and his eyes were like black holes. They absorbed everything they touched and left nothing.
Vegeta actually trembled. He had never see Bardock like this. It was terrifying.
Bulma felt a rush of panic rush over her. It was unexplainable and it was all she could do not to run screaming. “Vegeta…” She clinched her hand into his shoulder.
Vegeta stood straight and refused to allow Bardock to view any of his emotion. “I have come to talk with HIM.”
“A demon wishes to stand before the creator of all things.” Bardock scoffed. “I think not.”
“Please, you don't understand.” Bulma cried out from her hiding place behind Vegeta's dark feathered wings.
Bardock didn't bat an eyelash. “I comprehend better than you do, mortal. The Earth is to be destroyed. The time of man has ended. I am already leading the war to eradicate all evil from the surface of the planet.”
“That's evil!” Bulma shouted back.
“And what do you know of true evil, mortal woman?” Bardock growled. “The demon you cower behind is the embodiment of it. He was once an Angel, one of the favored in heaven. He gave it up for a place as a mortal. Vegeta was bestowed the greatest gift any Angel could ask for, his mortality. Any of my brethren would risk all they possess for even the chance at such a thing.” Bardock glared at Vegeta, a look of righteous anger burning away the any traces of a friendship they had once shared. “Then you give it up for…for...” Bardock shook with rage. “You unworthy bastard! You killed MY SON!”
Vegeta ignored the gasp of shock. “Yes. I did it. I killed your son, a son you were never supposed to have, a son who would never know your relationship to him.” Smiling with an evil intent Vegeta added. “I have released you from your immortal torment Bardock. With Goku dead you won't have to continue being so close to the son you were forbidden to embrace. With him, the last ties to that worthless weak mortal whore are gone.” Pushing Bulma back Vegeta whispered “Run to the temple and don't look back.”
“But…”
“GO!” Vegeta lunged forward, drawing Bardock's full attention to himself.
Bulma watched the Demon and Angel lock themselves in battle. There was no way she could help Vegeta just standing there. Summoning her courage she glanced around and saw the huge structure in the distance. This was all she could do.
Vegeta and Bardock circled each other. Vegeta knew Bardock had the advantage. The dark powers of the underworld were useless. All he could count on was his ability to fight. Not too promising when you were up against the only being in all existence that was created for battle.
Time for thinking was gone, and Bardock rushed in with a fierce kick. Vegeta jumped back to avoid the blow. Vegeta threw his punch, but Bardock dropped his body below it and with a sharp upper cut connected with Vegeta's chin. The impact so hard it flew him back and into the ground.
Vegeta didn't have much time to recover. Opening his eyes, he saw Bardock's booted foot coming down toward his head. Vegeta rolled away and came to his feet just in time to be hit in the back by a spinning kick. This time, Vegeta had enough control to hit the ground with his hands and propel himself over to his feet.
Damn it. If all he could do was dodge, this fight wasn't going to lat very long. A burning pain wracked his form and he looked at his shoulder to see the steam rising from his being. This body was already starting to designate from its exposure to the Heavenly plain. “Hurry Bulma…” He thought to himself as he watched Bardock rushing at him yet again. “I am not going to be there to help you this time. You are humanities only chance now.”

Bulma felt like she was going to puke as she came to the stairs of the temple. She was so exhausted that she dropped down to rest on the first step. Drops of perspiration hit the white marble as she choked and gasped for breath. She lifted her head and her blue hair fell from her eyes. The stairs were so high. It was going to take her an eternity to climb to the door, and she was already so tired. There was no way she was ever going to make her way up them.
NO! She had to keep going. It wasn't just her that needed this. Every life on Earth was in her hands. There was no hope if she gave up now. Pushing herself to her feet, Bulma started up the stairs as fast as she could. She ignored the pain wracking her body with each step, causing her muscles to burn. Pain stabbed in stomach and she curled on arm around it. “Please little one, please hang in there for me.” She whispered to the baby she carried. After being thrown from the window there was still the fear the baby was not alright. The injuries she had received were being masked by her determination, still there was only so far it was going to take her.
A foot missed the stair and she slid back and tumbled backwards. Bulma cried out as the first impact landed her hard into the sharp angles of the marble. She reached out using her palms to slow her descent. Coming to rest on the step she felt the tears of frustration assaulting her. Looking up she realized just how far she had fallen. All the time she had lost compounding with her pain, with the situation she now found herself in. Closing her eyes, she rested her head on the step and contemplated the futility of her goal.
“Don't give up now, baby.” Bulma jolted as she heard a familiar voice. Looking up there leaning down next to her was her mother, Bunni Briefs. “You have almost made it to the top, and HE is expecting you.”
“Mom?” Bulma whispered in shock. She could hardly move. It was too impossible to believe. There beside her golden with a soft white radiant light was her mother, Bunni.
A soft hand ran over Bulma's hair. “Yes, Bulma, it's me.” Bunni Brief reached out and took her daughter by the arm and helped her stunned daughter to her feet.
“MOM!” Bulma locked her arms around her mother and found she could not let go. The pain flew from Bulma's limbs. The excitement and joy overshadowing anything negative that tried to assault her sense.
Bunni embraced her daughter back. “Oh baby, I am so sorry I left you like that, but it was my time to go.”
“It's been so hard without you mom.” Bulma cried into her mother's shoulder.
“I know it has been. That is why Vegeta was sent to you.” Bunni pushed Bulma back with gentle hands. “And now you have been sent here.”
“I don't know why and I really don't have a clue what I can do, mom.”
“You can try. That is all you have to do.”

Vegeta stumbled back and grabbed his side with one hand. He wasn't sure what was worse. The pain from his body on a heavenly plane or the pummeling Bardock was giving him.
Bardock didn't give Vegeta much time to contemplate. Grabbing the demon by the neck, the Angel of War twisted his fingers into the fragile region. Bardock let his eye lock with Vegeta's
Vegeta's vision was consumed with the unending hatred that flowed from Bardock. Hatred. How could a being so pure become this corrupt?
“You won't ever understand.” Bardock snarled and tossed Vegeta to the ground like a rag doll. “You have never had a child. There is no way you know how it feels to have your sons ripped from you never to return. I lost Radditz to darkness, and now I have lost Goku to you.”
“So you're going to kill me for that?” Vegeta coughed and staggered to his feet.
“Death? Oh how I wish I could. But what you did is so beyond you that, it hasn't sunk in.” Bardock clinched his fists. “Goku housed within him the ability to take life. No one else.”
Vegeta blinked. “What are you saying?”
“There is no peace now. Not for you, not for anyone. Why do you think this war is coming about? Goku is gone, and the ability for people to transcend planes has been irrevocably broke. Beings that plead for release will not be heeded. Death will not come. This is what you have done.” Bardock spat harshly. “I can only take solace is the fact I can beat you for all eternity.”
Vegeta narrowed his eyes and backed away from the dark predator that stalked him. “Goku is not entirely gone. Before he died he gifted me with his conscious. Part of him still lives.”
“And how is that going to change an entire dimension in chaos? Is that going to form hope in the hearts of humanity?”
“No, but it made me see that what I was doing was wrong. That is why I brought Bulma here. She is the only one left that has a real chance at bartering for the sake of this world.” Vegeta appealed to Bardock.
“You are here trying to save the mortal plane?” Bardock froze a look of disbelief flashing over his features.
“What the fuck else would I be doing here? In this form, it's suicide to come.” Vegeta shouted back. He noticed Bardock's expression and drove forward with his cause. “I just want to undo what I have broken. Bardock, I know you have me now, but help me in this.”
Bardock gnashed his teeth and looked away from the demon. The Angel of war clenched his fists tightly. Here he was in the Heaven and he was thinking of aiding a demon. “Let's get moving. If we hurry we can reach the temple in time to help your woman make her plea.”
“You mean you will help?”
“It's not like the mortals did anything wrong this time. If God wants to irradiate the demons and the angels and start over that's fine. Losing the human race in the crossfire is unfair. So for that, and for the memory of Aieshi, I will do this.”
“Thank you Bardock.”
Bardock reached over and slid his arm around Vegeta, supporting his smaller frame. “Don't thank me just yet.”

Bulma reached the top of the stairs. She looked around for an entrance. “I… don't see anything, mom.”
“You won't, not unless you are invited into His presence will the doorway be shown to you.” Bunni frowned.
Bulma gasped with a slight case of exasperation and a larger case of anxiety. “I thought I was expected? Some savior of humanity I am.”
“There is little more you can do here than pray, Bulma.” Vegeta's voice was weak as Bardock set him down.
“Vegeta!” Bulma turned and rushed to him. She leaned down over him. “You look terrible.”
“I assure you he feels worse.” Bardock crossed his arms as Bunni Briefs came to his side. “What do you suppose we should do now?”
“I don't know.” Bulma whispered.
“I thought bringing her here would have some kind of effect.” Vegeta climbed to his feet. “I knew that this was caused by Goku's death, but I didn't understand at the time the magnitude of the situation.”
“What are you talking about?” Bulma glanced to those around her searching for an answer. After a long pause of silence she rolled her eyes and demanded, “Some one tell me who this Goku was! I am not up to speed here.”
“Goku was the Angel I killed on Earth. Bulma, he was the Angel of Death.”
“Oh my God.” Bulma froze.
“Yes, Vegeta sure had a way of getting his attention in a big way, doesn't he?” Bardock nodded curtly. “Without Goku there is a huge void left.”
“I wish Goku was here now.” Bunni clasped her hands. “He would know how to fix this.”
Vegeta let out a snort of disgust. “He seemed to be the only one who could get through the barrier here as well. I wouldn't mind seeing him either.”
“It's not everyday that an Angel, a mortal and a demon have the same request.”
Everyone froze as the words split the air. And the platform began to light up. Bulma wasn't sure what was supposed to happen but she was not expecting the appearance of the Angel they all believed was dead.
Goku stood before them smiling brightly.
“You rotten son of a bitch!” Vegeta shouted.
“That's not very nice Vegeta.” Goku titled his head “Especially after all the work you did to bring me back.”
“What did I do?”
“You housed my essence within yourself and delivered me back to the holiest place in heaven. Then you prayed for my safe return.” Goku pointed out.
“I do not!” Vegeta shouted again.
“You did to.”
I did NOT!”
Goku shrugged, “Bardock…” he turned with a serious look. “Recall the forces of heaven from the earthly plane.”
“What is He going to do?” Bardock stepped back
“I am suspecting He is going to fix this mess we have made.” Goku laughed.
“Hey, don't get me in on this!” Bunni chimed in.
“How?” Vegeta narrowed his eyes on Goku.
Goku's jaw dropped. “Listen, less then a few minutes ago I was dead. Now I am bringing you the news of an imminent miracle. Sometimes, you just don't stand around and ask questions.”
“You didn't ask Him what He is going to do, did you Goku?” Vegeta smirked
“No.”
Bulma was so filled with relief she wrapped her arms around Vegeta. He returned the motion and awaited her miracle.

A year later.
Vegeta lifted the pack onto his back. “Why do I have to carry him?”
“Because Trunks likes pulling your hair much more than he enjoys yanking on mine.” Bulma lifted their son and slid him into the pack.
“I really would prefer staying home and watching a movie.”
“That will not do you any good. Besides you have put on some weight lately. You need to get out.” Bulma tapped Vegeta in the gut and opened the door. “The fresh air won't hurt Trunks either.” Bulma reached up to hand the baby a plush animal.
“I will have you know I never had to maintain my weight when I was an angel.” Vegeta walked out the door into the sunlight.
“As I recall you didn't have to eat either. You can give that up for a few more days.” Bulma shouted “Dad we're going.”
“Take care you guys!” Dr. Briefs voice drifted from some where in the house as Bulma pulled the door shut.
“I am not about to give up anything!” Vegeta snorted and adjusted the straps on his shoulders.
Bulma giggled and wrapped an arm around his. “Life seems so perfect now.”
Vegeta made his way across the street and stepped into the park. “After everything we have been through to get here, we deserve it.”
“I love you, Vegeta.” Bulma looked up at him with adoring eyes.
“I would love you more if you could get you son's fingers out of my hair. He is pulling again.” Vegeta stepped to the left a bit. “oww oww..”
“Stop whining.”
Radditz watched the couple pass without even noticing him as he sat forlorn and dejected on a park bench.
“Need some company?”
He looked up at to see Goku. “Hello, brother. What are you up to?”
“Same old, same old,” Goku kicked back and looked to the sky.
“How is Dad?” Radditz sighed
“I just checked on him and Bellona. He doesn't remember anything about us, but he is happy with her. That is all that matters.”
“I guess so. I can't believe he became a mortal.”
“It does seem like the thing to do these days.” Goku yawned and stretched. “Have you decided to atone for you sins an come help me with my work?”
“Are you insane? Being evil is still way more fun.” He paused and then added, “I almost got it that time.” Radditz moped. “I was so close.”
Goku shook his head and laughed. “You tried to base the Apocalypse on love. I didn't see it coming, but you had to realize that Vegeta would never let Bulma die. Love doesn't work that way. The plan was doomed to failure.”
“Yeah, I will think of something else really devious evil and sneaky next time.” Radditz smiled.
“Everyone has to have their dreams.”
