Chapter 34 - Unlikely Heros

Life started to slip from Bulma's body. The hands that once struggled to free herself started to become limp. She was losing this fight. Her knee's buckled under her and she slid toward the floor. She opened her blue pleading eyes, but still Vegeta did not relinquish his hold. This was it, then. Vegeta had been changed to an evil so pure that even her love could not reach him. Closing her eyes, Bulma prepared to slip into eternal darkness.
It was in this desperate moment that she felt the presence behind her; something warm and comforting caused her to open her eyes once more to see bright light radiating from behind her. She watched Vegeta's face lift from hers in the slowest of motions. That was the furthest his movement could get before a large fist flew out, and Bulma was thrown free. She choked and gasped from her place on the floor, pulling in large volumes of air in great heaving breaths while life flowed back into her limbs. Looking up, she saw a glowing being that was no doubt another angel. This was as Vegeta had once been. He had the same aura around him. The dark eyes and hair were belying his heavenly nature.
“Brother.” Radditz applauded. The sound drew Bulma's attention to the creature across the room. “You have reduced yourself to violence. I am so proud.”
Kakkarot ignored him as he stepped protectively in front of Bulma. He moved his attention to Vegeta. The dark angel was pulling himself to his feet. “Have you forgotten who this woman is to you?”
Vegeta growled and glared at Goku, offering nothing. He angled his body around watching Goku's movements. The Angel of Death was riveted on Vegeta's every movement, allowing him no opening for an attack.
“Radditz you are beyond evil to do this.” Goku could not stop himself from shouting. “I still don't understand what you hope to possibly gain through your actions. In this form it won't take long for Vegeta to become powerful enough to turn on you. Don't you realize he can destroy you?”
Radditz shrugged. “We all gotta go some time, but won't it be fitting to live long enough and recklessly enough to see all humanity crumble before you.”
Goku turned to stare at his brother in complete confusion.
Vegeta didn't miss the hesitation and attacked. The first motion was a drop kick that sent Goku diving to the side. Vegeta followed with a flurry of punches that left the other angel able to do little more than block.
Bulma retreated to the doorway, but found her self unable to leave. She could not abandon Vegeta, not like this.
Goku reached smoothly across his body and swept away Vegeta's rapid-fire blows. Then, in one fluid motion, he brought up his opposite hand, palm first, to connect with Vegeta's chin. The impact caused the room to flare in an explosive white light. Vegeta flew backwards sliding on a carpet into the wall the remnants of the attack's electrical output flying around his dark form.
This did not deter the black winged Vegeta. He slowly climbed back to his feet. This time he did not wait for an opening. Vegeta attacked again.
Goku braced his feet and crossed his arms preparing for the impact. It did little good as the two slid across the floor and into the window. The glass shattered in tiny shards through out the room as the two toppled from the second story.
Bulma screamed Vegeta's name as she disappeared from view. She rushed forward, but suddenly felt herself being drawn back. An arm rose to block out the falling pieces of glass that rained down around her. Looking up she narrowed her eyes in fury.
Radditz held the woman close. “Don't worry. I don't want you to die just yet.”
“You could have fooled me.” Bulma hissed trying to jerk her body from his grip.
“Your still not upset I turned your lover against you are you?” Radditz rolled his eyes. “If it makes you feel any better, it was only a ploy to get Goku to arrive here to save you.”
“Goku? You mean the other angel?” Bulma stammered.
“Not just any angel. That is the Angel of Death. The most revered of all Angels.” Radditz basked in Bulma's expression of shock and confusion. “Ahh yes what a twisted web. To think you were saved by the Angel of Death.” Radditz dragged her to the gapping hole in the wall and pushed her forward.
The outdoor lighting flickered as the two beings fought against each other. They seemed almost deadlocked in their abilities.
“They are evenly matched aren't they?” Radditz mused seemingly reading Bulma's mind. “Perhaps it's time I turn the tide a bit.”
Bulma didn't like the way he said that. It sent her skin crawling. “What are you?” She didn't get any further before Radditz gave her one tiny shove forward out the window.
“Oops. Clumsy me.” Radditz shrugged as he watched her fall.
Bulma screamed. She wasn't that afraid of the fall. It would just break bones at worse. It could not kill her, but the baby. Bulma worried franticly what would happen to the baby when she hit the patio below.
Goku twisted at the sound of her scream. He could hear her prayer for the safety of her child. He made a move toward her but Vegeta lunged into him. Concentration on the battle was lost as Goku simply struggled to free himself.
Bulma hit the ground with a sickening thud. The pain was everywhere. She tried to push up on her hands, but it was instantly apparent her wrist was broken. Blood ran down her face from a cut on her forehead as well. The most heartbreaking and fearful pain of all was the twisting one that ripped through her stomach. “Oh GOD NO!!!” She wasn't sure of the damage, but all her fears centered on her unborn child.
Goku wanted to help her. It was painful to be restrained. It never hit him how easily Vegeta was now thwarting his attacks. One swift hand on the side of his face tossed Goku into the pool as if he were no more than a weightless rag doll.
Bursting from the water, he saw Vegeta hovering over it. The arms were crossed and the dark face was eerily confident.
“So, now do you realize?” Vegeta's monstrously twisted voice resounded through the yard. “You have no chance of winning against me, Angel. This world is full of pain and suffering. This plane of existence became more obtuse and corrupt by the day making the evil with in it grow more and more powerful.”
“You're wrong; as long as there is a prayer in the heart of one mortal being we will have the strength we need to fight.” Goku treaded water and looked dup at Vegeta with weary saddened eyes. “Have you forgotten that Vegeta?”
“No, I have not; prayers for greed and self-gain. People want things for petty sad reasons. Rarely is there a noble request made. Only then do you get your power.” Vegeta reached down and seized Goku by the hair. He threw the faded Angel to the stone-worked surface at the pool's side.
Goku rose to his feet and stared at Vegeta. The dark aura was huge now. It engulfed everything around him. The power of this dark being was frightening, even to an Angel as powerful as Goku.
“Tell me Goku,” Vegeta sneered, “all those people you have saved and helped throughout your immortal life, all the prayers you have answered and dreams you have brought to fruition.” The power continued to grow until Vegeta stood over the Angel of Death in a dominant stance. “Tell me, now in the moment before you reach oblivion. Where are the prayers for your safety? Who prays for YOU?”
Goku sighed and hung his head. It was true and there was no use in arguing the point. Very little prayers were spoken to aid and strengthen the Angelic force such as him. “So this is it Vegeta, you have chosen this path and there is no dissuading you from it.”
“None.” The blast hit Goku and the blackness enveloped him.
Vegeta watched the destruction of Goku's angelic form with calm calculation. It was then the shining golden beams of light began to drift around Vegeta, each one of these orbs touching Vegeta's skin dissipating his dark aura.
“In my final act I am going to use my power to restore your humanity.” Goku's voice drifted in the winds around Vegeta. “I can not save you from this existence you have chosen, but I will make sure you can clearly see the right and wrong that you do.”
Vegeta screamed as if he were being burned, the tiny drops of light restoring his conscious to his demon form and burning his twisted mind with guilt at his previous actions against Bulma.
Radditz felt his hands clinching into fists at his side. His dark eyes were scanning for a trace of his brother. He reached out with all his ability trying to find some speck of Goku. It all came up empty. The Angel of Death was gone. He stood silent for a long moment. The dark blackness of his eyes moved to looking to the sky.
Bulma struggled to her knees and looked across the lawn to Vegeta. He was thrashing around wildly as if fighting with an invisible foe. He dropped to the ground withering in pain. The sounds of his screams echoed through out her heart. She wanted to block them out. For what he had done to her, for the danger he had placed her and their unborn child in, she wanted to hate him. Turning her head away she felt tears forming. Bulma could not turn her back on him. She loved him beyond anything. Coming to her feet she made her way to his side.
She leaned over him, but was afraid to touch him. Vegeta had ceased his struggles and lay panting on the ground. “Vegeta…” She whispered. The tears from her eyes were dripping on to his shoulder and rolling along his skin to the ground. “Oh my Vegeta, what is happening to you?”
And then the world erupted. The sky swirled with black clouds and the ground shook. The force was so great she was thrown down over Vegeta's body.
Vegeta locked his arm around her and forced open his eyes. “I am sorry Bulma. I… am so sorry.”
“What is going on Vegeta?” Bulma shuddered with the feeling of encroaching horror.
The sound of Radditz laughter caused Vegeta to sit up swiftly shoving Bulma behind his ebony wings. “What have you done Radditz!”
“I have achieved my dream. I have to thank you for your help.” Radditz bowed to the couple on the ground before him, his great black coat sweeping around him in the gale force winds.
“What dream?” Vegeta rose to his feet. He swayed and placed a hand to his head. “What is going on?”
Bulma rose to support Vegeta. She slid her arm around his waist and glared at the other dark Angel.
“Look for yourself what your actions have brought about.” Radditz motioned to the sky.
Vegeta lifted his head and felt his heart drop to his stomach. There before them for all to see with in the visual realm the forces of heaven and hell were clashing. Those that had been his allies and foes alike battled. The world glowed of red and black.
“What is happening?” Bulma whimpered clinging tighter to Vegeta.
Vegeta shook his head in horror. “It can't be. It's too soon.”
Radditz smiled and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Throughout eternity I have tried to bring about this battle, to evoke the beginnings of the Apocalypse, but always to be thwarted, until now.”
“BUT HOW?” Vegeta raged pulling from Bulma to seize hold of Radditz. “HE would never go this far!”
“One of his most devoted followers who he has bestowed the gift of humanity on. The very one He had gifted with the wonders of a new life has turned from his grace and become a demon. Then within the space of a heart beat that very fallen angel turned on his most cherished of angels and struck him down without mercy.” Radditz's voice was calm and soft. The heavy facts had left Vegeta shaking. “You said the words yourself. Who prays for you? It seems your words did not fall on deaf ears and so, thanks be to you, and the end of the world is now at hand. My deepest desire has become a reality.”
Vegeta turned his head in shame. He could sense Bulma's fear. In this new demon form, just being near Bulma was burning his senses. The gift Goku had given him caused him to smolder within. Like water hitting a hot pan, the goodness within his evil body was agony. He understood the trauma the Earth herself was feeling in these final moments, when one was at war with oneself.
“So now you see.” Radditz turned. “I am off to get a better view to watch the arrival of oblivion.
Radditz disappeared from sight, and Vegeta slumped to the ground.
“Vegeta?” Bulma's voice came from behind him. “What is going on?” Silence was her only answer. Narrowing her eyes she reached out to shake him. “Damn it, Vegeta, tell me what is happening?”
“Just as he said. It's the end of the world. I turned on my brethren and for my action all humanity is going to pay.”
“That can't be…” Bulma looked to the red sky. The black clouds swirling as lightening crashed in to a tree near her. She could hear the screams from the city as people evacuated their homes seeking places to hide. “But you are an angel! There has to be something we can do?”
“I am a demon now. I gave my mortal soul to Radditz.” There the words were spoken. Bulma now know the truth. “I did it to save your life.”
“To save my life? There was nothing wrong with me.”
Vegeta shot around so fast Bulma could not get away from him. He locked on to her wrist. “Radditz told me, the visit with the Doctor, what you were so scared to tell me. That you were dying. I KNEW.”
“Vegeta.” Bulma hung her head. “The doctor didn't say I was dying. It's the opposite in fact. I am pregnant.” Vegeta dropped his hold on her arm. “I am pregnant with your child.”
“A baby? Are you sure?” The knowledge was like a plague on his brain. “I am such a fool!”
“There has got to be more time, Vegeta.” Bulma clasped her arms together. “Can't you go to Him? Ask for forgiveness?”
“Not in the form I am in. I would be destroyed before I got a few steps through the gates of heaven.” Vegeta looked down. “But I can take you there.”
“Take me?” Bulma put a hand to her chest. “Are you kidding?”
“Bulma, this is a battle between Heaven and Hell. The souls of all humanity are teetering in the middle. They don't deserve this. Our child does not deserve this.” He reached out and touched her stomach. “A mother's prayers for the safety of her child are one of the strongest things in existence. It can bring about miracles.”
“Then take me.” Bulma was trembling in fear. Wrapping her arms around him she sighed. “I can't believe the fate of the world is resting on me."
