Chapter X
"Well.. that was... odd..." Goten shrugged, sitting on the hood of his parent's car. The younger group had broken off, consisting of Gohan, Videl, Trunks, and himself.
"No it wasn't." The spunky daughter of pro-wrestler Mr. Satan huffed, crossing her arms. "He deserved it."
None of the men around her replied, so she continued.
"What? You think it's weird that she whacked him? Why? Because she's a vampire? Who-hoo-hoo.. scary...! I mean, you know, even if she is one, that doesn't mean anyone can come up to her and grab her ass!"
Trunks shrugged. "True... my Kaasan used to hit him on a daily basis, or so she told me."
Gohan, who was fidgeting with his watch, snorted. "She did." His father and Yamucha had assisted the confused Muten Roshi to his feet, and the rest carried on with the party, as if nothing had happened. Piccolo had vanished shortly after Kaeru bolted.
"I don't see why everyone is afraid of her." Trunks murmured.
"We're not!" Goten snapped.
"Everyone else is. I mean, not in a horror-movie scared. I guess they're... unnerved by her. Maybe by her strength."
"The fact that she's undead couldn't hurt either, Trunks." Gohan added at the last moment. "I guess it's just that she's new. It kind of reminds me of when Vejita started dating Buruma. Everyone was uncomfortable about it, I suppose. They're just not used to her."
"I think she's pretty neat, myself." Goten chirped, folding his knees up and wrapping his arms around them. "I mean, can you imagine what she's seen? Wonder what it would be like to fight her..."
"Goten, I don't think you mean 'fight'. Well, not in that exact context." Gohan grinned at his younger brother mischeviously.
It took a second for it to register in the teen's mind, but when it did, he swatted viciously at Gohan. "Shaddap!" he said, laughing, but blushing from ear to ear.
"Idiot." Trunks grinned, tying his long hair into a ponytail.
"Sissy boy."
"Thick-..."
"Knock it off, the pair of you." Videl snapped, rolling her eyes. Her husband turned his head, hiding his smile.
Kaeru was outside, on the opposite end of the building. In the nick of time, she'd come across a bathroom, and regurgitated the copious amounts of food she'd eaten. Now sitting in the darkness, she was breathing hard, her face flushed and her heart pounding. Throwing up had made her hunger return with twice its fury. The alchohol in her bloodstream was making her light-headed, and she sat against one of the flower boxes, looking at the sky, trying to relax, and push away the feeling. Trying to compensate, she'd drank from the tap, until her stomach was full once more. But it wasn't water she wanted.
"No. I won't do it." Clenching her fists, she tried to ignore the pervasive smell of blood. When she'd smacked Roshi, the urge to kill had arisen in her. And she hadn't had what vampires must have to live in years. She'd been getting by on normal sustenance. "I won't feed."
"You must do what it is in your nature to do. Denying it is denying your right to live." someone said, standing at the right-hand corner of the building. It was Piccolo, and he stepped from his hiding place like a ghost.
"I must kill to live. How is that right?" she said, her words catching in her throat.
"It is, if it is what you need to do."
"Piccolo... you don't understand."
"I don't, Kaeru." he stood over her. "But I want to." Offering his hand, Piccolo looked down at her, a pleading look in his eyes.
She took it, Piccolo helping her to her feet. Stepping forward, she found she had no strength, and fell against him. There was nothing in her body for her to survive on. "Kaeru? What's the matter?"
Her eyes were clouded, as she touched her fingers to her forehead. "I'm drained. Hungry. I need to..." She swallowed hard. "Hunt." Pulling free of him, she found that walking was nearly impossible. "Fuck." Swearing softly, she let Piccolo hold her steady. "You're a fool, Kaeru! Why did you go this long without it?! Now you can't hunt at all!" she growled under her breath.
Piccolo was looking down at her, listening to her self-reprimand. "You need blood?"
Kaeru nodded silently.
"Take mine." He said, before his mind started screaming obscenities at him.
"What?" her dark eyes were wide.
"Blood is blood. And you need it."
"Piccolo... I can't."
"Yes you can, Kaeru. And it will benefit me as well."
Raising a slender brow, the woman looked at him. "I don't follow."
"Perhaps it will help me to understand what is going on." He held her by her shoulders, their eyes locked.
"B-but..."
"I want you to." He lifted his chin, offering his throat.
Taking a deep breath, she inhaled the smell of the Nameckjin. Sweat and flowers. Beneath this, there lay the thick odor of blood. Her eyes changed color, until they were deep crimson. With the bloodlust welling up in her, she could see below the surface of his smooth verdant skin. There lay the complex network of blood vessels, the jugular vein pulsing, glowing bright purple.
Hesitant at first, she drew closer, until Piccolo wrapped his arms around her, nearly crushing her against his broad chest. She had to stand on tiptoes to reach his throat.
A warm gust of air on his neck made him shiver, as Kaeru put her head on his shoulder, her lips millimeters from his throat. "Do it." he swallowed hard. "Before I loose my nerve."
She pressed a light kiss to the throbbing vein. In the next moment, her fangs broke through his skin. Both went rigid, Piccolo's eyes nearly bulging out of his head. Her arms wound around his back, fingers wrapped tightly in his gi. As soon as it had begun, however, it was over. Kaeru pushed herself from him, wiping his blood from her chin. Her face was flushed, eyes filled with this kind of insane look that made Piccolo nervous.
Covering the wound with his hand, he watched as Kaeru seemed to grow larger. The muscles beneath her skin surged, doubling her size. A raspy, anamalistic growl rippled from her throat. She'd gone from human, to wild beast. It took a few moments, but eventually, panting for air, Kaeru returned to normal.
"Ka...Kaeru?" Turning her head away, she still gasped for air, like she had run a marathon.
"I'm...all right, Piccolo." Pushing her hair from her face, Piccolo saw that her eyes had returned to their normal Saiyajin black.
"What happened?"
"When I drink blood, I undergo a transformation, becoming this bloodthirsty savage. I usually can control it, but because I hadn't drunk in a while, it came through with more force." Looking up at him, she smiled a little. "Are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?"
He snorted. "I'm fine. Just a little dizzy, but I'm fine."
"I apologize again. Sometimes it's hard to gauge how much I've taken."
"I've been meaning to ask you something, Kaeru. How is it... that you are able to be out in the sunlight? You are a vampire, are you not?"
"I don't know what happened, really. I guess the one who made me did it improperly. Or perhaps he wasn't a full vampire."
"How... is that?" Removing his hand from his throat, he looked at the blood on his fingers. The wound hadn't stopped bleeding yet.
"Gah.. here. Let me fix." Nipping her index finger, she stood on her tip toes again, smoothing the blood over the fang-wounds in his neck. The vampiric blood instantly sealed the holes. "Anyway... I guess it's a misconception. Vampirisim isn't like a race, you know, like Chikyuujin or Nameckjin. It's more like a disease... a curse. And by partaking of the blood of a vampire, the curse enters you. I don't quite understand the full idea, but after two centuries, that's all I could come up with."
The woman and Nameckjin were silent for the next few moments, when Gokou suddenly emerged.
"Kaeru?"
She turned her gaze to her feet. "Gokou I-"
"Hey hey... it's okay!" Gokou raised his hands, stopping Kaeru's long-winded apology in progress. "I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
"I'm fine. ...is Muten Roshi...?"
"He's good. He's got thick skin." Gokou grinned. "It's not the first time he's been hit, let me tell you."
She forced a grin. "Whatever you say..."
"Yep. ...did you want more to eat...?" he gestured back to direction of the party. " 'Cause it's almost time for dessert."
"Nah. I'm okay. Stuffed." Bowing her head a little, she hid a grin. Her skin had taken on a deeper shade of pink, a drastic change to the almost translucent color from before. Piccolo snorted, shooting a glance off to the side.
"Ya sure?"
"Postitive."
"Okie!" he squeaked, deciding it was best to get back to the food before it was too late.
Watching the orange-and-blue streak barrel around the building, taking the longer outside route, Kaeru rubbed her forehead, a sort of half grin on her face.
Piccolo noticed the look. "What?"
"This is too much..." she turned her eyes skyward, trying to think of the words. "I find a small herd of Saiyajin, two Nameckjin, one of which is Kami-sama, get welcomed into this group like they've known me for years, eat my brains out, get hit on by a freaky old man in a turtle shell, nearly knock his head off, and then drink the blood of a Nameckjin, like it's no big deal." It came out in one long woosh. She then turned to Piccolo. "You see what I'm getting at, here?"
He nodded simply. "I think so."
"Oh good good. I thought it was just me."
"You need to relax." he chuckled, patting the top of her head.
"Actually, I'm usually very laid back. Very mellow. But this.. this has got me wound tighter than a spring."
"Come on." He suddenly grabbed a fistfull of her gi, dragging her to the edge of the Lookout.
"Where are we go---AAAAIIEE!!" After he had nearly thrown both of them off of the side, Kaeru barely managed to power up and keep her from going splat. She glared at him. "What are you doing?!"
Surrounded by his own white ki, Piccolo drifted ahead of her. "Follow me." With that, he took off in a rush. Kaeru grumbled and followed.
A few miles south of the Eastern continent, Piccolo landed on a small island. Kaeru touched down beside him. "What's all this about?"
"It's called Stress Reliever 101." he said quickly, before throwing a lightning-fast jab, square at her head.
Just barely swift enough to dodge it, Kaeru threw her head forward, Piccolo's fist pounding against her thick rope of hair. "HEY! Watch what you're doing!" But she'd gotten the idea. Fighting would definetly let out some steam. Her eyes narrowed, a strange smile forming on her lips. "All right then." She poised her body into a fighting stance, her left arm raised, parallel with her eyes. She curled this appendage into a hard claw. Her right was drawn in tight to her body, the inside of her fist brushing against her hip. Feet shoulder width apart, tail looped around her waist. "Bring it on, boy-o."
"Well.. that was... odd..." Goten shrugged, sitting on the hood of his parent's car. The younger group had broken off, consisting of Gohan, Videl, Trunks, and himself.
