"Diamond Heart"

Chapter 6: What there is

"My King," beseeched the distraught Goku. "Please, I have always been faithful! Aid me in this!"

The ruler sat on his throne, deep in thought. "General. I would help, but I can spare no man. Akros is marching on Denain as we speak. Fellard told me of your promise of service. I have heard your tale and I believe Bulma is in no immediate danger."

"But she is in danger nonetheless!"

"A dragon with motive is to be feared, yes. But Denain is in need of your help Goku. Should you defeat Akros, I will send an entire army to search for Bulma. I will spare no expense."

"I cannot. Majesty, I must look for her now."

"I thought you would say that. General, if you leave now it is an act of treason. I will be forced to kill you along with your sons."

"King! That is monstrous!"

"It is law, General. Stay. Fight. And I will give you an army to search for your beloved. What will it be, General?"

Goku hung his head in defeat. "I will crush Akros."

The days tuned into months and the months into a year.

The War never ceased, always was General Goku in battle. Both his children were now enlisted; Gohan was training to become a warrior and Trunks worked in the medical ward.

While Goku worried about the safety of his family and nation, little did he know that Bulma thought less and less of him each day.

::::::::::::::::

"Dragon, tell me another tale." Bulma asked lazily lying on a plush couch, most likely from the Freeza Dynasty.

* Dragon-heart, I tire of recounting numerous ballads for you. Tell me one of your land. Tell me one of dragons.*

"Alright… Let me think. Well, a long time ago the most beautiful princess in the land was captured by a nasty dragon. As all people know dragons like pretty things and will steal these things so that only he may posses them; dragons are very selfish creatures. So being as the Princess was most beautiful of any other thing, beast, or human, the dragon Morag had to have her to himself. Morag swept down in the castle courtyard a plucked the princess from her gardens.

"The King was dismayed. He sent out a decree to all the lands proclaiming that whoever could rescue his daughter could marry her. And seeing as how the princess was the most beautiful in the land many a man tried to save her from the clutches of the dragon Morag.

"Morag killed hundreds of men, defending what he had captured. Now Morag could have saved himself a good deal of trouble had he just turned the Princess over to the king after the first 78 men or so. But dragons, as well as being greedy and selfish, are quite stubborn. Plus Morag never had to leave his precious treasure unguarded to hunt for food seeing as how so many princes, knights, and nobles were willing to volunteer to become supper.

"Now after hundreds of men died at the claws of Morag the numbers of men who tried to save the beautiful princess steadily decreased. And the dragon had to kill sheep for dinner every other night or so, to the relief of the Princess. However on man was quite determined to make the princess his bride. He was skilled in all battle techniques and had been a hero in many wars. When the King heard that this great warrior was out to save his daughter he bestowed weapons and supplies to the brave knight.

"So the knight set off on his trek to the Dark Mountains where the greedy, selfish, and stubborn Morag lived. The knight did a great many good deeds on his way. He saved a village from the shadow wolves, saved wizards from evil trolls, and even rescued little kittens from trees.

"The knight finally reached the mountain where the dragon held the Princess captive. He climbed to the cave entrance and peered into the darkness. There he saw a rather large fierce looking dragon and a beautiful and bored looking princess. From the looks of Morag, the knight knew he could not defeat him with shield and sword so he formed a plan. The brave warrior noticed a mirror in the back of the cave and stepped into view.

"Morag noticed the knight a began to ponder of ways to kill the foolish knave when the knight made eye-contact with Morag, gasped, and dropped his sword.

" `Scared, little human?' laughed the awesome Morag. `No, I am awed, by your beauty.' Replied the Knight.

"This was a new one to the dragon, so curiously he decided not to kill the knight immediately. The knight continued with his ploy `Why do you admire other pretty things when they could never even hope to compare with your beauty. Look for yourself!' The knight pointed at the large mirror at the other end of the cave.

"The giant dragon walked over and peered at himself through the mirror. It was true what the knight had said. The dragon was beautiful; his fiery eyes shone brighter than the sun, and his scales where the color of fire and glowed as such. If Morag were not so frightening he would be such a creature of beauty many people would try to steal him for themselves as he had the Princess. The princess's beauty paled at the sight of Morag. While Morag gazed at himself the knight stole the princess and raced from the mountain as fast as he could. Some people still say Morag is in the mountain starring at himself in awe. But we do know that when the knight returned the princess to her father the king was overjoyed. He held the wedding on that very day and proclaimed the knight a prince and heir of the kingdom"

* Bah! That story was ridiculous! *

"Really? How so? That story happens to be in Denain's historical library."

* Little dragon-heart, you have so much to learn about our kind. For example, dragons cannot see reflection. We see what there is. *

"What do you mean, Vegeta?"

* You must be dragon to understand, little one. Humans and dragons see things so differently. You will soon learn this. *

"Why am I not dragon yet, Vegeta?"

* Because you haven't wished to be. *

Bulma clutched her head. "Vegeta, my head feels so strange."

* Must be one of your human illnesses. Nothing. *

Bulma clutched her head in frustration. "No, Vegeta. Something is amiss. I… I don't feel like myself."

* I am positive it is nothing, dragon-heart. *

"There's something missing in my head, Vegeta. Where did I know that tale from?"

* What is there to miss? You probably heard that tale in your travels.*

"What travels?"

The dragon hissed in annoyance. * How should I know? *

"Why am I here, again? Where did I come from?"

* Why should it matter? You are here now. Are you not happy? *

"No I am happy. That's the problem, I'm not supposed to be happy here. Vegeta? What don't I remember?! What am I missing!?"

*Calm yourself, dragon-woman. *

"I will not! What have you done to me?"

The dragon lifted up his head and roared in anguish and frustration.

* I almost had you! *

:::::::::::::::

"General! Congratulations!"

"Great!"

"Where's the celebration ale?"

Cries rang out as Goku's army marched into Ithio from a victorious battle. There had been too much blood spilt in this battle. Goku feared telling women of their spouses' death. He feared worse that one day someone would tell him of the death of his.

Bulma. The thought of her was painful. A full year without her was so much to bear. He prayed for her each day, hoping beyond hope that the dragon was the least of his fears.

"General! Come quick!" a voice shouted by his side. Why did they bother him? Couldn't the see his pain? Didn't they know about * her. *

Goku glanced down to see a young healer standing beside him looking very distressed.

"What is it?" he barked at the foolish youth.

"Your son, Trunks…"

All the anger drained from Goku's face. It was replaced with fear and worry.

"Where?" his voice quaked.

"The South Medical Bay."

Never needing another word Goku ran.

:::::::::::::

"Gohan, your father will be here soon. The war party just came back."

Gohan nodded numbly while holding his brother's hand. Trunks was so sick. Too sick. The healers couldn't do anything; they had never seen this illness.

Damn this war! It only caused grief and anguish.

"Hang on Trunks, you gotta help find Mom, remember? Mom's counting on you to rescue her!"

Trunks eyes rested on the ceiling, unmoving.

"Go-Gohan." His voice rasped in desperation.

Gohan's eyes darted to Trunks' lips. It was the first time he had spoken in days.

"Yea, little brother. I'm here."

His mouth opened and closed as trying to form words.

"Mo-mom…"

"Yea, I know Trunks. I know." Then Gohan let the tears run freely down his face. Gohan, an eleven-year-old boy-warrior, cried for the loss of his mother.- Because had their mother been there, none of this would have happened. Mothers could chase away armies of monsters, defeat any sickness, and repair their crumbling family.

Trunks' hand became colder and slowly the blood stopped flowing. Gohan long held his brother's hand after the smaller boy passed into the next world.

::::::::::::::

Goku rushed in.

In a small cot, he saw his youngest son.

His dead son.

The strong warrior broke down on the dirt floor and wept bitterly. A dragon had stolen his wife, disease took his son, and he'd be damned if he would let anything else come near his family.

He'd be damned.

Okay, depressing chapters are my forte. Y'all knew that!

Don't let this chapter get ya down about the fic. As many of you know, from reading my previous work, I actually have a point in all this. It may be depressing in some points and in others it very may well just suck, but damn it!- I like my plots!

Thanks for reading!
