Tales of The Lost Future
"Shanaa! Come down here please!" Serena shouted from the bottom of the stairs, waiting for her daughter as she thundered down the stairs with Goten in tow. "Yes, Mommy?" She purred childishly, giggling as Goten put his arms around her. "Have you done your chores, hime-chan?" She asked. "Chores, Kaasan?" Shanaa stared at her mother and watched her roll her eyes. "You know, clean out the gym, water the in-house garden, make your bed?" Shanaa giggled uncontrollably at the last one. Her face turned scarlet as she nodded. "Hai, Kaasan. I made my bed, but.... um, it got 'un-made' about an hour ago..." Serena raised an eyebrow at Goten, who was too busy looking the other way, trying not to smile. "I see. Well, perhaps you should be a bit more careful where you play, hime-chan." She shot her daughter a knowing glance and walked away. Goten looked down at Shanaa and started to laugh. "It got 'un-made'? That's a new one. I've heard people say some funny things to cover up their sex lives, but this one tops them all." Shanaa lightly punched his arm and shook her head. "Shut up, will you? My mother may know, but my father and grandfather will have your hide if they find out!" She hissed.
Goten just laughed and led her into the kitchen, greeting Ryoma with a smile. "Hey there, Imoto." Ryoma said softly, nodding at Shanaa. "Heyas!" She smiled and hugged him a little, watching him shake his head at Goten. "Does my mother know what you two are up to these days?" He asked. Shanaa turned red. "How do you..." "These walls aren't as thick as they ought to be, little one." He grinned as she turned a violent shade of purple and laughed at Goten's shocked, white face. "I'm not stupid, you know. I CAN tell the difference between a moan and a shout of pain." He grinned wider and shook his head. "What's going on in here?" Trunks asked, holding his cell phone in one hand, a black book in the other. "Nothing, Daddy. Nothing." Shanaa answered quickly, not looking at her father. Trunks raised an eyebrow and spun her around, scanning her red face. "You lying to me, Kodomo?" He asked. Shanaa shook her had. "No, honestly Tousan. Nothings going on. Right, Ryoma?" She looked over at Ryoma for help and he nodded. "Nothing at all." Trunks looked a little suspicious and left the room, calling one of his employees on the cell phone. "Sheesh, that was close..." Shanaa murmured, looking a little paler than before. "I don't want to know what he would do to me if he knew we were screwing around." Goten grumbled, taking a seat at the table. "I know exactly what he would do. He'd tell Granpa and they'd both come after you and rip your nuts off." Shanaa looked over at him and smirked. "I said I DIDN'T want to know, Shanaa. Thanks a lot."
Shanaa grinned and walked away from the two males, heading to the in-house garden where Vejita sat scarfing down a large ham sandwich. "Hey hime-chan." He said softly, taking a huge bite of the sandwich. "Hi Granpa. Is that sandwich big enough?" she asked, pointing at the two and a half foot long sandwich. Vejita shook his head. "Nope." He answered, spraying bits of meat and bread on the table in front of him. Shanaa gave a look of disgust and rolled her eyes, wandering over to the lake in the middle of the garden. She sat down on the grass and stared hard at the glassy surface of the lake. She had been out here the night before, listening to Ryoma's stories of the future he had come from.
One of them came back and played over in her mind.
<><><><><><><><> ;<><>
A ten year old Ryoma sat on the side of a crumbled building, watching his mother and uncle Trunks work on re-building a bridge that had been destroyed by the android twins, #17 and #18. He smiled when he saw a yellow butterfly fluttering just above his head and stood up to catch it. "Ryoma-kun! Don't touch the butterfly." Came Serena's soft voice. "But why not, Kaasan? I want to play with him." Serena smiled and put the box of tools down, flying down from the bridge to scoop her son up. "You mustn't touch it's wings, little one. If the powder on it's wings comes off, he wont be able to fly." She purred, kissing his cheek. "Like me?" He smiled up at her when she giggled. "You're a different story, sweetheart. You can't control your chi yet." She answered, floating back up to the concrete bridge, setting him down so she could continue her work. "Uncle Trunks?" Ryoma said softly, tilting his head to the side curiously. "Hai?" Trunks answered, not looking up from his work. "Can I help you?" Trunks looked up and wiped his brow. "Sure, c'mere kiddo." Ryoma smiled and ran over to help his uncle, yelping as he stumbled and fell over the broken side of the bridge. "RYOMA!!" Serena shouted, jumping off to follow him. When she touched down and didn't see him, she looked up to see her son, wide eyed and hovering off of the ground. "Kaasan! I'm doing it! I'm flying!" He shouted happily, waving his arms like a bird. "Indeed..." Serena shook her head and smiled, pushing off the ground to put her arms tight around him. "You scared the daylights out of me, Kodomo. Don't EVER run up here again, alright?" She said sternly. Ryoma nodded and flew back up to help Trunks with his work.
<><><><><><><><> ;<><>
Shanaa smiled at the thought of Ryoma's happy memory. It would have scared her to death if she had fallen off the side of a bridge and she probably would have hit the ground instead. "Imoto?" She turned around and smiled at Ryoma, almost too eager to ask him to tell another story as she allowed him to sit next to her. "What's up? Are you alright out here by yourself?" He asked. Shanaa blinked. "Alone? Granpa is right--" She paused as she turned around again, finding that Vejita was no longer in the garden. "I'm fine, actually." She smiled again and watched him smile at her. "Just thinking?" She nodded. "I used to do that a lot after Kaasan died. I'd run away and find somewhere to just sit and think. It's actually the reason why I decided to come here, where my Kaasan is still alive." Ryoma gazed at the lake and leaned against back on his hands. "So, what were ya thinking about?" He asked, turning back to her. Shanaa smiled. "The story you told last night. The one where you learned to fly. I liked listening to you last night, by the way." He smiled a bit wider and ruffled her hair. "Good to know." He sighed and looked around, admiring the bushes and arrangements of random, exotic flowers. "I was wondering, if you'd be willing to tell me another story, Nii-San." Ryoma's head jerked a little as she startled him. "Um... sure. Yeah, I'll tell you another one." He smiled and sat up, aware that she was starting at him with big eyes.
"Let's see..."
<><><><><><><><> ;<><>
Ryoma sat on his mother's lap, watching the strangers around him. He had been instructed not to say anything to anyone, but seeing as he was only four, they couldn't really expect him to sit and be quiet for very long. "Kaasan." He said softly, looking up at Serena. "Hai? What is it, little one?" She whispered. "Who is the man in the pink shirt and why does he look so mad?" He asked. Vejita turned his head towards the question and narrowed his eyes. "Shh. Don't say that--" "Yeah you little brat. You need to teach that child some goddamn manners, lady." Vejita growled. Serena bit her lip and nodded, turning away from Vejita. A tear slipped down her cheek and hit Ryoma's. This made the little boy angry. He pushed off of his mother's lap and stomped over to Vejita. "Listen mister! You made my mommy cry! Say you're sorry!" He yelled, pointing his finger in Vejita's face. Vejita snarled and moved to backhand Ryoma. "VEJITA!" Bulma shouted, standing up. She came over and picked Ryoma up, handing him back to his mother. "You should know better than to hit a child!" She growled, narrowing her eyes at Vejita. "SAY YOU'RE SORRY YOU BIG DUMB MEANIE!" Ryoma shouted from Serena's arms. Vejita just glared and mumbled something that sounded a bit like 'sorry my ass'.
<><><><><><><><> ;<><>
Shanaa rolled around on the grass, laughing hard as Ryoma finished his story. "That's rich!" She cried, sitting up to wipe her eyes. He smiled. "Glad you think so. I'm still a little mad that he never really apologized, though." Shanaa grinned and told him to wait there while she ran and got something. She came back, half dragging Vejita behind her. "Apologize for making my future mom cry." She hissed, her hands on her hips. "What--" "Say you're sorry, you big dumb meanie!" Ryoma laughed halfway through the sentence and Vejita rolled his eyes. "I'm getting to old for these games." He muttered, walking out of the garden. "That's his way of saying he's sorry. He says the same thing to me all the time." She smiled at Ryoma and helped him stand. "Come on, I think Angel made lunch." She purred, leading him back to the dining room where the rest of the house sat eating. "About time. Where were you two?" Serena asked as they sat down. "In the garden, talking." Shanaa answered. "Uh-huh. That was MY excuse for Daddy. Come on you two, are you hiding something from me?" Serena asked, raising an eyebrow as Trunks turned and stared at them. Shanaa's face went red. "KAASAN! You know damn well that I'm going with Goten!" She shouted, looking bewildered that her mother would even suggest something like that. "Oh that's right. You two un-made your bed this morning. I forgot." Serena grinned and watched Trunks' face turn purple. "NANI?!" He shouted, standing up. Shanaa slid down in her seat and stared at her father. "T-Tousan... don't get mad, please? I don't like it when you get mad..." She whimpered, sinking lower in the chair. "You and Goten are... are screwing? This has gone TOO far!" He roared. "Oh, Koibito, stop shouting. You sound like Daddy. You're even repeating what he said when he found out about us." Trunks sat back down and stared at Serena. She was right. He WAS repeating his father's words.
"Gomennasai." He murmured, lifting his chopsticks. Shanaa peeked up from under the table and regained her spot, coughing a little as Goten stared, openmouthed. She hadn't really expected him to blow up like that and was getting stared at by the rest of the table. "Er... great lunch, aunt Angel." She murmured, blushing slightly. "Thanks Shanaa." Angel smiled at the younger female and glared at her twin as if to say 'don't pester her so much, Trunks!'. Shanaa finished her lunch quickly and hurried to the in-house gym. She pushed a few buttons on a console and changed into her training clothes. After pushing another button, she readied herself and smirked when a couple of battle droids her father had customized, popped out of the floor. She beat the first few and waited as the others randomly appeared, taking hit after hit and never wearing down. She spun around in the air to kick one that had snuck up on her and kicked Ryoma square in the jaw.
"Droids, OFF!" She shouted, running to see if her brother was ok. He looked over at her, covering his mouth. Shanaa could see blood dripping from under his hand and forced him to move his palm out of the way. "Oh, Nii-san. I'm so sorry." She winced and stared at the corner of his mouth. She had split it about a half inch down and it was bleeding profusely. "Hang on, alright? I'll get Grandma." He nodded and watched her go, waiting until she was completely out of hearing range before giving a loud scream of pain. Holy shit! He hadn't expected her to kick him so goddamn hard! He popped his jaw back into place and waited while she got Bulma. "See, I told you!" Shanaa cried, pointing at Ryoma's mouth.
Bulma winced and tugged Ryoma out of the gym and down the hall to her lab. "Alright, this might sting just a little bit, but I have to disinfect it before I give you a senzu bean." Bulma said softly, soaking a cotton ball with some sort of clear liquid. She dabbed it on the wound and jumped a mile when he hollered like a tiger with a broken tooth. "NII-SAN!" Shanaa screamed, covering her ears. "S-Sorry... it just hurts. A lot." He muttered, clenching his jaw so Bulma could finish cleaning the wound. After she had finished, she snapped a senzu bean in half and gave it to him. "Chew and swallow. I guarantee you'll feel better in no time." She smiled and watched him eat it. Like magic, the wound closed. "Thanks, Grandma." He said softly, smiling at her.
Bulma waved a hand at him and patted his large shoulder. "Think nothing of it, sweetheart. Hell, if I hadn't grown up with Goku, I would have never learned how to take care of people like you." She waved Shanaa and Ryoma out of her lab and went back to work. "Hey, Ryoma-san, I'm really sorry about that. I should have been watching what I was doing." Ryoma waved a hand at her impatiently. "Don't worry about it, Imoto. It's not like I haven't been kicked in the face before. I've just never had my lip split down that far by someone in bare feet." He smiled at her and winked. "Have you tested that kick out on your dad yet?" He asked. Shanaa shook her head. "I don't like to hurt people I love. It's a weakness, but I can't help it. I get it from my mother, I think." "If you're sparring, you shouldn't think of whoever it is as someone you love. Think of someone you despise or someone who's broken your heart. Like and ex-boyfriend or something." He smiled and winked at her again, patting her shoulder. "You'll get it soon enough. Believe me. It took me quite a while before I could spar with my mother. I was so afraid I would hurt her, that I wouldn't allow myself to strike back." Shanaa nodded. "Mom's pretty tough. I'm sure she can handle more pain than I can, anyway." They headed into the living room where Goten and Goku sat talking. "There you are!" Goten cried, springing up off of the couch. "Where were you?" He asked. "I kicked Ryoma in the face and split his lip down to here." She showed him by touching her finger tip to her own lip. "And I took him to Grandma so she could fix him up." Goten nodded. "She hurt you, Ryoma?" Goku asked. "Not too bad. I mean, I've dealt with worse. But like I told her, I've never had my lip split down that far before." He grinned at his little sister and sat down next to his grandfather. "I'm surprised her legs can reach that high. Christ, you're taller than I am." Goku muttered. Shanaa blushed and watched Goten start to laugh. "Don't, Goten. I'll rip your nuts off faster than Granpa or Dad." Goten grinned and winked. "I wasn't going to say it. I was just going to think about it for a while and then maybe let it slip." Goku raised an eyebrow. "You were going to say that her legs can go higher than Ryoma's chin, weren't you? I said the same thing about Serena once and wasn't able to sit for a month." Goten chuckled and shook his head at his father. "I'm not stupid, Dad. I think I'd know better than to say something like that about the girl I'm with." He grinned at Shanaa who smiled and kissed his cheek. "Good boy." She purred. Goten raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me? Since when are you my mistress?" He asked. Shanaa's smile turned into a wicked grin. "Since the day you said yes when I asked you to go with me." Goku let out a little laugh. "She's got you there. Sounds exactly like her mom, this one." He grinned at his son and turned to Ryoma. "So, what about you? Did you leave a girlfriend behind when you came here?" He asked. Ryoma's face flushed bright red.
"Um... no." He answered, looking away. Shanaa's head tilted to the side a little, eyes narrowing curiously. "Really?" She seemed a bit amazed that her handsome older brother was single.
"Well... I did have a girlfriend, but, I told her I was going away and she threw a fit. Called me a dirt bag and such. She accused me of sleeping around on her and just blew up in my face and told me if I ever came back, she never wanted to speak to me again." He looked a little embarrassed to be telling this to his sister and uncle and grandfather. Shanaa bit her lower lip and slipped her arms around her brother's neck in a small hug.
"I know how that feels, Nii-san." She whispered as he hugged back. He smiled when she pulled away and patted her hand. "Thanks, Imoto." Shanaa nodded and walked out of the living room, towards the backyard where her mother and father sat talking about something. "I don't get it, Serena. Wouldn't he be like, a year or two younger than you?" Trunks muttered, not taking notice of his daughter. "I thought about that too, Koibito. I was six when I met him and he was four. He would be about forty, not nineteen." Serena's thin eyebrows came together in a soft frown. "Do you think he's another android?" Trunks asked. Serena shrugged and took a drink of her lemonade. "It's a possibility, but he eats and drinks and sleeps like a normal male... something strange is going on... why would he come to see ME? Why, after all these years, would he want ME to be his Kaasan?" She rubbed her forehead as if all of this thinking was killing her. "I don't know what to think, Koibito. I say we give him a few more days and then we can interrogate him." Trunks nodded in agreement and looked up in time to see Shanaa turning around to walk briskly back in the house.
"Shit!" He hissed. Serena looked over at him, looking a little worried. "You think she heard us?" She asked. "I know she heard us..." He stood up and followed her into the living room and took her by the arm, pulling her away from Goten and the others. "Shanaa-chan, you cannot say anything to Ryoma about what you just heard. Promise me, swear to me, that you'll keep this a secret." Shanaa glared up into her father's blue eyes and nodded. "Fine." She growled, wrenching away from him. "I can't believe you don't trust him." She muttered, turning around to go upstairs. "Shanaa! It's not that... we're just not sure he's who he says he is." Shanaa turned her head and raised both of her eyebrows. "You both seemed pretty certain that he was who he said he was when he showed up here two weeks ago. I think that's pretty hypocritical, Tousan." She marched herself up the two flights of stairs to her room and slammed the door so hard, her picture of her mother fell from the nail that held it's frame on the wall. "Bastards..." She murmured, hugging her pillow to her chest. She herself didn't trust Ryoma when he first showed up, but then she got to know him a little better and listened to his stories of the future she would never know. Her mother had welcomed him into the damn house and was now talking about not trusting him. * Why can't people make up their goddamn minds? * She thought, closing her eyes a little. She had made up her mind to trust this innocent stranger when he had picked her up and carried her with those big, gentle arms. * How could you not trust someone who was so careful with your daughter? * She asked herself, biting her lip. So what if he's younger than he should be? Perhaps he had been in this time when she had made that wish. But then he would be twenty one. Maybe he was lying about his age so her mother would accept him as one of her own. Shanaa sort of shrugged it off and curled up against her pillow, closing her eyes the rest of the way, one of Ryoma's stories playing like a drive-in movie in her mind's eye.
<><><><><><><><> ;<><>
Soft, white clouds hung in the air as Trunks lifted his nephew onto his shoulders and smiled to himself. "He's so light, Serena." He said softly, turning to look at his older sister. Serena smiled and nodded. "Yes, he is quite tiny. Do you think he'll get any bigger, Trunks?" She asked, raising a curious eyebrow. Trunks nodded. "Look at who his father was. Gohan was a big dude and I bet this guy will turn out just like him." He tickled the two-year-old's toes and laughed when he giggled insanely. Ryoma laughed and laughed, his tiny hands balling in his uncle's light lavender hair. "Mommy! Look!" He cried, pointing at something in the sky. Serena looked up and squinted, trying to see what the small object that seemed to be getting closer, was. "What...?" She started. She let out a loud scream as a bloodied body landed between her and Trunks. She grabbed Ryoma off of his uncle's shoulders and covered his eyes. Trunks spun around and pulled his sword from the sheath on his back. "Serena! Get out of here! Get Ryoma inside, NOW!" He yelled. Serena nodded and took to the sky, only to be stopped by #17. "Well, the woman has a baby. Ugly little thing..." He muttered, reaching out to flip a little of Ryoma's black hair. "Don't hurt him..." Serena whined, her voice shaking as she held Ryoma closer to her chest. "Momma..." The little boy curled into his mother's embrace, one eye peeking out at #17. "Puh-lease, lady. If we killed him, we'd be giving ourselves a bad name. It doesn't take much to kill a child, believe me." #18 hissed, her arms folded tight over her chest. "So, then... I can go?" Serena asked cautiously. "Not a chance. We said we wouldn't kill your brat, but we never said we wouldn't kill you."#17 floated forward and kicked Serena out of the air. The Saiyajin landed hard on her back, trying to keep Ryoma from getting hurt. "MOMMY!" He sobbed, clinging to her as she stood up and shot into the air. "Hold on baby." She whispered, going super Saiyajin as she swiftly flew through the air. "Where do you think you're going, missy?" #18 asked, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder. Serena closed her eyes and cried out when the android sent her crashing into the side of a building. Ryoma found himself unharmed in his mother's arms and looked up to see her unconscious. A little trickle of blood spilled from the princess's mouth as she lay on the hard concrete, not moving an inch. "Serena!" Trunks shouted, landing next to his fallen sister. He lifted her into his arms and instructed Ryoma to hold on tight as he took to the air and flew away from the androids.
Bulma was surprised to see her grandson unharmed after his first encounter with the android twins. "Well, I'm happy you're alright, Serena. Next time, leave Ryoma with me." Serena nodded at her step-mother from the hospital bed, wincing a little as a sharp pain zipped through her head. "Mommy? Who were those people? Why did they hurt you?" Ryoma asked, sitting at the foot of the bed. Serena smiled. "Those people are very very mean. They like to hurt people like me and uncle Trunks. But don't you worry about them, baby. They wont hurt you as long as we're around." She touched his cheek as he nodded.
"Ok, Mommy."
