Chapter 9

Videl awoke two days later in a bed in the base's med bay. She sat up and looked around frantically. Chander had fallen asleep in the chair next to her bed and Danawi leaned against the wall on the other side. When she did not awaken after being in the regen tank they were worried about her so they sat watch over her in the med bay.

“Where am I?” She asked holding her head since the rush of sitting up made her dizzy. Chander shot awake.

“You're in the med bay. Frieza beat you within an inch of your life, literally.” Chander answered.

“Oh yeah.” Videl mumbled she looked up to see Danawi and Chander both looking away blushing. She wondered what was wrong when she looked down and realized she was naked and the blanket was not covering her chest. She pulled the blanket up around her chest and bit her lip. `Oh shit! They know!' She thought in a panic.

“Guys I can explain.” She said. That's when she noticed that Errando wasn't there. She was confused. He was always with Chander and Danawi. “Where's Errando?”

Chander's face fell and he shook his head. Videl felt her heart constrict and she knew he was gone. “He lost too much blood they couldn't save him.” Chander answered solemnly. Videl wanted to cry for the loss of her friend, but her training had taught her not too show emotion so she just hung her head.

As the three mourned for their comrade in silence Gohan walked in. “What's your name?” He asked staring at Videl intensely.

Videl's head shot up immediately and her heart stopped as Gohan stared at her with those intense eyes boring through her like never before. She stuttered as she stared back at him and held the blanket tighter. “V….videl.”

Gohan just stared for a moment before he spoke again. “Are you who you said you were at the start of training?”

Videl looked up at him her features hardening as if she was preparing herself for a battle which at the moment she was fighting an emotional one. “Yes Hercule is my father, but he has no son and he has pneumonia. I couldn't lose him!” She said almost angrily.

Gohan could hear the pain and anguish in Videl's voice. He hated being the bad guy, but she had deceived him and deeper down he felt he deserved a rebuttal. “You knew that being a skirmisher usually means certain death. So either way your father dies, why don't you tell the truth?” He almost growled still feeling betrayed.

Videl gritted her teeth. Gohan was right she hadn't done this for her father she had done for herself and it was time to admit it. “I did it because I wanted to fight!” Chander, Danawi, and Gohan all gave her a puzzling look. “I would watch my father train when I was young and wish I could do the same, but it's not ok for girls to want that!” She spat bitterly.

Gohan stared at the floor almost ashamed before he looked back up and spoke. “All of you need to get on your dress uniforms. The King is coming to honor us.”
Chander and Danawi stood up straight as they shouted “Yes sir” and headed out the room to change. Videl did not move she just stared intensely at Gohan.

He turned to leave. “All of us.” Videl was surprised and confused by his comment before he smiled a little. “I'll have a nurse bring you your dress uniform. Be on deck ASAP.”

Videl's heart soared as Gohan left the room, he had smiled at her. Then his words hit her full force. She was going to meet the King. Who probably knew about what happened! `Oh shit.'

Videl stepped out onto the deck in her dress uniform and she was shocked to see what was left of their unit already assembled at attention on the deck. In front of them was a man with a flame like mane whose very presence seemed to command their full attention. The way he carried himself and how he dressed immediately told her he was the famed King Vegeta whom she had only heard of in awed reverence from earthlings who actually met him. Next to him was a taller man with wild hair, a beautiful regally dressed woman who she assumed to be the human Queen and a little boy with lavender colored hair whose expression mirrored the King's.

They seemed to be waiting for something, but she had no idea what. Suddenly she felt a presence behind her and she spun to see Gohan, Chander, and Danawi all behind her. She stared at them confused.

“Ready Videl?” Gohan asked standing beside her. Gohan almost blushed at their proximity, but he reminded himself that she was just a soldier like any other. He would be the first to admit that it was much harder to be a comrade with a girl than it was with a guy especially when he already felt a deep connection with her.

The four of them marched out onto the deck and when they reached the King and his entourage they knelt with their hands over their fists to show their loyalty. “Look up.” Videl looked up at King Vegeta as he stood before the four of them. He turned to address the entire unit. “All of you honorable soldiers bear witness for you are in the presence of true greatness.” He motioned to the four who knelt before him. “These soldiers have proven their worth above and beyond the call of duty. Chander and Danawi rescued all of you from certain death. Your Commander achieved a level of power men like me and the General only dream of and this young woman.”

Videl cringed as the King revealed to the whole unit her secret.

“Videl. If not for her courage and her sacrifice then more than likely none of you would be here today. She is only human, but she stood up to Frieza!” Videl looked up at the King and he smirked at her. “That takes more bravery then most men ever possess. Rise as saviors of the kingdom.”

The four of them stood up and the entire unit cheered them. The Queen walked over to Videl. Videl dropped her eyes, but the Queen touched her chin causing her to look up.

The Queen smiled softly at her and touched her own stomach which Videl finally noticed was rounded by pregnancy. “It is a girl.” She said simply.

“I would consider myself blessed if my daughter was anything like you.” Videl gave her a genuine smile as the Queen held her hand as if they were sisters reunited after a long time apart.

The King's face was stern as he walked up and put his hand on his Queen's back, but his words were kind and considerate. “We would be honored if you would be the child's godmother? Only one other woman in my life has ever challenged the rules and I love her for it.” The King glanced at the Queen who grinned at him.

Videl was stunned by his request and she stuttered. “I would….be…be honored you highness.”

The King spoke louder for all to hear. “Let it be known that from this day forward if any able woman can and wishes to be a soldier she may be permitted to do so by order of law.”

Videl's heart soared. She could now be what she had always dreamed, a fighter, but at the same time her mind floated back to her father and she felt a panic run through her. She had no idea how he had faired on Earth while she was away and she needed to see him.

The General now addressed the four of them. “You four are entitled to any office you wish.” He put his hand on Gohan's shoulder and smiled. “Well done son.”

Gohan's face lit up at his father's admiration. “Thank you father.”

Videl turned to the General. “With all due respect sir, before I take a position I must attend to my father's needs. He is not well.”

“Of course a shuttle will take you back to Earth whenever you are ready.”

“Thank you sir.” Videl turned to leave. “But, make sure when your father is well again you come back for your rewarded position.” The General grinned at her.

Videl smiled radiantly and nodded her head. “I will sir.” Videl smiled at Chander and Danawi as she left the deck and they shouted their good byes. Videl looked back once more before heading to the shuttle bay to see if Gohan was going to say good bye, but he wasn't even looking at her. She sighed and left the deck.

Gohan turned his head just as she disappeared through the deck doors. `You let her get away.' His mind scolded him and he instantly felt his heart fall without her near him. It was as if a piece of his soul was gone too.
