Black flowers ; chapter 8, 'Hope'

Bra was the first to jump at the sudden visitors. Her frightened eyes stared up at the guards. She wrapped her arms around her legs tighter from her sitting place on the cold floor. One of the guards approached her, holding the opened collar for her. Bra flitted her eyes, and saw Goku already collared, watching her with a hollow sadness. Bra darted her gaze around the room, assessing her situations quickly, before leaping up as the guard closed in. She screamed, trying to escape but he caught her arm tightly. "Not again!" She screamed. "Please!! Leave me alone!"

Trunks nearly moved to help her, his fists clenched tightly now with anger. The guard clamped the collar around her, and she still fought. She kicked and screamed with a madness. "NNNOOOOO!!!!!!" She screamed. The guard struck her lightly with irritation. Bra cried out, falling limp in his arms. Trunks roared, coming at the guard at Super Saiyan level. The guard's reflexes were amazing and unexpected. He smacked the hotheaded man down mid attack. A choked sound came from Trunks, almost inhuman. As he hit the floor, a pool of blood began to collect beneath him.

Vegeta growled, kneeling to his son, feeling for a wound. There was. He glared up at the guard holding his now dazed precious daughter, and saw that the guards' glove contained a blade. The guard retracted the blade with a laugh.

"He'll live… maybe." The guard laughed out loud. The other guard herded Goku out, both leaving the cell in confusion and disarray.

They were escorted to the familiar padded cell now. The door was slammed, both Saiyans left inside. Neither spoke for what seemed like forever. Goku was staring intently at the door. Bra was on the floor, been thrown there by the guard. She slowly sat up, gazing up at Goku.

"Goku…?" She said worriedly. He glanced at her, then back to the door. She knelt up. "Goku... we're here…here too…" She said with no further response from him. "Don't you know?" She stood to her feet, walking up behind him. She placed her hand on his shoulder. She gave a squeal of fright as he spun and caught her wrists.

"I know Bra." He answered her at last. "I may not be the most intelligent man on earth… but I know what's right. And this isn't…"

Bra gazed at him with confusion. Her hands began to tremble lightly. "Goku... there's no other way to get out of here." She protested. "There's no way out, don't you see that? It's hopeless!"

"It's never hopeless!" Goku said sharply, and Bra flinched at such harsh spoken words from him. "It can't be… there's always been a way out! Always!"

Bra watched with devastation as the glazed dreamy look of determination crossed his features. Goku had saved them all before. He was right. It had always been all right, every time there was a new threat, him and the Z warriors had always been there to make everything better again. He still possessed that eternal hope, burning inside of him. But this time it was futile, useless. There was no way out. Even his instant transmission had been ineffective due to the extensive technology that held them here. Goku let go of her wrists and went back to the door, feeling his hands along the padding. "There has to be a way…" He frowned. "I can't even use a ki blast because of this collar."

Bra began to sob. "Goku! There isn't any way! Don't you see that?" She screamed. "It's hopeless!" She cried again.

Goku flinched at the words, his eyes becoming glassy and saddened. "I have to find a way…" he whispered. "This isn't right. You shouldn't have to do this… not with me, not with Gohan or Goten…" He told her gently, looking at her tear streamed face. "This should be your choice. You should be doing this with someone you love… Your true love. Not here... Not like this."

Bra sobbed quietly at his words. "Gohan was gentle with me." She said quietly.

Goku looked at her searchingly. "I know." He answered with a weak but genuine smile. "Bra... we need to get out of here. We have lives to lead, dreams... families. I miss Chi-Chi so much. All those times I had to leave her, and now I had been able to stay, we've had that torn away from us again. I can't accept this."

Bra listened. It was difficult to define Goku and Chi-Chi's relationship. Chi-Chi seemed to almost be a parent to him, cooking and nagging. But from Goku's soft words and the look in his eyes, Bra could for the first time see. His love for her was simple, pure. It had no frills, no drama, just pure love and need for each other. Bra wanted to smile, but found she couldn't. That was what she would never have now. Her life was no longer her own. She would never know love like that.

Goku was silent, as if softly mourning his love. His face hardened. "I won't give up, Chi-Chi. For you, for everyone. I can't give in… " He said clearly. She watched with horror as he began to power up as Pan had done in her first panic. The collar fizzled and held firm. The metal grew a red gleam, as Goku's aura became visible around him. He screamed out with might, his muscles bulging with exertion. "I won't give in!" he screamed as a clamor was heard outside the room. The door was burst open as many guards flooded in, trying to restrain the rebelling Saiyan. Bra watched with fright and terror as Goku was tackled, and as he fought bravely, and maybe foolishly against the impossible odds. But it was a hero's foolishness. The kind you only see maybe once a lifetime.

Bra screamed too as Goku was quickly overpowered. She watched numbly as a guard held a small device, and fiddled the controls. Goku gave a sharp choked cry of pain that made Bra shiver to her very core. It was almost inhuman. He slumped to the floor, sinking to the padded covering, his energy leaving his body. Bra leapt forward. "GOKU!" She screamed with ear deafening pitch. The guards caught her, and she clawed their arms, frantic and desperate. The hero didn't move.

The guards flung Bra across the room against one of the walls. She too slunk to the floor in pain, but her Saiyan blood protected her from being injured. The guard that seemed to be in charge nudged Goku with his foot, holding Goku's chin up by the edge of his boot. He let it drop back to the floor. He then turned to Bra, who was cowering. She saw his eyes drift down her body, and she felt deep disgust. The guard smirked. "She seems satisfying enough. It is surprising the Saiyan didn't find her pleasing enough to mate with." He looked straight at her face, addressing her this time. "You didn't do a very good job, did you, wench?" he snarled with cold amusement.

"I have a name. I'm not a whore." Bra snapped, even though she was afraid, she was Bulma's daughter. How else had Bulma managed to deal with Vegeta all this time?

The guard snorted, unimpressed. "Maybe if she had kept that annoying trap shut, he would have been more aroused to cover her." He projected to his men. They laughed heartily at this, and the guard turned from her with a smirk. The guards filed out of the room. The higher rank guard paused by Goku's limp form. He gave it a kick as he stopped. "Maybe after this, he will realise it is futile to defy us." The guard said. "There won't be a next time. He won't be so easily spared again." The door slammed and sealed once again. Bra didn't move. She couldn't. She curled up in fear. Trying to still her beating heart. It was 30 minutes before Goku stirred. Any normal man may have been out cold for weeks. Bra heard his groan as he tried to get up. He rolled on his back, hissing with pain. Bra uncovered her face, watching him. "Goku?" She asked with hope. She crawled over to his form. He opened his eyes to gaze at her.

"Bra? Are you ok?" he asked with concern even in his own condition. He saw her frightened face and his heart sank. The innocence in her eyes made her seem a child again.

"Goku... they said they'd kill you next time." Bra sobbed, near hysterical. "You can't! Why didn't you listen to me?"

Goku lifted a finger to her lips to silence her. "It was worth it." He answered with a brave smile. The kind that melted away fear, made everything ok.

Bra looked at him with the worst kind of sadness. Seeing such a hero, reduced to this. All his hope, all his brave dreams, were little more than dust, slipping through their fingers. Her tears slowly dried on her cheeks, as she drew closer to him. Keeping it all locked in her, she leant to kiss his lips gently. Goku protested at first, but she persisted. This was the only way. She knew it was. She drew back and gazed at his confused face as she pulled her top over her head, then pushed down her skirt and panties. She was younger, far more naïve, but for some reason, he seemed the more innocent one. His eyes drifted down her with such an obvious mixture of feelings. He looked confused… sad. Bra leant over him, untying the belt of his gi pants. Goku lifted a hand to stop her. He took hold of her wrist weakly.

"Bra...no." He tried to say hoarsely.

Bra smiled weakly. "Sssshh..." She soothed. Goku groaned as Bra touched him. He felt the devastation inside of him as his body reacted for him. He turned his head, staring at the whiteness of the walls as Bra straddled him. Soon she was moving, Goku too weak to protest. He disconnected himself from his body. His body was here, but his mind was elsewhere. Through the blank canvas of the wall, he began to dream, all the colours in his soul, in his heart. Of Chi-Chi, of his home. Of the green hills and all the colours of the warm sunsets. He saw Gohan and Goten, watched them grow, felt Chi-Chi's warm touches in the night. He saw his friends, Krillen, Tien, Piccolo, Vegeta, everyone. He felt the deep contentment fill him at the memories.

He trembled as he released himself in the embrace with Bra. But he felt nothing.

He wasn't here. He was lost in his dreams. Most of all he thought of her. He felt her warm hands, her dark eyes in the brilliant sunlight. Her soft black hair…

"Chi-Chi..." he murmured her name, as a tear in all it's silver rolled down his cheek.
